  • A question I get asked frequently is, 'when should I prune my avocado tree?' paired often with 'when should I plant my avocado tree?'. In this video, I discuss the how and when of planting and pruning avocado saplings.
    The timing of avocado tree pruning is important, especially if you have already planted your tree or are thinking about planting your tree. In this video I also discuss how tall avocado trees are when I prune them and how much I prune off my avocado trees.

      I just pruned my avocado tree recently and now I need to repot it because the plants outgrown it’s current pot, can I repot it even though I pruned it? Or should I wait for new growth to appear before reporting? I am growing it with grow lights, roots are coming out of drainage hole so I know that it definitely needs a repot, I just want to do what’s best for the plant, but I’m not sure what procedure to do first

      You can still grow your avocado trees from indoors. I live out in zone six and take out my avocado trees out side every summer and then bring them in around fall, it works.

    I've watched a few videos and decided to hard prune my little indoor plants. I was too anxious to remove every leaf so just left one leaf on each plant. I'm worried now as some videos show you need to leave a few leaves on but I see you've pruned hard too...so fingers crossed. My plants were healthy and doing well so I'd be gutted if I've killed them!
    Update...plants are doing well!! Lots of little side shoots and leaves coming through 😃💪🌱

    Ok.. you are the best at explaining the pruning and transplanting process of an avocado. I don't remember when I started my avocado seeking in water, but I do know it was before Christmas. We are now in mid May, and I haven't pruned it once. I was ready to transfer it to soil but wasn't sure to prune instantly. Thank you.

    Help?!
    I have an avocado tree that, I don't really know how old he is, but definitely older then I think 4 years. But it's still really long and thin, it sprouted in a dark place, I was very young and had never before been able to grow something from a seed, so I put this pit i found in some dirt left it on a window shel (the thing that's attached to windows that's like a mini table (my English is still in progress)) when it dis not sprout I think I did not wanted to look at it anymore so I guess I placed it in the (very dark) garage, forgot about it and then all I rember is one day finding something green in a pot. I loved it and it grew in a long long thin stick. I didn't think much about it, again I never even knew if avocado's grow from bushes or trees, and it got really big leafs but as it grew the leafs would lose their grip and fall, but while my tree was losing leaves that looked perfectly healthy to me it also sprouted new ones on top. It's been that way for many years, I am sure it had sufficient sunlight because it got sunburns and i my mum moved it to a more shadowi place, with I think just indirect light. It is very possible it now longs for more light though but I'm a little scared of throwing them in a shock. Wich i already did once, replanting them in a way to large pot. Come to think of it I never have repot them since.
    Can I still prune them after all these years, do I best leave them alone, I really don't know.
    Maybe it helps to report that they had to struggle with mealybugs.
    Please help they're looking rather silly now

    Hi Scott, I live on Costa del Sol & picked a bunch of avocados from the trees in front of my house last October. I put them in tissues & placed them in a washing up bowl in a warm cupboard. I planted them in soil at end of January & kept them inside until recently. One is 67cm tall, some medium height & some very short. When should I cut the tall ones down to encourage lower leaf growth & should the bulb be visible on the plants to get more direct sunlight? The temp here now is about 11-15 at night & 15-25 during the day. Thanks Mate 🙏😎

    I’m finding that citrus cactus soil is ideal for avocado plants. You don’t even have to do anything to it just straight out of the bag. It is perfect for growing avocado plants because it’s a very well dreaming soil since it’s made for citrus and cactus. Those plants do not like wet roots, so it’s perfect for a once or twice a week watering routine for an indoor plant. I’ve used my moisture meter and at around 3 to 4 days it needs watering so about once or twice a week depending on the season soil took my transplants from water extremely well. The plants have been super happy since day one they never got any shock or needed to acclimate. They have just been happy happy happy plants. I’m using the miracle grow Citrus/cactus/ soil I highly recommend 10/10 2 months in with zero issues.

    Hello there, thank you for this channel (infos, care, mood). One more question, tho: can I prune my Avocado REALLY down below, so that it branches lower? And can I do so multiple times (while saving at least the previous prune point)? My goal is to have a really small and bushy avocado plant, that grows fruit in the smallest window of time, possible.

    • @ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree
      @ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey! Thank you for the kind words 😊
      Pruning as you describe will cause it to become bushy! Though it probably won’t speed up the rate at which it produces avocados - the wood needs to mature, which takes time. Though grafting can speed up the process.
      Sounds great regardless - all the best!

    Hi! I had a question about my avocado plant.
    I germinated my seeds before putting them in water and now they have grown tall and have leaves. The problem is that that roots are too long for a pot, they are about 32 cm tall, including the seed, and I can't find a long pot like that.
    Can I trim the roots a little or is it not okay? I don't want my plant to die so I'm just making sure. Thanks!

Should I wait for new growth to appear on top before repotting or could I just repot immediately regardless of pruning? my tree is in soil has been in soil for a year, just pruned a few days ago to encourage branching I left two leaves on the plants so the plant can still do photosynthesis . me too but I don't see many replies from other commentators much less from the channel. It is sad. I don't know what to do with a 3-4 y old avocado with some leaves at the top, I'd like it to branch but dunno bc pruning will leave it without any leaves.. I live in canada in a 5b zone , it is already in soil for several years and we bring it in for winter. So will it go back to having leaves? when this pruning should be done and where as it is now some 4 feet tall. thanks in advance to anyone that had this experience

    I have a potted leggy avocado stem with two leaves. It's winter now. Is it too late to trim it halfway now? Poor baby. I didn't know about pruning. I grew it from water and potted it correctly, but then bam it shot up and the leaves kept falling off as it grew taller.

    Hey Scott thanks for your video, very informative. I'm just wondering what you think of putting the pruned off parts of the plant in water to see if it will grow roots...? perhaps after removing one or two leaves so roots can grow from those points. I'm about to prune my baby tree which is a few months old, and will give it a try. Interested to know if anyone else has tried this...

      Hello, and thank you! That's a great question - I've gotten it a number of times and I really need to try it. I haven't tried it myself yet - but I'd be very keen to hear how you get on when you try it!

      @@ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree Well... I put the pruned off shoot in water and it didn't work, it's become increasingly limp and dead looking, so I have thrown it away. The roots on the main plant however have grown a lot, but no signs of any stem growth though. The stem does seem much harder, which I hope is a good sign!? I hope it will grow back :( guess I have to be patient?

    • @ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree

      Hey hey! Initially - yes. I will prune once the tree is older and mature to shape and things, but that's not until the tree is quite a few years old :)

      You don’t :) it can sit on top or underneath, so long as the roots are in the soil

      Sometimes you need another avocado tree nearby! Or you need to attract more bees to your yard so they’ll carry other avocado tree pollen to your tree. Also, if you grew your avocado tree from a store bought avocado (seed), sometimes those seeds won’t grow to a tree that produces fruit (sad I know!)

    I've come to realise that putting your avocado seed directly into soil is way more easier and faster than to let it germinate in water.

    My avocado tree has multiple stalks, should I cut one off?

    • @ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree
      @ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It probably means it has multiple trees in it - I’ve done a little bit of playing around with this and it seems that the best thing to do is to prune one of them back until it dies - otherwise the two trees will fight for survival, which may kill both 😅
