1980 OMEGA Quartz Watch Not Working - Trying to FIX

  • Hi, in this video I attempt to repair my own Omega Seamaster quartz watch from 1980. I tried changing the battery and it still doesn't work. It will sometimes tick for a few minutes and then stop. I need to find out if it needs a service or if the quartz movement is faulty. Can it be fixed?
The movement inside this watch is a 1342. This was made by Omega and I don't think there is an ETA equivalent that can be used to swap it out. Parts can be very expensive compared to the value of the watch.
I love watches and I like to attempt to repair them, but the way I do it will often be incorrect. Remember that this is my own watch, it is not a £10,000 Rolex, it is not a rare timepiece that will be lost to the world if it breaks. The cost of having it serviced by Omega is more than the value of the watch itself. BUT even if I could get it fixed for £100, I would still want to attempt it myself because I love it. On the rare times when I am successful, the watch gives me more joy than a watch worth 10 times the price, and this is what it is all about :-)
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

Have a lot of respect for you with your skill at doing this. I have nowhere near the skill and motor skills to do this. I hope these sort of skills aren't lost in the future because watches like this in theory should never break permanently.

Wow! I belatedly came across your video today and was gobsmacked by your skill and dexterity. Attempting this myself would be a recipe for disaster! I have a 1981 Constellation Quartz Chronometer which has the 1333 caliber but is virtually identical in appearance. It was a gift from my late parents when I was 21, so it's the one watch I will always keep. Lacking your abilities (and patience), I've had it serviced twice by Omega in Switzerland and it still runs impeccably. After a succession of leather straps over the years, it's now on a Staib (Germany) milanaise mesh bracelet, which I think suits it very well. Thank you again!

Your watch repair skills are definitely improving a lot. I was given a god omega watch that doesn't work that is similar to this, but could never do this type of repair. Would love to see you repair more clockwork clocks. They don't have the tiny parts, so should be easier, but are often sold on auction websites not working.

  • @DuardoEh

Charming to hear the pleasure that you get as you tackle a 'refurb'.
My first GOOD watch was this same Omega Accuquartz that I bought circa 1975. It had stopped after a couple of months. Got it back from Omega service under warranty and it failed even sooner. What a disappointment. Still so disgusted with it when I found it again some ten years ago that I tossed it, hard. Into the trash. Worst watch ever IMO. No more Omegas for me. But having seen your brave repair, I regret not having the option of trying the repair myself, now that you have inspired me. Ultimately I could have sold it for the parts, virtually unused.
Your videos are so personable. Thank you.

Many Thanks for this instruction. I was given a gold Constellation by best friend shortly before he died in 1997. A jeweler told him it would cost $500 to replace the movement. I purchased #329 battery and adapter, but it didn't start.
So I put a tiny bit of oil on the two wheels and the watch came to life! Its been running well since. 😃 BTW, I listen to Chopin Nocturnes went working on pocket watches and French clocks.

My Bulova ladies dress watch just stopped working, and I only wear it a couple of timea a year. I put in a fresh battery and it still didn't work. This puzzled me because I hadn't dropped it or exposed it to water. I researched watch repair centers near me, diy watch movement replacement, etc. and decided it was not worthwhile to have it fixed since it only cost about $150. Still, I was annoyed, because, as I said, it just stayed in a drawer and I hardly ever wore it. As a last resort I decided to blow in some canned air. By mistake I sprayed some WD40-like liquid instead and quickly dried it up with a paper towel. Then I grabbed the canned air and gave it a couple of shots, especially under the movement towards where the hands are attached on the face. It worked! The watched is working normally now and keeping good time.

I was given a non-working 1980? Omega Constellation Chronograph quartz watch, by a friend of the family. He had quotes to the minimum of $600 to have it sent back to Switzerland and back. He couldn't justified the expense. So. I'm having a go to fix it. I'm no pro. The case back had 4 screws, which unscrew easily. Underneath the case back was a clear rubber/silicone gasket. Still in good condition. The movement is a Cal.1333 The first major issue was corrosion where the battery (Seiko SR1120W) sits. I've now stopped here, to find out the best way to clean up the corrosion in the battery compartment. One more thing. When I change the time, only the hour hand moves. Good vid, good presentation, even at 2am in the morning.

Fantastic work and great close up video Vince, well done. Although I haven't done anything with watches, I have seen many restoration videos and a couple of maybe useful tips are: 1 - Finger Cotts are cheap and let your hands breathe while you work on watches, etc. for a long time and 2 - a pair of brass tweezers prevents steel parts from being scratched as brass is softer than steel. Watch maker suppliers like Cousins sell them. Hope this is of some use. Thanks for another great video.

Update.Great vid on the strip down. Last week, a friend of the family gave me a non working Omega quartz with the cal.1113 movement. Took the back cover off, and found corrosion in the battery compartment, and rust nearby. I used white vinegar to soften the corrosion and the rust. You used Rotico. I used blu tac, to remove the gunk. I replace the battery. No go. I gently touched one of the gears, and it started to tick away. Replaced the back cover, and the ticking stopped. Hmmm. The battery was moving. The battery clamp wasn't holding the battery down. In come some folded aluminum foil and placed it on top of the battery and replace the back cover. Hey! It's ticking away. Left it for 24 hrs. Still ticking away. Now to adjust the time. The hour hand is sticky and not moving forward. With the crown pushed in, the hour hand is not moving with the minute hand. Pull the crown out, and the hour hand is moving along very nicely. But the watch does need a real service by a professional watch repairer.

Hey Vince! Great video as usual! A couple of pro tips to enhance your quartz servicing - the oil for the quartz train wheels should be moebius 9000/2 or 9014. If you use too thick an oil it will increase the power consumption of the movement and work less efficiently.
Great to see the Pegwood! One end sharpened to a point as you have done, the other shaped flat like a screwdriver will help you to hold in place bigger pieces and springs.
Because a quartz watch can be stopped working by so little, it's actually advised to use a clear acrylic rod instead of Pegwood as a tiny flake of wood from the Pegwood could stop the whole watch. You can pick up acrylic rods on ebay for only a few pounds, then just need to shape the end.
Overall great work though - many professional watch technicians wouldn't get involved in that movement, so you've done really well! 👍👍

That F-91W is current go to watch. I used the F-91 until they stopped making them and moved over to only the W model. It’s weird but that move by the company kind of pissed me off, lol.

Nice Job, Good practice to leave the snags until your skills and equipment improve as you cant undo rushed repairs.

GM1204 I suspect would be either initials of watchsmith or referring to "general maintainence" done dec 2004. See these movements aren't that far from the Soviet 3056A movement I am working on right now in my Raketa, the same configuration of a timing crystal, a clock chip, some form of a transister IC. I picked up another 60's Ruhla yesterday for silly money and two very rare Alba (Seiko) ana-digi's.

A watch well worth the effort. What might have been the cause of the problem? Just a cleaning?

Nice!

I was shocked at the price of Rodico actually. You said it was cheap, but it was much more expensive than I imagined for a little bar of clay/silly putty/play doh type stuff.

Hi, you worked on Omega 14xx series as shown in another video. Do you know if the two movements are interchangeable (ie. same dial feet positions and hand post diameter)?
