Here are a few tips I would have for you: get a suede cleaner and go over the suede and "brush" it back out with a plastic bristle brush. Then grab a pet carpet steam cleaner and steam clean the fabric. After all of this dries, the paint should apply much better. As you coat the seat, use a softer plastic brush to work the paint into the fabric better. After you're finished and the seat is dry, go over the fabric one last time with a brush to bring back the "Soft" feel to the fabric. This worked VERY well on my carpet. I had problems with the Duplicolor coming off after it rained and the fabric got wet. Therefore maybe using shoe waterproofer might not be a bad idea on the coated seats.
simply spray fabric paint is much better than the duplicolor stuff imo. bristle in the paint is key while coating or use gloves and lightly massage it in
Youre supposed to do one direction as you are spraying. .let it dry..take a brush to it to separate the fibers.. then do the next coat three opposite direction..just a bit of advice!!
When you said "then do the next coat three opposite direction" do you mean after you do the first coat then following 3 coats should be opposite in the "same direction" ? or do you mean do 3 separate coats in opposite direction as you brush the fibers to one side and then to the other side?
When I used to work in recon, we would actually lightly brush the fibers as we were spraying it. You would do very light coats brushing it back and forth very lightly as you were going. Especially if you were spraying carpet or anything with heavy fibers to ensure paint fully saturated the fibers, and most importantly like you said, it separates the fibers so that it doesn't have a stiff painted feel when it dries. It will still feel like carpet or cloth, and not hard or crusty feeling.
Definite like. Kept it short and to the point. Love that you left in the F ups, bc we all makem’. And you’re critical of your own work. This is an honest video and I wish there were more like it. I’m sure you’ve tried this but in case you haven’t, try taking a stiff brush and and brushing the hell out of the places that didn’t blend. I do that when I’m dieing auto carpet. Not only does it help blend but it softens up the places that harden and feel stiff and unnatural. In my experience it lightens up the places that I scrub but it softens the substrate and then you repeat the process. I’m sure there’s a way to get those lines out. The trick that works for me, and this is on automotive carpet, is to brush it with a soft brush while it’s still damp. That really helps even and blend and keeps the nap soft. Some times as with everything there a slight trade off and that’s it not looking as dark as if you didn’t brush it. But they way I see it the second things start rubbing against it that’s going to happen anyway. This way you you stay ahead of it and get the stuff that’s gonna immediately flake off outta the way. I hope this makes sense. And you may have gave already tried this. But in case you haven’t. And again it was on carpet soooo... you ask for opinions. Even though this was more like advice. I’m curious to see if it helps myself. So worse case scenario is it’s a little litghter but no lines. You tell me.
Considering your seats have the center portion that shows a bit lighter, it would have been interesting to see an attempt at replicating the Bride gradation pattern by masking from the top down between coats.
Omgg thank you so much for this video. I now feel confident with painting my car seats. Thanks for also testing with a white shirt. I was going to google how that turned out but you covered that subject as well. This is going to save me so much money because I was going to purchase seat covers and that was running me anywhere from $60-150 for the set I was looking for. I think that your seat turned out great and it def looks better than it did before. It's not perfect but honestly it's a DIY so I believe it's perfect. Thanks again!!!
+Clint Fermin Awesome to hear that you found the video to be helpful! Once the seat is in the car it looks a million times better so as you said its not perfect but it accomplishes its goal.
How well is it holding up? To me that'd be the main issue. I have an 86 Ford truck with swayed buckets that have faded out but the fabric is still good.
I have used that dye on the interior of my 240, i will say even though they say it only needs an hour wait overnight atleast and the dye will settle more and you will get a darker shade of black.
Thanks for the video have to put a seat in my 83 oldsmobile cutlass somebody put buckets in and totally wrecked the interior. We all learned something new today.
You need to brush (soft brush) the cloth between coats so the fiber takes the paint better so yo dont end up with faded areas. It takes time but it does work. Also to prep the cloth it is better to do a deep clean. Most people doenst have equipment but if u can get a vacuum that can be use for water and a pump sprayer and brushes. Take your time and clean it. In my case i use awesome cleaner (cheap) but it works on car interior great and it doesnt leave odors. 50/50 with warm water and spray the cloth then use a drill with brush for furniture and keep it wet. After that vacuum it and let it dry. Once its cleaned and dried then start this process of painting and brushing. You will see the diference!
The most nearest to the reality of "DIY". At least we know that Duplicolor Vinyl & Fabric Paint capabilities on the fabric car seat. Would try it though. Thanks for the sharing.
