    I went to school at Cambridge Ridge & Latin on Cambridge St in Cambridge, Ma.. After school I told my Mom, I going to the Bruins game, she ask me " do you have tickets" I said no, but I will wait for them, so after school, I took the bus to lechmere Station and then the trolly to North St station ( Boston Garden ), stood at the cancellation window for four hours just hoping for canceled tickets , more often then not, I got them, it did not matter what seat I got, just wanted in to see Orr play and boy did I. I am going on 61 years now and I can tell you I saw Booby Hull, Gordie Howe and Wayne G play, but in my eyes, these eyes saw the greatest hockey player to ever play this beautiful game called hockey, his name is Robert G Orr. I am so blessed to see this Kid play, God blessed me to watch him play. Thank you.

      The old barnyard, "Boston Gahden", had so many obstructed view seats, but looking around and finding any other empty seat was always the goal to see the best hockey player that ever played the game. Unfortunately, the ushers usually booted us from our seat if we didn't have a stub for that seat.

      18 yrs ago when I was turning 41 I found the address of Bobby's Agency in Boston and wrote him a letter expressing some of these same sentiments and thanking him for providing such incredible memories for those of us lucky enough to grow up watching him. I just wanted him to know what he and The Bruins meant to guys like us growing up. I never expected a response but not a week later I got a personally autographed 11x17 shot of The Goal with a Happy Birthday and thanks for the kind words. That man is the EPITOME of grace and class.

      Agreed, Bobby was at a whole different level - no athlete has ever dominated their sport the way Bobby did for 10 years. I consider myself so lucky to have grown up in the Bobby and the Big Bad Bruins. Years later I was lucky enough to be in a Sky Box with Bobby and I introduced him to a friend who had the perfect reply, I don't know whether to genuflect or shake your hand and he was dead serious.

    I was 6 years old in 1966 and prior to the NHL season, a elderly gentleman in neighbourhood, who had been watching hockey for some 50 years told me, "you watch this young player Bobby Orr for the Boston Bruins, he might just be the best hockey player you, or I have ever seen". A few weeks later i watched the first period of his first game in Toronto on HNIC... it was very exciting and I've been a Bobby Orr and Bruins fan ever since. I've been watching hockey ever since and that statement he made is still true to this day.

    The recent passings of Fred Stanfield and Tony Esposito have brutally underscored just how long ago the 70's were. But there was a time, God there was a time when we in Massachusetts could claim as our own, The Greatest Hockey Player of all time. And for 9 all too short years we got to watch him weave his magic all winter long.

    Bobby Orr skating up ice is like watching a ballet dancer. Just the right moves at just the right time. Precision in every stride. It was like Bobby had four speeds. He could skate it behind the net real slow they with 3 or 4 good strides he’s across the blue line a few more and he’s in their zone, now he coasts in from the blue line feeds it towards the net and Esposito scores. It’s poetry in motion. If only we had the medical technology we have today back when Bobby hurt his. No telling how many records he would have broken.

Gretzky might have the records, but no one changed the game like #4 did.

    I met Bobby when i was but a young lad in the early 90's. Even got to sit on his knees for a picture with him and Derek Sanderson. If i could meet him again, it would be to tell him that every story my parents would tell me about how great he was, inspired me to play hockey. Even if I didn't make it passed the PeeWee level, I had dreams of one day playing in the NHL for the Bruins and trying like Hell to be as great as him.

  • @msmith5121
    @msmith5121 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I was blessed to be able to watch Bobby's entire career as a young teenager in central Mass.....he is the greatest player that will ever play hockey and a greater human being. People talk about records that will never be broken in sports but for some reason Bobby is never mentioned in those conversations. But, what he did when he won all four major awards in hockey as a defenseman will never happen again. Winning the scoring title in the NHL and winning the best defenseman award the same year, which he did twice, will also never happen again. That feat just doesn't even make any logical sense yet that's what he did. I think Bobby Clark put it best when he said after seeing Bobby play, "he needs to be in one league higher than this one...". He also said Bobby Orr is what what all hockey players everywhere should strive to be like both on and off the ice. He wasn't flashy...he didn't need to be....he was just so much better than everyone else and still would be today.

    It's a shame that Bobby didn't get to finish his career. He was the Greatest defenseman of all time. Hockey fans got robbed of seeing an in his prime Bobby Orr against a young Wayne Gretzky . The two best at their positions going head to head would have been a great show. We can only imagine how great the show would have been.

