Rest In Peace, Joey Burke. Joey owned this “Rink Rats” TH-cam account and posted this video. He was a college hockey historian, especially for BC hockey, where his Dad was the goalie on BC’s 1949 NCAA title team. Joey was a great guy and is missed by many.

First time seeing this since 1978! Great trip down memory lane! Its a shame it isn't available in NCAA On Demand but great to have it here!

@@SteveJones-g9n Good question! None of BU's 3 titles in the 70s made it to "NCAA On Demand" I understand they are older than the inventory usually in On Demand but the BU BC matchup features one of the all time great college hockey rivalries! That should definitely have made the cut.

Seven players from the 1980 U.S. Olympic Team played in the 1978 NCAA Tourney in Providence.
    Wisconsin - Johnson\Suter
    BG - Morrow\Wells
    BU - Craig, O'Callahan & Silk

Ahh the home of the Providence Reds. That just folded in 1977. Bet the new barn was happy to have some hockey back in the arena after a year of nothing. Providence is home to some of the oldest New England hockey history. And this day added some more!

Fidler was almost as great as an adolescent as Paul Coffey was at eighteen. Fidler skated like a pro and could have easily made Line Four on Team USSR back then.

      You probably mean Team USA?
Something clearly happened with Former between his FR and Soph
years because he looked no where near as good. Paul Miller made the NHL and clearly wasn't as gifted as Fidler.

How did Mark Fidler not make the NHL? It's hard to believe he peaked as a Freshmen. He had a higher PPG Avg than Mark Johnson in '77-78 and looked poised to cop a spot on the
      1980 US Olympic Team.
After Johnson, Pavelich and Broten he seemed like an idea on choice for the 4C spot. He looked
better than Mark Wells in the
      NCAA's.

At the time this was a rare National Title for the East. The OLD WCHA seemed to win the National title almost every year at this time. The old CCHA wasn’t a strong league at the time. In 1978 the NCAA did something they hadn’t done before. They had the option of adding a 3rd team from the east and west and they added one of these schools(can’t remember which one) as they had lost in the ECAC playoffs before the finals(Hockey East hadn’t been formed yet)

    • @paulsonj72
      @paulsonj72 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@vitodigregorio7918 1978 was the only year from 1977-1980 that they added a team from the east. They added a team from the west(CCCHA) all four of those years before expanding the field to eight teams in 1981.

@@vitodigregorio7918 And out west in 1978 Bowling Green got the home game as the 2nd WCHA team was Colorado College who was under .500 at 18-21-1. The NCAA also seeded BU 3rd in the East sending them on the road for that extra game.

It wasn't until RPI 1986 juggernaught that an

This BU team was a majority Massachusetts group
of players. Both Goalies were from Mass and 3 of the D. and at least 6 regular forwards were Massachusetts kids.
Some of them such as Craig, Johnson and Silk were the vanguard of the Orr boom. The BU title teams of '71 and '72 were majority Canadian skaters and neither Goalie was from Mass, although Tim Reagan was from RI.

    Joe Augustine can play.

    • @KMK7355
      @KMK7355 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Lamby and O'Callahan were better.
      Augustine would have been
the #3D on BU and #2 on Bowling
Green. Ken Morrow was the best D man in NCAA Hockey in '78 and for my money Joe Mullen was the
best forward. How it took 3 FULL YEARS after this game for Joe Mullen to get a full NHL season is beyond me.
If the NHL was played then like today, Mullen would have walked
onto most NHL Teams right after this game.

      Correct, he played at Matignon
with Cotter. In the 1977 EMass
      QF they beat my nephews
      Burlington HS Team with Fidler
scoring with under a minute left to thwart a great Burlington comeback in the 3rd period.
My nephew was a Sophomore and scored in the 3rd period.
The next year my nephew as a
      Junior beat Matignon in
3OT's to win the EMass title.
