Katatonia is amazing... I absolutely love The Great Cold Distance album. You should react to a song called Follower. And well then their Brave Murder Day is a legendary death/doom album that has influenced so many other bands. It has harsh vocals from Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth...
One of my all time favourite bands... Love them to bits and beyond... No other band creates atmosphere like this. I'm against religion as a concept but I could make an exception for Katatonia... yeah, Katatonia should be a religion... Thanks for the video guys! \m/
Great reaction! I agree that his voice is haunting. I think that the best Katatonia did was abandoned the classical, old-fashioned death doom style and make THIS music. It's unique and beautifully haunting and gloomy.
i had to come here after the My Twin reaction. Love this song...these guys capture all the greatest elements of Progressive music without taking 12 minutes to do so. The subtle lead layers, wide stereo vocal harmonies, piano background..there's so much nuance going on, but as a whole the song is a journey. Love it.
Katatonia has been one of my favorite bands for a good 9 years now. I own 4 of their albums, and 2 of their DVD's. Believe me, this song is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to their talent and melancholy.
They started out as a more of a black/death doom band with a little bit of that 80's darkwave like Fields Of The Nephilim and Sisters Of Mercy. They were heavily influenced by early Paradise Lost. They would evolve into more of a gothic rock band for a short while. Then into more progressive alternative rock/metal like Tool. And then less Tool influence during this period. And the more just progressive rock on latest album. They've changed a lot during every album pretty much. Jonas and Anders also play in Bloodbath. Other projects or bands they played in over the years include October Tide (Jonas, Fredrik, and Mattias), Diabolical Masquerade (Anders), Bewitched (Anders), Tiamat (Roger), Runemagick (Daniel M.), Lord Belial (Daniel M.), Siebenbürgen (Niklas),
Did see them live yesterday in the Netherlands at fortarock and I agree with you guys 100% Jonas Renske's voice is dark but absolutely lifts you up. Just was stunned by the music...
Hellyeaaaaaaaah katatonia one of my fav bands, they don't need review they need a full series season to review, the vocal, lyrics and music all are above 10/10. They make so fucking high. And yes you are totally right, jonas drives the track to wherever he wants with his voice
Katatonia is an amazing band, is the band that I listen to every single day on my car, this beautiful darkness this band has is mind blowing, their last album the fall of hearts, it is an album that you would love from beginning to end and won't stop playing it.
Katatonia is amazing, the dark atmosphere of the lyrics and sound is astounding. check In the White live in sanctitude, you will enjoy it even for a slower song. But there are much more amazing songs to explore.
Love the song and appreciate the reaction. The despondency in the vocals feels genuine. To me, this is a song about fear of commitment, abandonment, loss of potential and the bitterness that comes with it. Lethe is the river of sleep, so to be Lethean would be something put to rest in some way. "How long can winter colour your every word?" And I think doom metal is a good categorisation, even if this song is deeply prog rock influenced.
Katatonia - In the white (Sanctitude live) is one of the most haunting songs/performances I've seen edit: check out Sleeper from the same concert. bone marrow chilling Katatonia live vocals are like a hypnotic sorcery By the way, have you reacted to Opeth's softer songs like Windowpane, In my time of need, Hope leaves?

Love Katatonia! Had a neighbor who was related to two members of the band back in the day. Got some stuff signed :) And speaking of great music and unique vocals, check out Machinae Supremacy! Any song, really! And they tend to be chill about monetization so don't worry about that. They even released their live DVD on the pirate Bay and arranged a small festival in honor of the pirate bays 10th anniversary
Wow, it took you guys *20 months* to get to the first *Katatonia* song! I'm slightly upset about this state of things, as I've been a fan since 1993's *_Dance of December Souls_* - but this is from 2012's *_Dead End Kings_* and obviously their music has changed *a lot* since then, *but* their spirit has not! An *absolute* treasure of a band and _one of_ my favourite bands forever, *never* get bored listening to them or seeing them live! Jonas's voice is so *incredibly* full of emotion... Guys, if you react to the song _Teargas_ (2001), I may actually cry...
Katatonias first album is a totally different vibe jonas voice was more heavy but he since his vocal problem made him sing clearly i still say he sounds great
Katatonia! So underrated, so unknown....too bad, I love them to pieces. Thank you! And yes his voice! Sigh. Are you guys from New York? Trying to decide your accent....I'm from Norway :)
Even though Katatonia is a metal band, their slow tracks are amazing, you should react to Decima lyric video, absolutely beautiful song to react. Or the night subscriber for somethier heavier.
Thanks again! Been a while since I last listened and it was great to come back to Katatonia! In case you want check once again new finnish band check Kotiteollisuus: Raskaat veet. At least I cant remember you watching these before and the music video aint that bad either ;)
The moment I stopped caring about genres was seeing a magazine categorize Katatonia as "Suicide Metal". I get it, but the amount of subgenres is just impossible to keep track of. Katatonia is full of melancholy and while they have their own sound that I absolutely love, the closest other band I relate them to is Sentenced. Both just scream this nordic melancholy throughout their music. Hope people wake up to this amazing band more, because they totally deserve it just like their peers Opeth etc.
@@APREACTS Glad to hear it. Jonas is an interesting vocalist since he isn't really doing anything fancy in terms of technique, but it just fits the mood perfectly. I saw them live a few years ago and I don't think I ever saw his face because it was always covered by his black hair. Doom and gloom indeed :) Was a funny contrast on a sunny finnish summer day.