    @dennishill8356 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I had the great pleasure to watch Mr. Orr play throughout his career. He had the asset which the top one or two players in the history of every sport has: a circuitry in his brain, a computer, that assesses every second of play. Each second every factor in the game was assessed, it's possibilities, vulnerabilities....on a second by second basis. So, any second, if the computer highlighted an opportunity to help his team - by scoring, passing. checking, shooting, fighting.... Orr would anticipate which series of actions would be required to achieve capitalization of the opportunity. You will only find this quality in Bobby Orr, Gordie Howe, Gretzky in hockey, George Best and Pele in Soccer, Willie Mays in Baseball.... one can add a few others.
    I am talking about players so skilled that the match in which they play splits into two matches: the one played by good and very good players, and the other match played by the god. The memory of Orr's play haunts one for life, continually taunting the good to mediocre efforts of the mere mortal such as myself.

    In 1971 Bobby Orr scored 139 points. to put that in perspective, Sidney Crosby‘s best year was 120 points in 2006. Ovechkin‘s best was 112 points in 2008. Nathan MacKinnon‘s best was 99 in 2018 Connor McDavid‘s has 134 points as of March 19, 2023. All these great players are forwards. Bobby Orr did it while winning the Norris trophy for best defenseman.

      Yes. Another perspective on it is that a defenceman will likely never win a scoring title again.

    Great video. So many great offensive clips, but it was on the penalty kill where he really showed his greatness. He was remarkable on the attack and people who never saw him play can see that in his highlights. However, much of the time you don't see a lot of footage of him on the penalty kill (great clip @ 23:18 - 23:32). He could take the puck and keep it for the entire penalty. He'd be skating circles around everyone and no one could catch him. Up and down the ice he'd go with everyone on the other team chasing him. The only player I ever saw do that. You won't see it today because there are so many strong skaters in the NHL. Back then he was truly a man among boys when it came to skating. He really didn't have an equal and if he chose to, he could keep the puck for as long as he wanted. Another thing people forget is how fierce and tough he was on the ice. He'd fight at the drop of a hat if you pissed him off. Arguably, the greatest all round hockey player there ever was when you take every thing he could do into consideration. He was great on offense, defense, special teams and he was tough and could fight in a day where you had to do so.

  • @kindsir2734
    @kindsir2734 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I watched him play as a hockey playing kid myself. I watch him now with the same fascination.
    He did this with skates the kids these days would be unable to skate , turn and stop in these days.
    Hockey when he played was not weak, there wear unbelievable good skaters, I skated with a few of them myself.
    I don't care to compare players, but the skills of then would only of been magnified these days.
    Bobby Orr, Bobby Hull, Beliveau, Keon.....etc would be a thrill today in the over strategized play of today. Hockey is less watchable these days and the creativity is nil.
    The Russia's in 72 patterned their play after Orr. These days all nations play a bland , overstuffed game. Maybe Conner Mcdavid will bring the thrill back. Cheers

      Fuck Milt Shitz. He was saying that to sell the game. The Flyers took two of those garbage expansion era cups from Orr and his intimidated Bruins at the height of Orrs career! If he was like the idiots say “tough” then how did he let that happen? The style that Orr stole from Doug Harvey only worked against garbage teams. He did all this without a helmut or shoulder pads , ten years later , he would leave the game and leave his mark. It would take most players to play twice as long to put up the same amount of points. bobby wouldn't leave the game from concussions but because of his knees. I'm sure many of us would have donated our own knees to see Orr play another ten. I thank Bobby Orr for scoring that iconic goal, cause otherwise I may have been a sabres fan, me being only 4 at the time, and cheering for the under dog. It is a wonderful dream to watch these highlights , thanks.

    Bobby Orr was never better than he was in the 1969-1970 season. He won the scoring title by 21 points. He never skated better or faster than he did in that season. He won the Norris Trophy as best defenseman, the Art Ross Trophy as the leading scorer, the Hart Trophy as the MVP, the Conn Smythe Trophy as the best play in the playoffs, he was named Sportsman of the Year, and (by far the most important to Bobby Orr) he won the Stanley Cup. No player before or since ever had a season like that. Although he got more points in 1970-71 and 1974-75, he did not win the scoring title in 1971 and in 1975 he was a dominant play more by experience and hockey smarts than by his sheer physical talent. He was outstanding but not as spectacular the way was in 1970. By 1975 he was noticeably slower (though still the best player in hockey), and after the 1974-75 season he only played 36 more NHL games, as his knees began to fail for good. All that said, Bobby Orr still insists that Gordie Howe is the greatest hockey player of all.