That gray sheen was created by armpit sweat. The ammonia from the sweat has an acidic characteristic which will eat suede like it does to an old steering wheel. The only solution for that is to eat less potato chips.
Nice Duster in the background. I'm actually watching this video cause I'm replacing the stock bench seat in my 1970 Dart with 2005 chrysler sebring convertible seats. I need to paint them black.
Thinking this might be the way to go for the headliner and visors, OEM black is not an option on the car I have in the upper half but all interior is black from the shoulder area down. Flocking the dash, door panels, and A,B,C pillars black along with this would get the interior where I want. Thanks for the Idea and keep the vid's coming along with these DIY's!
Id have hit that middle section with a very light sandpaper to loosen the fibers up and then hit it again. It doesn't need to match the driver's seat since it's completely different. That's Lemonade from Lemons.
I’ve been thinking about doing this but I’m worried it would major the fabric stiff and crunchy. I wonder if I could use a like hand held carpet cleaner on it afterwards (like give it a day or two to set and then carpet clean it)
I am aiming to do this with my 2008 Mazda 6, Im customizing the interior to be all black as opposed too the standard khaki as i Just prefer black over that coloration
it may not be a grand-slam but def a triple. looks much better and IF anyone asks it's an interesting story, even for non car people. Do they really exist?!?? By the way like the channel vary much can't wait to see what you guys do with your 930 turbo. The Ass2000 & project grip S-14 are what got me hooked. Also liked the E-rod LS-3 Nissan 240 build story on your site. Vary similar to Carlos Logs build for motor tend channel . But there is a behind the scenes connection come to find out.
roger depew Thanks Roger! I'm pretty much dieing to get started on the 930 turbo but I first have to finish the 240, FRS and S2000 before I even start thinking about the Porsche. Just too many projects on the go! I helped Carlos out in a few ways with his build, we used to work in the same building and same company. They're great cars and the V8 rumble isnt so bad either.
Of coarse you realize am extremely jealous of the fact you get to build your cars as part of your job;.as Mike Finnigan (of HotRod's RoadKill ) would say "best day at work ever". Just wanted to say thanks for a great channel and web site. You guys rock/ are the men. Keep it coming. you guys are doing a simply awsome job. I know that word is way over worked but it fits perfectly here. So there I said it
roger depew We definitely can't complain about the daily grind, well only when it's below freezing here but right now we're loving almost every minute of it! And thanks again, we really appreciate the support and kind words.
Could of used like paint they use for suede sneakers mix with gac-900 50/50 mix and then use a angelus metal brush to give it the texture back. They even sell it by the gallon.
Suede is a difficult material to do anything with. I have seen this used before with varying degrees of success. I would say this is on the lower end of the success scale, but at least you coated it fairly evenly. I've seen worse. And really, by the time its in there, it looks just fine. That streak will probably drive you nuts every time you see it though.
I understand you had some flaws and that it wasn't perfect, that doesn't concern me. What I really want to know is how long did it hold up, and there was any residual trouble like black showing up on the clothes of people who sat in the passenger seat, etc.
Nice I like that you included mess ups. Shows that people making videos with the know how we seek can make mistakes as well! Have you tried dying it to see if it remedies the middle line left?
The middle issue isnt from the dye rather the way I let it dry so I'd have to bleach the fabric to remove the dye then re-dye it. Inside the car you can't notice it so I've just left as is.
I probably would of tested it on a cheaper seat, maybe the stock s14 seats rather than do a first go on the r32 seats which are actually quite pricey. I believe those go for at least 300+ a seat. Ive seen nismo ones go for 1200 a set before.
A little over 2 years and how is it standing up . other spray dies come off when wet or just time has the duplica been good? I have done this befor and looking for a good product.
This came out great! Do I have to remove the seats? Like I would put a blower or something on the truck? I have 3 rows & I do not want to break all the plastic parts?
Love your s14. Looks really nice. Can't wait to see you take her to the track. :) Seat wasn't all that bad tho. Considering how it looked before it's a win for sure. Maybe not in the feel deparment, but at least it looks better.
Appreciate the vid. Question. On cloth do the seats feel different? Like coated with plastic or something. Cause this isn't dying it right its just painting over it. Have you used dye? I'm going to go from a lame tan color to black. Nice shirt btw
Did the paint work on the fabric seats for you? I was thinking about painting mine just temporarily till I can afford my racing seats cuz the seat covers suck.
I know this video is old buttt do you have any tips or anything you recommend after a few years or so on painting black suede seats? I’m trying to dye my recaros in my integra that turned blueish as well and I can’t seem to find any info or reccomendations on dye
looks good! but how long does it last? and how long have u used it for that u can say its safe after so many months and wont stain clothes..thank for video!
