Thank you very much for this video explanation! I’m new to smoking a pipe, and no joke, I was sitting on my back porch this morning (while smoking) and thinking “what’s the difference between topping and casing?”, and then 5 hours later your video pops up!?! Thank you!
Love your videos!!-I have been flavoring my tobaccos for years using a steaming/simmering slurry method. I use real flavors and extracts. These tobaccos are the most delicious tobaccos I have ever tasted
I always wondered what the difference was. I love your blends and I am very grateful to get a peak behind the curtain of C&D's blending wizardry. Thank you for your time, Jeremy! Please keep making these videos!
Thanks for the information. I have been smoking pipes since 1967. Pipe smoking for me has changed considerably since my start. Now, thanks to you, I better understand the different steps in making the different steps. C&D makes several blends that I really enjoy.
This was a very educational video for me. I had no idea what the difference was between a casing and a topping. It really explained a great deal and was worded that I think everyone should be able to understand. Great job brother!
Was great to get a breakdown on the difference between the 3 and how they actually come together was very good information that I haven’t seen in a video yet and what better person to present it then a master blender thanks brother keep em lit
I've opened myself up to more of these types of blending techniques I began With English types And I've stayed away from Burley till now . My palette is truly developing. your helping me with this kind of information please do more
Thanks for watching the videos! Glad to hear that you are finding them helpful to you. Have you tried Old Joe Krantz Red Label? Great Burley style blend with Latakia, and one that might be a good one for you to try.
I just found your video - this is very helpful...samples of uncased vs cased tobaccos to try. Pipe smoking is such a nice hobby...the pipes, the reflection and quiet time smoking them and the tobacco exploration that goes along with it. I appreciate you being a navigator through it all.
Jeremy, As always good to see you. I can’t thank you enough for the education that you are so willing to share with us. I have to say derringer is one of my favorites. I definitely have to try the Virginia Flake. Thanks again for sharing. Blessings from Gettysburg Pa
Thanks for watching! I am happy to be of service. Derringer is one of my favorites as well, and the bulk Virginia Flake, while good on it's own is even better used as a blending component. We use it in Haunted Bookshop, where it offers a slow burning, sweet backdrop for the Burley and Perique to play out on.
Jeremy Reeves Hmmm that’s very interesting. I definitely enjoy C&D Blends. Some of my favorites for sure. Thanks for everything you do. Blessings from Gettysburg Pa
Great video man! I have smoked a pipe on and off most of my adult life. This past year I started growing my own N.rustica and I'd LOVE to turn that into some sort of aromatic. I'm particularly fond of Cherry Cavendish.
Great video Jeremy! The myth is now debunked. I would have never noticed the sugar in the Derringer!! One of my go to blends. Derringer is definitely a very underrated blend!! Also great job with pegasus!! Love it!
Anyone else imagine those were not JR’s arms at the start of the video? Ha ha!😆 Thanks for the great info especially the blend comparison. Always wish more tobacco reviews included detailed comparisons to specific similar blends. I could narrow in on blends easier with less money. (TAD issues!) Tobacco reviewers: You are a great help to our community. Please include things like, ‘This is spicier then Bayou... or This Virginia is about as sweet as Opening Night...! C&D really make great blends, I have a lot of them.
Hi Jeremy! This is your long lost relative in San Diego.....Matt Reeves! Anytime you would like to send yore pore ole cuzzin a sample pack, let me know! Hahaha! Just kidding Jeremy! Very good video! I love me some aromatics!! I have wondered what the difference is!! Very cool! Think I'm a topping kind of guy! Haha!
I am a newcomer to the pipe smoking world, I am an old cigar smoker, and it was not in my mind to smoke a pipe. I tried two Cornell & Diehl mixtures and I liked very much the first Wintertime Reserve "Vixen" and the second was a Bow-Legged Bear
So glad for more Jeremy Reeves videos! So informative and passionate. I really feel that there is this aromatic vs non aromatic divide in pipe smoking. I love both for different reasons. Should be aromatic and non aromatic: more variety!
I always wondered! Now I know, thank you! I prefer so far aromatics but I‘ only about 2 years in and smoke about 3-4 x a week as a “treat“. So I like sweetness and generally go for both cased and topped blends. I have tried some uncased virginias and burleys and a few EBs but so far find them more reserved in taste but I will keep experimenting. 😊
I started pipe smoking about a month ago and have smoked three times so far. I'm a bit overwhelmed and probably doing it wrong. I've never smoked before and appreciate the C&D education so much that I will make there's my test company. You have to narrow somehow. I would love a list of ~ five tobaccos that will find me my flavor preference. All opinions (and y'all are an opinionated lot) are welcome
This is great info, thank you for explaining! I’m not the biggest fan of aromatics, but do really enjoy a few of your offerings as well as a few sutliff aro’s. I thoroughly enjoyed cased tobacco blends however. Interlude is s lightly kissed with that sweet honey, I just keep reaching for more. It ages wonderfully too! I can go on and on about your blends. I have easily over 50 C&D tins jarred and in my rotation and seriously enjoy each and every one of them. I absolutely love pirate cake, star of the east flake, from beyond is amazing. Love Latakia but also burley. Your eight state burley is delicious.
