I once had a coworker that believed that no one lived to old age in past periods. I tried to explain about infant mortality and how that would skew the stats regarding life expectancy. It was like talking to a rock.
It’s all too common a belief. If you survived infancy and for males adolescence and for females, too early childbearing, you’d probably make to your sixties or older.
Even without infant mortality people still died relatively young, if you lived in England or wales during the 1841 the average life expectancy was 57, that during the middle of the medical revolution and in the most prosperous nation in the world at the time
One point that always gets missed is that the fact that taking baths was not very convenient for much of the year does NOT mean that they didn't WASH or cleanse themselves in other ways.

When my parents were children they didn't have hot water and the only heated rooms were the kitchen and bedrooms, so in winter they washed with sponges in the kitchen, where there was a wood stove, using hot water in basins . They could only bathe when it was warm enough, with heated water brought from the kitchen. Modern people are too snobbish and used to every comfort, they seem unable to even conceive of the fact that there are so many ways to wash that don't include having a heated bathroom at home.

I have gone on pilgrimage several times in Poland. The walks in general consisted of 9 days on foot and then bedding down in barns that kind farmers lent to us on the way. Sometimes we found creeks to wash in. Sometimes we took a basin of water and sponge-bathed in private corners. The result? We did not stink too bad, at least at the beginning of the day, and my acne improved. I found out that over-washing is bad for the probiotics in your skin, and I looked much better after learning to be frugal with soap and washing when needing it. I also went to washing my hair once a week, which greatly improved its lustre.
When I was at Mt Fuji in 1983 after an earthquake that severed our fresh water pipes, I still "showered" in the rain. I believe "medieval" people could adjust as well, if not better.

Years ago I was talking to a guy; I was saying about how in the Holocaust loads of Jews were shot or worked to death or died from starvation or subjected to medical experiments and died in a bunch of different other ways. He accused me of hating Jews and denying the Holocaust happened because I didn't say six million people were gassed.

I think that it ultimately comes down to a fear of reality. I know that sounds absolutely crazy, but it's the only explanation that makes any sense at this point. Like you see these people, these conspiracy theorists, who say something like aliens exist or there's a cabal of rich people who diddle kids, then when there's credible evidence that comes out that those are both correct, they never talk about them again. Rather than having their beliefs vindicated, they just act like they never had those beliefs in the first place or they handwave them away.

I do believe it is at least part of the meaning behind the teaching of Jesus that "narrow is the gate and hard is the way". Not at all implying that I am going to make it through. In fact, the more I learn, the less I think I will. But I am still striving. (Also, for context, I don't ascribe to the traditional Christian idea of most of what Jesus taught and said, but I do consider him a great teacher and example.)

It's worth pointing out that an Islamic missionary (or their equivalent) visited Vikings in the Balkans, and in his writings he described them as disgusting. So it wasn't just the English being biased. He also mentioned how striking they were visually, being tall, pale, and blond. In case anyone tries to bring up black vikings that's useful to know. :)
On the topic of "LGBT" in historical eras, Linfamy (great channel about lesser talked about subjects in Japanese history) brought up a good point. To people in historical Japan (as well as probably most pre-modern places and eras) sexuality was not an identity. It was an action and/or a preference. A man may have preferred sleeping with other males (often times, much younger males) but he didn't identify as gay. He just liked what he liked, there was no question about his sexuality because people back then didn't think that way. He probably still got married and slept with his wife to have kids because that was his duty and it what was proper for a man. But he could still visit a male brothel (tea house)
@PipeRhymes Nah, don't deny how it was taboo to do anything gay in most Abrahamic cultures for a lot of history. It was straight up illegal to commit homosexual acts in some US states into the 21st century. And still is in many places like the Middle East.
The whole identity thing is a very new phenomenon, done specifically during a time where categories offer protected status from moral inquiry and/or moral condemnation. People today are more or less inserting their current political and moral beliefs into the past in cases where this is discussed.

It's a sad state of the world where ones identity is defined by ones preferences rather than ones whole character. It's a very narrow way to think about yourself. "Oh, I like men. I'm gay. Ergo, if you don't like homosexuality you have to HATE ME! WAAAA! That's not right! I'm being attacked!" Rather than just accepting it as a small facet of ones existence it becomes the whole of it. The only thing I "identify" as is a human male who believes in the Lord Jesus Christ. Everything else is just small, tiny pieces that make up the patchwork of my life. Some of it colourful, some in tatters... but it's still MY life. I wouldn't be grounding my self-worth on any one small part of it. That leads to complete unstableness in everything else that I could do or want to be.

