This actually aired the same year as Columbine. It was supposed to air only a month after the incident. They actually pushed Earshot back to premiere months after the season 3 finale since it was still so fresh. Columbine was in April, the finale was July, and I believe this episode only came out late September 1999. So extremely relevant.
Apparently Jane Espenson, who wrote both “Band Candy” and “Earshot”, thought that too many people didn’t really believe that Joyce and Giles actually slept together, so she wanted to make sure there was no more uncertainty about that 😂
The bit a lot of people miss (and I did for years too) is Faith knows where the light switch is in the demons home. When you watch that back, you realise SMG’s acting is layered as realising what kind of monster Faith has become.
My God, the sheer DRAMA of that twist reveal when Angel says "second best" is just exquisite. The deep musical chord...the look on Faith's face...the SLOW-MO TURN. It should feel over-the-top, but instead it feels exactly correct for the moment. :)
I love that when people watch this, they are never sure if the Mayor actually cares for Faith or is just using her. Or both even. It's such a good mirror relationship to Buffy and Giles
Earshot is prime example why having "filler" episodes is vital for TV shows. This episode completely fleshes out and devolps the school and a bunch of it's non-Scoobies characters perfectly. Larry, Jonathon, Freddy, and a ton of unnamed characters to boot. But on the other hand they were working the cast 16-20 hours a day 6 days a week on Buffy, so they need to allow a show to cook for longer.
Random fun fact for today: The actor that plays Jonathan went on to create the show Empire. He also wrote The Butler and two of the Hunger Games screenplays!
Columbine happened on April 20, 1999. This episode was scheduled to air on April 27, but it was pulled from the lineup by the network after the shooting. It didn't air until September 21.
I remember watching this show in real time and being confused as to why I saw that episode after the season had already aired. I was too young to understand how Columbine would affect a show airing, now I totally get it.
Did you notice that Faith automatically reached for the light switch when she and Buffy entered the apartment? Because of course she knew where it is. Buffy probably noticed.
I think Earshot was one of the best episodes of S3. Even though the tone is very comedic in terms of Buffy being able to read minds, it deals with potential mass murder, and teenage suicide. The writers did an incredible job to match these two themes throughout. The embarrassment of Xander's thoughts, as with other teenage boys obsessed with sex, and Joyce's attempt to try and stop Buffy finding out that Giles had sex with Joyce are embarrassing and so funny at same time. Earshot is always a fan favourite, keeping up the quality of S3 episodes. Jonathan's attempt to commit suicide is of course stopped by Buffy, as she understands his angst and emotional pain. It was if course not shown on TV at time as well it coincided with the Columbine massacre. It was a brilliant piece of writing.
It also tries to show that everyone has an inherent, built in narcissism and selfishness, an unwillingness to share in others’ pain and suffering, not going the extra effort to apply empathy to others in favor of our own issues. Buffy tries to get Jonathan to see that everyone is going through more or less everything that he is. Brain chemistry is such a subtle and changeable thing, it’s a sadness that people kill themselves to solve what is a temporary problem.
Enemies was a super episode where the arc of the show kept building towards Graduation Day. Again we see Faith kill the Demon in cold blood, as Angel had said previous once she had the taste for killing she would not stop. The twist with Angel pretending to have turned again to Angelus was superb. Faith realising at last what she is up against is brilliant. The build up to the finale in S3 is incredible. All is gradually being revealed with the Mayor and Faith against The Scooby Gang. The second half of S3 is really when BTVS became a stellar show! Guys you gotta watch the last two together if you can, two stunning episodes for The Finale.
34:47 Earshot aired late, on September 21, 1999, because of the Columbine tragedy which happened around that time. I think the season 3 finale aired two months later than it was supposed because the tragedy was still fresh.
Columbine was in Spring, shortly before this was originally scheduled to air. Within a week or two. It was the first really big school shooting and shocked the entire country.
Fun fact: Anthony Stewart Head ad-libbed walking into the tree at the end. If you've ever listened to him talk, he's actually hilarious (and sounds so different)
Your reactions are so satisfying. The twin looks of realisation at the 'not Angelus' reveal and the howls of laughter at the Joyce/Giles info drop on Buffy...so enjoyable.
Enemies is a great episode. I love that we don't get clues about the twist, but on rewatch, you can see subtleties in the acting of both David and Sarah =) Also, I love Xander's shirt in Earshot! And I'm glad to see you're taking notice of certain stuff... that we can discuss in the future ;)
I love the Mayor, he's such a good villain. And Giles is so much more sassier in this season :D And only a show like Buffy would have a student's need for Jello be the thing to stop a school massacre
Earshot means a lot to me as an episode, I watched it as it aired in my very early 20’s first time. At the time it aired I was having major panic attacks daily. Part of it was believing everything I did was wrong and people hated me. Her conversation with Jonathon was like an epiphany moment for me. Everyone in the world is dealing with their own crap, people don’t think about you the way you think they do. As usually they are worried about how they are and what is happening to them in their lives🤷🏼♂️😊
It's all true, but we need to be reminded of it every so often. We always think our thoughts are mirrored in others about ourselves, but it's more like the thoughts we have about ourselves are the same thoughts everyone has. Give yourself a break. 😃
Buffy finding out about Giles and Joyce is such a classic bit. And I’m so excited you’re going to be doing Angel too, there are crossover events that wouldn’t make as much sense if you only watched Buffy.
