I equipped all 3 of my daughters with a minitool and a full sized tool. My youngest has a dime. And it helped her tremendously in being able to craft. She has fysical issues, espacially with her hands. And this little gem, makes thing possible for her! I rotate my own dime on my Keychain.

I have had a dime for more years than I can remember. It’s beat to hell now but it still works great! Given it’s price relative to the competition, it’s one of the better choices. I would love to see a dime 2.0 with slight improvements. It would be a good addition.

Dime 2.0 with better steel, better file and a 1/4 bit adapter would be insanely cool. They could replace the blase for a decent file and make it travel friendly. Maybe include a big spacer so customers who want to can remove the box cutter to make it travel friendly.

@@crux314 Amen… if it was made with better steel it’d be amazing. I broke three of these. One had a rivet snap as I was trying to loosen a screw. The second, a rivet snapped when I was just using the package opener on a box. The third, the pliers bent and jammed the tool open.
      Amazing concept, awful execution.

I have a lot of experience with the Gerber Dime. About 6 years as it is right now part of my EDC. On mine the spring for the scissors and one of the springs from the pliers both broke. The spring from the scissors broke very soon. The one from the pliers took more time. The key ring also broke/bent as it snagged on the fabric of my clothes. People would be surprised on how many things you can fix around the house with this tiny tool. It's no substitute for a full size multitool by any means but you can do a lot.

A few months ago I was looking into the light duty MT's. It was between the Dime, Squirt, and Style CS. I chose the Squirt mainly because of the file size and I did not need the cap lifter. It has performed superb when needed and rides in my backpack as a secondary pair of small pliers to the on body carry of a SOG PowerPint.

Wonderful insight into this compact tool. I just picked up a Dime and I had no idea that Gerber has been marketing this tool for more than a decade already. My other multitools are all primarily Leatherman and the odd Swiss army knife. The compact dimensions and affordable price point was a big deciding factor I choose as a tool to go with my car key.

I’ve had my dime for years. Works great for my needs. This is not a heavy duty tool. Pliers work great for small office tasks and small parts on the machines out in the shop. Scissors and tweezers are great for my beard. Cap lifter gets plenty of use in summer and package opener works great. If I need a heavy duty tool my leatherman is in my backpack.

Bottle opener and tweezers are game savers. Also I use the package opener way more often than I thought I would. That being said I already broke my first pair within 6 months of owning it. Only really used the plyers for removing splinters and the internal spring piece in the handle broke on me one day when I went to open the pliers.

When I had the dime I used it for a lot of tasks that needed more than the tweezers of any of my sak's , anything to do with tying and finishing paracord lanyards, the small side of the plier tip was really good for pulling the ends of the paracord through and then mushrooming the ends after burning them.
I have the sog powerlitre now and that does the same things in a larger more robust tool.
My son was always playing with the dime so I gave it to him as a starter multitool.

I love a mini-tool like this, but I found the dime mostly unusable (I still have it in storage somewhere). The only mini-tool i've found with usable pliers is the SOG power pint, which lives in my EDC/work bag. The SOG is pretty excellent all around, actually, most all of its tools are quite usable. The little leatherman micra with scissors instead of pliers was pretty good too, the scissors were quite robust.

I just bought a brand new Dime for $14.99 it’s a great little tool. You can use the the Gerber Tool Kit with it giving you full size Philips and Flat Tip bits. I also have the Vise, Clutch, Mini Suspension, Shortcut, Splice and Curve you can use the Gerber Tool Kit with all of them. With them you get four plier heads, two sizers and the Curve with four blades and bottle opener. The Gerber Bit Kit works with all of them plus the Leatherman Style CS and Leatherman Skeletool. The only bad thing is that only one locks 🔒 the smallest one the Curve 😂.

Not being able to carry a huge multi tool in high school I used this for pretty much my 4 years of highchool daily. Especially mostly for a nail cleaner but when I needed a multi tool it was great. Pliers are not a strong point bc of how much play there is. But other than that amazing tool. Since high school I keep it on my keychain and it’s a great keychain edc. Use it everyday for the pull cutter

I have a Dime and think in the same line, it will do. Not worried about damaging or losing it, sharp blade when I need to without being threatening in the office space. I miss the file, so I usually also have a victorinox classic on me, that way have a much better pair of scissors and a decent nail file.

The package opener is probably the number one used feature of this tool, by far. Also, some one told me that the crappy scissors works better for left-handed use and he was right. I sharpened the scissor blades with a sharpening rod and use it left handed and it works well now. The blade is just for emergency use since most people that EDC have a dedicated pocket knife. I have these in two first aid kits and in one EDC Cargo pocket pouch when I go hiking.

