I was having Ed withdrawals… glad you are back!
I swear me too
Same, after a few days I'm checking lol. Need it. 🧐
Lookuh dat hood. Lovely
thank you so much for your contribution and continued work! Can’t wait to see what’s to come
Looks good mate, enjoy
Hell Yeah Ed! Congratulations! 🤙
Great videos by the way. You confirmed many things I suspected.
Anything you do will be helpful. Wherever you are with your process, what project are you working on, any of the little nuances in between... move your stuff forward and at the same time explain and share the science to us best you can... and answer specific questions publicly as opposed to privately so we all benefit... tell us about ur experience (it's ur platform, the mushrooms are not the only star of the show, they are your co-host). ☮️🍄
thanks
Nice FFU!
Maybe a camera above showing your techniques would be a new and cool addition
Good to see a back Ed!
Hi Edward, I really love your content! Your easy going and relaxed manner makes learning from you a pleasure :)
Love your work! Your videos have helped me like nothing else 😁
Thank you so much for the kinds words. Been a rough day.
Professor Ed!! Awesome content, keep the videos coming!
The spores I ordered arrived! The two swabs look great cant wait to work with them
What's going on Ed! I appreciate all your videos, they have definitely taught me so damn much especially all your live videos of you answering so many questions. Can you make a video on how you prep your sub??? That would be very very appreciated! I know you boil the CV but it would be nice to get a whole video on it. Thanks again for your in depth straight to the point teaching!
I have been meaning to make a video of my whole sub prep. Thank you for reminding me. I basically use 80% coir, 20% verm by volume. Then I load it into a big pot, add an excess of water, cover with lid, and boil/steam for 30 minutes. You don't have to soak or add exactly the right amount of water. Just enough to hydrate it. I then squeeze it a handful at a time when I mix with spawn.
I will add this video to the list. Thanks for watching.
Good job homie
Love it! Thank you for your time and knowledge 🙏
Nice to hear all is ok
Just got some of your genetics. Can't wait to run them. Definitely planning on getting more. Thank you for doing what you do and being who you are. 🤘
Love the new set up 🙌
Dr. Ed, I graduated from university almost 20 years ago and rarely have the opportunity to ask advanced science questions to knowledgeable people such as yourself.
I never realized how valuable an experience and opportunity it is to be able to get high level answers from PhD-educated scholars. The older I get, the more I realize how little I understand. So thank you for helping demystify the world little by little.
Even though it won't get you the most views, I hope you're still open to doing some videos about a bit more advanced topics on genetics, breeding, etc. (e.g., how does Monsanto track whether their seeds are being used by farmers to "illegally" breed successive generations; how does Monsanto prevent you from being able to grow plants you get from the store; how does environment affect gene expression; etc.)
Thank you for your kindness, content, and teachings Dr. Ed.
Thanks for the ideas. I will hit those topics. I don't care about views. This is all to help people and maybe learn some things myself. I think constantly learning is the way to keep life interesting and stave-off dementia :)
Glad to see the process!!!! Can't wait for Tent camping with Ed no.4!
P.S. I had a damn gooood feeling you was naked!!! ahahahahah Rock on!
#GRANDSWORLD
🔥🔥🔥🙌🙌🙌
Your the man brother thank you 🍄🙏💙
Do you sit on that couch behind your flow hood? Also, why are your cultures in a tent? does that provide anything extra besides just shelving?
The couch came with the house. I don't use it. Tent is just a slightly dirty/old Martha. Just use it for shelving now.
@Edward Grand Could you do a video like an instruction video that I could follow using your Great White Monster and Bee Pee swabs showing your recommended technique using your swabs PLEASE. I get confused like am I supposed to grab drag , do a S swipe or a Z swipes or maybe a geto swipe 🤷♂️ There are so many that seen you do and I'm excited to use your genetics and I don't want to mess it up.
I use the 'grab and drag' technique with all my swabs now. It is superior to all the other methods I have seen. Make sure you get the spores/cotton piece jammed into the agar crevice. That is the key to it's success.
Is there ever an instance when two monos will not create a clamp?
Yes. If they have the same mating alleles (or they are contams). I have found almost 100% compatibility with monos that are not from exactly the same cultigen/parent. I don't worry about it anymore. If you have two clean monos, they will almost always make clamps. If they don't, something else is wrong.

Can you do a video or touch on about setting up to work
Yes. I plan on doing some videos that are literally just me working, setting up, etc. in real-time with the camera running. I might even try to answer some questions while I do it. I think people really need to get an idea of the time frame and actual work instead of a 10 minute edited video that took place over several days or weeks.
Can you revive a culture from a dried mushroom? Maybe from spore though it may require a lot of plate work?
Yes. It sometimes works. Depends on the original drying temperature and the way it was handled. Use bleach, peroxide, and water to prepare the sample. There are a few ways to do it.
