  • This video will show you the teach-in process for the Twin Clutch SST transmission (aka Getrag DCT470) in the Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart and Evolution X MR. It assumes you have PassThru CAN installed and working - for help on that, see here: drive.google.com/drive/folder...

    For the purpose of doing a teach in on my 2012 Ralliart, in the DiagDB, XML folder, do I need to put both flpart files that are found in the Ralliart Files, 2009-2012 folder? Inside that folder there are 2 flpart files and unsure which one I need to copy acorss into the XML folder or if I just copy across both flpart files. The files I am referring to are 8631B002_dio30.flpart and 8631B002_dio301.flpart

    • @StephenStrangways
      @StephenStrangways  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Those .flpart files are only needed to flash new firmware. They are not needed for teach-in. Also, that dio301 file should NEVER be used to flash firmware, only the dio30 file. If you have the dio301 file you got it from an outdated link to an abandoned Google Drive folder. The current one is linked in the description of this video.

    Great video thanks for sharing the knowledge, i've recently had my transmission rebuilt and performed teach in procedure, all went well.
    Drove the car for 50km and then noticed stiffness in shifting while putting gear into reverse only.
    Drove it for another 150km & then preformed another teach in at 200km, results were fine. no issues.
    I'm concerned about the stiffness of reverse gear, I can feel the car jiggling a bit when i select reverse gear!! any idea whats going on?
    (No check engine light or any other warning signs.)

    • @StephenStrangways
      @StephenStrangways  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a physical connection between the transmission and the gear lever for selecting reverse and park - the problem may be with that. Even the transmission was reinstalled by a different shop than the one that rebuilt it, it's the installer you'll want to to have check their work. Hopefully all the work was done by someone who knows the SST well, not some random local transmission shop.

    Great video! Is it recommended to do that after each SST oil change?

    • @StephenStrangways
      @StephenStrangways  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's only specifically required after changing the clutch basket or valve body, but it does seem to help to do it once every few years. As most people change their SST fluid (don't forget to do the rear diff fluid at the same time, and the transfer case twice as frequently!) Once every two years, it just seems like an easy to way to remember to do it, if you do it with every fluid change.

    • @StephenStrangways

      It's worth a shot. If it's just a calibration issue, it would help. If the clutches are really worn, it won't help, but it won't hurt either, and you'll know you need to replace them.

      Is your Ralliart transmission working, and you just want to get S-Sport and Launch Control? If so, you can flash the firmware for the Evo transmission to the Ralliart transmission, and you will get those features. Instructions for doing that are in the PDF on the Google Drive link that is in the video description. I have a funny issue here: I've installed the PassThru on a laptop running Win 10 64b, without modifying the registry, and the program launched correctly (without cable attached). I've spent few clicks, everything worked fine, so I decided to modify the regisrtrys (both, 32 and 64) as instructed. I did so and the program doesn't launch anymore, it prompts me the message "C:\program files (x86)\passthrucan\system\common\ptcan.exe The specified path does not exist". The program and the folders are under "Program Files".
      Do you have any idea what did I do wrong? Should I modify the registrys back to original and let the program install under Program Files (x86)?

    • @StephenStrangways
      @StephenStrangways  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The best thing is to uninstall the program, delete any folders left over, then modify the registries so it will install to Program Files, and install it there. You need to modify the registries before installing, not after. If it installs to Program Files (x86) there are certain features that won't work properly.

    • @Tolstoiewsky
      @Tolstoiewsky 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is what I've done: uninstall from PF (x86), delete the folders, changed both registry, reinstall (to PF this time), try to launch, restarted computer, try to start again, uninstall, checked registry, reinstall and try to launch again. Failed! :(

    • @StephenStrangways
      @StephenStrangways  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Uninstall the program, delete any leftover folders on the hard drive and in the registry, and try this. It has been pre-packaged to work on newer computer for flash Evo transmission software on to Ralliarts, but you could use it to just do a teach-in, if it gets PassThru CAN running properly on your computer.

      I'm glad I'm able to help! You should not change the order of the steps. There are a few that can be swapped, but overall, certain things like clutch vent need to be done before certain other steps, and other things require the engine to be restarted afterwards, or else any steps after that won't work at all.

