    DPI is dots per inch, it's a term used in printing. That's how many dots of ink exist within an inch squared. DPI is typically half the PPI when going from digital to print, though with these higher density displays becoming more and more common that general rule of thumb is most certainly no longer an accurate one.

Now I have moved my TV behind my computer desk, meaning it's right in front of me. I tried watching 24 again, and it looked absolutely horrible! I could clearly see the pixels. I really need to get a 4K TV.

    Linus said "Draw a diagonal line and then measure diagonally". You would be right if he said "Draw a 1 inch box and then measure diagonally".
    To work out PPI you do the following;
    Vertical Pixels (a) = 1920
    Horizontal Pixels (b) = 1200
    Diagonal Pixels (c)
    Diagonal Inches (d) = 7.02
    √(a^2 + b^2) = c (2264.16...)
    c / d = PPi (322.5292694720206 or 323PPI rounded up.)

    commercial mass production is always at least 5 - 7 years behind mature lab results. just because currently 400 ppi is high end, doesn't mean we are not capable of producing higher ppi. JDI already made a small display at 650-700ppi and it was almost half year ago. give it another few years, we'll see 1000+ ppi displays in the lab and commercially available in two years after that

    Actually I was referring to a poll I found that Samsung alone sold twice as many devices as Apple (in whatever quarter they were looking at) and Apple still lead the market in total profit overall. Of course Samsung (and everyone else But Apple) has multiple devices, and everyone but Apple rolls out newer ones every 3-6 mos. So you're correct about the "premium pricing". And TBH, IDK if that included Tablets. it just said devices.

    I readed that oled technology do have a finer pixel density to make things look as fine and crisp as on paper, but if i looked close and futher then my nose,i could clearly see pixel onscreen,so even if the source is 4K and that tv can handle it,does not mean it has a higher dpi or bpp rate.

    so is there any advantage at all to having a higher ppi? like a 27in 4k screen would probably be sufficient to be "retina", but would there be any noticeable difference whatsoever if it were, let's say, 8k? or is it simply, if you can't see the pixels, you don't need more resolution.

    I mean an iPhone is capable of full 1080p on a 5.5 inch screen. I think it looks fantastic. Images are sharp and 60p video looks wonderfully smooth. I don’t think we’ll ever see a phone with UHD. I cannot see the individual pixels on the screen. My laptop on the other hand has a 15ish inch screen, also at 1920x1080, and if I get close enough I can see the pixels. The tv in my parents living room is even worse. It’s like 55 inches, but still only 1920x1080. Pixels are very easy to see even from a couple feet away. My dad recently got a 4K tv for the patio. I haven’t actually watched anything on it yet, but I’m sure I won’t be able to see any pixels

  • @Sharp_3yE
    @Sharp_3yE 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The PPI needed to match the average fovea cone density is in the 250 range from 2/3 feet viewing distance. So we're pretty far from the perfect PPI experience needed in games. You'd need 4K on a 17/18" screen or 8K on a 32 to 35" (both in my opinion too extreme as monitor sizes). Guess the best overall monitor experience with eyes comfort for extended period of times is 6K on a 24 to 27" monitor...or I guess that 5K with a high framerate would suffice on a 27" screen. So yeah I guess Apple got one right with the iMac monitors. Still exceeding the average fovea cone density I personally think is NOT useless as it adds even more details to the image, so fuck it. 8K G-Sync, 200 Hz, IPS (Or Oled or Uled) with HDR on 27/28" monitor is my bet for the PERFECT gaming monitor experience. Maybe 5 to 10 years from now?

    • @motap4935

      Pretty correct except for the 8k res on 27/28”, more realistically 4k or even 1440p

  • @unidigistudios
    @unidigistudios 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    The problem is that vividness isn't always better, although to your eyes it looks better (well saturated colors have a pleasing effect), what the iPad looks for is a more neutral, accurate color. AMOLED other than PENTILE has another downside and it is the slight bias to a more 'cool' color temperature, which in a way increases saturation. If you take a look at some high-end displays (500$ and up) they will usually be looking for color accuracy and not saturation and contrast.

