I used a small plastic bag over the end of a jam jar and poked a small hole in the middle of the bag then poured water up to just the point where the water touched the underside of the plastic bag then rested the avocado in the center of the plastic bag. No need then for the cocktail sticks. Works like a dream. The root goes down through the bag into the water and you can then plant it into soil.

After 50 years I finally sprouted my first avocado. It's my understanding it's sterile and won't ever bear fruit, but it's still fun and a pretty houseplant. We named it Groot. Groot is now a good 6ft tall, and I just put Baby Groot, who's about 8" tall, in a pot. WORD TO THE WISE: turns out Groots HATE transplanting. When Big Groot was about 5' tall, my hubby put him in a nice big new fancy pot. He promptly went into horrible shock, wilted, dropped leaves and gave every indication of imminent death. Amazingly, Big Groot got over his fit and is fine now, but my hubby was so distraught and felt so bad, he went and bought me an avocado tree from the local nursery 😆
@@trinathierry9797 he's still in a big pot. Did great on the front porch last summer, then it got too cold and windy and he tried to die on me again. Now he's in the dining room, coming back from the dead for like the 10th time. Sorry I don't know the exact size of the pot; it's about 22" across the top and 18" tall.

Thank you for this! Started growing my seed about a month ago in a clear glass cup and its finally starting to root. Nothing too much like you've shown, just a nub thats cracking the seed but its getting there! I was looking at how to transfer it once it gets to that stage and you've explained it perfectly! Can't wait! Thanks again!
can you explain how? also are you supposed to plant it into a pot once it has leaves or when the one root is long? (my seed is barely sprouting from the top and the root at the bottom is long)
I once grew a few avocado plants sucessfully from a book and it was recommended to cut the plant when it measured 6 inches. This was to make the stem of the plant much stronger. Otherwise you end up with a vine and it needs support. I love avocados and encouraged many people to grow them in their apartments. Of course, many people didn't want to cut the top off, but the top will grow much faster than it took to grow the first time. They love a sunny window and look so wonderful as a little tree.
My grandson and I were just talking about trying to grow an avocado, we live in South Texas and the climate is perfect. Thanks for the video!!! Subscribed :)
Thanks for making these videos in such an easy to understand manner and not making assumptions about my knowledge. I'm growing my avocado using the green boat shaped device you showed (it was a gift) and it's useful to know I need to watch out that I can get the roots out through the hole. I am also growing potatoes and tomatoes for the first time.
I’ve been using room temp alkaline water and I can’t beleive how fast my first avacodo plant 🌱 is growing however it was getting a bit long with no leaves so I’ve moved it to the sunny window ☀️ thank you for this video 😊
Hello from Australia. Your technique for growing in water worked perfectly for us. It took a good 2 months not that was to be expected. Thank you for the tips
The way we do it is in a pot of seed raising soil. Put the seed mostly in the soil with part of the top showing. Keep moist & in the sun. Works every time for me 👍
With the plastic bottle idea you can always cut around the spout of the bottle before placing the avocado. When the roots spread then you can cut the lighter plastic much easier and remove it from the grown plant because there is no hard and tough plastic to cut.
Wow this video just showed me how many things I did wrong & why it just didn’t grow past the part where my 1 root grew!😩 thank you! All the way from Arkansas, US.
It everything will work cuz we all live in different regions and climates and elevations so don’t listen if somebody whines. I always appreciate your tips when I use them.
We are transplanting our seed today...we tried this before with no success until we followed your videos. Our plant is leggy, but beautiful. We grew it in a long vase, which now we are learning next one keep it in a shorter glass but we got the long roots in gently and it seems happy.I just have to fool it and keep talking to it with your accent and I think we will have some guacamole at our 2030 New Year's Eve bash!
