Nolan cared alright. His life on Earth, especially Debbie and Mark, changed him.
That's why he wasn't happy when Mark finally got his powers. He hoped that Mark would stay a normal Human. His plan was basically to wait until both Debbie and Mark died of old Age and then take over Earth. Mark getting his powers forced him to act his Orders out early.
And everything he said during this Episode, he wasn't trying to convince Mark. He was constantly trying to convince himself that what he was doing was right. That his responsibility to Viltrum still mattered more than his Family. And in the end he failed and abandoned his Mission.
The biggest thing aliens (in fiction) always fail to calculate is humanity's drive and will. They also fail to understand how infectious it is to not just other humans but aliens as well. If aliens did show up tomorrow, I'm sure that would be one of the 'good' things our race would get credit for 😂.

Nolan's change of heart during that flashback was him deciding he could play pretend for the eighty years or so of Mark's lifespan. He could be a distant grandpa then once Mark kicks it, the Viltrumite takeover can begin.
But he bet everything on Mark not being a Viltrumite and gaining powers. Once he did, along with the lifespan, there was no more justification for putting it off, so he had to start making moves like killing the Guardians of the Globe. Remember, dude looks in his late fifties early sixties as a Viltrumite. That means he's been alive for THOUSANDS of years, and the time he's spent on Earth is like a three day weekend compared to the rest of his life. That it had enough of an effect to give him any pause is actually crazy when you really think on it.
Yeah, he cared about them. And while people think the pet line was out of pocket, they forget how much they love their pets more than their fellow humans and treat them like part of the family. But he was a Viltrumite his whole life outside that three day weekend. And he really didn't expect anyone he cared about to live long enough for it to matter. Now Mark will, and that effed up his whole plan.
Also the pet line is partly misunderstood by most because he's mostly referring to the length of life of your average pet versus the human lifespan, how humans may have dozens or hundreds.
I really love how this episode sorta shows how terrifying it'd be for an effectively immortal person to grow attached to loved ones, knowing they're going to lose them. That's what Nolan meant (wrongly) by calling Debbie a pet. We know we'll outlive our cats or goldfish by 10x years, but it's not wrong to love them and value them.
That Debbie could have such an impact on planet-conquering Saiyan-like Nolan after what amounts to a weekend in his long lifetime... kudos to her. She saved humanity.
Let's give some major credit to my boy Mark, though. Debbie may have planted the seed but none of that would have mattered here if it weren't for Mark and their conversation. He still would have gone on to finish his mission if Mark hadn't dissuaded him with the love of a son for their father.

@jhonhoppins522 That's true, I'm not undercutting that, just trying to give Mark his due credit. Because ultimately in that moment it wasn't Debbie dissuading him from helping the Viltrumites conquer Earth, it was Mark himself and people keep overlooking that just because Debbie said a beautiful speech to Nolan several years earlier.

You can see that the entire time Nolan isnt just trying to convince mark, himself as well.

The fact that they had her do that immediately with no sense of the lack of consent from him, and it was just a-okay for them and some viewers is wild to me. Easily the most "problematic" part of the show for me. Honestly would have preferred the old Amber dynamic from the comics over this toxic shit.

still can’t get over the fact that nolan is probably thousands of years old. imagine all your life you grew up thinking conquering other planets is a normal thing. then you fall inlove for real with your wife and your son. when i realized this i kind of get his genocide mode and his “pet” remarks. i’ve read theories last yr about if mark didn’t get his powers he could’ve waited 100yrs after mark and debbie dies before conquering earth and i choose to believe that
If I don't cry during this episode I at least tear up. Nolan gained humanity during his time on earth regardless of how he feels about his 'prime directive'. I always feel so bad for both Mark and Debbie. Especially Debbie. "We live so long she's more like a...pet to me." This show is amazing, and it was so cool to see y'alls reaction to it. Super excited to see what other shows you two do.