The singer of Katatonia ruined his voice by doing the wrong way when screaming so he had to take singing lessons and rebuild his voice since he had gotten knots on his vocal cords and that is why his singing voice sounds a bit more unique.
My theory was that the damage altered the chord/soft palate structure a bit which gave him that odd airy yet dark quality of sound. He also has a bit of lisp that adds to the hypnotic feel.
Katatonia is an amazing band. Listened to them for many years. They deserve more exposure than they get.
and the best acoustic concert i ever saw... union chapel, that CD i listen since years in my car...^^
Aaaaah Katatonia. Jonas is the greatest vocalist in my opinion. He could sing a shopping list and make it sound deep and meaningful.
He could! :D
😁 so true 🤘
HAHAHAHAHA wow
"You and me went to the grocery, and all the shelves are empty, was it all for nothing..."
Jonas Renske writes beautiful dark poetry in this band. He also is the bassist for Bloodbath. But he shines as the singer of Katatonia.

I would also add that the drummer doesn't get enough attention. The beats that guy lays down are insane.
Great reaction!
I agree that his voice is haunting. I think that the best Katatonia did was abandoned the classical, old-fashioned death doom style and make THIS music. It's unique and beautifully haunting and gloomy.
Awesome! Thanks you guys, my favorite reaction channel!

Katatonia's album "Discouraged ones" is one of the most criminally underrated albums ever..
Yes. It's my favorite katatonia album. No one ever talks about it.
One of my favourite bands! Happy to see a reaction vid.
it might be short and not that hard to play but for some reason thats one of my fav. Guitar Solos. It just fits so damn good
Katatonia has been one of my favorite bands for a good 9 years now. I own 4 of their albums, and 2 of their DVD's. Believe me, this song is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to their talent and melancholy.
I never get over Jonas voice. I almost cried seeing this song live. You should react to any track of Discouraged one’s album
one of my favorite bands not many people know of, its awesome you guys watched them!

This was a beautiful haunting song, thanks for sharing. Have a great day.
The melody of the song is as chilling as a deep blue night sky. Haunting but beautiful.
The kid feels it immediately. My reaction every time I hear it. 😁
Not just a patreon request. I've been asking for it for ages.
Sorry about that....well it is here now.....lets not dwell on the past.
God I love this song and I love this band. Thank you for listening and reacting to it. Hope you get to enjoy more of Katatonia \m/
I love this band so much. They have a ton of good songs. Dont forget about them!

I was introduced to them by Ayreon. Another band/project you should check out. It features many great vocalists from various genres.

Jonas is a misplaced sad finich guy lost in sweden, the sound of that is Katatonia! Millencollin metall.
Just got the new Aephanemer album, Prokopton. This album is gonna be in my top 5 by the end of the year!

Katatonia - July, live: last fair day gone ❤️
Time to react to Katatonia again, behind the blood live version from dead air.

BLOODBOUND - Rise Of The Dragon Empire (2019)
One of my favorite bands. Beautiful, dark, sad and very atmospheric. And like the words in the song... What took you so long? ;)
The moment I stopped caring about genres was seeing a magazine categorize Katatonia as "Suicide Metal". I get it, but the amount of subgenres is just impossible to keep track of. This track has opened both our eyes, we will be checking more from them. I love this sound, and those vocals are insane.

Yeah yes and no, more doomy with a hint of goth in it, +a slight progressive touch
Can agree with that. Their sound did evolve from say, brave murder day, til their modern sound. Night and day really. So progressive they sure are.
