      I know it isn't everyone's favorite, but there is a line from ME andromeda that I love so much. The krogan on your crew is talking to the Turian on your ship. He remembers when he first saw humans he said. "They are bold for being so squishy, do they know they are made of water?" The turian told him not to tell you (human) but I loved it! Like no matter how inferior we might be to something or how impossible the task. We will still try, with everything we got.

    Placing the 'blame' for a demotion onto the person who promoted them in the first place is such an interesting concept. One of the reasons i really like the Turians.

    • @sidetracker3496
      @sidetracker3496 6 ปีที่แล้ว +82

      SecondSince Not necessarily the right answer.
      Case n point yes if you promote a blabbering baffone yes the blame lies solely on you.
      But if a cunning individual who is not up to the task fakes his achievements and lies about his abilities successfully by tricking everyone e or by stealing other people's accomplishments and he gets promoted...the blame is certainly that of the liar.
      The only reason why this doesn't happen with the Turians is because of their strong ethics code....or we just aren't told about it.

    • @cordar7547
      @cordar7547 6 ปีที่แล้ว +51

      Well, it's explained in their description that they have a strong sense of civic duty that comes in part from their ten to fifteen years of mandatory military service, starting with boot camp at age 15. In short they prioritize the group over oneself to the point where criminals more often than not will confess to their crimes if directly confronted about their wrongdoings.

    • @MarikHavair
      @MarikHavair 6 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      The promoter would still be guilty of being taken in by a ruse, judging not just the merit, but also the character of said promotee is a crucial task. You could argue that placing blame for the failures of a demoted Turian on his promoter is quite open for abuse by a cunning corrupt Turian seeking to abuse his rank from behind a shield, and you'd be right, but establishing the character of an individual you've sponsored for promotion is easily as important as their competence.
      So like any system there's no clear "winner", mostly just circumstantial trade offs in either direction.

    I've always considered Turians as similar to the ancient Spartans. I know they get compared to ancient Romans but the strict militaristic organization of their society, and their core values are the same as they were in ancient Sparta.

    • @Xpistos510
      @Xpistos510 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      And Rome borrowed culturally from Sparta. There are valid comparisons to both. Turians seem to be philosophically Aristotelian and Socratic, as much as they are politically Classical Republican (Roman). Rome's military was directly inspired by Sparta. So I think that comparing them to Rome is better because it's more encompassing of all of these philosophical Greco-Roman values. Public service and civic nationalism were paramount in both societies.
      But if Turians are Spartan-Rome, then Asari are more Athenian.

    • @bryanjames7528
      @bryanjames7528 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Looking closely, Spartan culture of not accepting slaves or non Spartan free civilians into becoming Spartan citizens was its downfall. Spartans only made up 10% of their population while slaves made up 80%. Their strict military discipline was the result of them fearing slave revolts which also forced them to only commit 1/3 of their force to war. This in turn resulted in their decline after their wars with Athens which saw almost all their military aged men killed. Alexander never invaded them cuz by his time Spartan only had 1500 men but they were only a shadow of their former selves. By the time of Roman Empire Sparta was jus a tourist attraction. Their discipline during the Roman times was just borderline physical abuse which is what we see in 300 or in books. Which is why Turians is more suited to be compared to Roman legionaries as they both were involved in not just military but public infrastructure, fire fighting, law enforcement and government clerks

    This channel is insanely good. The narrator for most of the sci-fi series is so clear and concise and really does deserve so much credit for presenting such complex worlds and storylines so well, though the channel as a whole is excellent. Something that might be interesting to go into is how these societies might function on a broader level outside of the lore that has been given to us. For example, what are the social other norms in Turian society or, in W40k, what roles do sexuality and criminality play in such a large and diverse empire, and with the multitude different species? These may seem like abstract things but they all relate, as we are seeing now, to the issues advanced societies face, such as those in the video and those we live in. I think it'd be really interesting to think about how a lot of the political, social and economic issues we experience now might apply to these imaginary worlds. At the end of the day, the way a lot of these games, novels, and films deal with these worlds is limited, purely out of completely human constraints like time. But still, how would things like racism and trade work between different species work in universes like those of Mass Effect and W40K?. Either way, keep doing what you're doing, it's great! Also do some stuff on the Endless Space 2 universe!!! It's so rich in unique and fascinating lore!

    At 7:13 you use the term intergalactic war. This would mean that the war would be fought in more than one galaxy (which wouldn't be the case). The correct term is 'interstellar war'. Just a minor detail that I noticed.

    It really astonishes me how many people repeatedly misuse the term "intergalactic" - not just fans, but actual sci fi authors and professional writers from multiple franchises. "Intergalactic" means "between galaxies". Mass Effect only takes place in one galaxy (even ME: Andromeda). The term you're looking for is "galactic" or "interstellar". Otherwise a great video, I always like them.

    I would also think there would be a strong social pressure to support and guide those around you. That if you think someone is going in the wrong direction you make them aware of it or maybe alert a superior if he refuses to listen.

    "Military-industrial complex" actually was meant as a negative thing. It refers to the fact that most weapon manufacturers are private companies who have an incentive to encourage war for the sake of selling weapons and many often have a complete monopoly on those weapons.

    Great video as always. Please do a segment on the Weyland-Yutani corporation rival Seegson Corporation from the game Alien: Isolation please? Thank you. Also Could you consider doing a video on "The Rage" from the Alien versus Predator books that focus on the "Rage War". The "Rage War" involved android generals leading armies of "controlled" Xenomorphs against both the Yautja and Human worlds. "The Rage" itself was made up of a group of humans who had acquired advanced scientific knowledge that allowed them to not only master faster than light travel and more advanced ship design and other technological advances but also gained knowledge of how to control Xenomorphs and weaponized them
