I really think leaving the Lions at this juncture is a mistake. It takes sooo much to get enough of the right people who are all on the same page to start doing something that is special. The Lions are doing that and to abandon ship is leaving a great opportunity to put a pretty significant star on your resume. In coaching years he is very young and he will absolutely get his opportunity when it is the right time.
He was down to having two options and I gotta say, I still wouldn't want to go to Washington. Mike does make a good point. Not everyone gets a 2nd chance and you need to make sure it's perfect.
Just go watch the St Brown brothers podcast you get the answer directly from Amon Ra St Brown. Ben Johnson called, said his heart is in Detroit and there’s unfinished business here. Simple as that
Crazy thing is that the media is so careful and thoughtful about reporting any salary demands from Ben. When it was Lamar Jackson a league MVP year earlier no one had any issue speculating about salary demands and labeling him as asking for too much. Ben is happy in Detroit and the Lions have a REAL chance to make history and win a Superbowl. Ben knows this. Detroit loves him and his family and there is more to accomplish! 313 GRIT
I hear you but the salary cap makes that conversation surrounding Lamar extraordinarily more complex. As a player, you can objectively ask for too much because it handicaps your team’s ability to retain other players
@@Luke-cb8ub We love capitalism until it comes to sports. I hear you about the salary cap but watch this if I'm a player that's not my problem! That's why billionaire owners pay for attorneys, accountants and specialists to manage the salary cap! Then we all know their was collusion on behalf of the owners because none of the teams with huge amounts of cap space even would sign him to an offer sheet and make Baltimore meet it!
Regardless of the reason it's a huge win for the Lions and their fans. It's all speculation because no one is in Ben Johnson's head except for Ben Johnson
Im kind of with Florio on this. I think he would shoot himself in the foot going into a situation like Washington thats not a full rebuild but dam close to it. If he was already a HC with like way more experience and ready to take it on from every direction. Coming from an OC to that has so many moving parts where he can just get shafted before he even gets comfortable. Plus I can actually see the Lions getting better next year. Maybe they dont get to the NFC championship game but he can still beef up his resume a little more.
How do you guys not understand? Ben wants what HE wants. If you want him for your job, that he doesn't want YOU pay 15m-- he doesn't want to HC for a new owner or second rate owner? Absolutely! He loves what he does, and where he is so you other second rate rich billionaire ownership groups Stick It! Using psychology by a 'Lowly OC' on a rich owner to get the upper hand is the smartest thing Ben could do-- he is not desperate to become a head coach, but it seems some owners are desperate to save face with their unwillingness-- Master Class control of what Ben can control by Ben-- much respect
I saw Florio talkinf about the lions and i was hesitant to click it, expecting typical BS, but man I was surprised. He made good points about people potentially damaging Ben Johnson's character, and how that could have a huge impact. They made some speculations as to why he stayed, but that ties into their point of: we dont know why, so why proclaim a reason if you arent sure of it.
Seriously, think about it. When was the last time, as a Detroit Lions fan since I was a child, we are talking glowingly about an owner, general manager, coach, AND AN OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR? We have superstar management.
Positive work environment and culture is a powerful factor in employment decisions. It's not always about money. The fact that many are so upset or confused that he didn't pursue the HC position is indicative of the toxic work environment he was looking to avoid.
Cuz they're building something special in Detroit, and WAS is far from a slam dunk or perfect fit. Ben will continue to garner interest in the future and he'll do so wearing the ring he helped win in Detroit.
I think he's staying where he is because he's smart. He's in a good situation to further improve his career rather than go to a dumpster fire with loads of risk. Every year there's new coaches placed, and next to none of them are going to the Super Bowl. There can be an argument about money, but Detroit is setting franchise records right now.
Florio can’t bring himself to even entertain the idea that maybe, just maybe, Ben Johnson likes it in Detroit and feels like there’s unfinished business there.
