A lot of people seem to underestimate the skills of the people of the past, thinking that because they existed long ago, that they were also crude and uneducated. The Japanese, the Sumerians, the Toltecs, the Greeks, the Egyptians and many more, were capable of feats of engineering and creativity that were truly mind blowing. They had their own systems of advance mathematics and engineering. No little green men need apply!

They literally built civilization. They created metallurgy, domesticated livestock, domesticated crops, irrigation, the pottery wheel, beer brewing, writing, mathematics, various modes of transportation, more advanced warfare (for good or ill). All this started the Bronze Age. Think about how much experimentation had to go into all this. And it was done more than 6000 years ago, and we still don't really know how long it took them to figure all this out. Homo sapiens have been wandering this planet for 200,000 years, and they were just as smart and capable as what we are now. Dare I say more capable of survival than your average spoiled city dweller sipping the latte with zero appreciation from where they get their means of survival.
For anyone wondering about the ancient astronaut. It is actually an astronaut, but it was added to the Cathedral of Salamanca in 1992 by Jeronimo Garcia, when he did renovation work on the cathedral.

I've always loved that fan theory of the movie signs that it wasn't Aliens invading but actually hellish demons and the reason that the water hurt them was because the main character got his faith back and the water was blessed. It's a stretch but does fix quite a few of the plot holes.

Although I'm not that sure about the argument that alien idiots would not be piloting their spaceships. I've seen plenty enough human idiots piloting human vehicles. While human spaceships might not share that fate YET, if our civilization reaches a level of advancement where spaceships are cheap and plentiful... I mean we already have space tourism starting to arise.
Also, if aliens send warships to Earth (I don't think it's a likely scenario, movies and fiction focus on such scenarios because it's more interesting, but reality doesn't provide much reason to believe this to be probable) but IF they do... well, many human generals and army leaders weren't the brightest people either. Noble birth, loyalty to the leader, and many other factors usually were more important in choosing people to lead armies more so than intelligence. Would it be the same for aliens? Dunno. But I see no reason to assume alien idiots would not lead their fleets xD

When I was 12 I read a book stating there was graffiti on the blocks of the pyramids saying such as "today, a block was laid by Nile Crew Two. We are having a pot of beer, and so passes the pharaoh, drunker then all of us", or such as that. Damn clever of the aliens to go to such lengths to mislead mankind.

What is particularly annoying is that even when I was a child I remember the old history channel approach to be better. The documentary "The Men Who Built America" was far more interesting to me because it was presented in such a way that was fascinating. They were quite good at showing both the good things that the early monopolies created, but also the horrors that they birthed. To be clear, I was 12 when I first watched that show.
The Men Who Built America series came out 3 years after Ancient Aliens.

One of my exes believed that aliens built the pyramids. Her parents believed it too. It was so difficult to hold back my fits of laughter whenever they would talk about it.
Then you are not able to enlighten them.
Can you explain why you can find similar pyramids in both Egypt and America, for example? So, people living in such distant places, were able to interact (how?), and after doing that, travellers from both civilizations were able to convince their leaders to waste time and resources building such monstrous buildings. That's kind of... hard to process, from a rational point of view. It's even more of a wild theory than the one of the Aliens.

I miss those old shows about the military tactics Alexander The Great or Patton, and even the technological feats of the Ancient Greeks! There was so much to learn that was also useful!
I grew up watching the history channel. Every Saturday morning I was watching it. Then they decided that oh no aliens were better so they changed my favourite channel, The Military History Channel into H2 and just showered it in alien mumbo jumbo. Now both channels have gone from class history documentaries to Duck Dynasty and Ancient Aliens. Forget the fall of Rome, this was the real fall of civilization.

Although it's a bunch of nonsense, I think Ancient Aliens still isn't quite as bad as how History Channel was in the years leading up to that, when all they ever showed was sensationalist garbage about the NSDAP and WWII, as though no other parts of history were worth covering.
The Pyramids, Stonehenge and every other ancient site proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that our ancient ancestors were far more innovative, inventive and resourceful than we give them credit for, possibly moreso than we are now.

I am old enough to remember when the History Channel was launched, and it did initially air some very good documentaries with real scholars. I was an early fan, but abandoned the channel when it ceased quality programs about history. My wife is Korean, and streams a Korean channel about Korean history and culture with programs very much like those aired in the early days of The History Channel. We hope it continues with quality programs!

One of my favorite alternate history genre is the "ancient advanced civilization". Not because they MIGHT have existed but because it's always about hubris.
These people's line of thought is basically: Non-Europeans cannot build cool stuff
I like it too. But I seriously doubt there's any truth to it. Any technologically advanced civilization would leave signs, even if those signs were now no more than strange mineral deposits, or unexplainable deposits of artificially created substances like steel or plastics.

