      It's just a fact that you can't turn carbon steel into stainless steel. All he did was remove the protective bluing from a carbon steel slide (using the wrong technique, I might add).

    Ummmmmm. People, please don't do this. You cannot make "Stainless Steel" out of a steel barrel. The bluing (The black color on the steel slide) is a coating that protects the steel from rusting. If you remove it, the slide will eventually pit and rust. I suppose if you have to experiment with it, the 709 is a good choice because it was never much of a gun to begin with, but don't ruin a good gun by trying this!

      It won’t rust if you take normal care of it like always keeping it lubricated. Or you can just nickel plate it. I’m going to gold plate mine all you need is a gold plating kit which is like 800$ and you can gold plate and nickel plate and it’s very easy to do.

    • @jmsmeier1113
      @jmsmeier1113 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yes it will. Normal gun metal is carbon steel and will rust. Stainless steel has nickel added to it during the smelting process. To be clear, lower grades of stainless are still subject to pitting and rusting. The general, let me repeat, the general rule is, if it’s stainless, a manufacturer is unlikely to put another finish on it to begin with. Conversely, if you buy a gun with a finish on it, odds are it’s carbon steel.

    Congratulations, just fucked up your gun. First of all you’re not gonna get a mirror finish using sandpaper on the gun, you scratch the surface, until those scratches are buffed out you’ll never get the mirror finish that you’re looking for. But more importantly, removing the blue down to bare steel doesn’t make it stainless, it just makes it bare steel. Stainless steel has nickel added when it’s being made.Let me know if you want a tip on how to salvage that gun before it rusts.

    • @arturob5306
      @arturob5306 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So then what would you apply to the steel afterwards to prevent rusting? Surely theres some coating you can apply

    • @jmsmeier1113
      @jmsmeier1113 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@arturob5306 you have a few options. Cerokote, that requires baking the finish on at a very precise temperature, so should probably be done by a professional. Then there’s duracoat that pretty much just paints on and air drys, but if I recall, you polished all the surface imperfections out of this gun and brought it to a true mirror shine. So, providing this is the case, there are plenty of utube videos on colt Royal blue nitre bluing. This is an amazing finish that I can only describe as a blue chrome look. The colors change in the light and this was colts premier finish on the original pythons. It’s imperative that all the scratches are out, and the gun really does reflect like a mirror. I’ll include a link where you can get the salts to do this, but you need to educated yourself on the process. The depth and tone of the finish is dependent on the temperature of the salt bath and the length of time the parts are in it. Good luck. www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&ved=2ahUKEwjJv97bgor1AhVCneAKHRoNDcYQwqsBegQIBRAB&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D-vF3zKiUIkY&usg=AOvVaw2ibTEntaSKukBB_YD9X697

    You can‘t blue stainless steel. Blued guns are made of carbon steel, not stainless steel. By removing the blueing you just made it look like stainless steel. The bad thing is carbon steel is going to rust without the blueing. The blueing was protecting the surface.