Thank you ~ You seem to know the questions I'm currently having. My Pits have One Long Nice Root but no top tree. I think I will try planting anyway. So Fun!! You are the Greatest!! Karen
I'd still wait a little Karen. Nice to know you're giving it a try. Make sure they get lots of sunlight and warm water. Cold water will slow the growth. Good luck :)
I WILL wait ... so anxious, but I will bask them in sunlight & warm H2O as you suggest. You're such a Garden Guru!! Love the projects. Take Care. Karen Thank You
Hi! Aloe Vera is a really hardy plant. Just start with a small plant and don't put any manure or fertilizer in potting soil. Once it starts growing, water at long intervals . I mean let the soil dry between watering intervals. It will flourish!
Thanks for the videos. I planted a commercial Haas avocado seedling in the backyard 25 years ago. Today it's 30 feet tall and produces a tremendous amount of fruit. We've been harvesting since April this year, it still has enough fruit to get us through October and it looks like the new crop will start being ready around February. Anyway, you've inspired me and I'm growing my first from seed. The tap root popped out a few weeks ago and the chute came out this week and is growing fast. Eventually I'll graft on a branch from the parent tree. California
Hala Halabiya Bastards. I hate them they dig up my tubers. I’ve found the perfect deterrent....very hot chilli powder on the floor. Seems to keep them away. If it was lawful to shoot them believe be me I would ☝️
Since my last post I’m delighted to report a local cat killed a large fat squirrel in my garden last week. I’ve got it on video. Since then haven’t seen any around. Hope it serves as a deterrent. Was a happy moment for sure.
Planting a lot of seeds in a big plastic container of Perlite, with 1/3 of pointy-end of seed sticking up, works well if you have a lot. They can take from 3-7 weeks to sprout, though some will already be starting inside the fruit. I have 36 Mexican avocado seeds almost 4 weeks along now. My friend, who grafts onto seedlings from his avocado trees, advised this method.
My sister didn't know when to transplant her avocados and this video really helped.also her leggy avocado is living in front of my window now..I love stealing her plants:)) thank you very much
I never had luck with growing from a seed in water 💦... What I did was take my avocado seed and stuck it in a pot outside and it worked, I have a little avocado 🌳
❤ Thank you! I have two avocado seeds in water for about 5minths now and they're simply too tall to keep in plastic cups anymore. Leaves are still lovely and green, but it's time.
I did the plastic bottle, just use a stanley knife to cut through the top when you're ready, nice sharp blade, no probs. Good work, good video! Sorry, forgot to mention I cut the rim off the top of at the beginning which takes the thicker plastic away and gives more width for the root and easier to cut off later.
I transplanted my Avocado seed 3 days ago, I moved it from the glass full of water. The plant had a nice long stem with a few leaves and a long root. It started wilting immediately. I watered it to maintain the soil humid but I want to know, is there anything else I can do to avoid it from wilting more?
I've followed your previous video instructions and I got root after 19 days over here in Saudi Arabia :) ... I will use this one as well for later stage. many thank for sharing such valued information and instructions. Cheers!
Love the video. Wife has 3 starting today. The fun fact that it’s going to take 5-10 yrs before she can have a berry from these crushed part of her dream lol. Great video and information.
thank you so much i am in Puerto Rico retired so among a great many other things i have taken interest is growing things, thanx for the insight on avocados
Good project. It requires patience. Now that avocado tree will take 20 years to produce the first crop so find an adult and fruit producing avocado so you can make a graft. After a successful graft you should have the first crop in 2 to 3 years.
Man this whole time i thought I was running out of time on the transplant 😂 I’m like maybe over the halfway hump! Now that I know it takes bout 10 years to fruit...kinda excited bout this little guys journey 😬 thanks for the info.
This really works great! I tried it and my avocado has so much roots and started to grow a stalk and leaf after 2 months. I tried 4, and they are doing great! Thanks so much and keep posting.
To fix the plants roots getting stuck in the neck of the sports bottle collar....cut it first lengthways & then tape it back together with waterproof gaffer tape. You can then easily remove the plant from the collar when it comes time to transplant.....great video thank you as I've had a great deal of success from your advice, even if I'm literally on the other side of the world. Greetings from South Australia.
Thank you, awesome advice mate! My avacado plant was begining to have a long trunk and only a few small leaves. I have now placed it in a safe and sunny spot and look forward to its progress. Thanks again.