A LOT of people either don't have these raw qualities, or they're too lazy to care about examining beliefs before they adopt them. Its a combination of both within the BULK of the common population. Lastly, heres a direct glaring example of the complete b.s. that is the 'progress' narrative: The west has access to more information and data than its even had, and both are more easily accessible than they've ever been to any peoples EVER. Yet America houses DROVES of citizens that cant comprehend, write or perform on a level remotely comparable to the chief founders of their own country that died over 200 years ago. 200 years of flipping _progress_ , and huge tracts of the citizenry cant even read or comprehend on a level that allows them to understand the works and intentions of the people that founded their flipping country.

I like that you've coined the term "presentism", which is rampant among modern scholars and college students who won't even listen to primary sources about a given topic if it disagrees with their assumptions about the past. They will literally assume that they are the one's who know better than the human being (who by and large was educated and intelligent due to the fact that he was literate and his work has survived, meaning others found extraordinary value in it) who is telling us the way things were at the time. It blows my mind. Yes, some of these things can be unbelievable, as in the case of The Histories by Herodotus, but shouldn't we at least give him the benefit of the doubt rather than dismissing him outright? After all, he was there, and we know Herodotus wasn't a fool. It bears at the least an open mind and serious investigation. Keep up the good work!

It was actually the first thing we were taught not to do when I studied ancient history. I think it was during university orientation. It's so basic that it was drummed into before we even began to read sources.
I’m not sure if this is your field or not, but I’d LOVE for you to do a video on the theory of “two spirited” Native American people. As a half Native American myself (Apache and Cherokee) I’ve NEVER heard of this “being” or myth from my elders. And trust me, the elders LOVE to talk and spread the truth about our tribes histories, customs and myths. For example; I’m very well aware of Deer Lady, or Stakinis, or Little People/Children, or the Thunderbird, or even skin walkers (although my tribe calls them by a different name and honestly I’m not supposed to talk about them or even mention their name or it’ll bring misfortune to me and I’ve had a bad string of luck lately as it is lol I’m not risking it) There’s many more myths and legends, yet I’ve NEVER heard or read or been told about this “two spirit” being. But the LGBTQs have latched onto this “new” myth (new to me at least) and use it relentlessly. They’ve even added it to their lgbt alphabet soup! WTH?! Natives are very protective of their culture and legends and I’m sure they wouldn’t want this one, if it’s accurate anyway, used as a political symbol and a part of their agenda and rhetoric. Thanks a million for this video, honestly I can't thank you enough. I'm Nigerian and have been very interested in history from my childhood. I was very fond of Western medieval history in my teen years. I'm in my fifties now and a professor in a university in Nigeria. I can assure you that the amount of outright lies and ideologically directed misinformation about ancient, medieval and early modern European history that passes for academic work in my country is mind boggling. My favored term for creators like Medieval Madness is that they are Chronological Imperialists. Note: This is not a term I came up with. It is similar to a term used by C.S. Lewis, "Chronological Snobbery". The use of Imperialism instead was used by Dr. Petter who is a professor at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Massachusetts, USA.
My Medieval and Renaissance professor basically told us that if a person made it to age 30, they would probably make it to their 60s or 70s without much problem. Childbirth and child mortality skews the shit out of averages. One of the papers I wrote was on Gregorio Dati, who demonstrates that skewing of averages. Three of his four wives died from pregnancy/childbirth issues, and only seven of his 26 children were still living by the end of his diary, with the vast majority dying in childhood.

