I've wanted a sampler for years and finally decided to get one. Was gonna get a 404 used but found your vid not knowing the MKII existed... gonna wait to grab a MKII now.
Nice yeah if you are new to the SP world the mk2 is a good starting point as it has all the features you’d expect for making beats. Then you can look around the older ones to pair up with it at a later date 👍
Great vid, really informative. The improvements in the workflow (chop features, mute groups, 16 level, etc) def make it less clunky to produce with. Thanks for sharing!

Another great video. I'm really enjoying mine. I've already released two songs I've made on it and I've had it for about six weeks. Really intuitive to use.
Can’t wait to master mine. I’ve been practicing using my unit everyday. I also picked up finger drumming and I haven’t been this excited learning/practicing an instrument since I was learning the piano as a kid
I bought the A a few weeks ago as I wanted to learn, which I’m enjoying; learning a lot from your early videos, thank you. I will hopefully get the MK 2 later in the year when they have them. I think the old ones will always have a vintage value and sound as the years pass.
Its a great bit of gear! The sound is one thing that the older devices have on their side yes, but I see that as one of the very few advantages! The MK2 has really grown on me since the 1.14 upgrade. I hardly use the SX now
TIP] If you are in North America you should check on zZounds. I ordered mine on January 22nd and I just got tracking today. However it's coming from Oregon Ohio. The rep on the phone told me the one in New Jersey are coming March 23rd. I'm from Connecticut which is like a 2 hour drive at most from New Jersey. I would've thought I would have to wait for New Jersey's shipment. I dunno if they're even doing preorder/backorder priority lol the guy flat out told me when...without me asking or hinting at anything.

I wish they would make an MK2 machine but with the AD chips from the 404/404sx, honestly.... that's one of the best parts of the whole SP series

I had no ideas about the midi controller use on Ableton, Thanks for that. Also how do you think the 303 Compression fx compares to the original?
No problem man! I need to do a proper side-by-side on that but my guess from using it is that its close but 'you can't beat the real thing'. I will do some side-by-side vids soon just gotta work out how to set it all up!

Ordered mine October 14. Since then I’ve changed out a huge amount of my studio equipment and I still haven’t seen my 404MK2. Guess it’s a good thing I’ve had an A for a very long time but this is pretty grueling.

I have the sp202..with a memory card. Wonder if I should upgrade to this? I'm not a beat maker as such, but a bass guitarist with effects and a couple of moog synths etc. not wanting anything too complicated .

The 202 is very limited. Maybe even look at the 404 OG or an SX as they are great for FX

I can hook my IPad and sample iOS instruments without power. That’s to me the best thing about usb connectivity.

No sequencer which sucks and the price point is a pretty penny 🥲
@@spvidz ya I agree, it’s super expensive
With each update that they think of in hindsight, the more menu diving which the unit isn’t physically great for. If you want to make beats on the go, I guess it’s ok. MPC live or even Koala on an IPad might help people avoid the gas
Yup there are definitely other portable options out there. The menu diving can't really be avoided with the demand for so many new features unfortunitely but I do still think its a massive improvement to the SX/A. You can do so much more
After a few months with MKII sold my SX. Workflow and seeing the sound wave just couldn’t go back.
I can't got back now. I think I would actually throw it at a wall trying to resample with that tiny polyphony! I will be keeping it purly for nostalgia and maybe as a companion for my MPC for FX.

What about to structure a whole song in the Sp 404 MkII? I've heard that it's deficient
I will do a video about that. It can be done easily with the pattern mode. WIth resample you have to get creative but it can be done
Any clue if you can stream straight into Instagram live via the USB port??
You can yes. I have an iPhone and had to buy an adapter but apparently it does work. I record beat videos straight into my iphone with sound using the USB now its such a dream!

are you limited to the same bus effects for every pad? or can you have different fx on each pad?
The pads can be individually routed to FX bus 1, 2 or clean.
no you can have as many as 4 different FX at the same time across BUS 1, 2 ,3 and 4!
@@spvidz damn was hoping you could... kind of weak since 404's are known for the fx... why they skimp on the ram on gear i don't know...
Think I might have misread - you can have two different MFX at the same time on different pads by routing them to either BUS 1 or 2. BUS 3 & 4 are on top of everything, but in theory you can have 4 different fx running at the same time, its just that BUS 3 & 4 will be on top of everything else. @@spvidz cheers, ya so can't have 16 different fx going at the same time for each pad like tracks... only 2 bus and 2 master at once... so would need to resample with fx if i wanted to finish a track on there with more than 2 fx in the mix... like reverb and delay on pad 1 and scatter and vinyl on pad 2 then res and comp on pad 3 and so on... even my korg electribe2 gets a different effect on each pad. which is why it's surprising to me...

Man I was horribly misinformed, i was told when in the midst of purchasing an sp that the a was better than the mk2 and is like a budget version. Might as well just start with the 404a since im stuck with it smh

It's overwhelming. I'm literally sitting in the Dark. In the Kitchen Rethinking my approach to my 404mk2.
Its taken me a bit of time to work out how to use it best and I'm still learning. Just keep chipping away and it will become clear what works best for you. I sometimes forget about some of the features it has! Don't sweat it just enjoy your beat making process and slowly incorporate what you can to make it easier for you!

The MK2 is dope but to be honest, the A should have been already like that but 2017 Roland somehow decided to re-release the SX after 8 years without any new development with new colors under a new name / version number. MK2 probably do not have something that would technically not possible 5 years ago.
Agreed. I have no idea what the A release was about. It was so disappointing at the time
I actually think the mkii is still really rough around the edges. So many menudiving, no easy mark button, really rudimentary envelope, sequencing, deleteing, multi level so annoying to get in and out to delete, undo not working in multi level. Just not intuitive at all, the SX was way more predictable and it’s very cheap now. Impossible to build organized kits on the mkii without a computer, and so on. I really hope they are working to make it nicer.
agree on some points, more updates are required and there have been and still are some teething problems. 1.14 was a good update. Just go into start/end amd use the mark button for marking?
@@spvidz yeah but as you go into start end mode it's easy to stay there and mess up your points when you want to adjust effects. It was really intuitive on the sx, press mark set start and end. Go to start end to fine tune but if you got good at marking then mostly no need to fine tune and can stay on the default mode mostly. I just feel there's to many stepping in and out.
You were buggin' with this comment. The mk2 is better than the SX and A in every conceivable way no disrespect. They've improved everything wrong about those devices for the most part. The menudiving becomes second nature once you know what you're doing. Samee thing with the shortcut keys. The sound is incredible as well.
No built in mic, no built in mic, no built in mic. And we like limitations, we like tuning start points by ear, a la SP1200. We don't want more function buttons and shift commands. We ought to practice our finger drumming so we don't need the playback thingy.

The Akai mpc 4000 clearly had more features than the 3000. Funny how things turn out in the fullness of time ...
The SPs are all far too limited. An old MPC can still do much more. Overdo the pitch wobbling and you've got the average SP enjoyer.
You can't put an old MPC in your backpack though or record beats directly into your phone via usb yadda yadda I could easily make a decent list saying the opposite. It really all depends what you want from a device. I love the MPCs but they are very different device and have different pros and cons IMO
The new SP is basically an MPC so you're not really saying much.
