    My male rough collie passed 19 yrs ago, I cry when I see this video. I'm 64 years old and would die for the chance to have another one.

      I had to put my rough down 3 days ago. She was 14, I adopted her at 6 yrs. I'm 75 and adopted her worried that she wouldn't get the exercise needed as I lived in an apartment but even at 70 I had no problem with that as Collies are just as happy napping in the corner as running free. I was a volunteer at the local kill shelter and that's how we met. Get one you'll never be sorry.

      @@lunaazule1899 I am so sorry that your Rough Collie has gone over the Rainbow Bridge. I know exactly what you mean about collie temperament. We have two herding dogs and for the first two years it was go go go. All of a sudden they are happy to just laze around the house. I know there is nothing I can say to make you feel better about your loss. I am sure I speak for everyone on the channel that out thought are with you.

    I cried during this video. Our collie passed away a year ago, just 1 month short of 13 years old. Your collie looks almost exactly like my Bailey, who I miss so much. I've decided not to get another one right now, since we travel a lot. I don't miss the fur on the floor, but the love was priceless.

    • @DogThecity
      @DogThecity  4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      You sound like a wonderful dog owner. Sometimes people do realize the commitment that it takes. Our ability to leave at a moments notice for travel is all but gone. The reward is so great and would not trade it. But some days I do miss the ability to be free for anything.

    • @unaestrella1876
      @unaestrella1876 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! I'm thinking of getting a Sheltie next year! I have a garden and a decent sized house. Definitely not too big. How much exercise do you give him a day? And do you do agility, or obedience training. Is agility compulsory? As I don't have a club like that near me. I can do training in my garden (more complicated stuff) and long walks, fetch , frizbee, and biking but with biking I don't want to hurt his joints so I'll have to wait until a year old, and with a slow pace, sometimes a fast pace and lots of breaks. How do you groom your sheltie? What brushes and what order, do you ever have to use scissors or thinning shears, or can you just brush (excluding the underside of the paw, and nails). How did you socialize him? Please give me tips because I'm worried about that the most, i have a friend who has a golden who I can socialize him with but that's just about it :(. How do you socialize him at dog parks, of pet shops? I hope you can answer my questions! Thanks!!

    • @TheMissEmuhlee
      @TheMissEmuhlee 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@unaestrella1876 all good questions! So we do not have a yard hardly at all and I walk him about twice a day (a mile after everything is said and done). I always make sure to do one big, fun activity with him every week, whether that's the park to walk a few miles or taking him to play with dog friends for an afternoon. We also play in our small front yard often in the afternoon. My husband and I work full-time so I walk him when I come home for lunch and when I get off. He's adapted very well to the schedule. Shelties are very eager to please! As far as grooming, use a fine tooth brush that gets their undercoat. I brush him every week but I should be doing it twice. I have a mobile groomer come to us once every three months. And lastly, in regard to taking out and socializing, don't be afraid of the age! Absolutely take your puppy to parks and such. Of course, not until they have their last round of shots at about 15 weeks. Look into pet stores near you - our Petco has a puppy playtime every Saturday at 1 that they can play for an hour with other puppies up until 7 months old. One of the trainers facilitates it and it teaches them how to play and interact safely.

    Gwen I’m 62 and we are getting our Akita puppy at the end of September. Our female Akita is 12 and we don’t have much time with her. After I get my Akita boy trained I am getting a collie. I have severe rheumatoid arthritis. I can’t take the medications that would prevent bone and joint damage. We just do pain management. I intend to live every moment to the fullest. My dogs are necessary for my peace of mind and my heart. I just train or have them trained early so I’m not wrestling a badly behaved large dog. Go for it Gwen!

    I grew up with a collie; named Miele. Incredible animal. After he died, my family got involved with German Shepherds which we've owned, bred, trained & shown both here in the States as well as in Germany. I, still to this day think of Miele! As great as the Shepherds are; i still miss Miele. The 2 breeds share similarities; strong prey drive, enjoy doing obedience, loyal & protective. But, the collie is more sensitive and docile around the house. I have many ask me, because they know how much i love the German Shepherd; if i were to get involved with another breed, what would it be, a Doberman, Rottweiler, Belgian Malinois, Giant Schnauzer? I say no to all; i tell them it would most definitely be a collie, hands down! The older i get the more I'm becoming more drawn to my child hood dog, the collie. Yes, i have a 2 year old male German Shepherd now, plenty of both time and room for a great Collie puppy too.
    I truly enjoyed watching the video, took me down memory lane; got me thinking once again,,,,,,,

    I never had collies but as a child I remember seeing them walk on the street with my neighbor. He had 3 incredibly smart collies that didn’t even need a leash. They were majestic and so intelligent. Pretty much the entire city (200k people) stopped to watch as he passed through the streets. Everyone wanted to pet them. They were pretty much the celebrities of my town. I always wanted to have one until I started to read more about the breed and realized it wasn’t a match. They need a lot of exercise and fun activities to keep them happy and healthy. I am more of a couch potato. 😊

    Hi there. A very nice video of the growth transition over 12 months. Your dog looks wonderful. Thank you for sharing. I'm one of those eternal owners-to-be as i live in a flat and its a bit difficult to convince my wife to accept a dog in the apartment. I'm contending with a choice over a white swiss shepherd or a dogue de bordeaux for quite sometime now but the rough collie was one of my first breeds of choice. Your video made me reconsider that. How well do they do in apartment life. Thank you again for sharing the wonderful footage. Take care.

    • @DogThecity

      Great Comment! Our dogs are Hearding Dog so they need a lot of exercise. You need to be very dedicated to raise an active dog in an apartment. We walk three time a day rain, snow, or sunshine. To keep you dogs happy with out any behavior issues you need to keep them active. A tired dog is a happy dog and happy owner. The dogs are like my kids so I have lots of spare time to delicate to them. Also having an elevator is a big plus if you dont live on the group floor. Our Collie mellowed out very fast and at two years she is much less active the our 4 year old sheltie. Sure you would be a great dog owner as you are asking the correct questions. It is a commitment of 14-16 years of life, glad you are taking it seriously!

      @@DogThecity Hi there. Thanks for the reply. When I envisage becoming a dog owner is pretty much in the way of "adopting" a pet-child. 😊 I would like for them to become a part of the family and the family life in all our daily routines, as much as us adapting to their needs and somehow changing our habits to meet them in terms of exercise. I'm a great fan of the outdoors and enjoy going for very long hikes and weekend escapades that allow for the opportunity to explore and walking around in the mountains, seaside or within city areas or suburbs. I wouldn't dream of having a dog to leave him behind at home while the family goes away, even if we're just going out to get some groceries. I'm a firm believer that a pet can become a true friend and a creature that you can grow to love and care so much for. I live close to the beach - a 25m walk from the house - and around my neighbourhood there are a few nice city parks with specific areas for dogs, where they can run and play with other dogs. I thought of getting a rough collie because 1. I love the "boy-scout" soul of the breed and 2. Even if they require exercise like all dogs do, they're not as high-energy as other sheep-herding breeds (border collie, malinois, etc) and 3. They seem to be quite happy lying around the house if you give them those 2 or 3 daily walks for them to burn steam. Anyway, for the moment it's just one of those long-cherished dreams I hope life will give me the opportunity to fulfill some day in the near future. Take good care and continue posting videos. It's my daily bliss - dusting my dreams with other people's video happiness. Cheers 😉✌️