Take Atlantis for example, the dates given would put it at its height during the Younger Dryas and at about the time that Gobekli Tepe was constructed. Every known "civilization" of this time was tribal and copper was the most advanced material on the planet as far as they were concerned. So the "advanced technology" of Atlantis could just have been that they figured out how to make bronze and had a society based on city-states. Fast forward several thousand years and mythical Atlantis had flying vehicles and crystal based technology like some shit on Stargate.
I like to watch such shows as a sci-fi B movies. Btw History channel is responsible for the anti-historical "Vikings" TV series.

I remember watching some alien invasion movie/series on Netflix. Basically the alien ships entered our atmosphere and started blasting the crap out of everyone to take over. However, when the alien flying ship came up to the main characters apartment window shining a huge bright light into it they managed to fool the aliens and successfully hide behind the couch.. 😂 So basically your trying to tell me an alien race mastered interstellar travel.... had the intelligence and logistics to fly thousands of craft through space to launch an invasion of earth and destroy mankind and basically all they have to find the humans with is a big torch..... I never understood the idea that aliens need our resources. They could take a giant space chuck of uranium or ice or any number of resources we have on earth and probably hundreds or thousands of undiscovered resources or chemicals we haven't even found yet. And they could do all that without going a hundred thousand light-years close to earth.
I know right. The idea that aliens want material deposits is idiotic because it's unimaginably easier to mine asteroids as they have no gravity well of notice, you don't have to dig down so far, and the whole structure will be less compacted. If they were stripping planets, I don't believe there's any particular reason to target earth first. And that wouldn't be an invasion - that'd be a nuke-and-chop ^^ Then there's when fiction uses water as a resource that aliens want.... God, water in the form of ice is one of the most common fucking things out there lol.
When you start from first principles, the thing that makes earth special is it's biosphere. We shouldn't trivialise that either btw. Even if the universe is teaming with life (even intelligent life at that) you'd still expect to see a non-trivial chunk of any sophisticated population spending their whole lives studying specific species. There are many thousands of humans that more or less dedicate their lives to studying ants. If life is rare (it kind of looks like it could be; at least for advanced intelligence lol) a biosphere could be one of the most valuable things in the universe
Right? Anyone who's capable of interstellar travel has obviously got a tremendous energy source, which in turn means they can go grab resources from anywhere, or even fuse rarer elements for themselves.

One of my favourite clips about aliens and the pyramids was on Rogan, G. Hancock saying: "you have to confront basic laws of physics, you can't haul a stone weighing tens of tonnes up a slope that exceeds 10 degrees, how long of a ramp you would need at 10 degrees to get to 350 feet above the ground, and the answer is you need an f'ing long ramp"
- The perimeter of the Great Pyramid for example is 3'023 feet, that means each side is 755 feet long, a 10 degree ramp needs to be 2000 feet long to get 350 feet in the air, but the pyramid is actually 481 feet tall, which needs a ramp that's 2'727 feet long... less than the perimeter, shockingly lol. And that's the closest any pyramid gets to using up the full perimeter, most only need 2 or 3 sides covered in ramp.
He also says "it couldn't have been a sand ramp, it would have collapsed under the weight of those stones" - while failing to understand the basic physics of sand, it has an angle of repose. Adding any fibrous material to the mix (organic waste / trees / branches) from the collection area and used in the ramps construction would increase its strength, but even that's not required. Dry sands repose angle is 34 degrees. If you wanted a ramp that's 481 feet tall, you'd need a sand pile 713.9 feet wide (from the base of the pyramid out)... and if you wanted a 41.1 foot wide flat ramp area, that extends it out to 755 feet... the length of one side of the pyramid... funny how construction works. Also, in Egyptian measurements, the 755 foot side length is 440 cubits. If they knew sands repose angle, they may well have chosen 41.1 feet to be the ramp width so that it added up to the full 440 cubits of the side -> because 41.1 feet is 23.96 cubits, the number of hours in a day. So even the temporary construction material surrounding the pyramid during construction would match the same geometry they were building underneath, something they probably thought about given how long they took to build.

This comes at the perfect time because just yesterday I was approached by a person at work who was otherwise very nice and friendly but when I mentioned I was a history student and was taking a class on ancient Egypt, they suddenly started talking about all these ancient aliens conspiracy theories. God, it was so awkward.
Here's a sad extension to a similar story.
I'm a history major.
My first degree, causality willing, ought to be in my hands in winter.
My mother is an alien conspiracy theorist who 100% believes she's a reincarnated alien, thinks half of my coursework is bunk.
The person who bought my history books ever since I learned how to wipe my own ass, thinks my entire passion, field of (not currently) expertise, is a sham.
It hurts me not to make a fuss over how ridiculous it is.

