Country of Origin: Scottland and Wales
The breed was initially bred for herding. These original collies were descended from localized variety of herding dogs from Scotland and Wales. The Rough Collie had been used for centuries as a sheepdodg in the Scottish Highlands.
After the industrial revolution, dog ownership became fashionable. It is believed that the Borzooi was mixed into the rough collie, producing the longer more noble head. Today this is the the main feature of the breed.
Todays Rough Collies are more show dog than working dog. The breed has been developed to be an excellent companion animal and fits perfectly in most homes. If you are looking to herd with your Rough Colie, then you will want to seek a breeder who’s program is specifically breeding for herding instincts in their rough collies.
Rough Collies should be of sound temperament, showing little or no nervousness or aggression. Rough collies are generally great with children. The breed is considered a one family breed, meaning that have a strong bond and loyalty to their original family. Aside from a possible visual deterrent Rough collies are not considered to be affective guard dogs.
Rough Collies are generally a healthy breed. Obviously a breeder who health test and breeds only healthy dogs, will produce healthier Rough Collies. Health issues facing the breed, include Colliey eye anomaly, a genetic disease that results in improper development of the eye and possible blindness. Progressive retinal atrophy can also be an issue in this breed. Hip dysplasia, a common issue with most medium to large breeds is also a potential concern.
Activities
In addition to herding other activities this breed excels at are agility, fly ball, obedience, tracking, and confirmation.
Grooming
Rough collies need consistant brushing to keep their coat in show condition. Dog’s in pet homes need less brushing maybe once a week, with a little trimming here and there.
Conclusion
The rough collie is beautiful and majestic. It is an amazing companion dog that will fit nicely in any moderately active home. It will be loving and attentive to its family and provide years of companionship and adventure.
I am interested in all dogs but the collie captured my heart 50 years ago with Lassie. I have owned 5 collies, everyone of them were gentle and easy to train.

Are they high energy?
The world needs more dog breeds with little drive and placid temperaments because the vast majority of homes need that kind of dog for a pet. I've lived with collies and they're so sweet and easy and lazy. Great dogs.
A couple of things about rough collies that you haven't mentioned:
- they shed a lot but don't have a typical 'doggy smell'
- they actually can be quite protective of the family/house, but they don't have the drive to bite
- very good with children
- moderate energy. can be quite lazy but need daily exercise
- there is quite a large distinction in looks between 'american-line' and 'english-line' rough collies
I see a lot of people say they shed alot, but I have german shepherds and had Huskies and my collies are no where near the sheding level of those two breeds. They do need more grooming though, they easily get debris and tangles in their fur. Their is a smooth coat collie if you want the personality without the long fur. I have 3 rough collies, 2 sables, 1 tri, I want a Merle and maybe a smooth. Mine will bark at strangers, but wouldn't take much to win them over. Edit: got 4 now.. just got a 5 year old sable headed white, she is a sweet heart. Super laid back and is great with the chickens and critters....shame her owner was trading her up for a rottweiler though.

Collies in the country collect every burr around, but the trade-off is good, for the caliber of dog.
@@thetightwadhomesteader3089 So true. As the owner of 2 collies over the years - a third upcoming - they don't shed anywhere close to short hair dogs. They blow their coat twice a year and the rest of the time their shedding is very manageable - and the idea that they need constant brushing is simply false. There is no more congenial, beautiful, smart dog.
Outside of coat - is there difference between the rough and smooth collie?
I am 30 years old, had a collie since a was 5. I cant imagine life without them. My collies Will have a TH-cam page. They are the best!
My first dog when I was 10 years old was a rough collie. I could walk to my friend's house, go inside and watch TV, and come out a couple of hours later and she would be waiting for me on the porch. She was a wonderful dog and very protective.

I had a rough collie as a kid. She was very loyal to me and protective of me.
This is such a great breed. I had a male in high school and a female later on life. So smart and a great companion. So alert. Not a guard dog, but great watchdog. When barking at a stranger, I found that the stranger would stay away because of the size, it seemed to intimidate them.
Our Collie was great in letting us know when somebody was around.
It's a dog most suited for rural life. Hate seeing it become so much a show dog. They have so much else to offer.
My love affair with the collie began with Lassie and I still love the breed today. They sound like the perfect pet.

I got my fourth rough Collie in March of 2020 as a 9 week old puppy. He's a sable and white with the full white ruff and white front legs - just like every Lassie had. Just for fun, I've taught him to 'come' when I whistle the theme from Lassie ! :) He's just a great dog like all my Collies have been. A little trick he taught himself - from when I first had him - was he LOVES to walk between my legs, as I walk, and ALWAYS from back to front ! He pops through, and gives me that big " Aren't I clever ?! " Collie smile. What's not to love ? :)
I promised myself at 5 years old, one day I will get a Lassie dog. I am currently on my second rough collie.
Many still have work in them, they are gaining popularity as a service dog and rarely do breeders only show them.
My Collie is my service dog, but he's also my best friend!
I have always thought they would make great pressure therapy dogs as my collie mix has always leaned up against us when we pet him!
I have a rescue and she is WONDERFUL,SWEET, AND LOVING. She rarely barks, I got her when she was 7 years old through a collie rescue group. They matched us perfectly! We are both retired couch potatoes.

i had a particular rough collie for many yrs. my niece loved my dogs from the time of her birth, and whenever she came to spend the night the first thing she said was 'can the dogs come in the house?' one night i heard her screaming 'make him stop! make him stop!' i ran to see what he was he was doing to her, and he had her herded into a corner and wouldn't let her out! she was 3 yrs old at the time, and she wasn't hurt; she was furious lol!

I grew up with a collie and she was amazing and gentle.