Ive been watching a lot of videos to compare techniques people have used to tackle this project. I was wondering if you considered rubbing in the paint with your hand or a soft/medium brush, would that have made a difference in your exploration in this project? and applying lighter layers as you massage the product into the chair would give you a better feel and aesthetic quality. i know you mentioned that technique was on our own but could your result have been different if you have used this method?
+Nick Jones I dont think rubbing will do much as the paint will always dry to a harder feel. Ive done a bit more reading and suede is not an ideal candidate for painting like this.
Hello all the way from the uk. I personally think the video is a win. you've certainly made the seat look better :) I'm going to be doing this myself on exactly the same seat in the next coming weeks so I had a few questions for you. we can't get dupli color over here but vht do a vinyl dye/paint and from reading it's the same as the dupli color what's your opinion on this? also the zips on the back of the seat. what did you do with them as they are metal I wondered if the paint would make them look funny. unfortunately you didn't show you painting the back haha. and lastly so I don't brake my turning knob. how do you correctly take it off love the videos. Mike
+Mike Foster The VHT paint will be very similar so I think you'll be fine with it. I just painted everything, very few people will ever see the back of the seat so to me it doesnt matter. But for the record, they look completly fine painted black. As for the shift knob, mine is aftermarket so it just screwed right off.
+Speed Academy hi thanks for the quick reply :) I feel ready. hopefully I get the same results. in regards to the shift knob I must of called it the wrong thing haha. what I mean is the thing you broke on the seat in the video whilst removing the trim. what's the correct way to take that off. it almost looked like the was a circlip underneath it
Victor Marchionna It's stiff and doesn't feel great but that's because it hasn't been worn in. I've read once you start using it the fabric breaks in and softens up a bit. For the money this can't be beat. If I had a spare $900 bucks laying around for another Recaro I'd be all over it but until then this painted R32 seat will stay.
These are r32 GTR seats , its pointless trying to restore those. Just pork up the extra money and buy the nismo leather seat covers made specifically for that seat.
Looks pretty clean, I love how you point out the mistakes you run into, not alot of youtubers do that haha. Good Job!
Did my headliner with this stuff. Spent the time and did it right and that was 8 years ago and the headliner still looks amazing!
Awesome! Goes to show that this can and will last.
I say it's a win for the viewers. thanks for making the mistakes for us hehe
+Dc2 Haha, you're welcome.
Pretty cool to me, time saver. Keeps from high dollar upholstery.
+Dc2 2:12 Years of practice
He had the balls to actually post the video despite the mistakes, that doesn't happen on YT very often.
I learned I will not be going this route! Thank u
We learn from mistakes. Thanks for letting us learn from your mistakes, and your honesty!
+Thomas Dell That's our aim. Not everything goes as planned and what better way then have someone else make the mistakes (us) and you learn from them.
i like seeing someone honest about their mistakes. its a good way to learn

+Max Boost Wow, those are all great tips! Thanks so much. If I ever get around to re-doing the seat I'll def take this into consideration.
simply spray fabric paint is much better than the duplicolor stuff imo. bristle in the paint is key while coating or use gloves and lightly massage it in
Really good advice ~ thank you.
It's actually good to see what to and what not to do on DIY videos. It looks way better than before. Great video
Youre supposed to do one direction as you are spraying. .let it dry..take a brush to it to separate the fibers.. then do the next coat three opposite direction..just a bit of advice!!
+Crimroaka jeaze Thanks! Will try that next time.
When you said "then do the next coat three opposite direction" do you mean after you do the first coat then following 3 coats should be opposite in the "same direction" ? or do you mean do 3 separate coats in opposite direction as you brush the fibers to one side and then to the other side?

It will still feel like carpet or cloth, and not hard or crusty feeling.
Any specific type of brush, or hardness of brush?
I going to give it a like .... this is the kind of videos that really show people how to do things and things that people should be aware of.
thanks
Dry clean the seat then shampoo it usually takes out some imperfections caused by the micro fibers in fabric after using fabric seat dye

I did this to the headliner on my Scion tC and it came out pretty good. Texture was kind of more rough than oem but it came out really nice.
When things go wrong is when we really learn! ;) Thanks

I’ve been detailing and doing plenty of dye jobs especially with black for years. Not a total fail looks pretty good. Next time do it inside.
The most nearest to the reality of "DIY". At least we know that Duplicolor Vinyl & Fabric Paint capabilities on the fabric car seat. Would try it though. Thanks for the sharing.