If my plant is already leggy, about 8 inches tall should I trim it at all? Ive seen other people say to snip it off at 6 inches to encourage thicker bases? Moving it to better light today.
Project Diaries thanks! I'm nervous to cut it, the last one I did and it died shortly after :( might let this one be. It's 8" tall but has 5 leaves already and is loving it's new sunny spot
Mine is really tall too but I do have another one coming up. So if I trim the long one and it dies I'll still have the other, so trimming it will be ok you think
My avocado seed has grown very tall, it had beautiful green leaves and the tips have just started to brown so I think I should pot it. However there is not much of a root network, just one very thick long root that has curled up in the glass. Any advice please?
I planted an avocado seed from a half avocado (with pit) from a local Indian restaurant given as an 'extra' with my left overs. Looking at these online videos the thing never should have grown at all. I have nothing but northern views out of my apartment windows with the reflected light off of the building across from me. maybe 60 feet. I never peeled it. the pit had a significant cut in it from the knife. I planted it directly in a pot filled with soil from a succulent that had died of freeze-burn that winter on my window sill (the window was partly open for ventilation...opps.) Well, after maybe three months...it sprouted. I was kind of amazed. I've moved it to the bathroom window where the humidity and reflected light (white tile) is better. The plant, as you've said, is rather tall and spindly, (a bit over a foot tall and maybe four months old) four good sized healthy green leaves on it (three to four inches long). I'm not sure what to do next? The pot is similar to the one you've shown. the soil always only covered the lower half. What kind of pot/soil system works best for a young avocado at this stage. It will never get direct sunlight unless I move to another apartment I'd guess.
I have had my avocado 🥑 growing for about six months now in the Uk 🇬🇧, four and a half months ago the root started growing and just this month it has started with side roots. The avocado still does not have a stem and I am wondering why other people seem to have theirs growing so fast. Any advice would be great 👍🏽
I have the same problem I am in Washington state and our weather is probably alot like the Uk's. I've had my seed in water for 3 months and I have roots but no growth(stem) on top. It looks like it's doing well but it's taking forever to get it to stem. Any advice? It's now spring here so maybe I may get lucky and it will have some growth on top?
Trevor Cole my main problem living in the uk is the watering because there is sometimes a salt build up. You should keep it on the window sill and the temperature must be above 16 degrees Celsius
Excellent. My sister grows tropical fruit trees in her apartment. I thought it was amazing, being from the tropic I was marveled to see this done. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I live in the USA, in Rhode Island. I grew an avocado tree and put it outside during the summer and then i put it in a sunny window in the winter. I read somewhere that if you want your tree to grow fruit you have to grow two in one pot. So I did because my single seeds never gave fruit. Last summer an animal of some kind ATE one of my seeds because they're still connected to the tree. I then grew another and when it was ready I planted it next to the first one. As you can imagine one was taller than the other BUT it's been 3 yrs and they are now almost the same size! I take it in on summer nights now because it's a nocturnal animal eating them! 😕 I can't wait for the fruit to appear!! Mine is so healthy and green it seems to like me! LOL, I SPRITZ it every morning and water it when the soil feels dry and I talk to it too! 😂 But it's growing so well so something I'm doing is working! I wanted to ask you how many yrs before it has fruit, I've read 5 yrs but then you said 5 to 7 depending on if it's organic or not but I'm not sure because I always buy them on sale, I don't pay attention to whether they're organic or not. I'm going to try and grow a lemon tree next! 😉👍 Oh FYI, I NEVER peel the skin off my seeds and mine have NEVER TURNED green with algae so maybe that's where your problem with algae lies? Happy gardening!! 🌱🌿🌾 😆❤
Thanks for a tutorial that was easy for me to understand. One Question : can I cut off the trunk of it gets too tall ? I live in California, (southern area) so it will be going outside at some time. If I cut the trunk, will it branch out ? Tganks , Toni
Thanks for the informative video. I'm living in Thailand and my avocado is now 4 months old showing a 6 inch stem. Time to put it into a pot soon I think.

