Dal Lake, Kashmir

  • The Dal lake brings memories of vendors rowing day and night, selling fresh vegetables. The lake is famous for growing its own vegetables in its wet ecosystem. Most of the vegetables are grown on the lakeside and retrieved from the lake before being sold in just 2 hours and any vegetables left over are taken to street markets. Veggies, especially Monj/Kohlrabi, water-chestnuts and 'Nadru' or lotus stems from Dal are famous for their superior taste.
Floating vegetable vendors are a prime tourist attraction in the Kashmir Valley, but by nighttime, there is no hint of the market left in the lake. It truly has its own magic, nestled away in the lap of the glorious peaks of Himalayas, one can find a little bit of heaven there.
