    Along with the good points made here including licensing I think Shuji Utsumi is right to look forward. No matter how technically brilliant the DC was I'd wager behind closed doors the shogun elders at Sega view the Dreamcast as a painful memory. Or maybe I'm reading into this too much!!

      I definitely think there’s a stigma or hangover about Saturn and Dreamcast, and that’s why they don’t want to bring them back with a modern product, 100% believe that.
      SEGA are thriving just now and they don’t want to resurrect what they see as negatives in the company’s past. That’s my belief anyway! - James.

    My Sega wet dream is a Model 1, Model 2 and Model 3 collections for PC.
    How many of those were never ported or had underwhelming ports.
    (some System 16 and 32 would be nice as well)

      I second this. I'd add in the SEGA X Board, SEGA Y Board, SEGA Video-Titan, Naomi, and Naomi 2 games to that collection.

      @gabrieldias3479 16 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @thomaskane7810 I think since there aren't many games for Model 3 and Naomi, they could share the same collection.
      Even Capcom has released their Arcade Collections which covers a lot of their CPS line up. Although the scope is different than what I'm proposing.

      @@gabrieldias3479 I think the Model 3 has 20 games ( Not counting updates like VF 3tb or S.C.U.D. Race Plus.) while the Naomi I believe had up to 59 games. ( Also not including updates, and only counting games developed by a Developer under SEGA.)

      @@thomaskane7810 THIS MANY? 🤯
      HOLLY COW!
      I thought it had way way less. Now I'm curious to see the full list, I'm gonna google it up.
      Thanks for the info!
      (EDIT: So I went to check. I've found 26 games for the Model 3, but some of them have a lot of small updates/revisions, so it would go down to 19 games. Naomi, indeed, has way more and I didn't bother to count 😅. Fun fact is that I tend to believe that everything was Model 3 except for some higher quality simulators like Ferrari 355, while, in fact even the Versus series were Naomi based.
      One BIG issue Sega would have releasing a Model 3/Naomi pack is the huge amount of racing games with expired contracts so... They either would have to be left out or use fake licenses, which would be a shame either way.
      Anyway, let's hope that someday Sega gives us a proper Arcade Collection from System 16 to Naomi)

    While I like modding my retro systems to unlock their full potential, you can't say this is a replacement over a Dreamcast Mini and watching the video I don't think you understand the appeal to the mini systems, it's not a matter of having all your favourite games in one box, this is what modding is for, it's about portability and convenient, mini systems are small with pick up and play factor, you can throw them in a suitcase or a carrier bag when you travel, you don't need to worry about AV cables, controllers, power supply, memory cards, or any of the extra hurdles you get when using a real hardware, a mini system makes for a great travelling companion and also a nice gift... I prefer modding a system personally as it is more customisable and you get the best experience thanks to the homebrew community, but it is not replacement to a Dreamcast Mini.

    • @SEGAGuys
      @SEGAGuys  16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You’re right … it’s not a replacement to a Dreamcast mini; it’s superior. Being able to “throw them in a suitcase” doesn’t make up for them being an inferior, diluted experience which is what anything from the 5th Gen on would be due to the increased use of brand and music licenses which no longer exist and SEGA won’t pay to re-acquire.
      I mean, can you imagine a Sega Saturn mini without Sega Rally?

  • @bundjohn
    @bundjohn 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Another con for the mini would be that I assume it wouldn’t include any network connectivity for online play. I would love a mini version as when I looked at an original unit plus mods it was about £200.

      SEGA had previously said that a mini Saturn or Dreamcast would be far more expensive than the likes of the Mega Drive Mini 2. I guess we’ll never know now, unless there’s a huge change of heart (or leadership) in the years ahead.

    Probably for the better. Those mini systems tend to often disappoint anyway, whether it's due to the limited library of available games, not having the ability to add games, play the original games or just sub-perfect result.

    They should have made a Sega Mini that played Saturn and Dreamcast games...and make new peripherals like the gun (dreamcast) I never got to get and the phishing rod (although still got one). I bet they would be making lots of money on that. But since we not getting that..any info how to get new peripherals, or is it just hunt the net and hope to find second hand ones that work..?//////////////

    Can someone answer this question? With how powerful modern hardware is, or Xbox series x and PS5, couldn’t Sega make an app that could be installed with the Mega CD/Saturn/DC ‘console code’ and then you could. Simply put the disk in and play it off the console?

    I'm alright with that. My Dreamcast has now gone up in value. Listening to the opening music on this video, how great would it be for someone to update SR2 and having it run at 60fps on the Dreamcast.

    Good video. My vision of getting Dreamcast on the same level OG Xbox is almost fulfilled. We have a flashier ode menu now. Ian Michaels compilation discs show the multimedia capabilities with crystal clear movies and ogg/mp3 music player. Emulation is getting better with perfect neogeo cd/genesis/gb/gbc/sms/c64. Translations from japanese to english continue to come. Online functionality improves with more game working online and more websites for games being made. The dev scene is leveling up now as you can see with the infamous GTA 3 port and a game jam. Very exciting times. All on original hardware.