Your technique for growing in water worked perfectly for us. It took a good 2 months not that was to be expected. Thank you for the tips
The way we do it is in a pot of seed raising soil. Put the seed mostly in the soil with part of the top showing. Keep moist & in the sun. Works every time for me 👍
After like 15 tries, thanks to you I finally did it mate. Thanks so much!
Captain Morgan, I have only watched 3 of your videos and I'm already hooked in, you're doing an amazing mission. Keep doing you dude, Peace!
Thank you Adrian :)
I enjoyed these videos Keep it going
Your videos are not only great topics, but did you know you have a fun and enjoyable voice? You would make a good radio host. So adorable!
Thank you for this video! You have a great channel!! Keep up the fantastic work! Yeay!
You're welcome :)
It everything will work cuz we all live in different regions and climates and elevations so don’t listen if somebody whines. I always appreciate your tips when I use them.
Thanks for making this video!
I've been growing avocados for the past 3 years and this video is full of useful information.
Do they bear fruits now??
Take Care. Karen Thank You
No waffling just interesting informative and to the point, excellent upload, already popped my advacado into a glass
I use a coffee filter in the bottom of my pots to prevent all the soil washing out
I use broken clay pots scatter some fragments on the bottom to create drainage without soil loss
@@Tombs42 i do that or rocks too 😄
@@MarciaBaker1205 Yeah, good stuff. FYI, I only realised your original comment was from 2 years ago! Fairplay for the reply.
I use fly screen
I am growing an avocado plant it's really fun!
can you please do a video on how to grow and maintain aloe vera?:)
Ruby Grace agree, me too
I have planned on doing a video on the benefits of Aloe Vera but I don't have plans to grow any just yet. I'll add it to the list though :)
Hi! Aloe Vera is a really hardy plant. Just start with a small plant and don't put any manure or fertilizer in potting soil. Once it starts growing, water at long intervals . I mean let the soil dry between watering intervals. It will flourish!
Hi I always struggle with Aloe Vera, the roots keep rotting or it becomes leggy and falls. 😭
Sandy cactus mix is only thing that keeps mine from trying to escape the containers
I know, I just adore him! Such positive energy!
After 5 to 10 years I don’t think I will remember the taste of the avocado I got it from😂
Thanks for the videos. California
Awesome. How long did it take from planting to produce fruits? Many thanks 😊
RIP to my 🥑 a hungry squirrel🐿 just ate my avocado seed😵😒😭
Hala Halabiya Bastards. I hate them they dig up my tubers. I’ve found the perfect deterrent....very hot chilli powder on the floor. Seems to keep them away. If it was lawful to shoot them believe be me I would ☝️
Since my last post I’m delighted to report a local cat killed a large fat squirrel in my garden last week. I’ve got it on video. Since then haven’t seen any around. Hope it serves as a deterrent. Was a happy moment for sure.
Louise Voraujan wtf
Oh noooo. I love animals but thats messed up.
Like in Dennis the Menace when he ruined his plant lmao
Planting a lot of seeds in a big plastic container of Perlite, with 1/3 of pointy-end of seed sticking up, works well if you have a lot. They can take from 3-7 weeks to sprout, though some will already be starting inside the fruit. I have 36 Mexican avocado seeds almost 4 weeks along now. My friend, who grafts onto seedlings from his avocado trees, advised this method.
My sister didn't know when to transplant her avocados and this video really helped.also her leggy avocado is living in front of my window now..I love stealing her plants:)) thank you very much
haha! i hope she doesn't mind. Good luck :)

So excited to find this channel. My sister gave me one and it is all stretched out. I learned something new. Thank you 😊
Have you seen an avocado bonsai? It's so cute..please try to make it someday 😊
I haven't. I'll check it out :)
im so happy to have found this channel ! i jus started putting my green thumb to good use and picked up gardening again
Awww! me too. that's great :)
Very informative an interesting I'm from India this is Dinesh here bro nice information keep Rocking in ur life ♥️
Good to hear! Thanks :)
I recently came across your channel. Great videos! Subscribed and watched them all. Thank you for your time and effort. Awesome smile :)
Wow! that's a lot of watch time. Thank you :)
Glad I found this video. Definitely trying it. It'll look nice on my desk. It has a very sunny view from the window.