      Do you always refer to people by adding in their middle name? Saying Gordon doesn't make him great. Gordon is actually a goofy name in my opinion and it's pretty much why nobody names their kid Gordon. Who are the players on those AHL quality teams that Orr competed against on a nightly basis? Other then the All Star Habs and washed up Original Shits players can you name some great players on the Seals, Barons, Kings, North Stars, Capitals, Leafs, Wings, Flyers, Sabres, Penguins, Blues, Canucks and Flames all sucked. Just look up their goals for and goals against during Orrs time in the league. Orr was pretty much playing against AHL quality teams on a daily basis. There were only four teams each year that were competitive. Pretty much the Habs, Bruins, Hawks and Rangers and the Hawks and Rangers were poor playoff teams. Not much to be proud of Bobby! Prove me wrong! 1-2-3-4 POTVIN CUPS ARE TWICE AS NICE!

      Denis Charles Potvin led his team to 19 straight playoff series wins, ended the Habs rein of destruction on the AHL quality 70's teams, won 4 straight Stanley Cups, made the Conference Finals six straight times, made the Cup Finals five straight times and at one time held the title for highest scoring defensman in the history of the game. Denis Charles Potvin accomplished all of this in a league filled with great competition and great players. Orrs accomplishments were achieved in an AHL quality league filled to the rim with bums. 1-2-3-4 POTVINS CUPS ARE TWICE AS NICE.

    I recently heard a sportscaster say "makar’s the greatest defensemen since Bobby Orr". It’s not even an insult to Orr, and yet, uttering the name just seems so unfair. Many legends have said it, but he was meant for another league. I’ve never heard that claim of any other professional athlete... (possibly MJ). At his best he doubled the defenseman single season points total record… I know of no other greater gap set by a professional athlete.

    The scary thing is that we might have never seen Orr at his best because he had the beginning of the knee injuries even in his rookie year. Imagine him able to play in the Summit Series against the Soviets in 1972, imagine him without the bad knee in the Canada Cup of 1976 when he was Canada's BEST player in that series though he was literally skating on one leg - imagine him playing a full career instead of only half.

    That full speed tap in at 1.30 is remarkable. The reflexes and agility are almost super-human, and show how he truly played on a different level. It's also so heartening to see that, when he scores a nice goal, he acts like he'd done it before! The idiotic and childish show-boating that permeates sports today is pathetic and shameful. Nice to remember when there was a little humility and respect in a professional game, even in bruising, punching, teeth-removing hockey!

      Your buddy Potvin entered the league when Orr was in his prime (1973), thus Potvin was playing against the same competition was he not? What were Potvin's point totals lbetween 73 and 75?...a lot less than Orr's huh? The last full season Orr played (74-75), the Flyers won the Cup and the Sabres were in the finals. So there were more competitive teams than just the original six. If Orr had two solid knees he would have won the Norris Trophy 15 years in a row and probably 2 or 3 more scoring titles. Orr was the greatest player of his era..he dominated the game to the point of where it was almost embarrassing. Did Potvin dominate his era the way Orr dominated his?...who did the Islanders play in the finals?..cinderella stories like the North Stars, Canucks and the old Flyers. You can cherry pick every era..Gretzky played in a weak division and played the Kings, Canucks, Flames and Jets 20 times a year...20 games to inflate his point totals. The way to reconcile it in your mind is that every player had the opportunity to do the things Orr did in the 70s and every player had the opportunity to rack up points like Gretzky did in the 80s. But no one else did..there was Orr vs the rest of the league and Gretzky vs the rest of the league. It was what it was and it is what it is

    • @ghytgb
      @ghytgb 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      What were Orrs totals during his first two or three years in the league? I know Potvin had more points then Orr from 73/74 to 79/80. I can put some stats together too. Potvin won more Norris trophies while competing against Orr also! What else do you have? Potvin retired being the first Defensman to score 300 goals too. Potvin played well into the 80's with far more talent then the 70's. If there's anything else I can teach you let me know and remember four cups is twice as much as two. 1-2-3-4 POTVINS CUPS!