I have had a similar awkward discussion. But I've also been to Egypt, and in particular, the quarry at Aswan where Obelisks were cut, and while the unfinished Obelisk is pretty neat, and the cut lines are clean, it's clear it wasn't cut by a laser, or anything high tech. When they doubted ancient humans ability to move such large pieces of rock, I pointed out the ancient Romans managed it, and took 13 Obelisks back home, on ships, and managed to erect them using ropes and wooden scaffolds etc. No aliens required there, so why did the Egyptians need aliens, and not just rope, scaffolds, and lot of hands?

What always gets me is some people’s willingness to not believe that our ancestors had brains capable of advanced thought and skill, had civil engineering and building ability, and that regardless of culture, there are only so many ways to build things that are pleasing to the human eye, a pyramid being one of them.
I do appreciate that Metatron does credit that we don't know how the Pyramids were built. But yes. Progressivism does tend to engender the attitude that people before us were dumber.
They didn't have large earth moving machines, they didn't have theodolites and laser levels, they didn't have steel tools...
So they worked out how to do what they wanted with what they *_did_* have, just as humans have done all throughout our history.

I actually love Ancient Alien theory as a hypothetical, it's great for stories and fiction. In no way should it be taken 100% as fact, though.
It has been used so much in sci-fi that it has become a clichè. However, if you use it well it can create excellent stories.

I found the entire argument to be in bad faith, poisoning the well, straw manning, and many, many other juvenile techniques. A more good faith approach would have been to steelman their position, and then debunk their best arguments. I don't believe aliens built the pyramids,. But I do believe large swaths of our history are incomplete or flat out wrong, and there has become a kind of gospel truth about history in academia which is always death to science. Sumerians made Ziggurats, Mesoamerican civilizations did the same stuff with their temples. It just took multiple decades, just like other tombs made for pharaohs and aztec/mayan/whatever temples or ziggurats. Also what is "astrology knowledge" required? Nobody needed horoscopes to build structures

I would be surprised to find any. I actually read books by the main proponent of the ancient astronaut theory von Daeniken and went to see his speech on Egypt. He very clearly and for almost 55 years now says pyramids were build by human beings, ancient Egyptians,they were not build by aliens. I never met anyone who thinks aliens built the pyramids. I met a lot of people who believe others believe it.

Because the pyramid is a structure that can withstand the passage of time much better than any other structure, due to its' geometrical shape. In essence, it's the perfect landmark if you want it to last for thousands of years.
The stellar constellation-like arrangement of the pyramids both in Egypt and South America is also an unsolved mystery. Both locations represent a lot of similarities in how the pyramids were built and arranged in accordance with the stars. It's almost as if they were built by the same engineers. Yet, the ancient Egyptians never visited South America, as far as we know.
That said, there's no evidence that Aliens built the pyramids per se... but maybe the humans who did had some help, or at least influence from a smarter species ? The known technology at the time leaves a lot of questions open to interpretation, to which historians have no verifiable answers.
It was their plan all along. If they would make a too complex structure, people would suspect. They choose the pyramid because they assumed that humans would assume,it would be reasonable for ancient Egyptians to know how to build a pyramid, since it's the simplest and most bacis of shapes, and would be therefore discovered first.
@@SevenSixTwo2012 No, the pyramids themselves don't actually conform much to constellations. And even if they did, that wouldn't really be unfeasible. It's mathematics that even the Egyptians had. Again, the Egyptian pyramids don't actually align with any constellations, people just tend look at a few in a vacuum, think they kind of look like Orion's belt when viewed from above (which is the usual constellation people generally use) and conveniently ignore the other pyramids in the complex that don't match up with the rest of the constellation.

It's possible there is a forgotten a craft of fire assisted stone working which gave rise to the megalithic tradition and eventually led onto metal mining - at which point it was forgotten with the coming of iron tools for stone working.
This method creates a reasonable explanation for the recurrance of megalithic traditions around the world in pre-iron cultures.

Good point, but that may be one thing in the movie that makes sense. If they have automatic doors like on Star Trek and most other sci fi shows, they may be quite unfamiliar with the concept of a manually opened door. When you gain skills and technology, you also tend to lose older skills and technology. Aside from that one possible bit of sense, Signs was a dumpsterfire of a movie.

The concept of a pyramid shaped object being a spacecraft came from early oriental scholars reading the Vaimanika Shastra I.e. the manual to build a vimana.
It's a real ancient document and it does talk about propulsion using mercury gyroscopes.