    Hey Stephen, i just picked up a project evo x mr 2008 with transmission issues, the car seems to shift slow. For example when i put it in drive and give it some gas it will take a few seconds before the car actually moves. It did have a huge exhaust leak in between the turbo and manifold which i am currently fixing. Also the car is a 2008 and when I crawled under it i noticed the transmission only has 2 drain holes so it is from a 2012+? Would you have any insight on if the exhaust leak could affect the transmission and if it being a different year could affect it?

    • @StephenStrangways
      @StephenStrangways  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If it was driven for a long time with an exhaust leak, some of the self-learning features of the ECU and TCU would have adjusted to it. After fixing it, they'll need time to re-learn, but a teach-in for the trans could indeed help. A bad tune could also cause shifting issues, and it's not unusual for cars to be tuned for aftermarket parts that the owner removes before selling the car, which can cause even bigger problems like overboosting and running lean. Different years of transmissions had either 2 or 3 drain holes, but it makes no practical difference.

      @@Gilligan.Garage the one thing people often miss that can cause a lot of problems is the boost controller. You really don't want an aftermarket 3-port EBCS with the stock tune. It's also a good idea to replace the relays if they haven't been done recently.

  • @lucasaugo4241
    @lucasaugo4241 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hei Stephen! I just performed a complete teach-in on my Evo X MR 2009.
    First thing, I flashed the ECU with a new version.
    I had 8631A379 (and S/W 0C) and i flashed 8631A827 (and S/W 0B) with 100% succes.
    After that i could finally access the PassThru CAN Teach-in.
    I did 1 -> 2 -> ignite off -> 7 -> 4 -> 5 -> 8.
    I had to retry some procedure more than once in order to have a Normal End, but i always got it.
    All without issues. I don't know if it was placebo but a lot of little strange noises went away.
    I didn't flashed back to old/previous ECU, was i wrong?
    I went for a run and the car suddenly showed a problem: the display turned yellow and i couldn't accelerate (it wouldn't rev). I stopped and restarted and it went perfectly for a while, but this scenario happened 3 times. After that i got home (15 mins run) without any problem.
    The oil i drained from the SST was different from the oil i refilled with (red oil drained, filled with Castrol Transmax Dual).
    Do you have any suggestion?

    • @StephenStrangways
      @StephenStrangways  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're fine to leave that newer transmission firmware version. The biggest problem is that automatic transmission fluid is usually red. If the car was running for a long time with that, it's likely clogged up the valve body, and possibly worn out some of its components. You'll likely need to get the valve body cleaned, possibly replaced. And get all of the old ATF completely flushed out of the rest of the transmission. You'll also want to inspect the clutches, as that fluid could mean the frictions have been burned.

    • @lucasaugo4241
      @lucasaugo4241 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@StephenStrangways TBH I saw that the Diaqueen is not red, but a light greenthe same color of the transmax dual that I used! Am I wrong?
      However I changed all the liquids before doing the teach in.
      My thought were that the remaining oil still had to mix up with the new oil I filled, but I don't know if it make sense. I will have to see how the car behave in the following run.
      Now I will evoscan to search some codes

    • @StephenStrangways
      @StephenStrangways  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lucasaugo4241 DiaQueen SSTF-1 and Castrol Transmax Dual are essentially the same fluid - Castrol makes SSTF-1 for Mitsubishi. They are both green. Automatic transmission fluid is usually, but not always, red. Some incompetent dealerships and independent garages will put automatic transmission fluid or CVT fluid in a car with an SST, and it does terrible things to the transmission.

    • @lucasaugo4241
      @lucasaugo4241 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@StephenStrangways oh ok, I misunderstood your previous answer then, and we both agree that the previous fluid was wrong!
      I hope the problem was that the fluids were still mixing up and so the valves were acting strange because of the different density and viscosity of the fluid. Maybe now it will be better but I plan to change again the SST oil in order to have the purest oil possible. All the other oils are changed so the car should be good.
      I just run an evoscan and I found: U0101 TC-SST ECU temporary CAN timeout; U0141 ETACS temporary CAN timeout; P1590 TCM to ECM communication error in torque reduction request.

      if you have 8631A8270B it shouldn't do the fifth gear check on startup. So if it's still doing the check, you could try updating to even newer firmware, such as 8631A9710A which you get by flashing 8631B151.cff
      If it's not doing the fifth gear check on your current or that firmware, and you are still getting noise on startup, it is most likely an indicator that you have a shift fork problem and you might soon lose your ability to use either your even or odd gears.