It's more nuanced than that. People didn't really do 'averages' back then, and certainly didn't count infant mortality in it. And we can easily see that people DID die young - we have the parish registers of lots of places in Christian Europe, the Curch was very stringent in recording everyone that was born, married or died. And the death rates are horrendous. In fact, you can do the test yourself: just go to a list of monarchs of any country and see at which age the medieval Kings and Queens died (and they were the most protected people of the time). You can discount the assassinated or killed in battle if you want, it makes little difference, people didn't live long. And woman's lower life expectancy came from the excessive deaths from childbirth. In fact, even when I was a kid back in the 60s-70s, we considered someone in his mid-50s or 60s as 'old'. And it was quite a feat for people to reach 70. This was even worse in earlier centuries. Heck, just check the lifespan of nobles in the 17th and 18th centuries. The French King Louis XIV, for example, died four days short of his 77th birthday. This was enough for his successor to be his greatgrandson Louis XV, since his son had died at 49 and his grandson at 29. And Louis XV died at age 64, with was enough to be succeeded by his grandson Louis Auguste (Louis XVI), as his son had died at age 36. And none of them died assassinated or in battle. Check all the lists of monarchs or nobles from all the countries you want. Before the 19th century, the death rate was very, very high.
Three factors pose dangers to an adult: childbirth for women, war for men and famine and epidemics for the rest, especially the poorer population. It still did not mean people died in their 30s,. Based on the lives of some rulers they usually reached about 50-60 years of age. There were rare cases of people (usually hermits as pointed out by a certain Byzantine writer whose name I forgot) reaching 80 and 90

I did have a teacher as passionate in high school (and he actually traveled to those countries, especially East Europe/Russia in the 70/80s), and I am 60 years old. I appreciate that teacher for my own passion for history. His experience added to the "official" histories the text books mandated. My subsequent military service helped as well.

I've come across Medieval Madness before, and you're exactly right. His historical accounts are littered with this kind of hubristic presentism. It's one thing to make comparisons between eras of history and now, I think that's okay to an extent, as it can help give one's audience a little perspective. It's quite another to make sweeping moral/ethical judgments about history based on modern ideologies. These judgements tell the audience much more about the creator's beliefs than they do about history, which in turn tells us rather a lot about the motives of said creator... And those motives aren't really about history at all. Sadly, this seems to be a very prominent characteristic of modern British historians (eg David Olusoga). I'm not a qualified historian, just a pleb with interest in the subject... But I would much rather watch someone like, say, Histocrat, than someone like Medieval Madness. This is because Histocrat, despite his frequent mispronunciation of names and places, seems to be engaged and thorough. Most importantly, I never feel like the events he discusses are being used as some kind of cheap allegory to promote his own worldview or ideological leanings. Even if at times he might be inaccurate, it's always an honest mistake, not a contortion. Medieval Madness, in comparison, often has this feel of assumed, unthinking superiority, like he is better than the historic peoples he discusses (particularly historic Britons, for some reason) while making massive general assumptions based on mostly inaccurate modern myths about the past, a lot of which can be debunked with extremely minimal research. This appears (at least to me) to be an exercise in mild propaganda, used in order to prop up (and highlight the 'superiority' of) certain fashionable beliefs of the present Western world. Perhaps he is just very young. Things are always much more black and white at that age...

There's a reason why, 3200 years ago, a certain Hebrew man of the Tribe of Levi wrote down that mankind was given three score years and ten to live, or four score with strength - 70 years for a normal life, or 80 if you were blessed by the Most High. Moses, his name was. Now, whether one believes or not, that's certainly a sign that living to 70 was normal. In fact, the average for those who survived infancy. Infant mortality affects the overall average, but not the average of those who survived that short period.

My understanding of the Dark Ages is that it was the time between the fall of the Roman Empire and the start of the Middle Ages. It is called the Dark Ages because no written records for the time can be found and we know very little about it.
As someone who has studied HEMA and carries gradings in Iaido I can say that there is nothing superior about Japanese Martial Arts as I've said and heard many times "there are only so many ways you can swing as sword". I transcribed Cavendish "Truth of the Sworde" with David Rawlings and some of the techiniques are extremely complicated and my father agrees whom has studied Japanese sword for over 40 years!