So my 'dime' cents. I'll take the Dime over the Leatherman Style PS any day. For a couple reasons. What you said about the bottle opener, spot on. I find the Leatherman one a little more cumbersome. But, the leatherman philips screwdriver is flimsy, weak, and trash. I don't know how you're supposed to get any tension with that without breaking it. I broke mine within the first month.
You shpuld know your point about the blade has been answered. I use the gerber dine travel and I've been through the airport without on more than one occasion. The file you don't like, well the blade is replaced by a dedicated file. The package opener blade is replaced by a zipper pull. Handy for broken luggage zippers. I think it's great. Awesome review. Take care

I'll say this re: the bottle opener not being a tool: I take your point in a general sense, but you can chew through a branch just the same way you can open a bottle with a carrot. Does that mean a saw isn't a tool? The whole point of a tool is that it makes your life a bit easier.

I have 2 dime together with an LM Skeletool CS. The dime has good size with average but handy features. The thing I like from it is the package opener. The CS has good size scissors but does not retain sharpness in the long run. My go to edc is a Victorinox manager for having great tiny scissors ✂️ and a pen. I would love to have an LM Skeletool PS in my collections soon if ever.
Overall for me Victorinox Manager=CS LM->Gerber Dime value for money wise.

I am not a big multitool guy, and even I got the Dime. It was a gift though, and I have no "dealbreaking" issues with it so far. I sharpened up the small blade, which can be expected, the little file on the small flathead screwdriver is for the ass (since it is coated and doesn't grip onto anything really), and the tweezers are not even enough to be considered pleasant to use. Other than that it is a quite good backup that needs almost no space at all. It is even light enough for me to consider clipping it to my keys, where my Nitecore Tiki and my Lil' Friend Arrowhead from Böker Magnum are also attached to.
I mostly used its bottle opener, or cap lifter as they say, so I wouldn't mark my lighter or my folding knife.
I think I will attach it to my keys now and see how I like it, I assume it will be fine, and if I don't like it I will edit this comment!

I can open any beer bottle with any disposable lighter without damaging the lighter. Once you understand how to apply the leverage in the right place/direction almost anything with a right angle edge can work.
Edit: The tools on my Leatherman Wingman ordered by most used:
    - Scissors (toe nails and other random stuff)
    - Package/box opener (Amazon/eBay deliveries etc)
    - Pliers (for pulling gear cable and shaping brake pad split-pins on my mountain bike)
    - Knife (very occasionally I need a knife for something other than eating)
    - The rest (I'd happily forego for a full sized bit driver)

If you come up with a pocketclip for the Gerber dime or decide to modify it, that would be huge. I don't really care for keychain knives as big things just get caught on stuff on a keychain. The dime would fit well in the 5th pocket or on a backpack strap if it had a pocket clip though. Maybe making a single sided plierless multitool with the bottle opener end. Would be great dedicated bottle opener with package opener

I have all the little Leatherman’s (Micra, Squirt, Style, etc., etc..) but back in the late 90’s, when my brother got married, all the groomsmen gifts were a Gerber Shortcut… I’m gonna say its more of Gerber’s answer to the Micra, than it is the Dime’s predecessor… ‘cause it’s scissor based instead of plier based. But it wound up being a fairly decent pocket or key ring sized tool, or at least as good as tiny tools can be. Not counting Leatherman’s, of course.

These are great but I had one pair one which the threads for one of the fasteners (the one on the scissors side/end of the tool), stripped out. Now the scissors aren’t fully held in and it can’t be fixed because the thread is TINY.
Hopefully I just got a fluke. Good little tool otherwise.
I keep my second one in my motorcycle tool roll. Perfect for places where you have minimal space.

I am from Norway and i haven't seen others or used a bottle opener myself other than on a wine cork (different kind of bottle opener i know but still) i have wondered for year if English speaking EDC/survival "specialists" on youtube that know how to build snaretraps and make fires and shelters in a million different ways can't open a bottle with out a bottle opener..¿! So every tool/knife producer out there: USE THE SPACE FOR SOMETHING ACTUALLY USEFUL, we can all open a bottle i other ways!