You could also just try getting spores from gill tissue. This has similar issues (age and temp), but might be a better approach.
I think the obvious question would be: what brand is the FFU, and where would someone get one?
I got mine in Thailand from a local supplier. I don't know how you would get one other places.
Just had my TAT x Enigma blob spores from you germinate! Really excited to see what f2 and f3 generations hold for me! I have a question that might be good, can you do a short video or segment on germinating stubborn spores and possibly methods to get it done. ive been struggling a lot lately with some galindoi spores that ive had for almost 3 years and cant seem to get germinated. I tried re-hydrating them using the pressurized syringe method, will be interesting to see if it works.
Keep up the awesome work! :)
Will be back for some more spores very soon :P
Your prep work that leads up to sitting in front of the FFU in aseptic environs. Takes me about 20minutes and not sure if I've missed any keys steps. Don't have to see underwear... but arm washing, gloves, mask?, wipedown-where and with what, how to get tools clean ready and in place, petri treatment so that labels aren't washed off but they are clean, on and on. Do you spray front of FFU? Wipe from FFU outwards? Keeping it clean while you work - what can you touch or should not touch (dirty) or when to spray gloves again - aseptic technique and things to keep in mind as you work so that you don't contaminate. Do you clean your phone in case it rings or alarms while you're working? If you reach outside the flow but only set things down, not touching any unclean surface, can you continue to work or should you spray... blah blah blah
I try to clean-up as best I can. I haven't had any issues yet. I plan on doing some videos later on my whole routine. Hopefully your questions can be answered then.
Nice setup Ed! What are your thoughts on home brew Laminar Flow hoods? Can they be efficient and do you recommend a certain method of making one?
I made one years ago. It ended-up costing me more in time and money than it was worth.
I would love to know more about your what maybe your agar recipe and process is. I don’t believe I’ve seen that yet from you! I love anything you do and we are friends on FB. Love keeping up with your progress
Thanks for the suggestion. Here is my recipe.
GRYA recipe
3% Glutinous Rice/Whole wheat flour
2% Agar
0.1% Baker's or Nutritional Yeast
Food Coloring (if desired)
FOR 500 ml Total volume
15 g Glutinous Rice/Whole wheat flour
10 g Agar
0.5 g Baker's Yeast
Food Coloring or 1g charcoal if desired.
500 ml tap water
- Should make between 20-25 standard size plates.
😮
hope all is well. haven't seen anything new in a while.
I will be getting back on it soon. Lots of changes in my life recently.
What is the purpose of that red tape around the FFU?
To avoid Bernoulli/Venturi/eddy currents from under the filter housing.
Hey Ed could you go thru spore germination on agar, then where to take transfers from, good or bad things to lookout for on that plate ect. I have multiple mss I need to progress with. I'm stuck on using and buying L.C. Newb here 😂 😮
I've got quite a bit of material on agar stuff. It's just scattered throughout the videos.
How this laminar flowhood works ? Where is the fan?
This is an FFU (Fan Filter Unit). The fan is directly behind the filter.
Does LC work as long term storage the same way as you demonstrate with the water technique? And why would it not? I think I have some ideas with that. What is your take?
Yes. I have pulled viable culture from 2 year-old LC that hasn't been agitated or moved. I use LC as a sort of back-up of a back-up for cultures. Or you can just make syringes and store them in the fridge. These might last for years.
Recently rather than mould, I seem to have consistent issues with bacteria (using flowhood, sterilising in an autoclave for 3hrs)... I get some jars looking partially 'ice creamy', often with a bit of an odd smell - still produce fruits but just annoying that it keeps happening.
Any suggestions?
Check the cultures on agar. Do they have a halo near the growing edge?
Keep one jar of grain uninoculated to see if it goes bad.
Try not to overwater/mist.
Squeeze your substrate to Field Capacity.
Hi Ed, I'll come over 2 Thailand 4 a month & was wondering if I could visit U? Thanks
Yes. Thailand is a big country. It isn't as easy to meet people as it seems.
I called it 25yrs my home. Know u live a bit in the sticks@@edwardgrand
Ed wishing you all the best sweet setup. Envy is one of the 7 deadly sins and I trade my left pinky for that FFU lol . Can't wait for another live stream with you and DK take care
Was the laminar flow hood you were using in a different place?
yes
I have a question for you have u ever seen the cheap over head flow hoods on eBay will they work? It's a 2 foot by 2 foot
I live in Asia. Products are different here.
Do you recommend not using exacto knives or blades ? Are scapel blades more efficient? And sterile i imagine?
#7 scalpel handle and #11 blades. That is the only thing I will ever use again. The handle is slim and long keeping your hands away from the work. The #11 blades are thin and sharp, making it easy to work with. I have tried a lot of alternatives. None of them work as well as this combination for me.