Many collies still have working temperments, just like any herding breed. They love jobs and more often then naught, NEED one👏🏼. My tri rough boy is a PTSD/psychiatric response service dog. He has lots of work drive and he didnt come from a breeder who breeds for work ethic.
Collies are also very prone to sensitivity towards different medicines, the most common being Ivermectin. They also are prone to Grey Collie Syndrome.
Its interesting how these traits randomly pop up. I have 2 working line German shepherds given to me, but they don't have the drive of the working lines and are laid back. Had showlines with much more drive and energy. One does have spot on natural guard instincts, she will growl, bark even bite, but if I say it's ok she will love the strangers to death. My collies see sheep and are like nope dont want nothing to do with that lol

Any Lassie TV shows or movies that I was not around yet to see I watched in reruns. I love them all and Lassie is still one of my favorite TV shows LOL I am at the age now that smaller dogs are easier for me to have so I went to having Shelties. They are not the same breed but have the same temperament as well as both outer and inner beauty. Collies and Shelties are definitely two of my favorite breeds although I like all dogs!

Not real sure where the idea that collies don't "work" anymore or that the herding instinct has been bred out of them. Might want to catch a show or two or attend a herding trial. There are plenty of them working all areas - Agility, Herding, Obedience and Rally. A lot of them are doing Therapy and service dog work. How do I know because I have two and know of quite a few breeders who's dogs compete regularly and or are service animals.
I all so heard that the collie don't herd anymore too because of breeding, But I'm glad that their are breeders out there still breeding collies for work. I hope more and more breeders start breeding collies for work and not show. I hope to hear or watch more of collies working in herding and or other works as will. Collies or so beautiful.

I have one, his name is Memphis, he's 1 year 9 months old. i would HIGHLY suggest the breed, they are absolutely incredible.
I have a female Sable from "working lines" who is not registered and she is an amazing, emotional dog who seems to know what I'm thinking. But the breed can be very independent and stubborn depending on the lines, also very prey driven and protective.
I have two sable rough collies. Father and son. I have to say they are a beautiful addition to a family. They have made our lives so happy. Please keep in mind that they must be groomed. We have our boys groomed every six weeks but they look like hollywood dogs. 🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕♥️

You missed a couple of health issues. Collies also can bloat (more common than hip dysplasia), and can have ivermectin sensitivity (active ingredient in livestock dewormer). And by sensititivity, I mean it can kill them. There's a genetic test to find out if they have the mutation.
I have two rough collies father and son. Yes they bloat if you give them processed dog food. They should be grain free. We have a local poultry farm that now makes raw patties fresh daily. We give them the duck because of high omega count. I cant tell you how significant the improvement in their health. For starters, bm are firm and smaller, they are at normal weight( they were slightly overweight), skin and hair very healthy. They are happier and energetic. We keep our dogs indoors in the AC in summer monrhs. Of course 3x a day walks that are about a mile. My point, the more you fuss over your collie the healthier and good life your dog will have.🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕♥️

My aunt had one of these dogs, and we where always told it would bite us if we'd try to pet it. I grew up thinking Collies where aggressive dogs... I wonder what happened that made that dog so unsafe.
Under socialized, my male tried to nip my niece. Had to train both dog and kid cause kids tend to move around fast and are noisy. Collies dont tend to like a lot of noise and a kids movements/energy level is different from an adults. Otherwise collies love most people and at worst will bark at strangers. Their usually great with kids just in my case I dont have kids and never really had a chance to socialize him around them. She was runing towards him at the time so that was the main reason for him trying to nip her.
My mom raised and showed this breed.
Great dogs. My only issue with them is they were so mouthy. Meaning they barked nonstop. I could handle the grooming ove the constant barking.
I dont see were mine are that bad least compared to the german shepherds I've own most my life....then growing up my mom had little dogs (chihuahua and wiener dogs mostly) which nothing in this world is as noisy....literary every move or noise you made they'd bark at you...non stop. The collies are more voiceful if they want something or dont like something though.

I really want a collie but I work a full time job. I got my first collie when I was 12 and I trained him to go off leash in a field and on our lawn in just 3 weeks at the age of 15 weeks. I work a full time job and I am going to give him 1 hour of field exercise in the morning and 1-2 hours when I come home. I will also be paying a neighbourhood kid to walk my dog around the block and play with him in my backyard for a bit. Do you think my dog will be ok.

How much food an adult rough collie should eat?
Mine are a bit overweight so I wouldn't be the best to answer that lol. They are a breed that will just keep eating (prone to getting over weight) and seem to have a slower metabolism then some breeds. Just look on the back of the dog food bag and see how much it recommends for size and weight, its usually just a base line though. It's hard with rough collies because of all the fur, just have to use your best judgement. If you feel any ribs, hip or back bones then they need more food.

So sad that the lassie movies just about destroyed this breed. Glad some breeders are bringing back the working qualities. I was going to get one but the wait lists are so long for a healthy, well-bred one that you could have to wait up to 5 years for a puppy. Ended up with a Belgian Shepherd instead and don’t regret it at all. So many fewer health concerns...

I have never heard a good comment about the health of collies. They are plagued problems.
So amusing to me that people choose a pet breed and then do back flips trying to argue that they can work. What makes the Collie a great pet is the same thing that makes them non-workers. For the most part they're low drive, low intelligence, low difficulty, simple and sweet. Occasionally a peppy one will come along - but if you carefully check out that dog's adult siblings, they'll be duds too.
The VAST majority of dog homes will do best with a dud; a non-working dog.

i own two collies and you are right. they still are able to herd just out of instinct, but as pets compared to guard dogs, working dogs or hnting dogs, the traits mentioned by you make them very pleasant to deal with
