REALLY, REALLY like the change in camera angle throughout the video! great job! Techquickie
Interesting point, but the complications that arise from manufacturing 1000 ppi or 2000 ppi displays thatare outlined in the video are very real, particularly for consumer grade products. The future is going to be awesome though...

Apple's displays have more going for them than just resolution. They have (objectively, no fanboy nonsense) some of the best mobile displays on the market when you consider contrast, colour accuracy, AND resolution.

I loved this format better! Keep up the good work and thank you for your hard work and dedication!
i have a phone with 213 ppi with a 4,5 inch display and for me it looks great.Have to really stare up close to see any pixels.
I'm so glad you spelled "colour" correctly Diezel or B-Roll! That made me quite happy and was probably my favourite part of the video. I also love the professionalism on this channel for the target audience. It makes me feel like Linus is "at work", whereas the LTT channel feels like Linus and/or Slick and I are just kicking back with the nerdy shit we're into. Loving everything Linus Media Group is doing, keep up the fantastic work guys!
Your advertisement transitions are always unexpected and humorous, love it.
4K likes. Pretty cool
Really like the new format! Good job!
Thanks Linus and team, keep these videos coming. They have been (and will be) really useful.
Good thorough video Linus as always :D and I also love the new editing style used in this video. Good job and keep up the good work :D
Personally, i like AMOLED screens. When i compared my Note 2 screen with my friends iPad 4, my colors were more vivid and overall it looked better. The difference was actually quite big.
32" 1920x1080p monitor owner here. Couldn't agree more. I couldn't care less for 1200 or 1440p resolutions. 1080p has served me well for quite some time, and it still looks wonderful to this day.
Did you opinion change since then?

But I want to see tigers at 8k ultra hd
and here I thought the Ipad would scan your eye for some reason lol
Thank you! Finally someone speaks some sense about this topic!
As usual, great video!
DPI is dots per inch, it's a term used in printing. That's how many dots of ink exist within an inch squared. DPI is typically half the PPI when going from digital to print, though with these higher density displays becoming more and more common that general rule of thumb is most certainly no longer an accurate one.
MISSED THIS SO MUCH!
good question. We probably should have mentioned that high pixel density displays ARE awesome.
I have a 40" 1080p LCD TV, and I have been watching the TV series '24' on DVD. When I was watching it from about ten feet away, the quality looked really good. Now I have moved my TV behind my computer desk, meaning it's right in front of me. I tried watching 24 again, and it looked absolutely horrible! I could clearly see the pixels. I really need to get a 4K TV.
thankyou Linus, your techquickie videos are my favorite.
here im gonna take time and remove adblock just for this video. something I never do.
The best info per minute.
Thanks for making this video!
It's the profile the use too. They tend to be better calibrated out of the box than the displays you get from other vendors, even if it's the exact same panel.
Oh, this is super useful! thank you!
Linus said "Draw a diagonal line and then measure diagonally". You would be right if he said "Draw a 1 inch box and then measure diagonally".
To work out PPI you do the following;
Vertical Pixels (a) = 1920
Horizontal Pixels (b) = 1200
Diagonal Pixels (c)
Diagonal Inches (d) = 7.02
√(a^2 + b^2) = c (2264.16...)
c / d = PPi (322.5292694720206 or 323PPI rounded up.)
A thread is a task for the processor. Cores run threads. Usually you will have several dozen or hundreds of threads running simultaneously, but most of them are very light.
i have "retina" on my macbook and damn its sharp compared to my old dell inspiron.
It's because you had an old dell inspiron. It's like me saying WOW this 4k display is so sharp compared to my dell 1280 x 1024 display of similar size.
Green screen may help with the animations they pop in and out. They could also change the entire background if they need to show something else.
when i play a game and i see a landing leg in the distance. i see a landing leg. but when i look really close to the screen i see a line of pixels and not much more. what is this effect?
We tried this and it was a disaster.. (look at previous Fast As Possible videos) Then my cat knocked a Kino Flo light (expensive) into the wall and put an ugly mark on it, which 3 coats of primer and paint weren't able to cover up, then we just gave up and went green screen :p
so is there any advantage at all to having a higher ppi? like a 27in 4k screen would probably be sufficient to be "retina", but would there be any noticeable difference whatsoever if it were, let's say, 8k? or is it simply, if you can't see the pixels, you don't need more resolution.
Man, that was quick! Thanks!
I readed that oled technology do have a finer pixel density to make things look as fine and crisp as on paper, but if i looked close and futher then my nose,i could clearly see pixel onscreen,so even if the source is 4K and that tv can handle it,does not mean it has a higher dpi or bpp rate.
wait, do you see better when you're closer to the display or further away?