      As I said last time, due to the withdrawal of Mitsubishi, there is a lack of information in Korea.
      I would appreciate your kind attention.
      Finally, do you know the reason for the pending -> timeout error in teach-in?

    • @StephenStrangways
      @StephenStrangways  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you will need to place the .cff file, and the modified xml file, in the appropriate directories as per the flash-reflash guide. And only one set of xml and cuff files can be in the directories at one time.
      Tactrix or MUT-3 would both work.
      The timeout error is most likely due to the SST not being at the proper temperature, either too hot or too cold.

    • @StephenStrangways

      It can be perfectly normal to take a couple of tries to pass clutch vent, but if it won't pass after several tries, that is often a sign that the transmission was overfilled with too much fluid.

    • @StephenStrangways

      Dry fill if the transmission was disassembled and completely emptied is 7.6L.
      If the transmission was drained from the drain plugs while still in the car, the wet fill is 5.5L, or 6L if the cooler was also drained.
      If any aftermarket parts are installed, such as a larger cooler, pan, or a heated sump, add whatever extra fluid is needed for those parts.

I have an outlander that had the converter and mechatronic rebuilt, or swapped by the previous owner 1 year ago, and recently the car had been jumping out and back into gears randomly so I thought that this might solve the issue, but it has gotten a bit worse. before it only happened at certain rpm with higher loads, and when decelerating. now it happens in each gear when decelerating, regardless if I press the brake or not. I will soon change the oil and ext filter. do you think that would fix the issue? or perhaps the fact that I was not firmly pressing the brake pedal during the procedures can be causing this? thanks in advance for your answer.

    • @StephenStrangways

      If the brake pedal were not pressed at all, the teach-in would give an error and refuse to proceed. It's just a safety thing, to make sure if the trans accidentally engages that the car won't jump forward, and doesn't affect the effectiveness of the procedure.
      My first thought is that maybe the previous owner got a used mechatronic that is now starting to fail, or they got it rebuilt by an incompetent shop, as there far more shops that think they know what they're doing but actually don't then there are good ones.

      @StephenStrangways  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is normal for the transmission to upshift automatically, even in manual mode, when it is very cold. Once it reaches operating temperature, which can take 20 minutes in the summer and 40 minutes in the winter, it should not be doing it.
      If it is doing it while warm, a teach-in will not help with that. One possible cause is a bad tune, or the car was tuned with mods installed that the previous owner removed before trading the car in, so the tune doesn't match what it is on the car now, and it will need to be re-tuned.
      If it's not that, it could be that the transmission is heading towards failing, and a rebuild from a trusted shop is going to be $2500-6500, a replacement from a dealership $10000-13000, so if you have any sort of warranty from the dealership, you want to get this sorted before it expires.

The Cobb OTS maps are TERRIBLE for the Evo MR because they increase power without making any changes to the transmission tables to help the clutches hold the extra power, so it just shreds the clutches. @StephenStrangways  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The TSB was to update 2009-2010 cars, as later years already shipped with newer firmware. Three possibilities: 1) at some point the SST in your car was replaced with a used, older one with older firmware, 2) at some point someone had flashed Evo MR TCU software to get S-Sport, and they either used an old firmware version, or when they flashed it back to RA firmware they used an old version, or 3) the grind is not caused by the old firmware (that does a 5th gear engagement to see if the car is moving,) so it is something else entirely - a mechanical issue. Or just the wrong transmission fluid.

    • @StephenStrangways
      @StephenStrangways  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Regular fluid changes with DiaQueen is good. The Cobb AccessPort is terrible. It's one of the worst things you can do for your SST, because it doesn't support tuning the SST tables at all. The OTS maps are especially terrible. I would highly recommend logging the trans with a Tactrix cable and EvoScan, and getting a good tuner who knows the SST really, really well, to go over it and see what state it's in, and if it's okay, get it tuned (or e-tuned) in a way that won't destroy the SST. And I agree that no dealership will be able to help you. They don't know anything about the SST. The only official repair procedure on it is to simply replace it.

      Clutch vent usually fails for one of two reasons: you're not on level ground, or the transmission was overfilled with too much fluid. But because it worked once for you, it may be just one of those quirky weird things that can happen. You can safely proceed with all the other steps, skipping that one, and everything should work fine.