He's 37. He doesn't have to be a head coach right now. Especially given how tenuous being a heat coach is. Would he be out of a HC job at, what, 42? Then what? He can stay in Detroit for 3 more years and be in a good place when he's done. If he wins a superbowl... that price is staying high.
Has anyone considered Ben Johnson is simply staying put and waiting for the LIONS and DC to mutually agree to part ways at the end of his contract then take the LIONS HC job? Maybe Dan has already told him he’s not going to continue coaching after his contract is up. Ben Johnson HC in Detroit in 3 yrs….????
What's the worst case scenario that he's not got the same opportunities next year at age 38 that he had this year? Still the offensive coordinator of a team loaded with Young talent. I think he'll be just fine I don't know why this is so shocking to people
Well, now we know who started the Rumors. The problem with Florio is that he’s a ViQueens fan and he hates the Lions. And it shows in his “alleged reporting” other than his bias, I’m sure he’s a “nice guy”. Also, everything that Rich just said about the Washington Job he already has in Detroit. An ownership that will to pull out all the stops to put a winner on the field? ✅ A big 💰? ✅ got it last year when he stayed in Detroit. A special work environment with players he knows, respects, and loves? ✅ Why are they flying to see him?? They were also flying in to interview Aaron Glenn. Only get one shot?? Why?? Because Mike says so?? If an Owner or GM is going to go sour on you and only give you “One Shot” when you are already in a special place, with a special job, with special people……YOU DON’T WANT THAT JOB/ORGANIZATION ANYWAY!!!! Get a clue Mike, it’s not that hard to figure out. Don’t overthink it man.
Why does everyone think money runs everything? Obviously there’s a camaraderie in Detroit, and they said themselves, there’s unfinished business. If they have a great year or even make the SB, it’s another feather in his cap, if the offense doesn’t have a good year, I guarantee he still fills a HC spot. And an obvious point, what if Ben doesn’t like any of the open jobs?
Florio never gets it. It’s about Dan Campbell and the freaking Lions! The dude is 37 and wants to win a Super Bowl, and Detroit is by far his best chance to get there.
Intriguing mystery…A Lions’ Super Bowl win in 24/25 will allow him to write his ticket. Maybe Campbell said he’ll retire next year after a SB win and Johnson will get the Lions HC gig?
Would it not be better for him financially if he waited to join the headcoaching ranks until he is part of a Super Bowl winning coaching staff? Obviously he believes Detroit will win one soon. Perhaps he figures he'd get better coaching terms wearing a Super Bowl ring?
its not all about climbing the ladder getting promoted making more money. when your happy in a situation your happy and that sometimes is all that matters.
Ben Johnson doesn’t want to leave yet. Period. He doesn’t want to bail when the team is ready to win next year. He likes being there. Why is this difficult to understand. It’s not always about money.
to me its crazy how none of these reporters can fathom that he just loves his current role and wants to stay and building something special. vs going to a terrible job just to stroke your ego to say you got to be a head coach
It really gives us a glimpse of who they truly are. They can only see money, power and ego. They assume everyone thinks and acts the way they would and can’t imagine being content with where you are.
Everyone saying "Oh he just wants to win the SB and then find a new HC job" as if the Lions or ANY team are a lock to win it is just crazy. If your ultimate goal is to be a HC, u take it. Considering both WAS and SEA jobs were available, it says to me that hes just not ready to take on a HC job, whatever his personal reasons are.
why would anyone in the Detroit organization return a phone call from Mike Florio. The guy is irrational in his hate for Detroit. I would ghost the dude too.
Maybe 15 million was his way of saying he wanted to stay - 'I love your car, name your price. $15 million. Uh, I don't love it that much' Right, because I was never gonna sell it and now you won't bug me about it. Its not like the Lions matched his offer right? So it can't be money as the only factor. His family loves the area - he loves the team and has unfinished business. I think its as simple as that.