Hey what’s up Edward, I was watching your video on discord and you were saying how you made your grain spawn and I couldn’t hear what the name of it was! It was to loud in it video! You said it was used in dog food and you get a 10 kilo bag for like 4$ can you please give me the name again? Thanks man love the videos!
Paddy rice. It is the actual rice they use for planting with the husk/hull still attached. Cheap AF here. They use old 'human' rice for dog food because it's basically cheap and tastes not so good after a year of storage.
@@edwardgrand so when I go to type it in google to find it what do I type in
does it come with a view?
There will be some views of the inside of my house. Luckily, no one ever comes here :)
How big is your FFU?
60 cm x 120 cm
Congratulations on the new flowhood! When I started using my first flowhood - I loved the freedom of movement (and of course the much much lower contamination rate. Important to note that good sterile technique is still important in front of a flowhood!
Here is a question for you (and probably relevant given the location of your hood), what is the best way to protect the HEPA filter from airborne contaminants while not in use? Also - how frequently (as a function of bourse of flowhood use) do you change your intake filter?
Happy expat Thanksgiving!
I’m grateful for you and your teaching / sharing your mycological journey!
Thanks for the wishes.
I have a thick piece of plastic that I use to cover it when not in use.
I don't have a intake/prefilter now. I need to get one.
@@edwardgrand pre filter is a very good idea for extending the life of your main filter … but you already know that, I suspect. My pre filter gets a pretty good layer of cat hair and lint on it and seeing it there makes me feel better about where I can’t see 🤪
I keep getting unsubscribed
It's not me :)
@@edwardgrand I understand just letting you know. Can make a video showing it.
Hey Ed, hope you have luck and success in your new endeavours. Clean and mean!
Beautiful set up Sir! Looking forward to mucho contento 😂. 🍄❤️
Late to the Dr. Ed party but psyched to be here. Love what I've been binge watching and thanks for sharing like you do. Best of luck in 2024!
I want to see you grab that unused guitar and play some Cannibal Corpse in front of the FFU. 😆🤘 Can't wait to see your LC's in the future.
All the very best Dr Ed, with your new adventures, certain it'll be a success
I just got one also Ed yesterday!! Can’t wait to use it!! So pumped!!
Is that carpet I'm seeing in the background? Omg
It is a curtain. Landlord wouldn't be happy with me removing it. ;)
man, i have a question, i just thought that i could keep my culture on grain and have a master jar and only do g2g, so that would mean no lc bullshit anymore so i was wondering why people dont do that, how long could i keep doing it with a single culture in a single jar, if i put it in a new jar would it keep on living infinitly blah blah blah, anyway just asking for a video about cloning/keeping a culture via G2G transfer, thaks man your the best frl
I don't like doing G2G. It is kind of dirty, and the spawn will eventually stop performing well. I stick close to my spores and original cultures. I usually only run a new cultigen once or twice, so it's pointless for me to do G2G. In theory, you are 100% right. I'm not sure why people don't do it?
Dr. Ed your willingness to spread your knowledge is an amazing thing! I know it for sure has made me a better mycologist.
Have you considered trying to make a video tek for psilocybe semilanceata? I think it would catch a lot of traction similar to what Gordo did with pan cyans
Thank you. I'm glad my little things helped you.
I will never be getting into P. semi. They are a low-yielding outdoors species that would be very difficult for me to grow indoors here in Thailand. I have my hands full with the cubes. Probably enough work for about 10 lifetimes sitting in my front room. Almost overwhelming at times. I'll leave the semi for someone else.
What is it that you are using the a liner in your tubs? Are they breathable?
Very cheap, thin polyethylene garbage bags.
Nice setup
How much was the hood Ed good to see you back
I got it for about $300, but I live in Asia where they are made.
Ooh what's up I got a question what's the disadvantages of lamar flow hoods that arnt horizontal? Will vertical flow hoods still work?
They both work fine. I have used both and many models and it is all personal preference. I like the horizontal (like the one in video). The name refers to the flow of air. Confused me for a while.
@@edwardgrand thank you so much I've been looking at building a 24x24 flowhood but the amount of space a homebuilt one takes up is almost double from a commercial hood so I was wondering if I could just rotate it and use it that way since it won't fit in my closet horizontaly😂
@@Deltaforce650I have seen people do that. The only issue would be the fan and if it can handle the different orientation. The FFUs are meant to be in the ceiling, but the fans don't seem to mind being vertical.
Loving the new setup Ed, nice FFU! Thank you so much for all you do for us myco addicts lol
Glad to see ya again buddy. The FFU is sexy brother... can't wait to see a bunch of fun crosses happen there🎉🎉
Happy and excited for you!!
… you back!
All the cool kids have a short & sweet intro video with original music. just ideas, right?
I guess I'll never be a cool kid unless someone wants to donate a death metal guitar riff :(
It will be done.
