The U.S. education system has various flaws, but starting from the third grade, children are taught that the country has a constitution, that they are citizens of the nation, and what rights and obligations they have. In contrast, China's education teaches children how to be grateful to the Party and even tells them that it is the Party that provides for their families. When the interests of the Party conflict with family interests, they are told to choose the Party. As a result, children brought up this way are unfamiliar with concepts like citizens and taxpayers. When they encounter difficulties in life, they often blame the United States for oppressing us. Therefore, if there's a choice, I'd certainly choose the US education system.

My kid has the same situation. He doesn't hold the Chinese citizenship. But fortunately we apply the Chinese Green Card or PR for him at the last moment of his first year primary school enrollment. At first he was allocate to a very far away primary school. But we went to the education office, and they change the decision and allocate my son to a good primary school which near my home. I’m living in China. My husband and kids are Chinese citizens while I have permanent residency. So my kids go to our local public school which is nice. We live in a tier 4 city. It’s nice, good education, and cheap. There are pros and cons to every country and you just have to decide what’s best for you and your family.
Very good video clip. I think you definitely made the right choice for 小麦。I’m a doctoral degree background, and worked in mncs 20 years, my daughter is Chinese American mixture too, I 100% agree that those expensive schools have no values, the only value is your kid can make rich family friends. In the way of academic or basic study, it’s not needed to be too expensive for education, it’s actually bad for young children between 3-15 years old. At the end of the day, overall kindergarten, primary school and high schools. The total knowledge and practices are not much, it does not needed to spend too much money in schooling. As parents we should save more funding for kids from 14-24 years old when they go to higher education, and funding for their work start ups after university.
It’s funny, I was born in the Houston metro area. Growing up my parents moved us to northern Wyoming and I always wished growing up I could have gone to school in Houston. Fast forward to an adult, I’m SO glad my parents made that choice. I was so privileged to go to school in Wyoming, schools were well funded education was above standard, safe, great gpa. Houston has some of the worst grading and safety levels in the nation which is why most try to go private here. In America if you’re in a city where most choose private, it speaks volumes about the districts you live in.
Are you teaching in America? I left the US because teaching is so unsafe there now. I hope your son has a great experience and is safe at school every day, because that's just not the case for so many American kids and teachers right now. I have massive PTSD from teaching in the States and I'm glad to not be there anymore. Where you live looks lovely thought :)
We have a little 3 year old right now. My wife has been thinking about doing one of the options that you considered - basically going to China for a couple of years right around 1st grade or so to help solidify his Mandarin. But we haven't yet made a final decision on doing that. Right now we live in Utah, and a lot of the schools here also have Chinese language immersion - so that's another option we are considering. When I was growing up in Texas there was about 1 or 2 years in which my elementary school did a "year-round" schedule, and we really loved it as well. It worked essentially the same as how you described it in your video.
Totally understand your way of thinking. Right now my daughter (4yo) is in a private kindergarten with mostly Chinese kids. She would also have problems to get into public school in Shanghai. For us as well paying for international school would not be an option considering that our daughter could enter any public school in the EU with ease. Hence, when school time comes, we also are considering a move back to the EU.
The year round schedule is an interesting idea! We don’t have that in my county. My children go to a Mandarin after-school that picks them up from school but even so, maintaining Mandarin level is difficult.
Germans are generally not in favour of private schools, in their opinion educations should be absolutely fair and basic education should be free so that all children can get education, that's why there are private schools, but they are not so popular. My son went to kindergarten in China when he was 5, but after one day he refused to go, the reason was that the classroom was not like a living room like in German kindergartens, and the children had to sleep at noon, they had to sit in a circle and sing and read, and they had ‘have to’ too much.
We are in Texas, at one of the best ISDs in the metroplex. Great schools from elementary to high school. Excellent teachers and great students. My kid is an 8th grader, they get 30mins free time at school to finish any homework for the day so they can focus on extracurricular activities after school. There are lots of clubs, sports, music and field trips to keep them busy, kids often have to arrive early or stay late after school for practice. He spends most time on other "homework" like tennis matches, robotics and orchestra competitions, volunteer works-- all required by the school.

Compared to China, no not as much pressure. Some parents put more pressure on their kids than others. We did not want my son to face so much pressure as a kid. He's pretty smart so I'm not at all worried about his academics.
