This is everywhere now though. Look at the reverence for athletes. I used to work for a Fortune 50 company & saw the CEO of the company on the elevator. You weren't allowed to talk to him or even look in his direction. It's power syndrome. It's not just Hollywood. People with power are pretty much a-holes everywhere.

Exactly. The whole time, I was thinking "wait... he really believes this phenomenon is different from any corporate job interview, in any area of the country (or world for that matter), for the past several decades?"
On top of that, imagine choosing this particular industry (of acting/entertainment) where you're *constantly* applying for job-after-job...where you know beforehand that each job is *designed* to last a very limited amount of time...where you are forced to move on to the next gig. Um, yes, you tell your potential employers what you know they want to hear. It's not at all exclusive to L.A. or Hollywood.

Josh, can't tell if your reply was intended to be a rebuttal of my comment or not, but your first sentence is a reinforcement of my last paragraph, and the underlying point: acting/entertainment jobs don't last (and are that way by design), which is different from "normal" jobs. Yet even with normal, long-lasting career jobs, people (applicants) posture disingenuously to land the job. So of *course* the same is going to happen in a line of work where every job is fleeting by design.
As for your second sentence, that may or may not be true; I have no personal experience in that.

Brilliant and true. I came to Hollywood wanting to be Ingmar Bergman and I got a few good movies made (and some not--so good ones because that's what the financiers wanted me to do), but then I burned out in part because of the mentality Joe describes so accurately. There is also this thing about bowing down before the writer or actor or director who is the group think Flavor Of The Month, and if you don not echo that adulation by rote you're considered "an outsider," or someone who "doesn't below." So now I write novels and am much happier, although (I confess) I still date actresses....

One thing he didn't mention, which is hard to verbalize...Is the way LA / LA County is laid out.
There is something about the way it's sits inbetween valleys where the horizon is limited.
It does something mentaly to go long periods of time without seeing a wide horizon or the sky due to mountains. Other cities have mountains but the way LA is it creats this "What else is out there" mentality, this "If I just do X I can have it all", "The grass is greener mentality". Plus, everyone you meet is "working on some big thing"...Everyone is hustling, most people are so superficial due to the previous, it just creates this culture of disingenuine sincere people, who think they're doing good.