    If you flash a cff from an evo mr to get the ssport mode on a ralliart, would you then need to perform a teach-in? Or is the teach-in information stored elsewhere on the TCU?

    • @StephenStrangways
      @StephenStrangways  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      My experience has been that the teach-in information is stored and not affected by flashing different TCU software versions on. That being said, if you are updating from really old TCU software (diag version 0001), it will not have had all of the teach-in functions, so in that case, you'd definitely want to do another teach-in. There is no harm in doing another teach-in if you have any doubts.

      8270A can have the "transmission gear noise after cold engine start," while 8270B is the latest version for the 2010, and it avoids that problem. So, you should be all good to go. I'm not aware of any changes other than the cold start noise, so I would expect it to drive just the same.

    • @StephenStrangways

      The Mitsubishi Factory Service Manual just says it's "not used."
      Some shops believe it can cause problems, especially if the trans is cooler than maximum temperature for the teach-in, so they never touch it.
      Other shops use it for diagnostic purposes: if shift fork teach in fails, they'll do an interlock teach in, then back to shift fork, and it usually passes. If both fail, it indicates a mechanical problem with the transmission.

    • @StephenStrangways

      If a year or two has passed since the last teach-in, it would be a good idea to do a teach-in before a tune, and most importantly, drive the car for a while afterwards, at least a day or two, before the tune.
      When you perform the "reset clutch gain" function, it takes a while afterwards for the clutch gain to re-learn a good, lower setting during normal driving. If you don't give it time to re-learn during driving, it will have greater than normal clutch pressure, so if it's tuned like that just to the point where it doesn't slip, and the transmission later learns a lower clutch pressure, it could start to slip then.

      @@tyrellwilliams3814 well first of all, gluing the magnet back on the shift fork won't work for very long. It should have been replaced with a better shift fork, like the one from Dodson. So it sounds like you went to a shop that doesn't really know what they're doing. Second, the magnet must be very precisely placed, and its position does need to be calibrated with a MUT-III, which it sounds like they didn't do.
      To be honest with you, it's a rather difficult transmission to work with, so your average transmission shop can't do it properly, most transmission shops that specialize in dual-clutch transmissions can't do it properly, and even some shops who claim to specialize in the SST are liars and cheats and can't do it properly. There have been many cases of people taking their cars back to a shop half a dozen times over a year and never getting their SST running right, until they eventually get it to a shop that actually knows what they're doing. Interlock teach-in and line pressure test are described in the PassThru CAN manual as "available but not used." The factory service manual for the car does not mention them being used. Nobody has ever figured out what they do, or any reason to use them.
      Clutch ventilation twice may not be strictly necessary, but it sure doesn't hurt to do it twice. If something isn't right with the transmission it will fail right away, so you know something is wrong, whereas some of the later steps will just get stuck attempting to complete for a very long time, so clutch vent and plausibility check both work well as a test to make sure the transmission is ready for a teach-in.

But when you drain the transmission on the car, you only get 5.5 L out, or 6 L if you also drain the cooler, so that is how much you should put back in. 6.5 L at most, no more than that.

    Hi Stephen, I tried to do the teach-in on my 2012 ralliart but the car shut off and the engine light came on. Codes I got were U0100 P1870 P1871and P0725. The strange thing is without the software running and just plugging the USB connector into the computer would cause the engine to
    cut out. I erased the codes with my android app and the same thing would happen when trying to do the teach-in. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    • @StephenStrangways
      @StephenStrangways  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those codes all share one thing in common - CAN bus communications errors. Weirdness with your OBD-II port would fall under the same category.
      So, first of all, test your battery. Don't just check the voltage, but take it to a garage or auto parts store that can test it under load. If it's several years old and tests poorly, its time for a new one.
      If that doesn't solve it, check your CAN bus lines. It could be a short in a wire somewhere, or just a loose connector.
      The next official troubleshooting step after that, according to the Mitsubishi factory service manual, is replacing your ECU.

      Clutch vent failing is usually due to fluid being overfilled. The temperature being out of range can lead to it hanging on shift fork or stroke. It can also sometimes just take several tries to pass stroke, for no apparent reason. So, make sure you're at the proper temp, and just try it over and over until it works.

