For anyone curious, the registering hands as weapons myth comes from Joe Louis. Before a fight, to intimidate his opponent. He even had his team dress as cops to come along and help him "sign the register".
Truth is that there is very little legal difference between someone who can fight and someone who can not fight when it comes to self-defence. As a matter of fact, someone who can fight is much more likely to defend themselves in a legal manner than someone who cannot.

People who don't know wtf they are doing can end up being just as dangerous because they will kill someone accidentally, like punching someone repeatedly in the back of the head, etc. Sad thing is usually those people are getting in fights with people they know, drunkenly, and someone ends up dead.
People with real martial arts training usually have a lot more self discipline, just as a matter of requirement to even go into that field of study, and know when use of force is required, how to apply it, and when it's not required anymore. Notice I precluded that statement with "usually". Some martial artists turn out later to be roided-up freaks who murder their girlfriend.

There use to be a myth in sixties that if you practiced martial arts you had register your hands as deadly weapons. Apparently there is an element of truth of this in Japan. There's a lot of confusion about this subject actually. From what i can tell there is no legal classification for knowing how to fight in the us. However (!!!) if you are convicted of a fighting related crime a judge could absolutely factor your physical advantage in sentencing. Think of it as a responsibility multiplier. The much more likely scenario is civil court. Any lawyer ever born would make your physical prowess the center piece of a wrongful injury suit, just as they would with drug/alcohol use etc...

I'm not sure (don't really care to look it up right now) that in Jamaica you need a licence if you practice martial arts and/or cage fighting. Seems like most places in the world if you train in fighting you are registered as a weapon so to speak. If you fight and cause bodily harm you can be charged with use of a deadly weapon unless (depending in the situation) you can prove absolutely that was nothing more than self defence.

I hate this line of thought. It doesn't matter if you are a professional fighter or not. If you fight with someone and it becomes a legal matter, it wasn't any more illegal for a professional fighter to be in that fight than it is for anyone else. The only thing that would be considered with that is how badly the professional beat the other person. Was it reasonable force, or did he take it farther than necessary. Which is the same thing they consider for anyone else in that situation actually. You might find cases where they did take it into consideration, but that doesn't mean it was more or less legal for them to fight than anyone else. The law has to apply equally across the board. Otherwise, their lawyer could bring a motion to dismiss based on that. This is ego more than anything else, ego and Hollywood.

There are really no laws in the US regulating martial arts and martial artist. The red string thing, that actually goes back to the head of boxing and it was a marketing gimmick. But here’s the thing. A judge will take a look at you if you’re a professional or train fighter and that could play heavily in their opinion of what any punishment should be. The fact is if you know how to fight and you’ve been trained, are you smart. Seven sad rather be judged by 12 than carried by six. May, I’d rather use my damn head and stay out of either situation whenever possible. You don’t like a freaking adult.
And if you do one of these things were your hands are registered, no matter how much is a Jokers. That crap can backfire on you big time in court. Don’t do that crap.

They had a weekend training event that involved stand up, take down, ground, and weapons defense fighting. The last day of the event a lawyer was brought in to inform all the students that there are more legal ronsequences that will hold up in court for someone who is trained to fight and uses their force irresponsible to desolve a situation, get in a fight, etc. If you take it to far in the streets, you definitely can serve bigger jail time than the average person that does not have fight training. This is a fact.. im not a black belt in any of ky martial arts.. bjj(blue), muay thai for 9 years, judo for 3.. but due to my local reputation as a martial artist and amateur fights, when i was stabbed in a street fight they charged me with a worse felony than my attacker.. all because of my background.. years later, the same kid that stabbed me and got off with lesser chargers claiming he feared for his lofe agaisnt me and thats what prompted him to stab me, was later arrested for killing his gf.. stabbing her to death... no bs..
Juan botello stamford, CT... look it up..