    I am so on board with this - my Saturn and DC are so perfect now they're ODE equipped (thank you again James!!) that i would just have no need for a mini. TBH, given my little anbernic emulates 16 bit and before so well i wasn't really fussed by the MD or SNES mini's either so maybe i'm not the right audience!! there's really only one thing i'm missing - HDMI. saturn through OSSC looks OK - but gotta admit even with all the kit it still probably looks better through a mister with dedicated HDMI output. having a mini with upscaling out the box? could be tempting... however! that's saturn... OG DC through VGA to OSSC?? absolutely unbelievable!! i swear, you need to play xbox 360 before anything looks better... so, saturn mini? tempting, maybe, just about... DC? i'm set, thanks Sega!! - bedgell

    As cool as the GDEMU looks, I really wanted to be able to keep my GD-ROM drive so I opted for the GD-IDE mod with DreamShell. It isn’t nearly as easy to do but it lets me dump my own games to a compactflash card and run them from that card. Also one thing you didn’t mention is most people need a console to have HDMI output to fit in their home setup. The DC digital is a tough mod to install and a good scaler might be hard for a “normie” to even figure out they need let alone get a good one. Great video though! Wish a mini was coming for Skies of Arcadia alone to get some modern love.

    All it will take is new management and they will release a mini. Atari were going through similar things about 5/6 years ago when everything changed so I wouldn't put much stock in anything Sega are currently saying. As usual they will go where the money is and if they hit a string of failures they will come back to the retro pot again. For a company that is leaving retro behind it doesn't say much for that when they are putting out all those MyArcade licenses systems.

    I think most of the industry concluded that the mini console era is dead and has limited returns in investment. With that, it becomes a business decision. If that means more money for new iterations of retro games I would be all for it.

    Dreamcast did not sell well in Japan, I imagine this has a lot to do with it. There isn't much nostalgia factor there for most Japanese gamers unfortunately. Ditto Europe, Sega really didn't market the Dreamcast very well outside the UK

    Actually he's right. SEGA isn't a retro company. They always strived for the future rather than wallow in the past. If they were retro they still be releasing games from 1981 from the SEGA Gremlin vector era. Doing updates to several games doesn't make them retro. Most of these games are designed to get new fans into the brand. Half of which are only getting a new entry because they're attached to movie and TV deals. SEGA fans like us are few and far between now. And were just a section of SEGA fandom who are fans of a specific part of SEGA's history. Part of the reason why there wont be DC or Saturn minis is because SEGA those systems are seen as being a hub for their arcade ports and has decided to port some of the classic arcades as part of the Astro City and mini arcade series. They just released ten new ones in japan including ports for Dynamite Deka and Fighting Vipers. And then there's the new subscription service also coming. Which is why its cheaper and easier and more profitable for them to release their older games in that way rather than mini consoles of the saturn and DC.

    • @SEGAGuys
      @SEGAGuys  9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      SEGA were always a company ahead of their time with their hardware, but the modern day SEGA *is* a retro company, its heritage and identity are rooted in the legacy it forged with that innovation.
      As I said in the video, they can be retro without ignoring modern gamers and vice versa. Theres no need to pigeonhole their identity.

    • @ROJM-cc1gp
      @ROJM-cc1gp 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Modern day SEGA or the SEGA sammy era is hardly retro. If anything whats defined them so far is making countless sequels to Two of their biggest games which is sonic and yakuza or publishing titles of pc companies and buying them out. But that's in the west. In japan, any new game has mostly been released on mobile phones. Arcade its been non traditional interactive arcade games. Non game wise is the development of advanced software tools. For them to be a retro company they would have to be exclusively releasing retro games and nothing else. Which they don't. All they do is release collections of old games which is something they been doing since the megadrive while releasing new titles. That hasn't changed. Whats changed is the focus. New games appear on mobile and almost japan exclusives while stepping back on creating new console games and only focusing on a few established titles with lots of sequels. Any thing that defines them as a company is they do a bit of everything, game wise. So yeah he isnt wrong but then he is saying that for business reasons.

    I don't think a mini is necessary at all. The regular Saturn and Dreamcast are still plenty fine. I don't need any mods either. I have almost all the games too, so I don't need to pirate games either.
    I really don't like it that piracy has become so normalised today.

    • @SEGAGuys
      @SEGAGuys  16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I don’t like that some label the use of abandonware “piracy”.
      These games are dead and buried, and they’re being lost to time as discs rot and collectors entomb games in plastic protective shells that sit on shelves.
      Jailbreaking a modern console to run games you can buy today from a store or online, is piracy.
      Running ROMS on ODE’s for games that are in danger of being lost entirely, is preservation .. and I’ll argue that point until my final breath.
      I think sometimes the issue some have with ODE’s and ROM’s is that they don’t like others having access to games they’ve (over) paid collectors for physical copies of.
      Everyone deserves to play these games, not just people with pockets deep enough to pay the obscene prices in retro gaming these days.

    • @CasperEgas
      @CasperEgas 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @SEGAGuys I disagree. I don't think most people that pirate do that because they are some sort of hero to game preservation. In the age of the remaster and remake it must be very clear that companies still view old games as assets. It is not up to us to decide whether or not we think their intellectual property is now worthless to them. Also, whilst retro games sure have gotten more expensive, most don't even exceed the original recommended retail prices. People just think they need or have the right to hundreds of them, which isn't true. Even if you don't want to spend much, there are plenty of options to have fun with.
