Skeletool is my EDC. Was always a traditional Swiss Army knife until one bike camping trip when broke a brake cable in the middle of no where. In the 90’s while closing barbs on fish hooks, a new Gerber was used until the pliers broke in two. Warranty was denied because I didn’t have both pieces, I explained warranty wasn’t needed if the second part wasn’t at the bottom of a lake. Never again. I once owned the Surge, had to return because of weight, it was just to much for anything other than a tool bag.

Great idea on the option of cutting down the tool to make it more in line with the squirt

The style ps has a pretty huge pinch point right on the handle. And I also found it wanted to slip backwards out of my hand because of the harsh curved V shape.
I just carry a knipex and a small Victorinox. Though I'd really like to make a custom Victorinox so that the tools fit my needs better.

I carry a Knipex and a Vic Swisschamp, but I'm looking to get the Minichamp Alox as an alternative smaller/lighter carry, but I'll carry a Spyderco with both of them too. There are some great Victorinox customs out there but they are pricey. Check out the Spydernox customs (a Spydie blade in a Vic) on the channel fit to survive.

I carried a Micra for a long time, and then found the Style CS and carried that for a long time. If you carry some mini Cobras you don’t need the pliers, and the other tools are accessible on the outside unlike the Micra. If you took off the carabiner, which I didn’t mind cuz it’s a great fidget thingy, but that would be a nice little unit.

Sorry, the Gerber Dime is not a viable alternative to the PS4, build quality and performance are significantly inferior. I really wanted to like it as it incorporates tweezers and package opener, but the pliers are so weak that the cutters struggle to cut through even slim 6 inch zip ties, they just flex apart

    • @barrysuss4421
      @barrysuss4421 ปีที่แล้ว

I found the PS4 pliers just as bad as the Dime. Had a Dime years ago and the pliers bent (first time using them) from trying to loosen a small bolt on a vehicle. Just bent the pliers on the PS4 (the first time using them) trying to bend back some sheet metal on a frame. Neither situations were/or should have been too strenuous for the tool.

Off topic but kind of related... with a file, vise & a little time, you can often 'dress' the jaw ends of dime store grade slip joint pliers to near tweezer (or occasionally even tweezer) like performance; and/or outright modify them for some special application. Along with a pivot adjustment, the cutters can often be improved with the file while your at it.

My alternative to the LM Squirt is a bit unorthodox but it makes more sense than comparing it to a 58mm Victorinox with no pliers which costs half or less what the Squirt costs...the Victorinox Handyman. It actually costs less than what the Squirt costs where I am. I know it's not really a keychain tool like the Squirt but I always carried mine in my 5th pocket anyway (until the scissors broke) and a Handyman fits in there no problem, in fact I carry my Swisschamp in my 5th pocket no problem. The Vic pliers head is about the same size as the one on the Squirt but my experience is that they are way better because when in use the whole tool fills your hand giving you more control, reach and leverage. If the Handyman is more expensive than the Squirt where you are then the Tinker Deluxe is a good alternative.

Travel outside the U.S. and you will encounter pop-top bottles.
I have gotten away from these tools.
The last one I bought was the Leatherman charge ti.
I used it when I was in the service but now I carry a Knipex or Klien pliers for my job and have a little tool bag close by. I would rather have a quality tool for the job over an okay tool that may strip out a screw or something of the like.
Anyways, great video. Keep em coming.

    • @simonh6371

@@benjaminjwilson6694 Do you mean the 10 inch one? I'm in the UK so Klein (a US brand) is pretty rare over here, I can only find the 10 inch one over here. Looks very good. But at the moment I'm more into the pocketable EDC tools which fulfil a number of purposes. I like the Knipex Cobra XS because of the compact size and the fact that I can use it for a number of purposes, as a precision pliers, adjustable wrench and even pry bar, as well as bottle opener which I mentioned. For purely functioning as an adjustable wrench I'd be better off with the Knipex Pliers Wrench which has those smooth jaws instead of the teeth I know. The Klein D53010 has both options which is very versatile but obviously it's too big for pocket carry. However I do plan on buying a van later on this year (to convert into a camper) and that Klein plier wrench could be very good to have in an onboard tool kit. It's only £10 (12 bucks) more expensive than the tiny Knipex Pliers Wrench. Thanks for the heads up!

I am surprised the Gerber Vise isn't more popular. I like the micro driver and the fact the bottle opener is retractable and it doubled as the slotted driver. I just wish it had the Dimes scales, slimmer like the Dime, and the Dime package opener instead of the serrated blade, even though I like it. Having the 3 drivers and the fact the bottle opener isn't stuck on the outside of the tool, making the Vise shorter, makes me carry the Vise more than my Dime.

Not as a new replacement model, it's been out for decades. But if you send your Squirt in for warranty (normally because of broken scissor springs) they send you a Micra back as a replacement so it is a replacement in that sense of the word.

the Gerber dime has been a part of my fly fishing tackle for a long time. For that purpose, it has been great. For use as a tool, it fared not so great, and one use of the pliers to loosen a M10 bolt bent the spine of the pliers and it needed replacing. For a tool, I'd suck up the extra weight and size and carry a Wave, but for light stuff I do recommend the dime.

And the only small multitool Victorinox makes is the jetsetter unless they make another 58mm that's not a pocket knife.
The jetsetter is great, but it has no flat blade driver and of course no pliers.
