Tobacco Selections: Bright and Red Virginia

  • A lot of people ask about the different grades of leaf we use to create our pipe tobacco blends. Truth is, there aren't that many of them. In the case of Virginias, for example, we use only one bright grade and three red grades in nearly all our blends. Tune in as Jeremy Reeves talks a little more about these grades, explains the differences between them, and offers an inside look into our selection process.

    Another great addition to the informational line up, thank you for taking the time and effort to make them. It is sad how the pipe smoking industry lack in that regard while the cigar industry is filled with documentaries and interviews with leading blenders and manufacturers and for that i am pretty sure every pipe smoker is thankful for your videos. Virginia is certainly a tricky leaf, your autumn evening red virginia has strength to it that some heavy burly blends do not provide. Best regards
    Al janabi

    After blending tobacco for 40 years I have found nothing ages and improves in tobacco better than red Virginia.
    I have some blends nearing 35 years old now and the complexity and flavor is out of the world and you cannot get
    without at least a twenty years ageing. What works best is temperature extremes of sitting in wood barrels and tightly
    packed through hot North Carolina Summers to cold hard Winters. The main thing is to keep the humidity constant once you seal
    which I do using layers of burlap bags and plastic bags before going into the barrels. After many years of ageing and looking at it in bright
    light you will see the sugar crystals and the tobacco turns a dark hard red with no brown remaining. Nothing is better in a pipe bowl.

      Chris about how you layer everything in the barrel. Tobacco, plastic, burlap, plastic, tobacco, etc...

    • @joycekoch5746
      @joycekoch5746 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@MrHihowryou I like to press the tobacco down as tightly in the burlap bags and then put them in wood barrel and then seal the outside with layers of plastic bags to control the humidity inside.

    I love seeing the process of how C&D's products get into my pipe. I think Sansepolcro is my favorite C&D blend that contains reds. Probably my favorite red blend from any producer that I have tried. If anyone knows of another blend that may be similar from C&D I would love a suggestion. I have only been enjoying my pipes regularly for about a year now.

    I've yet to find any bright Virginia with as light a color tone as @ 4:06. No matter what picture they show, it's always closer to red Virginia's color. I'm guessing bright is more expensive so they all cut their supposedly bright VA only blends with Burely and Reds.