The reveal in 3x17 always makes me happy when people are so SHOCKED! NO one did it like this series. And yes, 3x18 around Columbine, which happened one-week prior to when this episode was meant to air, and it was quickly pulled from the schedule. One other episode was delayed, as well. But this episode did not air until September 21, 1999, two weeks prior to the fourth season premiere.
Great reaction to two excellent season three episodes. Love the twist in Enemies, so good. And Earshot does such a good job balancing the humor with the serious issues of suicide and school shootings. And indeed, the Columbine High School massacre occurred one week before the episode was originally scheduled to air.
Cody & Sergio, "Earshot" was originally scheduled to be broadcast on April 27 ( after "Enemies" and before "Choices" but was postponed following the Columbine High School massacre on April 20, 1999. It ended up airing on Sept 21st just two weeks before the SE4 premiere on Oct 5th, after the summer hiatus.
The fact that you guys have already watched The Prom (one of my fave episodes of the entire show😭) means I just subscribed to your Patreon. Im not waiting lol!
16:22 Sergio’s face 😂 I couldn’t waiting for the reveal at the end of episode 17 so you could be put out of your misery lol. Such a good plot twist/reveal. was worth the wait lol
Actually, yeah. "Earshot" was originally going to air earlier in the season, but the day it was scheduled ended up only a week after Columbine, so they moved it back further to September instead of April.
"My life happens to, on occasion, suck beyond the telling of it." This is a quote I have used and still use a lot these days and especially after my dad passed away from cancer a year ago... (F*ck cancer!) It so damn true. I relate to Buffy and the rest of the Scooby Gang very much in different seasons and especially with Giles. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this show and ANGEL!! Thank you so much for reacting to this show (and CHARMED and soon ANGEL) so I, in a sense, can rewatch it together with you boys. It's so much fun and makes me feel better every Saturday and Sunday night. ❤ I have watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer so many times and at one point when I was a young adult I could pretty much quote the whole show! Can't do that now but when I watch it like this some memories of quotes come back to me! I realize now that it's because I'm autistic (late diagnosed in my 30s) and TV-shows and movies were/are my special interests.
Earshot is such a good episode. They didn't air it for the first time until summer reruns because it was originally set to air the week after the Columbine High mass school shooting, so they skipped over it until the summer. Cordelia, "I think it, I say it." it is so her, going back to "Tact is just saying not true things." And Oz having an philosophical existential crisis.
@@jeremykrueger7071 I'm loving the two episodes per video (I've seen the series like 12 times so I'm not missing anything lol). Yeah, there's a few episodes that feel like they NEED to have a full video dedicated to them. Hopefully they'll do it and should be able to tell which ones by watching them
For all that the mayor IS evil as heck...he isn't kidding with Faith. He DOES see her as a useful tool...but, being an immortal whose family died before most the characters were born, he has a special place in his heart for the idea of having a daughter...and Faith was it. He truly is evil, and seeks power and all that...but at the same time he worries for her, wants her to be well, and to be mighty. It creates a scenario that is hard for Faith to break away from...because no one in her life has been a genuine parent to her. If he were exploitative in some way she'd see him as any other man, a tool ruled by his junk...but the Mayor is EXACTLY what he displays himself as, no concealed intentions, no hidden agenda. Just ambition ...and parental affection. He gives Faiths dark impulses a place to come into play, and at the same insists on structure, a certain decorum, and focus. He is a dark opposite to the Giles/Buffy dynamic. As for Earshot...it was due to air just after the Columbine shootings happened. It was delayed exactly because it was far too sensitive an issue at the time, and for good reason. It is still a wonderful episode, but hard to watch...I think because for those of us who were there at the time...we all believed it might get better, that this was some horrible phase that would pass...and instead we simply watched it become normal...which is nothing any of us would have wanted. Decades later, its still hard to watch the reminder that internal agony is so commonplace, unaddressed, and harmful.
I remember when I was young reading a Buffy novel where she gets hurled into a future where the mayor won. One of the most powerful demon lieutenants of his is a transformed Faith. He got exactly what he wanted and he gave her exactly what he promised making her his right hand.
While Earshot was delayed in the US, it aired normally in Canada and so a bit of a bootleg exchange with VHS tapes was started up by Canadian fans to get the episode to American fans. Also super glad you will be watching Angel. I bet you will enjoy it as much as Buffy. I can't wait!
Climax and denouement of Enemies is one of my favorite sequences. Dushku and Boreanaz (and Gellar obviously) are so, so good throughout those wonderfully-written scenes. Iconic moment as the two girls draw knives to each other's necks. Then in the library, Buffy's clearly hurting as she says "It was just an act...", into her heartbreaking closing scene with Angel, wow. Cheers to Doug Petrie who joined BTVS and promptly wrote Revelations, Bad Girls and Enemies, superb dramatic stuff.
