Frightened Batty Karl Gives Me A Piece Of His Mind

Please never use any fruit tree netting you can poke a finger through as it's extremely dangerous for all native animals but especially for flying-foxes.
Rescued this afternoon by Mr Batzilla, Carl and a heavily pregnant lady were trapped in large aperture anti bird netting thrown over a fruit tree.
Karl was very tightly wrapped and he didn't mind giving me a piece of his mind but this is his way of defending himself with big scary wings and a mouth full of batty warnings.
Heavily pregnant lady is very flat and she has clearly been caught in the same netting for a couple of days.
The jury is out this afternoon as to whether she and her baby will survive but I have put her in a warm incubator with IV fluids and oxygen.
Fingers crossed for her and for sweet Karl.

This is where the saying “Bats are more afraid of you than you are of them” really puts into place. Honestly, if my mom or I were right there, we would keep our distance as much as possible.
Once he's experienced some of your hospitality and the ever magical bribery of a banana, I'm sure he'll be a bit more willing to be friends. Hope the female recovers.

Agreed, Lady Batzilla has the most gorgeous, smooth and soothing voice. It's the aural equivalent of a warming hot chocolate on a cold day, or a long, cool drink on a hot one! She'd make a fortune as a voice over artist.
Batty people tend to have such a wonderful bedside manner for the poor traumatized batties. Such a blessing to have people who care for these wonderful creatures.

I've been hit by bird wings so I can't imagine how painful getting wacked by a boney and clawed bat wing.
He’s kinda scary until you realize he’s clapping. Like what I would do to shoo away a something
His wing claps, is that part of driving away a predator? He seems mystified that you aren't eating him. Thank you for showing us because while I have seen Big Wings, I have never seen this clapping (sort of like a threat to grab you). How terrifying to first be confined and then find oneself among large creatures. My best hopes for him and the little lady.

I hope the pregnant female Survives her netting injuries. I have seen how horrific netting constrictions injuries can be, and it is extremely painful-excruciating!

in our community garden a woman has a pile of this netting in her plot. she doesn't even garden lately luckily so no attractive food. i think they just don't know how horrible it is for whatever is caught.

Your message should be put out on the main tv channels in Australia. If anyone from the audience has anything to do with tv can you please give this lady a chance to spread the word, perhaps do a monthly rescue tv programme. If her message spread further and wider more lives could be saved.

It's probably a good thing he still has the wild instinct.
The funny thing is flying foxes don't really have the problem of bonding to humans or failing to learn how to survive in the wild because they're so much more strongly driven to socialize with other bats compared to humans. They can be really friendly to humans but they almost always prefer other bats. If they need some time to get back to wild speed, they hang out with other bats for a while in an open enclosure and then just leave when they're ready. They're intelligent enough to pick up everything they need to know even if they missed the time they would have naturally learned it.

Great footage, I've never seen that behavior before, it's pretty clear that he's quite willing to defend himself, he looks very healthy. It will be funny watching him being affectionate with you.