There is a big difference between bathing and washing. A bath implies filling a bathtub with hot water, climbing in naked and scrubbing yourself with a bar of soap. How often did this happen? Depends on how rich you were, how much clean water you had access to, how much valuable firewood you could divert to heating that 20-gallons of water. Once a month? Once a year? Once a lifetime? We DO NOT KNOW because no one wrote it down. BUT, a daily sponge-bath with a pail of warm water was proabably common, weekly to daily if possible. People DID try to remain clean if only to keep the demons away.
Thank you for this video, because the guy’s section on Knights brings up something sinister about our age. While of course there were some historical cases of pederasty between younger boys and older men that were meant to be their mentors, the vast majority of history, especially European history, was not like this. This is something that has been happening since I was in school, but it’s so much worse now. Let me use LOTR for example. (SPOILERS) There’s been a running gag about the end of LOTR where Frodo and Samwise’s relationship had to be some kind of gay one because they show visible signs of affection towards each other. Now, any male affection or bonds of brotherhood, comradery, or of even love, is seen as male gayness. The left has essentially wiped out the concept that men could have bonds that are deeper than just activity sharing or friendship, and it’s done major damage to the concept of males bonding over significant events. It’s really terrible.
Agreed: all the more angering to me as LOTR was written by a devote Catholic who had very high moral and sexual standards... and they wish to insinuate that two of his most beloved characters were in a gay relationship. Infuriating. One can agree with JRR's stance or not: that's personal choice. But to have others accept your own opinions and choices, to turn around and force a change into a dead man's opinions and choices is beyond disgusting and hypocritical.
You see the same with the film versions of Captain America and Bucky, and of course, it's empowering for the LGBTQ+ community as it gives them more heroes on the big screen, but it's also incredibly sad and says so much about our era that any form of male friendship that goes beyond sarcasm and snark is considered to be a sign of homosexuality. Our model of masculinity is broken, frankly.
As a female, and having read LOTR, I just love how Tolkien describes the deep bond and friendship between all the members of the fellowship. The movie did it credit. Not once did I ever think for a moment that there was any suggested homosexuality. On the contrary, I loved the bromance and deep loyalty and friendship. I was utterly appalled, shocked and angry when, few years later, I came across this whole effort by a small minority to twist Tolkien's work to suggest there was all this gayness going on. Power to all men who should be getting on with their male friends and comrades and get on with each other with deep friendship.

Hating people of the past for not knowing something we know now is the same as hating myself for not knowing how to do math when I was five. Both individually and collectively, we are who we are today only because of what we used to be. The past is part of us, whether pleasant or unpleasant. Denying the shadow denies the light, denies our very beings. The only thing we can do is embrace it all and choose which side to nurture, not which to deny. This should be the basis of all education.

That comment about the samurai being known worldwide made me wonder when he was talking about. Like, how would anyone know what skills the samurai had when they had no contact with most of the world for most of their history and even no contact with any part of the world in some centuries?
Regarding the LGBTQ community part of the discussion I'd add that there wouldn't have been a "community" back then. At least not that I am aware of or can imagine. The danger of openly admitting your sexuality would have made it impossible to come into fluent contact with anymore than one person at a time who shares your sexual orientation.
It fails to fulfill requirements of "community" even today, especially with arbitrary letters multiplication. "Subculture" is a much more fitting word.
Even in places where gay relationships and/or action were tolerated or even accepted, there was no "community", unless you count Japanese monasteries or male brothels.

The bible was not written in the middle ages though, the verse about human age is from the Psalms. It is possible that people living in the kingdom of Israel lived longer than people in the medieval period due to differences in lifestyle, the amount of wars and disease etc. The Bible verse "three score and ten years" means 70 years, which is longer than the life expectation of a medieval person that survived childhood (iirc less than 60 years), it is likely people in the Biblical times lived longer than people in the medieval times
Well, we know that Robert Curthose (William the Conqueror's eldest son) lived to the age of 80, but he spent a lot of his life in a monastery after his brother, Henry, defeated him in battle. You could argue that he was protected from the diseases and lack of food that many peasants would have struggled with.
People don't know which data to use when. For things such as life expectancy, for most the more useful information would be the median . Same goes for income and the like. If one resilient grandpa or one single billionaire significantly changes your statistic that much, it is fine for research and academia, but is not illustrative for the layman anymore.

I am 100% convinced the Anglo-Saxons washed every time they went in the house after finishing the chores. The probably had separate clothes for inside the house and for working outside, like most peasants. I lived on a goat farm. Dou you think I went inside smelling like a goat? I showered outside of the house 5 times a day. The people in that era probably washed in a backet or used a cloth/sponge and did the same.
I lived at the countryside for months where not everyone had actual showers, I worked restoring a windmill in the middle of nowhere we didn't have any telecommunications or even electricity (besides the generator we only used to power up tools). And somehow nobody turned into a piece of filth. We still had somewhat better conditions than people in the past, but those folks who cannot imagine hygiene without running hot water need a reality check.

