Wasn't a great experience, as a child, it was hard enough going to school learning English, mathematics, art, history and science and on top of that still got to learning Chinese when I get home, was a real torture. Was more or less a ritual, wasn't really learning. And once there's no reason to use Chinese, I completely stopped using Chinese in college. Yes, there was a period of time I struggled with Chinese. Eventually, I found my way back to relearning Chinese again. I now can read and speak Mandarin and Cantonese fluently, not so much writing. I can only say, from my experience, being pushed to constantly learn Chinese cause a different reaction in my part. If I were given a chance to learn Chinese from interacting with others and learning on my own, I may have a better appreciation for learning Chinese growing up.
Hi Mike, my kid is a about the same age as yours. My kid is born and raised in Canada but he is able to retain his Chinese fluency primarily because my wife and I both speak to him in Mandarin at home. We did this intentionally because he talks to teachers and friends in English in school. The only way for him to maintain his Chinese is to talk Chinese whenever possible.
This is so true. For my older son we did this 1 parent 1 language since young too, eventually he refused to speak in chinese both in school and at home… even his grandparents started to learn english just to communicate with him😢 I panicked and signed him up for 1-1 online lesson just to force him to speak in chinese… got better after a while. For my younger child, both parents spoke in chinese with her, turned out she is much fluent and better in the language compared to her brother now😅
Speaking Chinese at home is the best way to help Little Mike. As Teacher Mike can speak Chinese, this rule can be easily enforced. Kids learn from parents. 加油!
It's an absolutely normal phenomenon. I lived in Sichuan province when I was only 4-5 years old, so I could speak Sichuan dialect fluently. But when I was 6 years old, I moved to Anhui province, I forgot all the Sichuan dialects and picked up Auhui dialects. This was an interesting thing. So kids can learn everything fast in an immersive environment and also everything can be easily forgotten without further practice.
Once we decide to go back to Europe, we will face similar challenges. I heard it from other expats as well. And the same thing happened with my daughter‘s German once we had been in China for a few months. One of the things I start to consider for our next destination will be possible Chinese language education. Either in school or via a club or so. Also a Chinese community will be something we want to look out for to make it easy to stay in contact with the language. The approaches you mention are definitely great options and I will keep them in mind once the time comes. 😊
Now my 15 years old kid can speak German, English, Chinese, and Spanish, and writing as well. 😂It is very difficult to insist on that, one parent one language, but I did it. Now it's autopilot
@@LW78321 thank you 🤣my kid's English teacher told me that he could already take Matura exam to pass English graduation now even though he still has two more years to finish high school
It's definitely a struggle! We're in Australia and I speak to my 4yo son in Chinese and my husband speaks to him in Vietnam, but he will always respond in English. We've started WuKong online classes and he attends Chinese school once a week which have helped
My son born in the 🇺🇸, he is 37 now, he speaks fluent Chinese even he can’t read. He watched Stephen Chow movies a lot plus we speak Chinese most of the time
In fact, learning a language is more like developing a skill. For example, my company is an international one, and when clients from around the world come for business visits, my boss specifically arranges colleagues who speak the clients’ native languages to accompany them and host business dinners. This makes the clients feel very comfortable. So, people who speak multiple languages are highly valued.😂
My linguistics professor with a PHD in Linguistics from Boston Univ. told our MA TESOL class that linguistically speaking you should ONLY speak your native tongues to your child, he speaks to you and you speak to him ONLY in English and with mom ONLY in Chinese. This is for him to grow up bilingual. Also consider sending him to China every summer for 3 months to live with the grandparents and study. Get him an online teacher and study 30 min. a day 5-6 days a week. Start with these maybe ^^ peace.
My son also went through the phase of learning Chinese, but after that, it all went downhill. Over time, he has fewer and fewer topics with his grandparents in China, even though he loves them. Besides, there are hardly any Asians where I live, I've only seen one or two Chinese people over the years. It's really very difficult to keep up.
One thing is for sure like my son and all my friends children even those kids were born in USA to study in elementary school just because your daily life in a place which they were maturely change their mother tune to speak English, and English is their daily live communication . That’s it . Nothing wrong with it .
It happens to every Chinese immigrants family, your son will eventually forgot how to speak Chinese even your wife speaks Chinese. because nobody speaks Chinese at school, that the main reason.
My kids were born in NZ. Oldest boy grown up in NZ until 7, went to China for a year for primary school (He's already in years 3 in NZ and native speaker). When he came back to NZ when he was 8, he said he couldn't understand what his teacher says and didn't know what to response I was shocked how much he has been brain washed in China and forgotten English. It took him another year in NZ to be back to native English speaker. It's interesting watching this change.
Agreed. Definitely a challenge for kids to speak mandarin. We all hope that as long as we speak mandarin to them they will continue speaking mandarin. But the truth is that they will reply in English. Language immersion school is a great choice but if that is not an option, online class is probably the most helpful way.
@ thanks for reply! yeah you mentioned in the video. Glad to hear that! Duo lingual is a big advantage, providing different opportunities and perspectives of viewing the world. You have done a great job and hope little Mike continues enjoying Chinese!
Language is all about the environment. Many ABC who grow up in the US could not speak proper Chinese, let alone a mix family. Those I know who are bilingual usually travel to China oftenly or have very strict policy such as only speaking mandarin at home
It's good that you're aware of it and try to find a solution. I have 6 cousins, all born in the US. All but one would not speak Chinese at all. That's rather shameful to be honest.

If you do not want your child to not able to speak Mandarin. You need to provide only speaking Mandarin environment this can be at home. So he receive the exposure and speak it. Then, when he is back in China able to speak the language to his grandparents. Maybe every year you can go back to China able to have him speak the language.

hi mike~any english private lessons available for adult? I checked on the Lingoace website it seems only for kids

Can’t wait for the day when your wife joins you to do a full episode in English! I’m sure everyone would be super interested! 😄
Xiaomai is blessed to have a good father like you, amazing teaching
小麦 is sooo cute, thanks for sharing!

All the Singaporean Chinese kids are exactly like your son even though they learn Chinese 华语 in school

Bamboo Garden. Haha, it is everywhere across the US.
It's good that you're aware of it and try to find a solution. I have 6 cousins, all born in the US. All but one would not speak Chinese at all. That's rather shameful to be honest.

So far so good. Our plan is 2x per week but we might upgrade to 3x per week.
A very common issue
Take kids to china in the summer for 2 months, they will speak Chinese right away
He has roots in both countries.
He lived in a traumatic time in China - zero covid - when the hazmat suits told him once that they would take mommy away from him for not testing for covid. I will never forget that inhumane moment, which you recorded. And the govt separated your family with quarantine. I will Never Forget what they did to people like you who had no recourse.
Cary
Mike is one of the best white dads who marry non native wives
Don't worry about it, by the time he grows up he probably could get an AI translator for $10 and instantly translate to any language on the fly.
And maybe find a few Chinese kids from your relatives' families to practice Chinese with him online. Or maybe ask Xiao Mai to open a TH-cam channel for himself. :D
Where is his mother?

Why don't you have another child? Xiaomai won't be so lonely.

My aunt lives in Cary!