NOTHING has glued my eyes to the screen like episode 8 of Invincible. Delivered so much on the promise from the end of episode 1. Just incredible.
As someone who has read the comics, i can tell you if they do the next seasons well, youll still enjoy what comes out. I also suggest watching the atom eve special that recently came out. Ill also say, keep in mind this season was about nolan pretty much, the other characters werent fleshed out intentionally, but with nolan gone, they can flesh them out alot more and make you care about them more
To me it felt more about Mark and how he learned the real and hard way of what "with great power comes great responsibility" truly means.
I kinda wish we'd have some realistic Marvel & DC adaptations that go this route. All that brutality and emotional trauma that comes with it is always left out but that would make for such great stories.

@Dark__Thoughts I mean the whole show is about Mark and hos journey in life, what I meant was the focus OTHER than Mark this season was nolan, with him gone, characters like eve, or the guardians or some of the villians, can be explored more and I can assure that they are well written
The part that always terrified me about Nolan’s explanation of real Viltrum history is that he is basically saying I’m the strongest thing on this planet, but if you put me next to every other Viltrumite in the empire I’m a pretty standard member of our species. My dedication to the cause is what really sets me apart. I can’t wait till the Viltrumites that look like actual elderly people show up. That is going to be some legendary super Saiyan Broly energy!
The revelation of the true intent behind Mark's superhero name, sure he is a tanky mf but his name truly stands for his spirit. It takes nothing less than an invincible spirit to see your father, the strongest man in the world, turn out to be the worst villain and to still try your hardest to fight against him without any hesitation no matter how broken and bloody you become.
When the flashback of Nolan at Marks baseball game was what made me like Omni man even more and showed he cared for humanity at one point nd still kinda does and made sense why he just left earth while crying this episode was amazing and brutal all the way especially while alot of people were dying like nothing while Mark tried to save them while being beaten by his own father and failed great characters and story nd loved your reactions to it throughout especially this episode maybe one of the most intense fights in superhero genre for me.

My favorite part about that moment is that so many pieces of media explore immortality or semi immortality in different ways, but most of it can be summed up into "It's a meaningless and lonely existance"... But that's the thing. It wouldn't be meaningless... If you have at least one person you love to be always by your side.

Nolan changing so much his actions after mark got his powers where i think due to the fact that nolan forgot what he came to this planet for after finding happy life and family i think you are right about he was just waiting for mark and debbie to grow old and die and then resume his plans but i guess he wasn't truly mentally ready as to what he was going to do after his son got his powers.
And don't worry about the future story its going to more brutal then ever and every content showing up in future will surpase each installment then the previous ones what you just saw in this episode.
They absolutely were right. The show left this out for some reason bur in the comics when this fight happened Nolan literally says to Mark that they could take over the Earth and rule it for a hundred years before handing it over to Viltrum.
He literally was planning on waiting them out before resuming his mission, because technically he had all the time in the world.
Love the series. Now we know why Nolan was unhappy Mark got his power. The human lifespan is like gnat for him. Even if he cared for Debbie he's going to live long enough to forget she ever existed. That would mess up your emotional attachments. But Mark getting his powers his power means he's going to live forever pretty much. Nolan can't put off his job until after his family passes away anymore. Hence why he immediately went after the guardians. Also why he showed up at the new guardians training session. He was checking up on possible threats. But they were so bad he deemed them not worth the effort. Mark's training as well. Nolan kept hitting a little too hard. Mark needed to start learning the hard lessons but Debbie kept derailing that, so Nolan let Battle Beast teach Mark the lesson for him. That's why he was just hovering overhead. He wanted to make sure Mark lived, but having his face smashed in like a fruit bowl was perfectly acceptable.

*ARCANE* : If you guys haven't seen it (S1 is 9 episodes) - that would be a great show to see a reaction for something outside of anime. Great animation, great music soundtrack, great story/characters.
Absolutely great idea, I've seen probably every reaction to it and it's never enough. Although, it is still called anime, according to some definitions of that word.