I don’t know, I never really have a problem using a blade as my package opener. In other words, if you had this and it did not have the package opener, and you had a package to open, what would you do? You’d use the blade, right? But, if you only had the package opener and you wanted to slice something, the package opener would be kind of awkward and difficult. It’s a matter of functionality. At least with this, you have both options. I just wish they could have given a real 3D Phillips and a more substantial scissors. Then it would be a monster. I’d rather they lose the bottle opener. I don’t drink anything that needs a cap to be pried off. And if I did, I would use the screwdriver if I had nothing else.

The Dime is cool for what it is, no hate but I’d just never buy it over the Style PS. That bit exchanger mod plus higher quality in general just makes it far and away the best multi tool for its size IMO. Only downside is no knife blade but I carry a Spyderco for knife stuff anyway.
I will say the little box cutter tool on the Dime is very nice.
    Thanks for the vid!

Have mixed feelings about my Dime but appreciate it a lot. It's a great first tool for kids or a great stocking stuffer!
    PROS:
    - cheap!
    - decent blade for what it is lol
    - large flathead compared to one's on a SAK Manager/Rambler
    - can be disassembled so has mod potential!
    - fantastic package opener
    - pliers are good for small hobby electronics (i.e. bending wires)
    - tweezers are cool
    CONS:
    - wire cutters are a joke
    - file is ok for nails but it's kinda gimmicky (Squirt PS4 is one of the few small multitools with a REAL file)
    - scissors could be better
    - steel is soft, so it will break easily if pliers are used too hard
    - coating at base of pliers rubs off quickly due to friction when opening pliers
A bit holder instead of the bottle opener woulda been KILLER.
All this said, it's probably a better investment to get a used Squirt PS4 for $25-$35 off eBay... except they can't be disassembled :(

It's a great tool but much like the PS4 the bulk from having tools outboard and the thinned out brittle pliers keeps me from actually taking these tools with me. Those $5/giveaway plier-type micra clones make more sense with beefier pliers and more tools, just because they kept them inboard.

Get rid of the package opener (the knife can do double duty), replace it with a full size Phillips driver (and fix the horrible file on it), then lengthen the Flathead driver. Then it would be more useful, the file is useless as-is though, probably the worst file I have ever seen.

I want to like the Dime. It looks cool, has some good functions, but the scissors are a major let down. They're also left hand orientation, too. The grind isn't as fine as Victorinox so they are even worse when trying to use for finger nail cutting. Dime with 58mm Victorinox scissors would be pretty good, even the nail file. Maybe that's something you could try as a mod? The file on mine would struggle to cut melted butter. The tweezers also not up to snuff with Vic. It was half the price of the Squirt when I bought it, though. I carried it for about a year, opened a coconut in the Cook Islands, so it's not completely worthless!

    • @simonh6371
      @simonh6371 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The scissors on the Squirt too are pretty piss poor, there is so much blade play that finer materials like thin plastic (of shopping bags for example) and cotton thread wedges between them rather than being cut, and of course they won't cut thicker material like thick cardboard, paracord etc. To add insult to injury the spring on mine broke a couple of weeks ago and looking on Leatherman's website it appears that if I send them in under warranty, they'll send me a Micra back instead, which isn't the same type of tool imo. Rather have a Style PS although the scissors on that are probably crap too.

@@robbowman5857 If they redesigned it, considering that the pliers on 91mm Vics like Deluxe Tinker, Swisschamp etc. are equivalent to the Squirt/Style PS pliers in size. I've often thought how cool it would be if they made a Juice format multitool, with a decent little pliers head enclosed by 2 folding handles in the form of 93mm alox models. The same could be done in 58mm format but I don't think it's going to happen soon.

I bought this because I wanted a very light multitool to take with me when hiking. I wanted a light pair of pliers for my ultralight fly fishing set up and I've had zippers mess up on me in the field and didn't have anything to fix then... honestly speaking I shouldn't have been such a gram weenie and just spent the extra $ on a SOG PowerPint and I would have had a tool that also would be useful for other applications and as a daily EDC. The dime as it stands is just a dedicated package opener and bottle opener on my computer desk. Not sure I even trust it in the field after seeing it just self destruct. I do wish Gerber would come back to this tool, improve on it a bit and remarket it towards fellow gram wienies. They need a model that has a better pair of scissors, remove the knife because the package opener works better, remove the bottle opener for weight saving, improve the internal structure of the pliers and make them a hair thicker, allow us to completely remove the keychain and include a deep carry pocket clip for your watch pocket. Move the screwdrivers internally because having them on the outside with the aluminum scales just makes them nearly useless, also make the screwdrivers a hair thicker... That would be the move that makes sense and I feel would sell like hotcakes.