    Fair enough. I mean if we were to both look at the same PR reports we could easily both interpret different things. For instance, say in your example Samsung outsold Apple, say GS4 vs. iPhone 5. But there are lots of factors at play such as the fact that the GS4 was a new device while iPhone 5 is in the decline of its product cycle, etc.
    Not saying you made up those numbers or that I disagree, but generally speaking I still wouldn't say that Apple is being outsold by quite that high of a ratio.

    backlighting is where we need more improvement most displays are using more power then the cpu the device is equipped with. also companies as of late love to skimp on battery size just so they can say their device is light and sleek not to mention their still using lithium batteries when we've had Li-imide batteries since 2007 which last 3yrs before starting to lose charge and 2 AA's worth can hold upto 5300mah of charge. the Iphone 5 has a crappy 1440mah battery for reference.

So it was the iP5 that was new to the market. Which actually makes my reference a bit old since we've now entered Q3 of 2013...lol. But that also means we're only seeing Q1 results as current since it takes a couple mos to compile data.

    Yep looks fine to me... I wouldnt complain if I had a 1440p monitor but as long as a 1440p monitor costs 3x more and a graphics card to power the game at that resolution costs 2x more, I'll stick with 1080p :P

  • @devilmikey00
    @devilmikey00 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wish they would stop with the resolution increase on phones now. At 720p at the realistic distance you hold your phone from your face, you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between all those new spiffy 1080p phones. If they just stuck with 720p but kept improving the performance you would see more benefit with better fluidity in games and the phone would just preform better all around. Sadly that won't happen because it's too easy from a marketing stand point to show a big number.

    If Apple were so confident that you couldn't see the pixels anymore, they'd switch off anti-aliasing for text. The truth is that it's like with fps: we are still a long way away from the point where more isn't better anymore. We're at the point where you still can't have enough. I can easily tell the difference between a 600 dpi and a 1200 dpi printer. So good luck selling me a 300 ppi display as the last display I'll ever need.

      Penny Lane sigh, apple was the first one to bring a retina MacBook meaning when Apple introduced the retina MacBooks they had the highest pixel density on any laptop ever. Everyone complained how it resolution didn't matter as much and now that Apple is keeping it retina and not increasing the resolution for the sake of increasing the resolution when there's no real benefit, everyone suddenly need the highest ppi display even though Retina display is all you need for you to not be able to distinguish pixels.
      If there were significant benefits to increasing the resolution after a certain point which is retina then Apple would've done it as Apple was literally the first to put retina or highest resolution display at the time when they introduced it first.

    • @unvergebeneid
      @unvergebeneid 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, I applauded Apple for finally pushing the resolution of displays which had been stagnant for quite a while before. I just think "Retina" is a stupid marketing term and that the claims attached to it are dishonest. It is also clear that there are diminishing returns when increasing the pixel density and since there are other factors at play, everyone will have a different sweet spot with respect to their individual preferences (battery life, price and pixel density mainly). It is perfectly reasonable to limit pixel density in this trade-off. It is not reasonable, however, to claim that no compromise has been made and that nobody would ever want a higher pixel density when these other restrictions are falling away due to further technological progress.

    Please do a video on 1080p phones vs 720p phones and the PPI difference.
    There are tons of people online saying anything over 300ppi doesnt matter but upgrading from a 720p phone to a 1080p phone I can really see the difference.
    I guess the question is do we really need 400+ppi?

    • @JayJapanB
      @JayJapanB 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      720p is fine for me on a phone I'll take a lot higher than 1080p on a pc though. (1440p, 2160p etc)
      With a phone I would rather the battery life and more invested in the camera.

    • @kisspeteristvan
      @kisspeteristvan 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      there's no need for a video to answser your question.
      You can't really focus to objects closer than 10cm or 4 inches .
      So when i did that and struggled to focus maybe 6-7 cm away from a 4.7 inch 720p mobile phone display(htc one x) , i started seeing the pixels , they were tiny but visible for like 5 seconds then my eye went out of focus (cause i could only focus one eye on that distance).
      so if you have regular perfect eyes anything around 300ppi should be enough .
      I can imagine 400+ ppi is like no matter how hard you try you just CAN NOT see the pixels even from 5cm .
      Well 200ppi+ should be well enough if you're not too picky.
      there is meaning to go any more dense couse a LOT of people have problems reading text and resolving detail under let's say a font size of 7 , and a 7' font is already crisp on ~300ppi.
      BUT YOU CAN'T benefit from newer techologies in the mobile space without having to buy a 1080p smartphone. Even if there is no real benefit other than numbers.
      huhhhh i hope this made some sense...