What definition would consider Arcane anime? Anime is Japan developed or originated. Even loose definitions limited to eastern influence (Korean, Filipino, etc.) Arcane is made by a French studio based on an American property.

No its the other way around actually he beat his son's ass so hard he had to put himself in a flashback to take himself away from the fact that mark is gonna be walking like mr crocker from fairy odd parents after this. The ass whooping was so devastating he had to do the flashback for his son his son can't even flashback out. A beating so devastasting you get a flashback instead of the one that is getting beaten is crazy.

I think the main theme is what's a hero and how can they save people.
It's a subversion, deconstruction and reconstruction of the American super hero comics.
One great thing of Invincible is that it isn't never ending. It has a finale.
"i do love your mother, but she's more of.. a PET, to me." is the most devastating line in the universe and i think it broke me more than anything else in this entire episode.

To Nolan the twenty years he spent here were like a two week vacation to us.
This episode isn't just brutal in terms of gore, it also hits pretty hard emotionally. The first time watching this was really hard for me. It's kinda what I was always wondering about in superhero shows and movies. Not just the inevitable gore that they hide to make it family friendly, but also what this does psychologically to the heroes, and all those who were left behind.
Definitely do the Atom Eve special that came out recently.
I'll also suggest The Legend of Vox Machina again, the animated show adaptation of Critical Role, a D&D campaign setting played by a bunch of well known voice actor friends over the years.
I Think A Great Show To Watch Next Would Be Avatar: The Last Airbender. Its A Cartoon/Anime With A Really Great Story. I Think You Guys Would Love That Show.
Give it up for Debbie, the true hero of the season.

Lindsey is right Mark getting his powers made Nolan decide. If Mark and Debbie were human he could wait for them to grow old and die. I mean he took out the Flaxan homeworld in a few months. He could probably destroy earth in days.
But Mark being a viltrumite makes what he has to do will be seen by Mark even after a hundred years
Not because he wanted to conquer Earth for Viltrum but probably because he loves Mark.
If Nolan continues to betray Viltrum. Mark will be hunted by the Viltrumites, Nolan is strong but there are many Viltrumites. Then there is Mark's life as a viltrumite he will watch his mom, his wife, his children grow old and die and Mark is still young.
If Mark embraces being a viltrumite maybe he can meet a nice Viltrumite girl and they can spend eternity together
well not exactly because marks a viltrumite but hes half and will still have thousands of years of age so even if he did have kids with a human it would be the same situation his kids would most likely also have viltrumite genes and also live long lives and since atom eve can change atoms she could theoretically use her powers to prolong her life somehow if mark ends up getting with atom eve
This is what a good twist is! This allow rewatchability. Nolan words from the start of the season has double meaning to it. When he talk about responsibility, he is not talking about being a hero but a viltrumite. When he talk about getting stronger, he is not talking about fight crimes but actual Mark's survival. If Mark is not strong enough. In viltrumite sense, he is already dead.
While compare to squid game. The ending twist completely destroy its own plot.
so, revisiting a supposition from a few episodes ago.... Was it ego, guys?
Nolan cared. Nolan trying to convince Mark was really just him trying to convince himself. If Mark were to never gain his powers, Nolan probably planned to take a "mini-vacation" until Debbie & Mark died of old age before he would conquer Earth. Another 100 years probably feels like a blink of an eye to Nolan. Kind of the opposite of Red Rush feeling like one second feels like hours.
There are many estimates of Nolan's real age. Assuming a parallel to humans living 90 - 100 years then adding age deceleration over time, I was estimating Nolan to be around 4,000 to 5,000 years. I could be really underestimating it here. After my estimate, I read somewhere that no Viltrumite has ever lived past 100,000 years.
*Concerning the side story* -- Amber to Mark - "I guess we have both been lied to". She saw the battle between Mark and Nolan. Yet Again - Amber makes it all about Amber's feelings. She compares Mark's secret identity to protect loved ones equal to Nolan's secret of conquest and mass bloodshed.
The cartoon scriptwriters just cannot help themselves. They continue to write Amber as a gaslighting narcissist with psychopathic tendencies. Then Mark acts like he is lucky Amber forgives him rather than telling Amber to knock off the selfish gaslighting and get lost.
Definitely gotta watch the Eve special now.
Invincible is rather a good show, but i can recommend Arcane. The show is a real masterpiece with tons of awards.
Watching this reaction at the train part I found myself thinking; yep we have finally broken Carson.
Him calling Debbie a pet is probably normal for them.
You could compare it to having a dog or cat, you love them and care for them... But you know you are gonna outlive them easily, and you often value your own kind more than theirs.

