    I love garden experiments! Looking forward to seeing how the pinching compares in the end. I also planted a few new-to-me dahlia tubers this year but was delayed in getting them in the ground so no blooms yet. Fingers crossed they are what I actually purchased! 🙃

      It’s almost like a game seeing if the blooms look anything like they’re supposed to 😆

    Someone said that if you put the pinched part of your dahlias in water it will grow roots. I tried it and it worked!

      I accidentally broke off a stem with a bud yesterday and put it in water to see if I can keep it alive, so this gives me hope!!

    We grew some dahlias last year but they didn’t do much for us so we skipped this year. However, seeing how nice yours are, we now wished we had tried again.

      I know that feeling, I did the same thing with sweet peas! For some reason, dahlia as have done really well in my garden but I’m hoping I haven’t jinxed it now for future years 😆

    Since you like growing flowers, I think you would be the perfect person to try to grow the awapuhi shampoo plant. You should research it. I think it would intrigue you.

    Seems like you don’t get any wild life here in Ontario,Canada. Squirrels 🐿 🦝 raccoons omg destroyed my garden and peach tree 😂. But I love them ❤

      One of the best parts of rooftop gardening is no squirrels, rabbits, or deer! The birds don’t even really bother it either.

    Lovely blooms. This is super interesting to see the results of your pinching. I’m still waiting for my dahlias to bloom here in Ireland. Our weather has been so cloudy this year, we’ve have the occasional hour or so of sun here and there but thats all, really disappointing.

    Hi Bethany - So bother pinching or not ? Will you keep pinching/cutiing? When you say you pinched them? Did you just do one cut per plant ? I am growing for 2nd year this year - last year all got powdery mildew :(

    • @ChicagoGardener
      @ChicagoGardener  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think I will punch again next year. I didn’t notice a huge difference with the amount of blooms but the ones I pinched seemed to be stronger and support themselves better, especially when we had strong winds.

    Nicely done. Do the drips completely saturate the soil, every time they run? Also, how much sun do these dahlias get?

    • @ChicagoGardener
      @ChicagoGardener  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They get about 9 hours of sun and yes the drips saturate the soil! I have had to come out on very hot days and water with a hose in the afternoon if they need a second water, but luckily that hasn’t happened too often.

    I didn't realize they made shorter dahlias! I copied your older grow bag Dahlia video and it's doing better than my in-ground. EXCEPT the heat is rough on everyone! I'm in Atlanta and yes in the 90s it's droopy looking. It's funny bc I'm actually trying to grow Cafe Au Lait identical to yours but I think American Meadows sent me the wrong kind. I need to fertilize mine. Ive collected rain water to give them but I'm not sure if it's helping. Also pinching is interesting because in Atlanta it's so freaking hot, maybe delaying the blooms isn't a bad idea. Either way I've learned next year I'm planting all but maybe 1 in a grow bag. And I'll copy you and just leave in a grow bag over winter.

    • @ChicagoGardener
      @ChicagoGardener  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m so glad the grow bags have worked out for you! The heat has been so bad this year, and was oddly much worse in June.

    Your dahlias are growing very nicely. I can’t say the same for mine, I live in zone 8b. My plants are pretty stunted and the leaves are yellow. I have aphids and I think spider mites. What do you use for pests and blood suckers like aphids? Thank you so much and great job 👏

    • @ChicagoGardener
      @ChicagoGardener  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m so sorry your dahlias aren’t doing well! This has been an abnormal year for pests so far, in that I’ve barely had any. I’ve had more wasps in the garden than ever and I think that has helped with pest reduction. I have seen some cucumber beetles and aphids and I’ll either manually remove them or use a hose for aphids but I also use captain jacks dead bug brew and Bt.

    When you leave it in the grow bag, do you cut off the leaves and just leave it?

    • @ChicagoGardener
      @ChicagoGardener  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I cut off everything except about one inch of stem above the soil line!