It seems to me this is what happens when you have a job you like and a recruiter comes asking if you are interested in listening to another offer. Sure, I'll listen, but you're going to have to pay me to leave this situation that I really like. I've been there before, I gave them a number big enough that I thought they'd pass and they ended up making an offer. In hindsight, I should have left the money on the table and stayed where I was.
I love how baffled these guys are by someone not just running to the next bigger paycheck. They all said he was 100% leaving, now we have to listen to them explain to us why he's not leaving. Huh... I'll just go listen to Ben Johnson say why he's not leaving. These freaking guys right here......
Maybe he doesn’t think Washington is as great of a spot as outsiders believe. Maybe, just maybe, he wants to finish a job with a team that he enjoys coaching in a city he’s happy in. There’s more to life than money, and Ben’s wallet isn’t hurting.
OMG, People just speculating. As other comments have said, he told St Brown lions have unfinished business here in Detroit. Why do we know this and the experts don't? This guessing game is harmful to Johnson's image when they make him look like he's just after money.
Good point with coach salary, look at the job Detroits coach and staff have done. Idk what he’s getting paid but is it really proportional to the value he has brought?
Why is it in fathomable that he actually likes it in Detroit and sees the potential to be the offensive coordinator of a Super Bowl champion? Maybe he doesn’t think he’s actually ready to be a head coach.🤷🏾♂️
Ben Johnson could be the next up for the lions job. Dan Campbell is a great culture builder. However, his game management skills has cost the lions multiple times. the Dallas game, The buffalo game and the nfc championship game.
I love that he's staying with the Lions. But it is a really bizarre decision, no matter how much he may love the situation in Detroit. This is sort of like a guy that is guaranteed to be a top 3 pick in the NBA draft deciding to play another year in college because he loves college. Hundreds of assistant coaches and coordinators go their whole careers working their butts off for their chance at a head coaching job, most of whom will never get that shot, and Ben just says casually turns it down. But good on him, I'm sure the Ford's are paying him bank.
There's a big difference between this and the draft especially in the past when players weren't paid in college. You're talking about $0 to tons of millions for guys that were almost all poverty-stricken. He's going from what 3 million a year to 10 million a year and he's just 37 years old with no cap on how old he will be when he gets out of the game unlike players. It's called being patient and happy
I don’t think he was actually offered the Seahawks job. Probably didn’t want to go to a perennial loser like Washington. The media likes to talkabout how great a job it was but the media was wrong through the whole coach hiring cycle. All they did was speculate.
The framing is wrong. It shouldn't be "why does this guy want so much" and instead be "why doesn't a 5 billion dollar organization think a top upcoming coach is worth 15mil"?
The thumbs down is for Eisen hitching onto his UM buddy's garbage reporting; an unwarranted smear on Ben Johnson who made it clear to the players that he stayed because of the sour loss/unfinished biz. They teach "Occam's Razor" at Michigan?! At least Florio employs some critical thinking when he speculates..
Mike Florio: "I have too much integrity to say he priced himself out of the market but I've heard he's priced himself out of the market but I'm too responsible a journalist to say that without verification so I won't."
The man loves his current job. Being in a great culture with a great offense might not be worth a few million extra dollars a year to him(probably about a million after taxes)
Ben Johnson is clearly egotistical and all other teams should avoid him. Plus, I heard he puts ketchup on his steak and talks loudly in movie theatres like a subterranean monster.
Here is my take: Tell me why "the Commanders is an attractive gig" to Ben Johnson. You say, they have lots of money, and the #2 overall pick so, you can build the team you want. Ok, but the Lions are already built for him. The Lions have the talent to win games and make another deep playoff run. The Lions have an NFL tested quarterback that he works very well with. The Lions have an offensive line that can protect Goff and let Johnson be creative and run the plays that fit his offense. Do the Commanders have that? Certainly, they might, one day, in the future. But Ben Johnson has done A LOT of losing with the Dolphins and the Lions. Does he want to do more? Let's flip this around. 5 years ago, under Patricia, if the Lions had the same situation, would we still call it "attractive"? Probably not, and the Lions would have had Stafford at that time. The final point, the average new head coach in the NFL last 2.5yrs. So, asking Ben Johnson to walk away from his current situation, one where I am sure he has A LOT of input and freedom in addition to proven young talent, to a situation which is definitely more risky and may not have those same freedoms, I dont call that "attractive".