I once had a coworker that believed that no one lived to old age in past periods. I tried to explain about infant mortality and how that would skew the stats regarding life expectancy. It was like talking to a rock.

One point that always gets missed is that the fact that taking baths was not very convenient for much of the year does NOT mean that they didn't WASH or cleanse themselves in other ways.

When my parents were children they didn't have hot water and the only heated rooms were the kitchen and bedrooms, so in winter they washed with sponges in the kitchen, where there was a wood stove, using hot water in basins . They could only bathe when it was warm enough, with heated water brought from the kitchen. Modern people are too snobbish and used to every comfort, they seem unable to even conceive of the fact that there are so many ways to wash that don't include having a heated bathroom at home.

I have gone on pilgrimage several times in Poland. The walks in general consisted of 9 days on foot and then bedding down in barns that kind farmers lent to us on the way. Sometimes we found creeks to wash in. Sometimes we took a basin of water and sponge-bathed in private corners. The result? We did not stink too bad, at least at the beginning of the day, and my acne improved. I found out that over-washing is bad for the probiotics in your skin, and I looked much better after learning to be frugal with soap and washing when needing it. I also went to washing my hair once a week, which greatly improved its lustre.
When I was at Mt Fuji in 1983 after an earthquake that severed our fresh water pipes, I still "showered" in the rain. I believe "medieval" people could adjust as well, if not better.

I think that it ultimately comes down to a fear of reality. I know that sounds absolutely crazy, but it's the only explanation that makes any sense at this point. Like you see these people, these conspiracy theorists, who say something like aliens exist or there's a cabal of rich people who diddle kids, then when there's credible evidence that comes out that those are both correct, they never talk about them again. Rather than having their beliefs vindicated, they just act like they never had those beliefs in the first place or they handwave them away.

On the topic of "LGBT" in historical eras, Linfamy (great channel about lesser talked about subjects in Japanese history) brought up a good point. To people in historical Japan (as well as probably most pre-modern places and eras) sexuality was not an identity. It was an action and/or a preference.
A man may have preferred sleeping with other males (often times, much younger males) but he didn't identify as gay. @PipeRhymes Nah, don't deny how it was taboo to do anything gay in most Abrahamic cultures for a lot of history. It was straight up illegal to commit homosexual acts in some US states into the 21st century. And still is in many places like the Middle East.
The whole identity thing is a very new phenomenon, done specifically during a time where categories offer protected status from moral inquiry and/or moral condemnation. People today are more or less inserting their current political and moral beliefs into the past in cases where this is discussed.

Politicians and community grassroots movements politicized it all for their own gain.
It's a sad state of the world where ones identity is defined by ones preferences rather than ones whole character. It's a very narrow way to think about yourself. "Oh, I like men. I'm gay. Ergo, if you don't like homosexuality you have to HATE ME! WAAAA! That's not right! I'm being attacked!" Rather than just accepting it as a small facet of ones existence it becomes the whole of it. The only thing I "identify" as is a human male who believes in the Lord Jesus Christ. Everything else is just small, tiny pieces that make up the patchwork of my life. Some of it colourful, some in tatters... but it's still MY life. I wouldn't be grounding my self-worth on any one small part of it. That leads to complete unstableness in everything else that I could do or want to be.

I like that you've coined the term "presentism", which is rampant among modern scholars and college students who won't even listen to primary sources about a given topic if it disagrees with their assumptions about the past. They will literally assume that they are the one's who know better than the human being (who by and large was educated and intelligent due to the fact that he was literate and his work has survived, meaning others found extraordinary value in it) who is telling us the way things were at the time. It blows my mind. Yes, some of these things can be unbelievable, as in the case of The Histories by Herodotus, but shouldn't we at least give him the benefit of the doubt rather than dismissing him outright? After all, he was there, and we know Herodotus wasn't a fool. It bears at the least an open mind and serious investigation. Keep up the good work!