Nice one! good luck :)
Did this little avocado survive? D:
Ashley Renee yes..
Sacarl Martin AWESOME!
I tried your video last time and now my avocado grow.. looking forward for more!
Cheers!
I just put avokado seed in the soil, not cover it ,but some of it,and it work fine😁
Love the video. Wife has 3 starting today. The fun fact that it’s going to take 5-10 yrs before she can have a berry from these crushed part of her dream lol. Great video and information.
Can you do an update on lemon and fruit trees?
I've recorded it. Just need to edit and upload at some point
thank you so much i am in Puerto Rico retired so among a great many other things i have taken interest is growing things, thanx for the insight on avocados
Good project. It requires patience.
Now that avocado tree will take 20 years to produce the first crop so find an adult and fruit producing avocado so you can make a graft.
After a successful graft you should have the first crop in 2 to 3 years.
markspc1 how do you graft one? This is all new to me. Thanks
What is a graft?
Man this whole time i thought I was running out of time on the transplant 😂 I’m like maybe over the halfway hump! Now that I know it takes bout 10 years to fruit...kinda excited bout this little guys journey 😬 thanks for the info.
Hey buddy! What is the status of the plant at this time? Did it grow well in the soil? Did it survive?
yes it did
No it didn’t it died to death LoL
This really works great! I tried it and my avocado has so much roots and started to grow a stalk and leaf after 2 months. I tried 4, and they are doing great! Thanks so much and keep posting.
Two months?? Mine takes 4 to grow a small stem! :,((! What did you do?
Your so awesome project diaries
Thanks! :)
Never knew Dave Grohl had such a green thumb!
"I got another confession to make... " :)
Thank you, awesome advice mate! My avacado plant was begining to have a long trunk and only a few small leaves. I have now placed it in a safe and sunny spot and look forward to its progress. Thanks again.
I can't wait to try growing my own avocados. Once again my theory wins- you don't have to be rich to live rich.
Nice informative video, you have a really lovely personality :)
The seed broke in half while I was transferring it to the potted soil but the roots were still intact. Will it survive?
I dont know
Let's all pray for your avacado
The same thing happened to me and mine survived!
I live in a very cold area, this video is extremely helpful. Thanks
I'm so curious,,, do you play guitar? I can't stop looking at your hands. Either way, thanks for the information. So helpful!
This is so helpful! Thank you so much. There's not another video out there shooting how to do this, which is exactly what I needed!
If my plant is already leggy, about 8 inches tall should I trim it at all? Ive seen other people say to snip it off at 6 inches to encourage thicker bases? Moving it to better light today.
It's really up to you. 6" plus is a good size to cut it if you want to. More light the better :)
Same here.. what happened to yours?
Left handed guitar player? Nails. :>)
I planted it directly in a pot filled with soil from a succulent that had died of freeze-burn that winter on my window sill (the window was partly open for ventilation...opps.)
Well, after maybe three months...it sprouted.
Any advice would be great 👍🏽
might be too cold in general since our climate is colder. or it might be that it's not getting enough sunlight
hi mate.im close to putting my seed into soil..the plant will be for inside .does the pot need holes in the bottom or can i use a pot without holes?
Every plant needs good drainage holes, yes!
cheers pal
Lee
Like your manner, style and approach. Thank you.
Can you make a video how to grow broccoli please
Grandad doesn't really like Broccoli but I may look into planting a long stem variety at some point...
Can you do how to divide flower bulbs ?
Which flowers?
Project Diaries any you feel like :)
I'm looking at doing my Lily Bulbs at some point :)
Project Diaries I'm really looking toward to what this season is going to bring :)
Very good presentation. I have 5 seeds to plant. Will try this technique. Hopefully I will live to taste the fruit. I like the Captain Morgan cap. It appears you visited San Pedro , Belize. Hope you enjoyed it. Come back again. Thanks for sharing. G. Parham