Lions are closer to Superbowl maybe? You know the real reason to play this game. Maybe he didn't like the GM or Management? I doubt this is about money.
I dont get why Rich is so sure abot the Commanders being a dream HC spot, especially for a first time head coach. First year owners usually have to go through trial and error, nobody really knows how they react to adversity (see: Panthers, who a couple of years ago were also titled a dream spot to go to). The infrastructure of the Commanders has also been famously underinvested in, the stadium (and with it, all of its facilities) is falling apart. They just got rid of two important players on their defensive line and are generally lacking in depth and starters all around the board, from Oline to TE, DB, Edge, LB but most importantly QB. It would be quite the (longterm) project to take on this team and nobody knows how much time he will really get to turn it around if immediate success isnt up to par with the ownerships expectations, who probably want to see their new, enormously expensive aquisition flourish. Maybe Johnson just saw too little security in his only shot to become a successful head coach (hence „asking too much“ which could also mean job security in the sense of guaranteed patience, similar to Campbell in Detroit, who basically got a three year blanco check), or just didnt feel empowered enough to make the descisions he deems crucial to change the commanders path. HC Meetings go on for days for a reason, they want to figure out any detail that could pose a problem with their personell descisions beforehand, and he most likely figured that he should allow himself to be patient, stay in his own proven successful franchise and wait until another opportunity will surely open itself to him in the coming years. But thats just my two cents.

In coaching years he is very young and he will absolutely get his opportunity when it is the right time.
They aren’t going back
He was down to having two options and I gotta say, I still wouldn't want to go to Washington.
Ben Johnson would’ve been great in Seattle
he wants to make history in Detroit, He doesn't want someone else to come in and get the credit. these guys are doing something no others could.
We have superstar management.
they keep saying there are only 32 NFL HC jobs .well there are only 32 O coordinator jobs as well
Positive work environment and culture is a powerful factor in employment decisions.
I don’t think he called Amon Ra to just lie to him about why he stayed. Why are we still so confused all across the internet.
Florio can’t bring himself to even entertain the idea that maybe, just maybe, Ben Johnson likes it in Detroit and feels like there’s unfinished business there.
yep, haters gonna hate, go Lions!
I know why people like Florio are confused because coaches having a spine and integrity is very rare. He wants to finish the job. Thats it. One Pride.
Ben's goals for the Lions is incomplete. 😊😊😊
A big 💰? ✅ got it last year when he stayed in Detroit.
A special work environment with players he knows, respects, and loves? ✅
Why are they flying to see him?? They were also flying in to interview Aaron Glenn.
Only get one shot?? Why?? Because Mike says so?? If an Owner or GM is going to go sour on you and only give you “One Shot” when you are already in a special place, with a special job, with special people……YOU DON’T WANT THAT JOB/ORGANIZATION ANYWAY!!!! Get a clue Mike, it’s not that hard to figure out. Don’t overthink it man.
lol ViQueens, gotta remember that one if there is some annoying chat online
Why does everyone think money runs everything? Obviously there’s a camaraderie in Detroit, and they said themselves, there’s unfinished business. If they have a great year or even make the SB, it’s another feather in his cap, if the offense doesn’t have a good year, I guarantee he still fills a HC spot.
And an obvious point, what if Ben doesn’t like any of the open jobs?
Maybe he does just love the situation he is in and he wants to stay. Stop fishing Florio.
it's not too much money that he's asking, he's simply not ready as his stock will never be higher.
Owners saw his 2nd half play calling and said, Nah, we good.
Florio never gets it. It’s about Dan Campbell and the freaking Lions! The dude is 37 and wants to win a Super Bowl, and Detroit is by far his best chance to get there.