    • @StephenStrangways

      No, you don't need a tune to run S-Sport. If you get rev hunt it can usually be solved by flashing the 2013 Evo TCU firmware, even if you have an older RA, and if that doesn't work, then a good tune will fix it. And your car will perform better, too. Just be sure to go to a tuner who knows the SST really, really well. • @StephenStrangways
      @StephenStrangways  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      And was the car tuned with all of those parts installed? If not, there is your problem right there. If yes, if the MAF housing was changed and it wasn't tuned PROPERLY, with the MAF scaled by a competent tuner who understands airflow models, that's your problem. And even if it was tuned by someone competent, your BOV venting to atmosphere could be causing your problem.
      If you don't have tuner local to you, but you have a Tactrix cable and a laptop, you could get an e-tune from someone who understands the SST really well. There aren't many, and I would say that the best of the best is www.wtftuned.com

      @@rigo117x7 the temperature is super important - if the transmission is too hot or too cold, the steps of the teach-in will always fail, and it won't tell you exactly why it failed. • @Mannycreated
    @Mannycreated 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Okay what does transmission teach-in even mean?

    • @StephenStrangways
      @StephenStrangways  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a procedure for a dual-clutch automated manual transmission to run some tests: engaging and disengaging clutches, selecting and deselecting gears, and checking to see how much hydraulic pressure is needed to do those things, as it will change over time as clutches wear down, for example. The transmission then stores that data, and uses it every time it shifts in regular use.
      The teach-in process must be done any time that parts are replaced in the transmission - if you replace the clutch, it has to learn how thick the new clutch is, essentially.
      It's also a good thing to do from time-to-time, just to make sure that the data the transmission has stored is up to date. Sometimes a transmission can be shifting roughly, and after a teach-in, it's nice and smooth.

    • @Mannycreated
      @Mannycreated 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe I need to do that. I have a transmission code, something to do with the clutch? But the car drives good

    • @StephenStrangways
      @StephenStrangways  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Which code? A teach-in certainly can't hurt, but if the problem is enough to trigger a code, it will likely need more than just a teach-in.

      Stephen Strangways the transmission code is P1874 and it has something to do with the Clutch2 Pressure???

    • @StephenStrangways
      @StephenStrangways  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can try a teach-in. If the code comes back, it means either your clutch has likely worn down to almost nothing, and inspecting or replacing it is the first troubleshooting step. If the clutch is fine, or it comes back after replacing the clutch, replacing the mechatronic assembly is the next troubleshooting step.

  • @mcnichristian
    @mcnichristian 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    so what exactly is the whole point to doing this ?

    • @StephenStrangways
      @StephenStrangways  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      By doing teach-in, the SST runs self-tests in the mechatronic assembly and clutches, and then stores that data. After replacing any of those components you need to do a teach-in. Many owners also choose to do it to account for the normal wear on components from a year or more of driving. A car that has slightly rough shifts is usually smooth as butter afterwards.

Not my video but it's 100% what mine is doing, the click, click and grind at the end. Same year and everything. Would tuning/teach in help with this or what is even going on with my car? I've been told it could be numerous things and also to teach in the Evo software. Around here in Iowa, no one seems to know how to work on this car so I'm trying to reach out to other ralliart/evo owners.

    • @StephenStrangways
      @StephenStrangways  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This was a known problem with the 2009-2010 Lancer Evolution MR and Ralliart. Mitsubishi issued a Technical Service Bulletin to solve it: "On affected vehicles equipped with W6DGA TC−SST transmissions, the TCM quickly engages and disengages 5th gear to determine whether the vehicle is moving. Noises can be heard as the shift fork attempts to move from neutral to 5th gear, and back to neutral immediately following engine start after an
      extended time being parked (e.g. overnight parking).
      This TSB instructs technicians to reprogram the TCM with new software to prevent gear noise by
      eliminating the 5th gear vehicle speed check."
      From my experience and the experiences of others, most dealerships are unable to follow the simple instructions on performing the software update, so you're better off doing it yourself using PassThru CAN.
      For a 2009 or 2010 Ralliart you would flash 8631B002.cff which contains version 8631A8600B, or for a 2010 Evolution MR you would flash 8631B001.cff which contains version 8631A8270B

      Immediately after teach-in? I've noticed that cars will creep forward much faster - in drive, foot off the throttle - than before, because of the "reset clutch gain" step. After a day or two of driving, the transmission learns a new clutch gain value, and will go back to normal. So, if the jiggle is caused by that, it should go back to normal after some driving.
