    You can pick up the RD-9 and the RD-8 for affordable money and not be afraid to take them out. If something happens... you can get another. Are they perfect replicas? Nope, but they close enough to be useful and cost 1/10 the price. Like Behringer or not, they are bringing affordable products to the market that fill a need.

    Sold my 808 and bought a 909 late 80s (had to sell to buy something else) and when I listen to my recordings of those days I still wonder why people like this sound so much. I remember regretting I sold the 808 and replaced it with a 909. They're worlds apart and the 909 sound was never my thing.

    • @StarskyCarr
      @StarskyCarr  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have to admit.. I think I edited a bit out saying something similar. You get the 808 out, plug it in and everything instantly sounds amazing. The 909 sounds don't blow you away in comparison, they don't instantly grab you like the 808. It's only once I start adding instruments and grooves with this that I really feel it. Hence I think part of why I enjoyed adding the bits ad bobs in here. I have to say I really like this though :)

    Greetings Starsky.
    The extra decay on the TR-09 is the same sound as the original 909 revision 2 model. I'm pretty sure that is what Roland emulated their TR-09 on. I have done a 'does it work in the mix comparison video between an original 909 and the TR-09. The TR-09 does an excellent job compared to the original. It's not 100%, more like 90% but in the mix, it can definitely work. However, the clone that is a 100% copy of an original 909 is the Nava. That thing is bang on.
    I'll pick up the Behringer Hi-Fi model eventually.

  • @RaquelFoster
    @RaquelFoster ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I love this thing. But the lights drive me crazy because I'm very colorblind and I can't tell the colors apart on the dim little lights AT ALL, which means that I can't even tell if a step is triggering unless I wait for the pattern to come back around and see if it plays (if the step light is on for some other reason). But I still like it.
    It's convenient that the 606/707 are the ones that are easy to program and perform with because they're the cheap ones. And now we have an 808/909 that are easy to use, too! This made me gain a lot of respect for Behringer. I dunno about the RD-8, though. It's just not right without an instrument select knob. The missing knob really stands out the instant you see it. But I don't hate the missing knob as much as I hate the USB Micro-B power connector on the TR-08...

      It’s a pain tbh… and seems to change as tracks become more/less complex. You’ll be aware of the MIdI synchronisation page in Logic and that you can set delay times for each instrument. It’s literally a case of attempting to balance everything. It’s a pet hate of mine for LPX as it can be hugely frustrating especially when you have a vocalist come in at the end and everything they sing is recorded out of time. So if the pattern alternates it's accents (including global), the volume of the 'Repeat' roll changes as it plays over the top of the pattern's accent changes. Is that normal behaviour? Great review. Thank you for this. But the main reason why I didn't buy an RD-8 or will not buy an RD-9 is the convoluted way of the user interface on both of these machines. Give me the simplicity of the old TR-808-909 any day over this.

    Happy to lend you my original 909 for a direct 1:1 comparison but, it’s a v1 firmware with none of the revision mods. So, midi timing will be crap and you’ll need a MIDI-DIN Sync converter. I have one if you need that too.

    Personal opinion purely based on my own sound tastes/what sounds better to my ears: TR-09 has the slightly better kick, snares are different but I like them both equally, RD-9 wins for the other sounds. Wish I wasn't so limited on studio space because my heart wants the RD-9, but the TR-09 might be a bit easier to fit into my setup.

ALSO THE BIGGIE!.. we mostly run our analog gear now into a computer to turn it completely digital. essentially all my analog gear is literally a digital recreation im listening to anyway once its gone through the ADC and DAC. it just becomes a digital emulation anyway 99% of the time when we listen anyway. all the tr909 vids on youtube are literally digital

Apparently they all had their own particular tone as you'd expect after living different lives for 40 years. For me it undoubtedly gets that 909 character.