This tells me that Ben Johnson is completely fine staying with Detroit, so he went so high with his demands.
None of these A holes in the media can believe he wants to stay in Detroit and wants to win a SB with his guys.
and for the city and fans as well, that is a very meaningful goal, you don't think he feels that too, probably his kids want to see that as well.
Ben already said he wasn’t impressed with the owners.
Intriguing mystery…A Lions’ Super Bowl win in 24/25 will allow him to write his ticket. Maybe Campbell said he’ll retire next year after a SB win and Johnson will get the Lions HC gig?
Maybe his family, was the reason !!??
Im Happy he’s staying, the Lions needs his offensive mastermind skills
to me its crazy how none of these reporters can fathom that he just loves his current role and wants to stay and building something special. vs going to a terrible job just to stroke your ego to say you got to be a head coach
He just loves living in Detroit! Hahahah
He's a crybaby
@@timothytouhey8682you’re mad haha
It really gives us a glimpse of who they truly are. They can only see money, power and ego. They assume everyone thinks and acts the way they would and can’t imagine being content with where you are.
@@timothytouhey8682Detroit suburbs are actually kinda nice. The city kinda sucks
Commanders were coming to Det to interview Aaron Glenn also. Not like they had to turn around mid flight like Schefter wanted people to think.
Nobody was going to fly just for Glenn get outta here lol.
If he wins a super bowl someone will pay him . And as far as Johnson and Goff I will keep Johnson he has a higher ceiling.
why would anyone in the Detroit organization return a phone call from Mike Florio.
I actually agree with Mike for once
Watch st browns podcast. Ben just feels like there is unfinished business at Detroit.
The irony of this because Florio was the main person who was pushing the fake Caleb Williams wants ownership story
I love how baffled these guys are by someone not just running to the next bigger paycheck. They all said he was 100% leaving, now we have to listen to them explain to us why he's not leaving. Huh... I'll just go listen to Ben Johnson say why he's not leaving. These freaking guys right here......
On Amon ra st browns podcast he said that there’s unfinished business in Detroit
Florid talking about people reporting rumors is ironic. Florio throws out random rumors with no basis all the time. What a hypocrite.
Maybe he doesn’t think Washington is as great of a spot as outsiders believe. Maybe, just maybe, he wants to finish a job with a team that he enjoys coaching in a city he’s happy in. There’s more to life than money, and Ben’s wallet isn’t hurting.
Unfinished business baby!!!!!! Let's go!!!!! It's funny that they can't even comprehend that being a possibility lol
Sewell, on the goal line run, like the fridge. No brainier! Also don't hit on 20 in blackjack
ITS UNFINISHED BUSINESS!!!! 🏆🏆🏆
Why is it in fathomable that he actually likes it in Detroit and sees the potential to be the offensive coordinator of a Super Bowl champion? Maybe he doesn’t think he’s actually ready to be a head coach.🤷🏾♂️
If theres something bad to say abiut Detroit or anyone attached to it.. by god Florio will make sure it comes out if his mouth!
He got a big raise last year
There's a big difference between this and the draft especially in the past when players weren't paid in college.
Washington didn't plan on giving him the job and he knew it. According to Mike Garafolo. That's why he backed out.
Watch the st brown podcast... thats what happened.. ben is loyal
Ben's going to be just fine.
Because he loves his family, and he loves Detroit, and he is pissed with second half vs San Francisco
The framing is wrong. It shouldn't be "why does this guy want so much" and instead be "why doesn't a 5 billion dollar organization think a top upcoming coach is worth 15mil"?
Why does Florio always speak straight speculation?
Ben’s going to Dallas next year. Just you watch.
Ben Johnson is clearly egotistical and all other teams should avoid him. Plus, I heard he puts ketchup on his steak and talks loudly in movie theatres like a subterranean monster.
Mike Florio is missing the point. Plain and simple.
Boy honor really is a problem for the mafia huh