I’m not sure if this is your field or not, but I’d LOVE for you to do a video on the theory of “two spirited” Native American people.
As a half Native American myself (Apache and Cherokee) I’ve NEVER heard of this “being” or myth from my elders. And trust me, the elders LOVE to talk and spread the truth about our tribes histories, customs and myths. For example; I’m very well aware of Deer Lady, or Stakinis, or Little People/Children, or the Thunderbird, or even skin walkers (although my tribe calls them by a different name and honestly I’m not supposed to talk about them or even mention their name or it’ll bring misfortune to me and I’ve had a bad string of luck lately as it is lol I’m not risking it)
There’s many more myths and legends, yet I’ve NEVER heard or read or been told about this “two spirit” being. But the LGBTQs have latched onto this “new” myth (new to me at least) and use it relentlessly. They’ve even added it to their lgbt alphabet soup! WTH?! Natives are very protective of their culture and legends and I’m sure they wouldn’t want this one, if it’s accurate anyway, used as a political symbol and a part of their agenda and rhetoric. Anyway, I recently discovered your channel. And as an avid history fanatic myself (ESPECIALLY ancient histories) I think this channel is amazing. I’ve been binging your videos since yesterday. Indigenous American histories such as the Aztec and Mayan empires and my own ancestral Native American histories are my favorite. But I also LOVE European and Egyptian history. (Especially Egypt, I find it fascinating how their empire being so far in distance and time to the Mayans and Aztecs but still have so many similarities.)

I'm Nigerian and have been very interested in history from my childhood. I was very fond of Western medieval history in my teen years. I'm in my fifties now and a professor in a university in Nigeria.
I can assure you that the amount of outright lies and ideologically directed misinformation about ancient, medieval and early modern European history that passes for academic work in my country is mind boggling.
Videos like yours help me point students to content that helps them see that reading the present into the past is simply poor scholarship.

My favored term for creators like Medieval Madness is that they are Chronological Imperialists. Note: This is not a term I came up with. It is similar to a term used by C.S. Lewis, "Chronological Snobbery". The use of Imperialism instead was used by Dr. Petter who is a professor at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Massachusetts, USA.

My Medieval and Renaissance professor basically told us that if a person made it to age 30, they would probably make it to their 60s or 70s without much problem. Childbirth and child mortality skews the shit out of averages.
One of the papers I wrote was on Gregorio Dati, who demonstrates that skewing of averages. Three of his four wives died from pregnancy/childbirth issues, and only seven of his 26 children were still living by the end of his diary, with the vast majority dying in childhood.

It's more nuanced than that. People didn't really do 'averages' back then, and certainly didn't count infant mortality in it. And we can easily see that people DID die young - we have the parish registers of lots of places in Christian Europe, the Curch was very stringent in recording everyone that was born, married or died. And the death rates are horrendous. In fact, you can do the test yourself: just go to a list of monarchs of any country and see at which age the medieval Kings and Queens died (and they were the most protected people of the time). You can discount the assassinated or killed in battle if you want, it makes little difference, people didn't live long. And woman's lower life expectancy came from the excessive deaths from childbirth.
In fact, even when I was a kid back in the 60s-70s, we considered someone in his mid-50s or 60s as 'old'. And it was quite a feat for people to reach 70. This was even worse in earlier centuries. Heck, just check the lifespan of nobles in the 17th and 18th centuries. The French King Louis XIV, for example, died four days short of his 77th birthday. This was enough for his successor to be his greatgrandson Louis XV, since his son had died at 49 and his grandson at 29. And Louis XV died at age 64, with was enough to be succeeded by his grandson Louis Auguste (Louis XVI), as his son had died at age 36. And none of them died assassinated or in battle.
Check all the lists of monarchs or nobles from all the countries you want. Before the 19th century, the death rate was very, very high.
Similarly to the information we have about life expectancy in Victorian London where the average life expectancy was 19.
Present day abortion of children reduces life expectancy in contemporary culture.
Three factors pose dangers to an adult: childbirth for women, war for men and famine and epidemics for the rest, especially the poorer population. It still did not mean people died in their 30s,. Based on the lives of some rulers they usually reached about 50-60 years of age. There were rare cases of people (usually hermits as pointed out by a certain Byzantine writer whose name I forgot) reaching 80 and 90

I did have a teacher as passionate in high school (and he actually traveled to those countries, especially East Europe/Russia in the 70/80s), and I am 60 years old. I appreciate that teacher for my own passion for history. His experience added to the "official" histories the text books mandated.