I would really like a followup video about historic asumptions that seem to support the presence of aliens in our past. Like that the cheops-pyramid was build in only 20 years which seems impossible for the technology of the time.
I lost interest in the History Channel show *very* quickly, so I don't know if they ever got around to it, but my favorite alien topic is the intersection of folklore and modern alien sightings. A lot of people talk about green-skinned children found in the forest, but I'd like to hear more about the three most commonly sighted types of aliens/fairies/trolls/gnomes/dwarves:
1. The "nordic types" or fair folk. Aliens that look like tall and very attractive humans of light pigmentation (blonde hair, blue eyes).
2. The reptiles. Think anthrpomorphic lizards, snakes, or dinosaurs.
3. The chinnless dwarves. Look like grey aliens or little green men until they take off their strange clothes and head coverings to reveal a very short person with a face that is exceptionally ugly and (when it's not completely hidden under facial hair) features a very under-developed chin, but otherwise appears human.
I don't even care about whether they are real, I'm just interested in why these same forms are so common in alien/fairy tales going back millennia :)
I honestly find the typical Scandinavian woman to be quite boring and bland, in terms of appearance. This universal concept = Nordic = Attractive is far from being a rule. It's just one of those things that really stuck.
Now mathematically speaking, the odds that Earth is the only planet with life are staggeringly small. That being said the whole "Aliens did it", is academic laziness, and is an insult to our collective ancestors

Only modern installations have made the "kings chamber" accessable, for example. Certainly more than meets the eye.

About the drake equation. I feel like this gets thrown around a bit too much in support of alien life. However, the equation itself does not state that aliens are likely. It depends entirely on the parameters used. And for about half of those we have only ourselves as reference. That is one rather large reason why the discovery of life on other planets or moons in our solar system, even if microbial, would be such a breakthrough. It would narrow down the f_l or f_e parameter a bit further.
And not to mention that universe is a hella big place.
It also makes massive assumptions about the likelihood of life, complex life, civilizations, technological development, etc., for which we have ONE DATA POINT.

If we can find organic molecules that have been created from rocks in our own solar system, it's extremely narrow-minded to not be open to the idea that organic molecules in a far off solar system would able to come together in the same way they did here, and create life.
And there are 100-400 billion planets in the Milky Way, and 200 billion other galaxies. 200b x 200b = 40,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 other planets that we have no idea if they support life or not.

We know the answer is at least 1, but without a much larger dataset on exoplanets, and the life, or lack thereof on them, that's as far as it gets.
One of the problems is that we are constantly told that ancient civilizations were stupid and backwards for certain beliefs they held, although we have advanced in many ways we've also lost many skills. Creativity or abstract thinking is something that is rapidly declining for example and we can see that in music, architecture, literature etc etc.
This argument that ancient people were dumb and uneducated drives me nuts. It's so arrogant to think we are better than our ancestors, and can even be problematic when we convince ourselves that, "If I was living in Nazi Germany, I would have hidden the Jews, not reported my neighbors for hiding the Jews." -Thus says everybody who blindly follows every cultural idea in the modern day without giving a second thought. Even Jesus rebutted this argument in Matthew 23:29-36.

That, the thought that ancient civilisation was less technologically advanced then us therefore they must had been stupider than we are, has been a constant problem. That has led to the idea that they cannot had accomplished marvels like the pyramids, and therefore 'aliens' must have done it. In reality, our ancestors of all nations were driven, creative folks. We spit on the shoulder of giants that we stand on and never seem to give the older generations the respect they deserve. The arrogance of the newer generations seem to have compounded these past decade.
The ancients can navigate by stars, we can't find our way in few blocks radius without smartphone. Heck, I wonder how many people in this new generation can read map, old fashion way.
Ancient peoples were clearly highly creative, inventive and innovative. And when you think about it, those three qualities are premium survival traits.

I personally do enjoy Ancient Aliens. It is a fun program that has introduced me to some great history that inspired me to read about the real history they subsumed. I first heard of Gobleki Tepe on the show. The premise of the show is more entertainment than empirical. It has given platforms for the likes of Randall Carlson, Graham Hancock and Robert Bauval; who have all written fascinating books of ancient history theories (more on lost civilisation than aliens). I see Ancient Aliens as a gateway to interesting topics than a basis for a substantial discourse. The original text of Chariots of the Gods which inspired the series, I read as a young teenager. It opened up a world of history to me and made me question orthodox education in history. Since my teenage years we have seen a lot of revision happen especially in the ancient sphere of academia. Where we once believed civilisation only dated back 4-6000 years we now have evidence that it may well go back 12000 plus. Its why I love history, it is forever evolving and reshaping. Where once we called outside believers crackpots we know herald them as visionaries and leaders. As Heinrich Schliemann was once ridiculed for his belief in Troy then discovered an ancient city on the location described which is still being unearthed and revised.
So, yes, History Channel is not academically good. No it is not a good source of evidence. It is great at promoting an interest in history and encouraging others to engage. For decent historical TV we now have Metaron, Skallagrim, Shad, Oddysey, HIT etc. Did Aliens ever visit or still visit, I dont know. Is it a great way to inspire others to read on something, yes.
