Thank you for your videos. I'm located in northern Illinois, too. This is my first year trying out Dahlias. I purchased four established plants from a garden center and will use grow bags like you suggested. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they will thrive on my deck despite not having full sun. I've had luck with sunflowers, so I wanted to try these gorgeous Dahlias.
Thank you for this video :) I am a beginner and this was very helpful! Bought some plastic containers for mine but decided to switch to grow bags after watching! (I’m in Seattle so plenty of rain here too)
You are my hero, I am growing them for the first time this year in containers. I am in GA, and started 2 already. One is about 2-3 inches and the other is 1 inch. You are my go to person for everything Dahlias in a pot or container and also Zinnias 🌻
Great info, Bethany 😊 you’re definitely starting these dahlias right🥰 I’m curious to know if you like that Burpee potting mix? I’ll be stocking up on potting mix in 2-3 weeks in preparation for my balcony garden and I wanna make sure whatever I choose is good quality but also not expensive 😅
I started a few in containers too and they all sprouted and i put them in a south facing window but they seem to be a bit leggy. is it ok ? or should i cut them down? I know I will need to support them but I'm wondering if they will produce like normal with such a leggy start
After your plant gets about 4 leaf sets, you can pinch it to make it bushier! If it’s warm enough as well, you can move the dahlias out to get some direct sun but move them back in overnight. That should help with the leggyness.
It would depend on the mature size of the dahlia in starting. I’m going to sow some dahlia seeds that get at most 16” tall and those I’d put 3 in one 7 gallon grow bag. If your seed packet has spacing recommendations, I’d follow those!
Very pretty choices for this year! I’m using tubers from last year and the tiny sprouts are the only reason I’m hoping they regrow since I stored the tubers in not ideal conditions.
Those Dahlia colors look great together ❤! Looking forward to watching them bloom on your rooftop!
I can’t wait!!!

You’ll have to let me know how they do!!

If you get a lot of rain, grow bags I’ll be safer. I did do two in larger plastic containers and they survived, but I feel safer using grow bags.
Great segment on planting dahlias; looking forward to their progress as I know you are. Thanks!
Thank you!!

That’s so exciting!!! I’m happy to know my videos have been helpful. Is it already warm where you are?
Son muy buenos productos
Hey !!! Whatever works for you 😉 TFS
Excellent share
Thank you!!
@@ChicagoGardener always a pleasure
Did you make a video on growing cantaloupe on your deck. I have so many deer my deck is my only grow spot. That's for all the info you have given me.
I have this video from the first year I grew melons: th-cam.com/video/Oknb0nsdfpU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=NnLGRj0GwezCWj5p let me know if that helps!
@@ChicagoGardener That I will do. Thank you so much.
Yes I understand now on what I need to do. The video was very informative and I think I will do well. Thanks

I like it so far! The only brand I’ve had a bad experience with is Vigoro.

If you were starting dahlias from seed, how many seed started dahlias would you put per 7 gallon bag?

@@ChicagoGardener - thanks ! It's one of Florets mixes so I think it varies.
Raised bed soil also work?
That should work just fine!
@@ChicagoGardener thank you
What compost do you use
I’m not tied to any particular brand, whatever is available at the garden center. The one I used this time is Blue Ribbon Organics!

I’m still waiting on mine from last year in the garage to sprout. Keeping all my fingers crossed they do!!