I've come across Medieval Madness before, and you're exactly right. His historical accounts are littered with this kind of hubristic presentism.
It's one thing to make comparisons between eras of history and now, I think that's okay to an extent, as it can help give one's audience a little perspective. It's quite another to make sweeping moral/ethical judgments about history based on modern ideologies. These judgements tell the audience much more about the creator's beliefs than they do about history, which in turn tells us rather a lot about the motives of said creator... And those motives aren't really about history at all. Sadly, this seems to be a very prominent characteristic of modern British historians (eg David Olusoga).
I'm not a qualified historian, just a pleb with interest in the subject... But I would much rather watch someone like, say, Histocrat, than someone like Medieval Madness. This is because Histocrat, despite his frequent mispronunciation of names and places, seems to be engaged and thorough. Most importantly, I never feel like the events he discusses are being used as some kind of cheap allegory to promote his own worldview or ideological leanings. Even if at times he might be inaccurate, it's always an honest mistake, not a contortion.
Medieval Madness, in comparison, often has this feel of assumed, unthinking superiority, like he is better than the historic peoples he discusses (particularly historic Britons, for some reason) while making massive general assumptions based on mostly inaccurate modern myths about the past, a lot of which can be debunked with extremely minimal research. This appears (at least to me) to be an exercise in mild propaganda, used in order to prop up (and highlight the 'superiority' of) certain fashionable beliefs of the present Western world.
Perhaps he is just very young. Things are always much more black and white at that age...

My understanding of the Dark Ages is that it was the time between the fall of the Roman Empire and the start of the Middle Ages. It is called the Dark Ages because no written records for the time can be found and we know very little about it.
As someone who has studied HEMA and carries gradings in Iaido I can say that there is nothing superior about Japanese Martial Arts as I've said and heard many times "there are only so many ways you can swing as sword". I transcribed Cavendish "Truth of the Sworde" with David Rawlings and some of the techiniques are extremely complicated and my father agrees whom has studied Japanese sword for over 40 years!

Goodness, I hope that channel has not butchered Welsh history. Cymru deserves better than that! Though I wouldn’t mind seeing Metatron cover Welsh or Scottish history. But truthfully, I am most excited for his next video on the ancient Celtic tribes.
There is a big difference between bathing and washing. A bath implies filling a bathtub with hot water, climbing in naked and scrubbing yourself with a bar of soap. How often did this happen? Depends on how rich you were, how much clean water you had access to, how much valuable firewood you could divert to heating that 20-gallons of water. Once a month? Once a year? Once a lifetime? We DO NOT KNOW because no one wrote it down.
BUT, a daily sponge-bath with a pail of warm water was proabably common, weekly to daily if possible. People DID try to remain clean if only to keep the demons away.

While of course there were some historical cases of pederasty between younger boys and older men that were meant to be their mentors, the vast majority of history, especially European history, was not like this. This is something that has been happening since I was in school, but it’s so much worse now. Let me use LOTR for example.

There’s been a running gag about the end of LOTR where Frodo and Samwise’s relationship had to be some kind of gay one because they show visible signs of affection towards each other. Now, any male affection or bonds of brotherhood, comradery, or of even love, is seen as male gayness. The left has essentially wiped out the concept that men could have bonds that are deeper than just activity sharing or friendship, and it’s done major damage to the concept of males bonding over significant events. It’s really terrible.
Agreed: all the more angering to me as LOTR was written by a devote Catholic who had very high moral and sexual standards... and they wish to insinuate that two of his most beloved characters were in a gay relationship. Infuriating. One can agree with JRR's stance or not: that's personal choice. But to have others accept your own opinions and choices, to turn around and force a change into a dead man's opinions and choices is beyond disgusting and hypocritical.
You see the same with the film versions of Captain America and Bucky, and of course, it's empowering for the LGBTQ+ community as it gives them more heroes on the big screen, but it's also incredibly sad and says so much about our era that any form of male friendship that goes beyond sarcasm and snark is considered to be a sign of homosexuality. Our model of masculinity is broken, frankly.
As a female, and having read LOTR, I just love how Tolkien describes the deep bond and friendship between all the members of the fellowship. The movie did it credit. Not once did I ever think for a moment that there was any suggested homosexuality. On the contrary, I loved the bromance and deep loyalty and friendship. I was utterly appalled, shocked and angry when, few years later, I came across this whole effort by a small minority to twist Tolkien's work to suggest there was all this gayness going on.
Power to all men who should be getting on with their male friends and comrades and get on with each other with deep friendship.