I loved this video! GG Linus!
my laptop is 17.3inch with 1080p display 127ppi and im happy with that
I have a 1440x900 monitor that I am currently using and I enjoy using it more than the 1080p monitors. It also gives me better performance ;D.
With the sacrifice of beauty
Wow, your computer must SUCK!
It depends on the size of the display but nowadays 500+ PPI is what you should aim at if you want the highest appreciable quality in your smartphone.
Because of PPI, I'm not fan of big screens.
Then just tape a bunch of tiny monitors together, silly. :^)
Sawta
No, because if I hate something more than a screen with low PPI, are borders.
just get a big 4K screen, good enough ppi then

commercial mass production is always at least 5 - 7 years behind mature lab results. just because currently 400 ppi is high end, doesn't mean we are not capable of producing higher ppi. JDI already made a small display at 650-700ppi and it was almost half year ago. give it another few years, we'll see 1000+ ppi displays in the lab and commercially available in two years after that
Would you please consider doing a teckquikie on ad hoc network, we would really appreciate.thanks and keep up the good work
Is there a big difference between 386 PPI and 560 PPI for human eyes on a 6,6 inches smartphone Oled Full HD display? If yes, could you explain me what kind of differences Please?
I can see pixels on my macbooks Retina Display... Am I good or too close to the screen?
omg that asking xDD
+Lehtaan The problem is you're using a mac.
+Jeremy Kurowski No, the problem is you're a windows fanboy. Macs PPI is actually pretty good.
Jeremy Kurowski Just plain Linux? No ubuntu or anything like that? Sad. I'd recommend Ubuntu for you, it's really great. Lil' fanboy.
The problem is that I want a linux machine with high ppi and high resolution on which I can play games and code. And I would only recommend Ubuntu to someone who wants to have a mac but doesn't have the moneyz. Go Arch or go home.
way to go linus you rock!
You have done well.
very good video, thank you Linus :)
I've missed techquickie :')
Loving my HTC One X screen. Its sooo good!
Lol the Velcro on the back of your phone case XD
DPI and PPI are basically completely different. DPI is a term that is usually only used when printing an image.
I believe the original Droid DNA was the first phone from HTC to use SLCD3, though I might be wrong but I believe it is a different panel from the One. (citation needed)
(after googling, DNA IS slcd3, still unsure about panel though)
I can play most games on Ultra with my set-up on 1080p and it looks amazing enough already. I'm sure 1440p would look better, but I am more than satisfied with 1080p. Maybe when 1440p becomes the new standard I'll jump up to it, but til then I am fine with 1080p.
Right. Thanks!
Actually I was referring to a poll I found that Samsung alone sold twice as many devices as Apple (in whatever quarter they were looking at) and Apple still lead the market in total profit overall. Of course Samsung (and everyone else But Apple) has multiple devices, and everyone but Apple rolls out newer ones every 3-6 mos. So you're correct about the "premium pricing". And TBH, IDK if that included Tablets. it just said devices.
I recently purchased a Nexus 7 2013 model which has a resolution of 1920x 1200 and a ppi of 323 and I genuinely cannot tell the difference in quality between a 720p video and a 1080p video while using it.
Thanks , that helped i really appreciate it :)
Why is it that laptop devices have lower ppi than phones but are still considered retina? For example the iPhone has had a 326 ppi since the 4 and only came up to 401 with the 6 plus. However the new MacBook has a ppi in the 220s and is still retina. How?
Okay I'm really confused. The iPad mini 2 according to gsmarena has a resolution that seems to go beyond 1080p. I am wondering and no can seem to answer. Is the iPad mini 2 a 1080p display even with the retina slapped on? Or I'd it just a NON 1080p device and just has high pixel density.
I saw this guy on an ad and the ad was on this video
Nice Explanation Thanks Linus...:)
I thought this was a very good over view. Though there is still lots of different aspects that make a screen more crisp but then we get very technical so it doesn't matter to much and we would just start confusing more people.
good work dude
7 years passed, retina displays are still expensive and even hard to find
Using Blu-Ray instead of DVD would also make a pretty big difference.
