In 1934, the Detroit Lions and the City of Detroit started the Thanksgiving football tradition, an unheard-of suggestion that professional sports teams play on a national holiday. What's more, the players made little money and franchises made next nothing for doing so. They simply played for the love of the game. They were the trailblazers of playing on a national holiday that other professional sports leagues followed, albeit many decades later. When the Lions approached the NFL about playing on that day, they were laughed off. They approached other teams to play them and were laughed off. Finally, the great George Halas said yes. Fast-forward, and because of being mediocre, the same franchises that laughed them off, wanted (or still want) them removed, primarily because of money, which is unacceptable. The Lions began this tradition by convincing the league to do it. The Lions are Thanksgiving football, whether it's liked or not. The 12:30pm slot should always (good or bad) belong to them. Therefore, if you enjoy football on Thanksgiving, thank the Detroit Lions. Without them, Thanksgiving football wouldn't have become the decades-long, time-honored generational tradition it is.
Amen to that brother. I don't care what anybody says about trying to remove that slide that slot at 12:30 in the afternoon on Thanksgiving Day should always belong to the Lions because there would not even be any holiday games if you ask me if it wasn't for Detroit
Yeah don't get too emotionally attached to him, he was all in on Buffalo until the Lions got good too. Still like the guy, but he jumps from team to team, especially for teams like us. (I'm a bills fan by the way, I think that all Bills fans are Lions believers at heart and want to see the Lions go to the Super Bowl!! Lions are the only team that I would be somewhat okay to lose to in a Super Bowl, and Bills fans hope that Lions fans feel the same way about us!)
Lifelong Lions fan living in Atl. I went to the game at Dallas. We owned the place. I saw jerseys of current Lions players: Hutch Amon-Ra LaPorta Gibbs Jamo Branch Alim McNeill Malcolm Rodriguez Goff Montgomery Sewell Anzalone Decker Brock Wright Derek Barnes As well as some blasts from the past: Barry Sanders Matt Stafford Megatron Jason Hanson Darius Slay Joey Harrington. By my count, that is 21.
It was Lamar Hunt from Kansas City would come every year to the owner's meetings and try and take it away from the Lions but the Fords are one of the most powerful families in the NFL. So the compromise was a third game
The local rumor from the time when the league wanted to remove the Lions is that it was essentially a done deal, but Mr. Ford said he would pull his advertising money, and that's why they added another game later that day.
It's always a joyful time when Kyle can come to the set and they chat in person. I think my favorite was the Jodie Foster thread, however brief it was. I'm still trying to envision her playing fantasy.
So, the top two teams in the AFC...both have great QBs (Allen and Mahomes)...both have great coaches (McDermott and Reid)...both have great Defense and great lines...but no prima donna WRs. Hmmm...maybe that is a formula for other teams to consider!
The 2nd game was because Jerry wanted the gane to rotate, and the owners appeased him with the 2nd game. The NFL then decided to take over the entire holiday weekend, adding in the Black Friday game. It meant the NFL saturated the weekend with games Thursday-Monday. 👀 In fact, they are trying to take over Christmas from the NBA! 🤔All about the Benjamin$$
They have a good coach. Lucky lobbs from love and watson actually had a good game for once. Bears had a dumb coach in a game where they should have won
Broncos look good atm, but if they were to lose to Chargers, Bengals & Chiefs, & Cincy win 5 of 6 (split with Pittsburgh), the Bengals make the play-offs.
@@Idlewyld u wouldn't have expected Dallas or Indy to beat Pittsburgh either. Cincy are good enough to pinch one of those games, especially at home. We shall see in 2 weeks time.
Two months ago, Kyle picked Dallas to win the NFC East, and the Bears to be a wildcard playoff team. National Media jabroni haircuts don't know what they're talking about with their wrong hot takes and predictions and pontificating at the Kool Kids table. Just get some people on who can do all-22 play-by-play analysis or something useful.

If bears would of focused on building around fields this year again instead of starting all over again especially how bears ended season last year they would be alot better this season. Idc what anyone says oh Caleb is better blah blah. Regardless bears lose alot for decisions made like this panthers browns so on. Look at successful teams they stick with HC GM and QBs have couple rough seasons build and success
so you actually think the only teams Mahomes has ever lost to in his career is Cincy, Buffalo and Detroit? is this what you're saying? "Kyle just forgot" lol no it's just that you don't seem to comprehend what's happening here
This Bills team is dangerous because they do not have a star or two to stop. It's a more balanced and deep team. The top end is not as strong as the 2020 team, and I do think they would have won the SB if they could have passed the Chiefs. But the bottom of this team is not as weak. The OL is stronger, the DL is deeper and more experienced. Next man up is truly happening in Buffalo. Milano goes out we find Bernard. Bernard is out we find Dorian Williams. White is injured and gone Benford steps up. Benford or Douglas get hurt Ingram and Lewis step up. BUF lost a lot of 'names'; Diggs/ Poyer/ Hyde/ White/ Davis/ Morse etc. All of those guys were ageing out or had multiple injuries. They were good Bills but had lost a step and were expensive. Ask a Rams fan how White looked, or a Dolphins fan how they like Poyer or a Texans fan about Diggs??? This is a functionally deep roster in Buffalo. They beat KC without the top picks in their last two drafts, both on offense. If a fan of any other AFC team is asked what team they do not want to face, KC may be #1, but Buffalo would be #2 for most fans.
To be honest with you. I wish the Lions would stop playing on Thanksgiving. They always lose. Good team or Bad team. They lost last year, to a inferior Packer team. Twelve Lions had the flu.
It used to be the other way around. I remember Lions would suck, but win Thanksgiving. I think it should be a demon they exercise. This Lions team reminds me of the 2023 Wolverines!
Nope the Lions were the ones that started the thanksgiving game tradition. It wouldn’t exist at all without us, we get deference and keep our game as long as we want it
@seanmcginnis7564 Is interesting. Joey Harrington beat the Lions on Thanksgiving when he was with Miami. I don't think he ever won on Thanksgiving, when he played for the Lions. I can't even remember, the last time the Lions won on Thanksgiving.
If I was a defensive player or coach on Cincinnati, I'd be fckng embarrassed! How they walk around like they're men? Crazy! Im not a Cinci fan, but I'm not a hater. Just imagine if you at the least had the 15th best defense. Y'alld be undefeated. Or atleast close to it. Take your honor back!!!
Playing games on Thanksgiving or Christmas is great and we all want good games but that should be the tradition....football on a holiday NOT Lions, Cowboys on a holiday. The only people who will care live in Dallas and Detroit there are 30 other fanbases out there that should get those games too.
i have terrific news for you... the lions and cowboys are only 2 of the 6 teams that play on thanksgiving!!!! Detroit and dallas were the ones that started the tradition they worked very hard to make thanksgiving football a thing and both franchise should play on thanksgiving until the end of time.
Fine whatever not worth arguing over something so silly. Just know some people really don't care about something as trivial as televised football traditions whatever the heck that even is. I'll stand right next to you when it comes to not changing important, meaningful traditions but this?