As an amateur historian, SCA Heavy Fighter(polearmer and spear) and fencer, and occasional referee for Armored Combat League events( similar to Battle of the Nations, or the History Channel's Knight Fight) I am very glad that I have found this site. In this so called 'information age' people seem even more ignorant than ever.
Hating people of the past for not knowing something we know now is the same as hating myself for not knowing how to do math when I was five. Both individually and collectively, we are who we are today only because of what we used to be. The past is part of us, whether pleasant or unpleasant. Denying the shadow denies the light, denies our very beings. The only thing we can do is embrace it all and choose which side to nurture, not which to deny. This should be the basis of all education.
Even better, assuming that what we know now is always correct and objectively better when society is on the brink. The next civilization will likely look at us with disgust.

Kyle Hill did a video recently on the AI generated pseudo-science channels and it got demonitized. If I didn't know better I'd think that TH-cam wants this kind of misinformation out there and even promotes it, but surely they wouldn't do that...

Then I'll make a comment about something being a "facepalm moment"...the tarot cards thing actually made me damn near collapse my skull from "facepalming" so hard. It wasn't even voluntary...as soon as I saw it my palm, as if tethered to my forehead and driven by a jet engine, simply smashed itself in to my facial area...it actually still hurts.

Humans being human, I assume there were some people who got excited about it but that most of the population either didn't know or didn't care, the same as they would today. I always get confused by the way some people think our ancestors were almost a different species to us.

I've seen a couple of this channel's videos and as a historical hobbyist (I read history for fun and got a college degree in it) I have to agree with Metatron's assessment.

That comment about the samurai being known worldwide made me wonder when he was talking about. Like, how would anyone know what skills the samurai had when they had no contact with most of the world for most of their history and even no contact with any part of the world in some centuries?

Regarding the LGBTQ community part of the discussion I'd add that there wouldn't have been a "community" back then. At least not that I am aware of or can imagine. The danger of openly admitting your sexuality would have made it impossible to come into fluent contact with anymore than one person at a time who shares your sexual orientation.
Absolutely, the community aspect of it is a 1990 thing, and even compared to that one, the current one has changed considerably.
It fails to fulfill requirements of "community" even today, especially with arbitrary letters multiplication.
"Subculture" is a much more fitting word.
Even in places where gay relationships and/or action were tolerated or even accepted, there was no "community", unless you count Japanese monasteries or male brothels.

Reminds me of a quote that a former boss of mine had framed and hanged up on his office wall. While I cannot recall exactly what it said, I do remember it stated something in the lines of: "When we read history we tend to put on glasses of our current time, and thus our reading of history is always skewered."

The bible was not written in the middle ages though, the verse about human age is from the Psalms. It is possible that people living in the kingdom of Israel lived longer than people in the medieval period due to differences in lifestyle, the amount of wars and disease etc. The Bible verse "three score and ten years" means 70 years, which is longer than the life expectation of a medieval person that survived childhood (iirc less than 60 years), it is likely people in the Biblical times lived longer than people in the medieval times
Well, we know that Robert Curthose (William the Conqueror's eldest son) lived to the age of 80, but he spent a lot of his life in a monastery after his brother, Henry, defeated him in battle. You could argue that he was protected from the diseases and lack of food that many peasants would have struggled with.

People don't know which data to use when. For things such as life expectancy, for most the more useful information would be the median . Same goes for income and the like. If one resilient grandpa or one single billionaire significantly changes your statistic that much, it is fine for research and academia, but is not illustrative for the layman anymore.

I am 100% convinced the Anglo-Saxons washed every time they went in the house after finishing the chores. The probably had separate clothes for inside the house and for working outside, like most peasants. I lived on a goat farm. Dou you think I went inside smelling like a goat? I showered outside of the house 5 times a day. The people in that era probably washed in a backet or used a cloth/sponge and did the same.
I lived at the countryside for months where not everyone had actual showers, I worked restoring a windmill in the middle of nowhere we didn't have any telecommunications or even electricity (besides the generator we only used to power up tools). And somehow nobody turned into a piece of filth. We still had somewhat better conditions than people in the past, but those folks who cannot imagine hygiene without running hot water need a reality check.