    • @ghytgb
      @ghytgb 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Flames took the cup in 89 and the Canucks were in the finals against POTVINS Isles. Orr got traded Potvin didn't get traded. Potvin easily stopped Orrs weak ass Norris trophy run in that AHL league and added two more unanswered Norris trophies. The Habs were transitioning from old timers to new players in the early 70's and it is why they didn't win the cup in 74 and 75. Potvin put an end to the Habs beating up on weak teams and stopped the bullying that the Flyers did to Orr and his so called "Big Bad Bruins". 1-2-3-4 MOVE OVER EVERYONE ITS THE REAL DEAL POTVIN!

    Esposito said that Howe was the greatest two way player he has ever seen/ Orr would play defense and then play forward on the same shift/ the opponent only was only allowed to bring the puck up the ice because Orr got tired of skating both sides of the ice/ he didn't stick handle around u he just would pass the puck and forth back to himself till he would pass it to a completely open man or just find a open lane to pass it to themselves/ he understood that the puck slides on the ice everywhere so unlike other players he really didn't need to stop it just move it to open areas

    I stopped watching hockey and just realized one of the main reasons why. There are some great players today but there aren’t any that are so much better than all of the others that you just have to watch them. Gretzky and Mario had this and you watched hockey just to see them but Orr was on an even higher level.
    I think the game is faster today but Orr was so much better than anyone in the league he’d still be the best today. Besides his speed he could effortlessly change direction like no one else could do. Even when injuries took away his speed when playing the Russians he was still voted the best player in the tournament because of his slower maneuvering, passing and shooting. He might still be the fastest player today but a slower Orr was still the best player then and he would be today.

    My family having grown up 8 miles from the “Gahden” have always been huge B’s fan and I am no different. I always heard how Bobby Orr was the greatest and stories about how he could skate. Being born in ‘86 I wasn’t able to see him in person (which is a lot different than on tv) but I’ve seen videos of it. The one thing I’ll say and it by no means is meant as disrespectful to Orr but the game today is much faster and the guys playing are bigger, stronger, quicker etc. plus I mean just look at the goalies, back then they played with the morning paper as their shin guards and now they have a lot more padding and yet are far better then the goalies of Orr’s era. The numbers bare that out. I still think Orr is the greatest player I’ve ever seen but to say he could do exactly the same things in today’s game as he did when he played I think is inaccurate to say the least. We will never know at the end of the day. I remember being stationed in Alaska for 3 years and going to the local college’s game in Fairbanks. Now that I live in NC (decided to stay here because Boston is too expensive and too crowded, plus as a fully disabled combat veteran my disability check wouldn’t have been enough to survive, it’s not much cheaper down here in terms of every day costs but housing and property taxes are cheaper, so I was able to buy a house down here for $160,000 that would’ve probably cost $500,000 back home) but here hockey just isn’t treated with the same love as we have for it back home and it’s a shame. People down here only care about college basketball and some like football but unfortunately I no longer support any of the sports except hockey (and I have respect for UFC even tho it’s not my thing) because I got tired of seeing the country I love and fought for get disrespected, on top of constantly being told that if you’re white (specifically a white male) then you’re the cause of all the problems in the world. They kneeled so I walked....that’s another topic for another time/place!

    • @bobby-jackbrewer7395
      @bobby-jackbrewer7395  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're absolutely right on several points - Yes the game is much faster today and it's continuously fast from the opening face-off to the final buzzer. Keep in mind that in the 70's, players stayed on the ice for long shifts, 3 mins wasn't uncommon, so they would float a bit and slow things down to regain some wind. Today the shifts are basically short bursts of high end speed for 30-45 seconds. Orr was the greatest player of his generation, I don't think a person would get much argument on that. Gretzky was the greatest of his generation. Gretzky also skated long shifts and would coast a bit. The goaltending difference is huge. All goalies drop to the ice for every shot, they play the percentages...rather than stop the puck with a body movement..they let the puck hit them. The goalie equipment from the waist up is too big and the trapper is over-sized. Look at a goalie pic from the 70s and 80s and compare it to today's goalies...#1, height is an automatic requirement to play goal now, (no more Rogie Vachons and Roger Croziers) # 2 the puck has to go high to beat them.....if a player is in tight to the goalie, it's difficult to get the puck up and over him. Bottom line, the players today are faster, more skilled and in better condition. The goalies are taller, they drop to every shot with equipment bulk from the waist up.

    It makes almost no sense to analyze Bobby’s play. The correct response is to sit there like an idiot with your jaw hanging open. I will say this, though: everything was a potential breakaway for him, because with his stickhandling and skating there were tiny areas of open ice that only he could exploit.