I mean an iPhone is capable of full 1080p on a 5.5 inch screen. I think it looks fantastic. Images are sharp and 60p video looks wonderfully smooth. I don’t think we’ll ever see a phone with UHD. I cannot see the individual pixels on the screen. My laptop on the other hand has a 15ish inch screen, also at 1920x1080, and if I get close enough I can see the pixels. The tv in my parents living room is even worse. It’s like 55 inches, but still only 1920x1080. Pixels are very easy to see even from a couple feet away. My dad recently got a 4K tv for the patio. I haven’t actually watched anything on it yet, but I’m sure I won’t be able to see any pixels
Even though 'color accuracy' could cover it, I think you should have mentioned a viewing angle at 2:02
Linus, My old Sony xperia U seems to have a dead pixel in the corner of every square centimeter (EXACTLY EVERY ONE) I was wondering is this a feature to enhance it somehow, or was I just somehow incredibly lucky?
Linus, please do a "Cores vs Threads" video
Yea ur right. I think it was a Q4 report(?) since I saw it a month or so ago, so it would've been the GS3 (and other devices; remember there are many) vs the iP5. So it was the iP5 that was new to the market. Which actually makes my reference a bit old since we've now entered Q3 of 2013...lol. But that also means we're only seeing Q1 results as current since it takes a couple mos to compile data.
Already done!
so sick of these minute long commercials... the reason why we watch you linus, is because you get to the relevant shit right away and keep it clean and simple, yet decent long.
Thanks!
My question is is the new iPhone 10 have any better screen and my Note 3 did 5 years ago
I would love this revisited, beyond resolution, screen size and distance there is also Angular Resolution: www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Can-you-see-the-difference-with-a-4K-monitor-729/
Want to see more about monitors!
If my "DPI" is "240", would I need to use Pythagorean's Theorem to calculate PPI?
thank you liuns :)
does that use SLCD3 like the htc one? I have always been critical about colour performance rather than anything. To the point where I Game on a SA650 monitor (Its a SLOW va panel, response time Would probably be 10ms+)
So far some of the most accurately displays I ever saw would be HTC one and the iphone 5 but I don't know about the DNA.
for a PC monitor i see the benefit from higher resolution and pixel density especially for higher than 22" monitors but for phones and tablets there is no benefit beyond 1080p
He's done one on the ncixtechtips channel
Linus is still getting even better for every video he is making. Sky is the limit.
So going to get that job at bestbuy
Ive been watching this all day
The problem is that vividness isn't always better, although to your eyes it looks better (well saturated colors have a pleasing effect), what the iPad looks for is a more neutral, accurate color. AMOLED other than PENTILE has another downside and it is the slight bias to a more 'cool' color temperature, which in a way increases saturation. If you take a look at some high-end displays (500$ and up) they will usually be looking for color accuracy and not saturation and contrast.
Can you do an 'AFAP' on non-reference gpu's. Like the differences between superclocked etc.
he is linus.... he does unboxing and reviews on his other channel mostly centered around computer related stuff or stuff that he can get his hands on.... basically he does what ever he likes and wants and could on a video... you also can see him hosting the NCIX channel on youtube as well... he does the same thing there also... this is his channel for giving us info on things we have question on. He also has a cat tips channel as well.
Hey Linus I was wondering if you could do a video on OLED (OLED TV's).
Can't the white background be rendered in a higher quality to remove the banding? The bands look better than they used to, but still seems like it could be better.
Man I hate apple marketing/naming, it's like they think their customers are total idiots that can't understand simple concepts like display resolution. Like the "iSight" camera, the "magic" mouse, "air port" and so on.
In apple's defense, their customers generally are total idiots.
Say what you will about apple but you can't argue with their marketing strategies. I bought a Macbook for the sole reason of social status. I had an Android phone and I felt ashamed of it and no one had its charger when I didnt have mine. My friends who dont have apple agree even though they know their laptop or smartphone is better
Nakor Z Agreed.
***** What does? Certainly not a any apple product. Also what the hell is an igpu
Matt Flynn I don't know where your from, where more people have apple phones but everyone I know has a micro usb charger does not matter if they buy a samsung or a nokia or anything else. They can know for sure that what every they buy they can use that cable for everything. Simple as that. Don't need a "special" cable just because a company with great marketing and heaps of idiots to sell to wants to be "different" from everyone else.
But my question after watching this is, is it worth it? Like, buying retina stuff, is it worth the hype?
"AFAP What is GPU and CPU" please i really want to know more about those two , and thanks i love your channel i will support you
00:49 Linus talks like *Michael* from vsauce.
true that... i get it for workstations, i mean for professional use you probably want 2560x1440 or multiple monitors but for gaming 1080p is fine imo, and for a phone I have an iphone 4 which is like 960x640 and it looks really crisp, but the previous gen 480x320 did look pretty awful... i imagine somewhere in the middle is fine but i rly dont need 1920x1080 haha
It wasn't to much of a problem untill lately. These problems began yesterday, and since it has happened on almost every video I've watched.
