    I really cringed at the Bono part. Him repeating "Jesus, Jew, Mohammed" just seemed like he had no idea of Judaism. He didn't know the major prophet of the Jews, so he just said Jew instead. Generation Cinema To me, it's the equivalent of when someone says they are colour-blind when it comes to someone's race. It's great you want even to view each other as equals, but in reality, you are keeping minorities in under-privileged situations. You need to recognize racial disparities in order to fix it. Saying "can't we just all get along" is telling people to shut up about their problems because it is seen as stirring up the peace.
      This is why I have a problem with catchphrase based solutions. More often than not, it's hurting the under-privilege and helping the privilege.
      This is coming from a guy who makes fun of the SJW mentality. However, this is one area I believe they are right.

    Yeah I prefer the original design. The point was very clear and specific as it was targeting the 3 abrahamic religions who have been well lets face it, killing each other since whoever had the bright idea to come up with those beliefs in the first place. The newer version mucks it up and it looks a bit too jumbled. Still a good message though.

    • @dontaskwilltell6362

      The fact each religion has been coexisting makes this almost unnecessary. People need to learn that you can't force people to be on board with everything so these campaigns are useless. If they kill each other off who really cares? After all each religion was piggy backed off of each other to become dominant. And no I am definitely not an atheist nor a theist.

      "If they kill each other off who really cares?"
      A lot of people care. We are talking about other human beings here. Families torn apart because of a difference in faith. And in the case of the Abrahamic faiths, a difference in who is the most notable prophet. The same god, three different names. Three different names that have torn apart families for centuries. Religion is not going to be something that goes away (and if we get into that debacle we must ask if the eradication of religion would necessarily be a good thing. Whilst religion has been a justification of war, generally the religious reasons have merely been a ruse for political or financial reasons) but we can try to get people to get along. To get families from not being torn apart.
      So who cares? Probably the families that would fall victim to being torn apart if we don't learn to accept one another for our differences. But it's easy to say we shouldn't care when it isn't your family that might be one of the victims.
      I recommend you check out the poem "First they came" by Frank Niemoller.

      I think that's called neoliberalism. Where any type of injustice or inequality is just used as an opportunity to manufacture products and sell to exploit people's need to feel as if they are making a change. Ultimately they perpetuate the inequality by wanting to "buy" change

      Then who designed your phone?
      Or your desktop?
      That book over there?
      Who constructed the house you live in? Who whatever statues and monuments your city has?
      Who draws comics and graphic novels?
      And who writes them?
      Who makes the illustrations to help explain things better?
      Who makes the movies you watch?
      The music you listen to?
      Or even that advert you had to watch?
      Who wrote any interesting book or series you might have watched
      Yep, artists.
      And that's not all that they do and it doesn't even approach what influence the works of the long dead as well as the still alive have on the economy, the culture, public perception and just overall the live of the people.
      True, art isn't the only influence, but it's not as useless as it may seem at first and it doesn't take too much knowledge about the history of art (be it written, drawn, as music, dance, what have you) to know that it was-and is-to see that the presumption of inutility isn't justified in the slightest.

      us as conscious beings that create barriers in our minds that aren't limited to religion but also include nations race gender. I feel that by broadening the scope with the addition of more symbols it suggests that we should be giving attention to how we feel/think and how this shapes how we view others and their cultures.
      An analogy would be trying to treat the individual barriers is very important and needs to be done but is like treating the symptoms. Where as looking at ourselves and trying to change how we think is more like treating the disease.

    • @rurdywyne
      @rurdywyne 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I think the most critical part about the new coexist compared to the original is that it adds a peace sign and the gender e. Adding to it, there is technically only supposed to be religious symbols on there from the original context.
      The additional context is still relevant on its own, especially in the west, promoting peace for lifestyle choice. The context changes from one of religious coexistence to a more general harmony.
      The original represented three religions that have seen strife for centuries, even if it wasn't all inclusive, religion was the focus. I don't think the message is diluted from adding more either. They both have their place.

I know it sounds silly. We should be able to coexist and be kind to each other. But his original work makes much more sense. It sends a specific message about conflict in the Middle East. His work is so much better than that dumb bumper sticker.

    • @quill9918

    • @nathanielgaffney2230
      @nathanielgaffney2230 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is mostly correct. Copyright isn't limited to anything that uses words. The requirements for a valid copyright are 1) an original work of authorship; 2) fixed in a tangible medium of expression. That's pretty much it. There used to be formalities required by the law, but not anymore. Your copyright attaches as soon as those requirements are met.
      17 USC sec. 102(a) provides a non-exhaustive list of copyrightable subject matter, and includes: literary works, musical works, dramatic works, pantomimes and choreographic works, pictorial, graphic, and sculptural works, motion pictures and other audiovisual works, sound recordings, and architectural works.

No one but the author can claim copyright to the work, unless the author grants rights to others in a written agreement (such as to the author's publisher or record company). Usually, you can tell who the author of a work is -- the person who created it."

      "It wasn't until the Ottoman Empire that the crescent moon and star became affiliated with the Muslim world. When the Turks conquered Constantinople (Istanbul) in 1453, they adopted the city's existing flag and symbol. Legend holds that the founder of the Ottoman Empire, Osman, had a dream in which the crescent moon stretched from one end of the earth to the other. Taking this as a good omen, he chose to keep the crescent and make it the symbol of his dynasty. There is speculation that the five points on the star represent the five pillars of Islam, but this is pure conjecture. The five points were not standard on the Ottoman flags, and are still not standard on flags used in the Muslim world today."
      P.S. Get your facts straight. It's used today by Muslim countries, but that's not the same as calling it the symbol of Islam, like the star of David is the symbol of Judaism.

      You say that now because Christianity is the largest and most powerful religion - so you can afford to be magnanimous. But Islam will very soon take over and become the largest world religion. When that happens and they start to use their size to influence law and culture will your attitude remain the same?

    I don’t see how the symbols are nonsensical like this Vox video claims. If the symbols are inaccurate, then that would be a problem, but what’s wrong with a more inclusive design?
    And apparently the big problem was that the musician used a trademarked design, not the fact that they wore religious symbols on their forehead.
    Wow, Vox. Wow.

    • @Holsonfront

      Yeah that part of the video didn't really have a cogent argument. "Be careful when you change something because you will make it worse than the original" ... so everything you do is 100% perfect the first time? The changed symbol is meant to be more meme-worthy and ideologically diverse, in both these respects it succeeds.

    • @AngryKittens
      @AngryKittens 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Because they're the ones who need it the most. LOL Pretty much all other religions have learned to coexist centuries ago. Mostly because most of them are polytheistic or universalist by default.
