lol i got the same, i need to edit clips and speed them up whenever i do this with even a single clip i get 3 fps..... EDIT I FIXED IT! So all this shit from this video doesnt do shit, like many other tutorials. So what works is go to where your imported media (clips) are and right click on one or multiple of your clips and create a video proxy. This will create a low quality video for you to edit the clips in (must be in draft or preview in order for the proxy videos to be loaded) and when your edits are done simply go into best(full) or w/e and render your video. I swear this fixed literally all the lagg.
Thank you! Disabling smart resample did the trick. They've made some changes in recent release of Studio 17, however. You need to select the video clip(s), then go to Edit menu | Switches | Disable Resample. This solved my lag on fresh PC with Ryzen 5 3600XT and 64GB RAM and 4GB MSI card.

omg this literally saved me. i got a new gfx card and since vegas played up, clips would be slow and transitions were unwatchable. Now everything is a smooth 60! thanks! :)
THE SOLUTION: Two things: The main thing is it's yourWindows Power Plan. Switch to Maximum Performance, and your problems will go away... from what you probably have it set to... Balanced, or Optimized. The best way to do this is to leave it as it is, but install Process Lasso and name MovieStudio as a game process, so wheeever it sees Movie studio running, it will switch to Maximum Performance Power Plan. Then when you quit the program, it will revert to Balanced or Optimized Power Plan under Power Settings in your Control Pandel:PardwarePower settings. But if you don't have Process lasso, you can do it manually just by opening the Control panel and switching to Maximum Performance whenever you are video editing. That one change alone should fix all your problems.

I've come to realize that previewing and editing MP4 files lag the hell out of my computer for me in Vegas but m4v is super smooth. My solution was to get Handbrake and encode all my mp4 files into m4v so they run smoother on Vegas. No idea why this works for me but it does so give this a try is all else fails for you like it did for me.

Thanks. The Create video proxy helped. For some reason MOV files lag Mp4 work fine like i can even watch them on full. Also Hate how everyone online claims get a better computer ummmm doubt that will fix the MOV files issue 😑 I was tired of converting every clip to mp4 just to watch the preview when editing.

The best trick is to right klick on your video clip in Project media and klick on - Create video proxy - and it will pre render in the background and your video will play perfect without lag.

Now the video works perfectly (59.94 FPS) the whole time... but the transitions lag the **** out. Do people realize that the preview quality will never be as good as the final rendered version? After rendering all these lags will go away, and if the video is gonna lose frame rate after rendering there is no way to know but to simple render a short part of the video and test. When making a new project Sony Vegas will adjust the project's framerate according to the first video uploaded. For avoiding lags you have to manually disable resamble for every video added afterwards.
I know this movie has been recorded quite a long time ago, but I'll try to write. When I add a clip, it has small spots in places, even though the fps still persist at 60fps. For example, in a movie at some point for 2 seconds the image looks as if it was in 20 fps even though I still have 60 fps in the preview. Original clips do not have such clippings.

i get lag when it opens up. with the timeline cursor (the arrow with the line that goes across your edit) its supposed to blink at a consistent rate about ever 1.5 - 2 seconds but mine takes 5+ seconds and the whole interface is extremely laggy, i followed all steps and watched every lag video but nobody seems to have this problem but me. if i go to even exit sony vegas by hitting the red X, like when i put my cursor over the exit button it wont turn red until like 5 seconds after i move it to the X. idk whats going on but if someone has this same problem and found a fix pls lmk!

maybe the files you are editing are really large in size
in that case upgrading your storage/ram/processor should be a priority

No it won't lag in the rendered version, the preview lags because your PC can't render fast enough

Right-click the exported file and go to properties. If the framerate there is 60 then it probably just isn't done processing on TH-cam's end