    • @goxcpre
      @goxcpre 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. Went from 720 to 1080 and I felt what you said, that I could not see the pixels as hard as I tried. I honestly like it but people always try to argue with me that there is no difference.

  • @GlenwingThink
    @GlenwingThink 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Pixel density is not the measurement of how many pixels are in a square inch. It is if you measure one inch along a monitor, how many pixels are equivalent to that inch at the given size of the pixels on the display.

    Is there a big difference between 386 PPI and 560 PPI for human eyes on a 6,6 inches smartphone Oled Full HD display? If yes, could you explain me what kind of differences Please?

  • @monsteravinloony
    @monsteravinloony 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nope, that's incorrect. PPI is a horizontal or vertical measurement, not a diagonal measurement. You need to measure one inch up or down and count the pixels, not diagonally. Case in point: the new Nexus 7 is 1920x1200 on a 5.9in x 3.25in display, giving 325ppi (officially 323). Doing this along a diagonal inch would give two wrong answers, depending on whether you count horizontal or vertical pixels traversed, of 1/7 * 1920 = 274ppi or 1/7 * 1200 = 171ppi.
    Apart from that, great video! ;-)

  • @doomtomb3
    @doomtomb3 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ya but where do you draw the line? This is similar to the fiasco of determining how many frames per second or refresh rate or eyes need to see continuous motion. It's like Moore's law, things are improving at a manufacturing rate, we just have to be patient and pleased with what they've already been able to engineer. 10 years ago most of our displays were still 1024x768.

  • @GlenwingThink
    @GlenwingThink 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Agreed... Purposely designing a product to be heavier on system resources, costlier to produce, and provide no benefit, because you can trick consumers into thinking it is better and buying it, is an insult to engineering.

      stickfigure31 To start off, TH-cam makes videos which you are viewing at lower resolutions look horrible, and more blocky than they really should be, so TH-cam is not a fair comparison by any means.
      Also, read this: support.google.com/youtube/answer/1722171?hl=en For a "standard quality" upload of a full HD video, TH-cam reccommends a bitrate of 8,000 kilobits a second, with is similar to a DVD quality movie. Also, get a blu-ray player/drive if you don't already have one, and compare the image quality you are getting from both a DVD and Blu Ray of the same movie. DVD's have a capacity of 4.7 GB per layer, and 25 GB per layer for blu-ray. So in addition to the higher resolution of the blu-ray, you are also getting a higher bit-rate.

    Beyond 300ppi it's fairly redundant. It's like the size of the screens themselves, they've become ridiculously massive. If they made Zoolander now they'd use a paving slab instead to make fun of the size of phones rather than the TicTac sized thing they used lol.

    • @nappaa

      Patrick Proctor All the numbers I have seen have been measured in a right angle line, and I have been obsessing about these for quite a bit. Also you will get a greater PPI by doing it that way. A one inch line will cover less pixels diagonally than it will in a right angle.

    does that use SLCD3 like the htc one? I have always been critical about colour performance rather than anything. To the point where I Game on a SA650 monitor (Its a SLOW va panel, response time Would probably be 10ms+)

    I didn't think the LG G3 was going to look so much better then my Nexus 5 which already has 445 DPI. So that also pushed me to get the Yoga Pro 2 with the 13.3" 3200x1800 screen, resulting in a screen that looks perfect just 24 inches away (average typing distance). Its weird that when i get 16 or so inches it bothers me that i can see pixels. And i even notice people look at the screen not believing the text looks so clear. 300 dpi limit is bull shit, maybe if ur in a real hurry, blind, or drunk... i personally think 600 is the real limit if you have good eyes.
