- This is just a quick tutorial on how to fix the preview window lag in Sony Vegas Pro 13. I tried some other techniques but this method that I came up with seems to work the best for me.

The cause of this problem is the file size of your video, if the video bitrate is too high or the file size is too large, Vegas Pro cannot process and playback the file smoothly. To fix this problem, use a video compression software like AVC or Handbrake and set it to the optimal settings. :)

That is COMPLETELY untrue. You could show yourself pirating and even that wouldn't be illegal. The illegal part... is (surprise surprise) the actual piracy itself.

He's not showing himself pirating. He's showing himself patching vegas with a 3rd party application. IF someone tried to arrest him (no one would though, no one gives a shit about online pirating) they'd have the burden of proof, which they could only get if they saw him downloading pirated vegas.
He patched a paid program, that's called pirating.

I think this is a great suggestion. People don't like doing all these confusing steps because they're lazy and want an easy way through. I also pirated it, and I was smart enough to save the install file so its easy peasy for me. Great video man.

PRO TIP - Just go into preferences, Video - Change the dynamic ram to a little under the highest, so for example - I have 16gb Ram, And i changed the max to 12000. Select the portion of video that you want - click shift B - And it should pre render your selected footage, this will not make the entire video lag free but very helpful if you have a section with a lot of effects and large file size ;)

If you're editing in mov, try converting it to mp4 and the playback should work. Someone commented saying that was their issue so I'm making a post to help someone who might see this. It worked for me.

This video is legit, Best (full) settings in preview with 0 lagg, Don't have to Shift+B anymore, even though my 32gb 3200mhz ram, 4.0Ghz i7 and 1080 GTX where handling it fine, but stil that annoying lagg is GONE, this fixed it. Thanks ALOT!

i have 16Gb of ram and my preview was lagging, i changed to dynamic ram to 0 and it plays smoothly now.

the dynamic ram preview memory allocation is kind of bugged, i did the same thing, even tested out a higher number first because i thought "if i allocate more memory to the ram allocation it wont bottleneck" but for some reason its the opposite, dont ask me why im just trying to explain to the best of my ability :P

I am editing a video right now which is captured by my Go Pro action cam. But it was stuck at max. 10frames per second. Now i followed every step and it helped a little bit. 'TILL the last 1. Bye Lag! Thx SO Much :D

Guys just right click on a video when you import it and press "create video proxy", then import it into timeline. Works like a charm even 4k for me!
Oh thank god the lag was driving me crazy! TY for going through the fixes they all did improve the flow a little but reinstalling & disabling net notifier worked. Big thanks to you.

What if you search for the firewall in windows, and it says that the firewall is uninstalled even though I’ve never touched this software

your issue fix is to disable net notify in the preferences as soon as you install, once they realize it's pirated they start disabling functions.
oh i guess you know that haha. that is the fix, known issue with friends and myself for many years now

No need to re-install! Just start Vegas while holding Ctrl-Shift buttons at the same time.
Then it performs reset-to-defaults.
I need to do this every month so I find it more convenient.

the preview thing helped a lot. was converting youtube vids into MP4 HD and it was really choppy but its fine now, brings the quality of the preview down but its fine because i just need it so i can sync shots to music properly. thankyou!

Do two things really work, versus all those Preference setting changes that don't (I've tried them all):
1. Change your Monitor Display properties on all monitors (right click on Desktop and chose Display Properties) from 32 bit down to 16 bit depth. That cuts down the bytes your computer has to move out by half...
2. Close some of the apps you got running in the background.. a huge game you have open, or OBS studio, a ton of Firefox windows, etc. anything that uses cycles and is putting a load onto the CPU... are CPU cycles that won't be available to render the preview window. You want your CPU graph to be near flat line while you're working in Sony Vegas/Movie Studio on an old processor.
3. Next to where you changed it to Preview (Quarter) on the Image Preview area top bar, on the far left of that bar is a Settings Gear Icon. Click that, you'll get another Dialog box, and change the Full Resolution quality down from Good to Preview.
4. Some problems you can't fix no matter what. The only solution then is to upgrade your system processor, or bump down your source media resolution you work with... i.e., from 1080p down to working with 720p video. My FX-8350 just barely isn't enough to 100% always render 1080 preview without interruption. For me, for example, this might me I have to record my game full screen capture footage in 720p rather than 1080p... which sucks..

i have a problem when i use sony vegas
so whenever i try to add in lyrics to a song, timing is especially crucial due to the pace of the song.
during editing, i would listen, stop, and type in the lyrics at the time of which it should appear. seems normal.
but whenever i preview it as a whole project, the lyrics would always come in late. maybe it has to do with preview lag, which is what is mentioned in this video. (good to know that my preview lags too especially when i add more than 3 clips in a same time frame.)
but ive done the same thing with the text with song before, and it turned out fine.
so i have no idea whats happening and ive kindoff lost interest in editing because of this.
if you have any plausible solutions for my problem, please elaborate so you can help me. thank you :)
If you were editing a lot, you need to save, exit and open the program again, let it load all the way through and it should be fine.

Change the template in Project Video Properties (ALT+ENTER in Sony Vegas) to QFHD 24p 30 FPS, for me FIXED THE LAGS!
Then when you render change back to whatever you want, my preview quality settings is ON FULL and still no lags with this trick, i hope this helps to somebody :)
Method 1 worked for me, thanks a lot dude. Feel pretty dumb for not realizing i could do that sooner xD
Change Preference -> Video -> Dynamic Ram Preview to w.e number your system can handle. Then highlight the the part you want to preview and press shift+b it will render that part for a smooth preview.

I solved my lag problem installing the Vegas Pro 14 version. I was using the 12 version and it made it seem like my computer was the problem. Once I started running the exact same project on the newer version, I noticed the lag was the 12 version's fault.
i installed 14 but its still the same. I have noo problem in my laptop ow whatsoevr only the application :( help

Changing my preview from best(full) to preview(auto) worked for me. No more lag in vegas 14. Not sure if it works or 15 too but I stopped using 15 because it would bug alot.

here is a fix for you the part where you went to video tab and change the Dynamic Ram you don't change it to "0" you need to change it to 10% of your max RAM. for an example where you have 7093 you change it to 700. this fix the lag I had and didn't need to reinstall Vegas.. hope this helps

Go to processes and disable we browser and anything else that takes up memory. That is how you completely remove the lag in Vegas. Thank you.
Just discovered that just blocking it from windows defender itself fixes it. I didn't uninstall AT ALL, just changed the fire wall and it was magic.
Thanks dude. I've been using Sony Vegas for years with a video preview that was like 5-10FPS. Changed the dynamic Ram to 0 instead of 2048 and It's running fluently without any lag. Awesome!

Tried your solution, but doesn't work for me. When I open Windows Firewall settings I'm unable to select any settings as it says that my firewall is being controlled by another program (Kapsersky).

thx , my preview windows was lagging cuz i use 7 layers + many effect ( its only lagging on the clip w most effect tho ) , i tried all ur method ( except reinstaling ) and now a the fps a bit better , at least i can still match the klip w the beat music :'(