This episode was it, it was a blast. We had an Omni Man redemption arc? Either way, he's on the run now, as he's betrayed his planet and what they stand for, so his people are definitely gonna want to do what he couldn't do and take over earth, as well as go to find him and kill him for failing his job, just because. I can't imagine Omni Man being a threat anymore, after seeing that he spared Mark's life and he left Earth completely it seems to go into hiding. That shows he does have human emotions and he's more human than his ruthless people in his planet, which is crazy to say considering the things he's done, like that train scene was so crazy, I think it is memorable. But despite the destruction and the lives he's killed, he is still more human, more loving, much caring than the rest of the Viltrumites besides Mark.

he was not after fame or glory. after all, what these people think of him matters little to him (so he claims,a t least)
he was not driven by random envy to his rookie son. in fact, he wanted his son to be at his side.
His murder wasn't a random act driven by weird feelings towards his son. It was cold, calculated and ruthless, a way to remove apotential threat to the empire.
His son gaining powers was merly the reminder to hi of what his actual mission here was and he beleived he couldn't abandon it.
and despite it all, there is some good in him, buried beneath his loyalty to his planet. He does care about his wife and his son, but he cannot envision a life with these people over the empire he served loyally for so long.
After seeing the Atom Eve and William scene, I’m kinda bummed that the show decided to make William gay straight from the get go rather than him slowly coming out like he did in the comics. He even dated Atom Eve in the comics (she did it to get closer to Mark, which is kinda weird) but even during their relationship, William gave hints of him being gay. So it would’ve been cool to have an actual story arc for him rather than him just being gay and that’s it.
That’s very interesting and puts a lot of the show into perspective

One thing the show hasn't explained properly is that the utopia Viltrum promises is temporary. They strip the subjugated planets of their resources and leave them to die, sure the humans would have a great time for a time if they don't resist but it wouldn't last.

It may not seem like it but all this was hurting Nolan tremendously. He was just stuck between his thousands of years working for the viltrum empire and his duty and all that and his family. And aside from all this he still one of the nicer ones out there by a lot. 😂 When they do get to animating more this show you'll find out that Nolan's actually a pretty great guy compared to the rest of them especially this one female viltrumite.
I did read the comics, but I'll try my best to avoid any spoilers. The show is quite a bit different from the comics (the writer of the comic works on the show, and has been trying to make improvements that he didn't think of when making the comic (mostly pacing)). Based on the comics, the next stuff after this is quite different, I don't think it'll hit as hard as the first season, but it is still very good. Depending how the pace the next season, it might not be until the 3rd season that they hit new heights than the first season, but that depends on how they pace the second season. The second season should still be pretty good though (albiet maybe a little weaker).

The difference between the Saiyans and Viltrumites is that the Viltrumites weren’t enslaved by another race and forced to become mercenaries. Viltrumites did the conquering all by themselves. Before Frieza, the Saiyans were a bunch of squabbling cavemen that killed each other over food.
So in this whole fight, Mark did actually manage to save one person. The pilot for the second jet.
