I know it's a late reaction, but the other team did plenty of useless stuff as well (the drawing, for example). You can't code for 24 hours a day. You need distractions. I don't think JonTron was that bad here
Well between Jon's teammates they have 22 years combined experience and over 30 game jams versus a handful of assholes from Newgrounds. Jon's team needed the handicap to make it fair.

I have a huge appreciation for Chris as a person. He’s an extremely talented dude who has an incredibly tame ego without sounding self-deprecative. This guy is great at music, 3D modeling, artistry, and is one of the funniest people on TH-cam. His enthusiasm is clearly in everything he puts out there, and suffice to say I am pumped for Bowlbo, his upcoming game. I rarely throw something like this around, but Chris O’Neil is an inspiration to me.
Chris has bowlbo in the works and ding dong and Julian are working on their own game bippy. So all of the original oney plays guys have a games that are looking very good.
I think the best part about him is his sense of humor; it might sound mean-spirited at first glance but it's how you knows he likes something or someone. He could say the worst thing and you know he doesn't mean a word of it. It's why I laugh at all his autism jokes while being an autistic person.
I have to admit, I'm hard on the people I like most because they need that criticism. This video was definitely a step ahead from what I expected and I liked it. That being said, I still think Jon's game reviews are a little more entertaining. Just a little.

Jon cheated by having another person do his makeup for the FMV scenes and probably had somebody else edit them together. By the rules he should have did all the FMV filming himself.
2salzig2spucknapp each team had two programmers and an artist. Jon was the artist of his team. Chris O’Neal was the artist of his team. If you noticed, he doesn’t know how to code and was just doing modeling and drawing while the two others were coding.
I suspect if Jon's team had won, they would have been accused of favoritism since it's Jon's channel and Jon was the host lol (albeit at the last minute)

Returning to this video after seeing the ManyKudos video, I had no idea the behind the scenes stuff before this. I felt that this was an out of place video for Jon’s channel, despite being very entertaining. But now having a better view of the disastrous attempt prior to this, I can understand why you’d all want to have a more sincere production over a game jam.
Yes! The context of the disastrous Mountain Dew Game Jam is essential. Jon's speech at the beginning about how this is a genuine experience really hits different after learning about that tragedy.
It also makes the guinea pig race even more entertaining since it seems to be a jab at the stupid challenges that were supposed to be in the mountain dew game jam.

As a game developer myself, I would thoroughly enjoy seeing more Game Jams from Jontron. Game Jams are so dramatic and competitive that you could legitimatly make an entire show based around them. Also I really felt for team Gum drop when they were having issues with their build because of a single value within their script that was giving them trouble, thats stuff is incredibly frustrating and im surprised they managed to stay composed while being filmed.
Team Gumdrop's project has game breaking bugs, the world seems underdeveloped, camera placement can feel out of control, the graphics can be underwhelming, hit detection can be weird, and the character just doesn't always seem to move the way you want him to 9/10 - It has a little something for everyone!

This needs to be a series, please please don't let this be a one off thing. This is soooo good, so good that i would beg for more. This is the best video since flex tape, but this has one thing over flex tape, and that's that you can keep this fresh a lot longer through multiple installments. This is very well suited to an episodic format, so I really hope that you're considering making more.

As a game developer myself, I would thoroughly enjoy seeing more Game Jams from Jontron. Game Jams are so dramatic and competitive that you could legitimatly make an entire show based around them.
Also I really felt for team Gum drop when they were having issues with their build because of a single value within their script that was giving them trouble, thats stuff is incredibly frustrating and im surprised they managed to stay composed while being filmed.
I think Jon just edited out all (some) of our swearing. I STILL CAN'T BELIEVE I fixed the damn issue with TWENTY MINUTES LEFT.

Team Gumdrop's project has game breaking bugs, the world seems underdeveloped, camera placement can feel out of control, the graphics can be underwhelming, hit detection can be weird, and the character just doesn't always seem to move the way you want him to
9/10 - It has a little something for everyone!

This needs to be a series, please please don't let this be a one off thing. This is soooo good, so good that i would beg for more. This is the best video since flex tape, but this has one thing over flex tape, and that's that you can keep this fresh a lot longer through multiple installments. This is very well suited to an episodic format, so I really hope that you're considering making more.

Yeah... They did a good job, but their game wasn't even close to their prompt or the quality of the first team. It definitively feel like the judges were terrible.