Glad you find it somewhat informative.
Did you try brushing it after? I wonder if you brushed it between layers if it’d look smoother/ even
A fabric steamer with a brush works wonders on bringing dull colored suede back to life!
So funny I have an s14 and was wondering if die paint works to restore seats. Thanks for the vid! I’m gonna give it a go
That gray sheen was created by armpit sweat. The ammonia from the sweat has an acidic characteristic which will eat suede like it does to an old steering wheel. The only solution for that is to eat less potato chips.
Since this video is 4 years old... I would like to know if the color has held up after all this time?
Nice Duster in the background. I'm actually watching this video cause I'm replacing the stock bench seat in my 1970 Dart with 2005 chrysler sebring convertible seats. I need to paint them black.

+lcq4blackstar This would work wonders on headliners and visors where you dont sit or touch them often. Great idea!
The results certainly look encouraging, although I would have expected you to clean the seat properly with a wet / dry extractor before painting.
Simply black. Convertible top dye. Works great.
It For sure looks a lot better than before!
+Do Boy's Garage Thanks! I don't mind it either. Aside from the one stripe it matches the Recaro quite nicely.
I didn’t spray paint. I used roller, they’re came out just perfect the way I want them to look.
i wonder if paint will transfer to clothes when its the summer time and your in for a long a drive. all the moisture must pull some of the dye out?
Its not bad! Looks better than that foul grey and navy mix...
Yeah, on top of that it was faded and grungy looking so this is better than that.
I appreciate you sharing your experiences. Thank you.
I would opt for a matching Recaro for the passenger side. Awesome looks and functionality
Reece Ramsey When I finish the rest of the car and have some spare bucks you know I'll be stuffing a Recaro in there!
I wonder if I could use a like hand held carpet cleaner on it afterwards (like give it a day or two to set and then carpet clean it)
Great video... I feel bad with the couple of screw ups you had but thats good for us to learn :) Thanks
Better me to learn than you all right?! :)
That Recaro looks so good in the 240
Jon Kat which model is it?
Camhin1 Profi SPG
Looks awesome dude don’t worry about it too much buddy I love how it turned out 🤘🤘🤘🤘
use a nail brush and warm soapy water for suede in my experience and keep a hair dryer on hand so it doesn't turn bad
I have a 84 cutlass supreme with pillow top seats was gonna try this on em.
Did the paint affect the texture of the fabric at all? Do the fibers retain there "smooth" to touch feel?
I am aiming to do this with my 2008 Mazda 6, Im customizing the interior to be all black as opposed too the standard khaki as i Just prefer black over that coloration
Use a soap and water detailer next time for cleaning. Afterwards get the correct dye.
Wow I'm so glad I found this! I have been thinking about this now I'll definitely know what too look out for!
Glad we made the mistakes so you wont have to :)
Sand paper might move the fabric grain to a more uniform flow or a stiff metallic brush. It looks a lot better.
Good idea! We'll try that.
leaving the mistake =kudos to you !!! you help other people not do the same thing,a cut above.thanks
Dude awesome video, the amount of times ive been trying to do something and done just the same, mistakes to learn from, great effort
it may not be a grand-slam but def a triple. looks much better and IF anyone asks it's an interesting story, even for non car people. Do they really exist?!??

roger depew We definitely can't complain about the daily grind, well only when it's below freezing here but right now we're loving almost every minute of it! And thanks again, we really appreciate the support and kind words.
Clearly you did not sand (120-300 grit)
between coats, did you?
Could of used like paint they use for suede sneakers mix with gac-900 50/50 mix and then use a angelus metal brush to give it the texture back. They even sell it by the gallon.

how strong did it smell and did the smell fade pretty quick ?
+1 I would love to hear an answer to this question.
Regular spray can smell , wear a mask indoors
Seat looks good take the center wrap in pu leather and look good
I probably would of tested it on a cheaper seat, maybe the stock s14 seats rather than do a first go on the r32 seats which are actually quite pricey. I believe those go for at least 300+ a seat. Ive seen nismo ones go for 1200 a set before.
+Jarom Pollister I bought the set for $300 so it wasn't an expensive risk for me.
A little over 2 years and how is it standing up . other spray dies come off when wet or just time has the duplica been good?
I have done this befor and looking for a good product.
Hey man nice video. I like you point out the fails / mistakes. Thanks for posting. Beware of chili!
This came out great! Do I have to remove the seats? Like I would put a blower or something on the truck? I have 3 rows & I do not want to break all the plastic parts?
try dying the suede because suede hardens went paint interacts with it. use spray paint on leather or any other gentle material
+omg ITSjjaalleenn Yeah, if I had to do it again I would totally die it rather than paint.