I'd love to see a video on the making of the cut. I have heard the term "pressed into cake and then spun into ribbons" I have held a large plug and spun around, I even taped it to a fan and it never turned into a ribbon. I'd love to see how that magic happens.
... New pipe smoker… so it seems like what I'm hearing from you and what I've read that all tobacco's whether aromatic or not aromatic have a flavoring… whether it's casing or a topping, ...a flavor is added… That means to me at this point ...all pipe tobacco's with the exception of unflavored, untopped, uncased tobaccos... Have a flavoring added even though they are called non-aromatic… Am I correct? ...Thank you, very helpful... God is Good...🇺🇸
Yet another great video!! I will have to try out some of those blends that you listed. Thanks for clearing that topic up too! I thought that was the “case” ( no pun intended) 😁But was always confused when people used them interchangeably. So always wondered what the true difference was.
Hello! What kind of flavoring liquid can i use to make some aromatic tobacco? Simple food flavorings that are used for cake making? Or there are some special tobacco flavoring liquids that we normal users can't just simply buy?
Are all pipe tobacco blends cased? And does that help to prevent tobacco beetles? I am new to pipe smoking and I see wildly things online concerning Beatles in pipe tobacco. Is that something that is only a concern with cigars?
In your images you are shown pouring the flavoring into the cut tobacco. Why are you not using a mister or hand sprayer to distribute the flavoring more evenly across the entire surface of the bin?
Thank you Jeremy for this great informative video. May I ask you a general question, what can I do to fix a very bitter tasting tobacco? Will casing with sugar or honey fix it?
Would "cellaring" have any negative impact in the smokability of my favorite cased or topped tobaccos from Cornell/Diehl in the long term? Let's say I don't pop open a tin for 10, 15, 20 years. Would those added ingredients spoil or rot or otherwise foul the tobacco given long-term storage? The common thought seems to be that un-cased/un-topped Virginia, for example, gets naturally sweeter when it's cellared for years on end. Just wondering if the masterfully blended C&D topped/cases tobacco would still be enjoyable after such a long time. Thank you for the video!
Thanks for the video. I’m a home blender amateur (very amateur!). Wouldn’t mind messing around with casing. Are the flavors water based or alcohol? What’s a typical recipe for those? (I realize you can’t give away the C&D special sauce!)
I have always been under the impression that autumn evening is cased as the flavoring is cooked into the tobacco while its hot, any clarification on that or has the recipe changed? Plus is burly flake 2&5 are similar component minus the topping, that would be interesting to know as i stayed away from number 5 thinking its milder in strength/nicotine. Interested to hear your feedback. As always, thank you for the videos and the efforts taken in making them. Kindest regards Al janabi
Very informative! I've read tobacco reviews where the reviewer complained that the blend was so "heavily cased" that it stuck to his fingers. From Jeremy's description, it sounds like casing shouldn't do that. Perhaps it's the propylene glycol added to aromatics to keep the volatile toppings from evaporating off too quickly? Is propylene glycol considered a casing, a topping, or neither?
It's a casing, as its primary use is an attempt to keep moisture in the tobacco in a pouch over a long period of time. However, it's also used to carry flavoring for aromatics, which is its most common use.
Would be nice if the uncased or untopped information was on the label. I’m a big fan with lots of tins on hand including both #2 and #5 Burley Cake. I do my best to write honest reviews on almost everything I smoke
Where would ageing fall in next to proximity to other things? I keep my tobacco in a location where coffee beans and chocolate and spices tend infuse themselves around them. Is there a name for this?
Can you remove the topping from tobacco? I bought some blending tobacco but it has a topping on it, it's even sticky. I bought it for ryo, so it's worthless to me with a topping.
I recall a few years ago seeing a video made for a Christmas blend whose name escapes me. Anyways, that process showed you boiling a bag of spices that was then added to the blend for the "Christmas" flavoring. I'm thinking that would be part of the process for a topping in a blend, correct?
More! Tell us more! About everything!
Thank you very much for this video explanation! I’m new to smoking a pipe, and no joke, I was sitting on my back porch this morning (while smoking) and thinking “what’s the difference between topping and casing?”, and then 5 hours later your video pops up!?! Thank you!
Your videos, knowledge, delivery and way of explaining are amazing. I have really enjoyed watching all of them! Thank you sir and thank you C&D!
Sheds light on the subject. The last part where you show blends is pretty neat. I thank you for it all.
Such a great video! You’re a world class blender and such a natural, effective educator. I always look forward to your videos and learn so much!
I agree
Very kind of you to say. Thank you. I am glad to be of service!
I can't get enough of these videos and your great tobaccos, keep up the good work!

