Trying to FIX the Cheapest OMEGA Watch on eBay

  • Hi, this video shows me attempting to repair the cheapest men's Omega watch that I found for sale on eBay. WARNING....If you fix watches for a living you WILL find this video painful to watch!!!!
    Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
    I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
    Many thanks, Vince.

    As a professional watchmaker I found this video hilarious. Especially since this is a very easy movement to service.

      @@leopineda6198 There are many things that could be wrong. The most common thing I see with this movement are A) the watch just needs proper cleaning and re-lubrication, B) the circuit has internal corrosion and needs to be replaced, C) the coil for the step motor has been damaged do to improper battery replacement.

    What this video shows is that the large number of watch professionals and advanced amateurs on TH-cam make watch maintenance and repair seem so easy that the viewer is left wanting to have a go themselves. They show the watches via microscopes and superb macro camera work, so you don't realise the incedibly tiny dimensions. They can do the work due to years of learning and hard earned experience. If there is a lesson here it is that watch repair is very hard and if you want to have a go then buy some old £1 watches from car boot sales to have a play with. To echo another commenter - this video really shows that Vince has some serious balls to let us all see this. Well done for trying Vince. We only learn by making mistakes.

    Ironically, while I was watching this, I was working on a gameboy I've been restoring for a while. When I originally replaced the plastic screen lens with a glass one, I used compressed air to blow out any dust so it wouldn't show up on the screen. Dust drives me nuts, but I should have just let it lay, as the compressed air sprayed out liquid and I ended up having to wipe down the screen with a cloth, leaving smears on the inside of the screen. It's subtle, and is only visible from certain angles, but I know if I were to go back in and wipe the smears out, I'd just end up getting dust back in there. Your video helped me to keep my OCD in check and just let it go, so thank you Vince!

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, nice example. I had a similar problem with a spec of dust on a glass screen protector on a Nintendo Switch. One tiny spec which most people wouldn't see ended up with me ruining the screen protector by trying to remove the spec. I should have left it but I knew I would keep focussing on it :-)

    I quite liked the wave thingy imho but maybe you could get some paint and colour match it to the exact colour and gently weave it into the existing dial finish? Think the looniest thing I did ever was when me clippers broke and I have had no hair since 1976 so desperate for a Picard job I put a load of Immac/Veet on me head and had to go to casualty because it had burnt me scalp horrendously, I actually put a carrier bag on me head before I would step outside into the ambulance and it was all blistered up and red raw for weeks after but lucky or rather unlucky it didn't damage the follicles so I still have to trim me hair.

    Rather than go straight to trying to fix the watch I would of carried out a strip clean and service in the correct order and then tested the watch after this. Mark has several videos on carrying out this procedure on quartz watches. I can't recommend watching his videos before carrying out the work.

BTW, the tatoo didn't looked that bad, it seemed some kind of limited serial painting, but I know the feeling of seeing something that doesn't belongs there hidding a fault, something revolves inside your guts and at the end you prefer the fault than the patch. Well, at the end you have a working watch and that's what matters :)

    Analog watches use the most power during the day /date change (11:30-1:30) cycle. Cycle (rotating) the hands a full 24 hour cycle BEFORE taking it out of the casing sometimes removes hair, lent or debris from the drivetrain. Scratches on the back casing along with the broken seal means someone else has been in it.

    Great vid!! I thought the watch looked great with the tattoo on it. That was almost as funny as the time you painted eyebrows on the two guys in the RC car!!

    It's crazy how small those gears are. I would've lost my patience about 5 minutes after fiddling with them. That tattoo hack job is, well, clever.

    Ironic that most of the time you try to remove water damage......and here you are applying it! LOL.
    Very commendable attempt at a repair, shame it turned out to be more of a 'replace'.....glass looks excellent though!

    You can change the mouvement against the original ETA mouvement in the worst case. But a few drops of oil generally would do the job.

    This watch is from Israel.
    It had a bus company logo (named "Dan", the logo is the hebrew word "דן", where the "I" attaches to a bus wheel) on it haha, this is so random.
    Probably a retirement gift to one of the drivers.
    Edit: Just saw you mentioned it at the start of the video haha...

    I know nothing about watches . But I've just been watching this on both my tv and my phone and on the tv it looked more like it may of been catching at the centre pin part of the hands. Didn't seem to have good clearance between the second and minute hand at that point. Also you're a brave man working on such delicate and tiny parts. The ideas of doing these are intimidating to me personally. Love watching you do them though. I have a cuckoo clock my father in law has requested I fix but terrified to start it as it's over 40 years old

    Nice video Vince,,, you could do a colour match of paint and get rid of that mark.... again would not be perfect but so very close.... watches are very hard to do, I have tried a couple and also failed :-) at least you got yours working again....

    Great video =D It's so very easy to break parts in watches! From a distance lol! Of about a mile!!! I've done plenty of things like that where I cannot leave it alone when its 99.9% perfect, then I make it far far worse to the point its f$$$ed lol. A good example was a PSP screen I cleaned up - it was pretty much perfect, but that wasn't good enough for me, so I polished it some more, and a little more, each time it got worse... Tip, don't use PlastX on PSP screens, it's one of the few things that actually get worse from using it!

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha, yes at a distance of a mile it might be OK :-) PSP screen must have been annoying because you are trying to make it better but you are putting time and work in to make it worse:-)

      Hehe =D Overall the watch came out well though! I was amazed to see the movement could be swapped entirely! That symbol kind of looked like something WW2 related to me, so I wasn't surprised you wanted to remove it lol.

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, originally I thought it looked like the rear wheel (tailwheel) on a plane. That is the good thing with the ETA movements, loads of spares and complete movements for sale. This one was very pricey, when I changed over my TAG watch years ago it was under £30 for the complete movement. Shows that maybe TAG watches might be overpriced :-)

    Perhaps that watch was a company gift to celebrate an employee being with the company for a number of years. I know some companies give their employees gifts like this after 10 year and 20 years and such and such.

    Hi Vince! ... actually I congratulate you for taking the risk of fixing an Omega watch ... it is not a cheap watch since it is a prestigious brand ... maybe you got it at a very good price and you have previous experiences ... I don't even touch it crazy ... hehehe! ... how good for you it's a great watch.