+Speed Academy anyways love your video keep it up
if you use a wire brush on the suede it should go back to normal.
I have used this stuff on all parts in my car and it looks great
Seats came out nice, but is that Duster for sale?
Fabrics will contain oils from your skin too which will likely affect the results
Love your s14. Looks really nice. Can't wait to see you take her to the track. :)
Seat wasn't all that bad tho. Considering how it looked before it's a win for sure. Maybe not in the feel deparment, but at least it looks better.
***** Thanks, like you said as long as it somewhat matches the interior Im happy with it. Plus, I learned some valuable lessons doing this job haha.
Speed Academy
Indeed, next time it will be better for sure. :)
Appreciate the vid. Question. On cloth do the seats feel different? Like coated with plastic or something. Cause this isn't dying it right its just painting over it. Have you used dye? I'm going to go from a lame tan color to black. Nice shirt btw
I think it's a win nice job looks good
Good job looks great, looks black to me.😊
Not bad, wish you would of painted the center part a slightly lighter colour.
Did the paint work on the fabric seats for you? I was thinking about painting mine just temporarily till I can afford my racing seats cuz the seat covers suck.
Try Sem dye, its seems to be a better product, but the cost is a bit higher.
Thanks for the tip. I wouldnt mind spending more if the results were better.
I can assure you it wont stain clothes. It's been almost a year now and no issues or fading at all back to the original color.
For suede you should have have used fiebings oil dye.
Ah i gotcha, thanks for your insight.
good. can you paint ivory on black en black please
Once you stick it in the car it’s harder to tell. Inside a car it’s darker and you never see every angle of a seat
My F150 has the factory fabric seats, my interior is grey and I want to do it All Black. How many cans of the paint do you think I would need?
Bummer on the stripes! Thank you for the tips!
Great vid- what tires are those on the red sled?
And- is it AWD?
I am looking for 15 or 17' super performance tires for a AWD TT V8 giggle machine...
Hello all the way from the uk. I personally think the video is a win. you've certainly made the seat look better :) I'm going to be doing this myself on exactly the same seat in the next coming weeks so I had a few questions for you. we can't get dupli color over here but vht do a vinyl dye/paint and from reading it's the same as the dupli color what's your opinion on this? also the zips on the back of the seat. what did you do with them as they are metal I wondered if the paint would make them look funny. unfortunately you didn't show you painting the back haha. and lastly so I don't brake my turning knob. how do you correctly take it off
love the videos.
+Speed Academy hi thanks for the quick reply :) I feel ready. hopefully I get the same results.
in regards to the shift knob I must of called it the wrong thing haha. what I mean is the thing you broke on the seat in the video whilst removing the trim. what's the correct way to take that off. it almost looked like the was a circlip underneath it
+Mike Foster Ohhh yes haha. That is a circlip and it comes off by using some pliers or a flat blade screw driver to pull it off the mount. Good luck!
How does it feel? I would just buy a new seat, has to be worth the money. I mean it looks nice if you ignore the mistakes but does it feel like crap?
Victor Marchionna It's stiff and doesn't feel great but that's because it hasn't been worn in. I've read once you start using it the fabric breaks in and softens up a bit.
For the money this can't be beat. If I had a spare $900 bucks laying around for another Recaro I'd be all over it but until then this painted R32 seat will stay.
Seat paint still holding up good since you posted till now ? And has it rubbed off on your clothes or anything ?
I wonder if regular rustolem spray paint would work on fabric ??
Hello , my seat covers are of rexine , can I do DIY spray painting on them ?
How hard was it to install those R32 seats?
Another good job with cute baby.....
Hi, can you please tell me which seat rails you used for the Recaros and the R32 GTR seats?
thx in advance
regards :)
It's funny because this is the seat I was looking into painting lol
These are r32 GTR seats , its pointless trying to restore those. Just pork up the extra money and buy the nismo leather seat covers made specifically for that seat.
Leather? Horrible! 🤮
did they turn out crunchy? considering doing this to my sti seats
I think it looks awesome
yea, but its hard and feels like a cactus lol
What if u were trying to cleaning your seats will the paint come up
lol, suede isn't a fabric in the strictest sense. it's skin, and should be tanned with leather dye. otherwise, it actually looks pretty good.
think you could paint tan headliner black?or dye them
What if the seats gets hot in a very hot sunny day. I ain't trynna get stain
Always brush in between sprays to distribute
Was that a gloss blk or flat? I'm not sure which to buy.