Thanks! Very helpful. I read about this some 50 years ago, but had forgotten. Thanks for the reminder!
Thanks for the information. I have been smoking pipes since 1967. Pipe smoking for me has changed considerably since my start. Now, thanks to you, I better understand the different steps in making the different steps. C&D makes several blends that I really enjoy.
Great to hear, enjoy the journey
Super cool. The art and science behind this is infinitely interesting
My goodness, I just wanna taste the tobaccos from all these tins!
Excellent piper's video! Thank you for the great class! Peaks my smoking interest! Keep up the sweet blends, and enjoy your smoky weekend - Eric
Thank you for sharing this! The term “You learn something new everyday!” holds true! Because I learned something new today... Again thank you...
Thank you, this made it all clear now!
I’m a new pipe smoker. I’ve started with autumn evening in a cob. Perfect night cap!
Thanks for the information!
This was a very educational video for me. I had no idea what the difference was between a casing and a topping. It really explained a great deal and was worded that I think everyone should be able to understand. Great job brother!
Most elucidating! Even my second time around watching this video 😄😉😊👏👏👏👏👏👏😊
Was great to get a breakdown on the difference between the 3 and how they actually come together was very good information that I haven’t seen in a video yet and what better person to present it then a master blender thanks brother keep em lit

Excellent video. Thanks so much for the valuable info and a look behind the curtain.
Glad it was helpful!
Great video. Perfect explanation of a confusing subject.
Another great video!!!! Can't wait for more

Very interesting! A topic that has never been explained in this way! Thanks for sharing!
Great video thank you sir, my wife and I just started our YTPC channel, its allot of fun, hope you had a great Christmas.

This is very helpful for me when trying future tobacco. And it helps me with explaining it to my brother and friends. Thank you for this video.

Thank you for a great little education! Keep up the good work.
I learned something today, Thank You. Very informative, keep up the good work!
Great video Jeremy! The myth is now debunked. I would have never noticed the sugar in the Derringer!! One of my go to blends. Derringer is definitely a very underrated blend!! Also great job with pegasus!! Love it!
Glad to hear that Derringer and Pegasus are such hits for you! They definitely a couple of my go to blends as well.
This is so helpful, interesting, and clearly presented. Thanks!
thanks for clearing that up. i understand the process but tend to forget which word means what.

Thanks for the video. Well done, Mr. Reeves.
Great video and explanations
Useful information, thank you!
Opening Night is one of my favorites. I'm smoking Derringer right now, similar, but sweeter with the sugar, both are great.
So glad for more Jeremy Reeves videos! So informative and passionate. I really feel that there is this aromatic vs non aromatic divide in pipe smoking. I love both for different reasons. Should be aromatic and non aromatic: more variety!
Really enjoying these informative vids keep them coming, please.

Ive got that same shirt. Just getting into pipe smoking, and learning a lot. Would like to blend my own at some point.
Jeremy, thanks for the very informative video
Thanks for the info i did not know that!

Fantastic Video
Thank you for the excellent explanation and examples. Well done, and appreciated.
AWESOME information! I LOVE knowing more about what goes into what I’m smoking:) Thanks Ya’ll!
Great bit of education, thanks
Brilliant, I've always wondered about the difference. Thank you for this video.
Great video, Jeremy!
Great video. Very informative. Epic beard 👍
Great video, I learned something, love your blends.

Very informative! Thanks for clearing up the terms.

Very well explained!
Awesome topic!
Thanks for the lesson
This is very helpful: thanks.
Super helpful and I definitely want to do the suggested comparisons. I'd be interested to know what you'd consider Erinmore Flake to be?

God is Good...🇺🇸
Virginia Flake is bar none my favorite C&D Flake. I can chooch on it all day long and not get tired of it.

Very informative . what about the adding of glycol to tobacco? what is it and how does it help or hurt a tobacco flavor?
Thank you very much that cleared p my confusion
Great video as usual Jeremy. Very informative. I prefer also C&D Berrys and Cream. Very nice blend indeed..
In your images you are shown pouring the flavoring into the cut tobacco. Why are you not using a mister or hand sprayer to distribute the flavoring more evenly across the entire surface of the bin?
have you thought about using turpines? its all the rage in the cannabis community as a flavor additive and they cover a wide spectrum in flavors!
Thank you Jeremy for this great informative video. May I ask you a general question, what can I do to fix a very bitter tasting tobacco? Will casing with sugar or honey fix it?
Sweet stuff thx

toppings are used on liquid basis or are thyey used in a kind of extract i.e oil?
Technical question for experts. First of all, does the temperature affect the speed of fermentation? Thank you
Cassing have to use with alcohol sir? Or only with sugar

Andy Olcott Golden Days of Yore. Great video.
That picture of you with that beard net 🤣🤣🤣 Most of your beard was pouring out of it.