Xander saves the day again! First he makes the right guess about the lunch lady and then, his need for Jello makes him see it really was the lunch lady.
I did seven straight years of marching band..4 in high school, three in college. College was really fun..we had a huge band in two traditional blocks..we did both traditional stuff and also drum and bugle corps stuff..awesome amount of sound, great grad students did arrangements of Chicago tunes and all sorts of stuff. However, wanting to be in a symphony, I looked at my roommate as the freezing wet rain and snow soaked us in my third year in college at the last game of the season and said “ok..that’s it..I’m sooo done with this!” Looking back, I have no idea how I memorized all that different music and all those different steps for every different game. I think the funniest part of Earshot was how Cordelia simply said out loud every single thing she was thinking with zero filter whatsoever.
That moment where Giles says to Buffy "be careful" and Buffy's look (after years of trying to work out when it happened) tells me at this point Buffy and Giles have had a conversation and they know whats up and that they've also spoken to Angel and the shaman before she leaves with Faith. This episode and the reveal "second best", thr slow motion ... Unbeatable.
oh man I found that show icky lol even more so now with the Joss stuff. I get the show was supposed to be disturbing but that's not what I mean. How much did he want Eliza in sexy outfits and doing sexy dances, ick. Also, Eliza was the weakest of the cast, Amy Acker has a much wider range imo.
@@paulinerobertson6836I personally find Amy Acker a good actress. But her portrayal of Fred is an annoying, cheap parody of Willow. And I don’t like the character. Illyria is well acted, but her dialogue and storylines are terrible and contrived - although that’s not due to any bad performance from Acker. Just the material she’s given. I generally find Dushku a far better and more powerful actor. I suppose “more intense” is a more fitting way of putting it. She does tend to play very similar characters though.
I would love for y’all to follow the continuity order (there’s guides out there as people have mentioned already) but to give us 3 or 4 episodes per week instead of just 2. But obviously, that’s only if y’all have the time/energy/womanpower to do 3-4 episodes a week. If it will be 2, just follow the schedule of continuity and react that way, even if it means 2 Angels or 2 Buffys in a row 😊.
Two amazing episodes. Episode 18 is like a filler episode, but it still holds more weight than most filler episodes (at least in other shows) do. And it didn't originally air when it was intended because, as you guessed it, happened right after Columbine. And those conversations are as relevant as ever today. +20 years later.
Buffy seaslns 4&5 aired the hour before Angel 1&2, then Buffy changed networks. Columbine was a week before this episode was scheduled. It got pushed until the end of the summer, but it did air as scheduled in Canada, so a lot of the US fans watched copies from their feed.
Another couple of fun and interesting reactions. Earshot is an example of the quality and craftsmanship of the writing coupled with the execution by actors and production. Take a very dark and awful subject matters ( school shootings, teen suicide, and workplace violence) yet somehow have the story be entertaining. Then think about the patience with the story telling. Band Candy was Episode 6 and the payoff of Giles& Joyce was planned 11 episodes later and over 4 months in real time. Enemies is not just fun but a great character study and examination of choices and consequences of the decisions. Faith is not just complex but intentionally written for multiple conclusions to be reached. The framing is perfect for a character that can be viewed correctly by different people in different ways and all can be right, wrong, and incomplete. And that’s the point. Faith is an unfinished girl that is mixed up and controlled by her desires that do not give her satisfaction. She may be depressed, a victim that wants to victimize, a good person that does evil or an evil hearted person that does good things for selfish reasons. It’s hard not to be drawn into the world of Faith but do enter at your own risk. Lastly, Faith when she is with Buffy can make Buffy seem both morally superior and selfishly arrogant depending on the person watching.
so the episode earshot, which is so disturbing even though it has funny parts, was set to air a week after columbine. obviously it was filmed beforehand. but it was pulled for obvious reasons and aired in September before the start of the next season. interesting that you mentioned columbine since that was this exact time. i remember being in high school when school shootings were getting really popular. i was in high school when this aired. I'm from Oregon so we had one the year before, a shooter named kip kinkle. i remember what a huge deal it was. now there's so many shootings its hard to keep track. and that's horrific.
Rewatching Enemies knowing the twist, you can actually see the subtle layers of David Boreanez’s acting, you can actually tell that it’s Angel acting but it’s so subtle you don’t see it when you don’t know.
Cody & Sergio, I'd like to see your "Angel" reactions uploaded to TH-cam ( after them being on Patreon first ) so all of can see them and be apart of your Angel journey.
I'm sure someone else will have posted it already, but Earshot (the episode where Buffy hears someone threatening the students) was scheduled to air within a week of the events at Columbine. Needless to say, it was pulled and only aired just before the next season started.
That twist in Enemies always gives me chills and I love watching others experience it. The schedule with Angel could be Buffy on Friday nights, Charmed on Saturdays and Angel on Sundays?
So I love these 2 episodes especially earshot. I'm sure somebody else will mention it but it was not originally aired because columbine literally just happened before they were gonna air it so they pulled it. And then they did in a barrier of course it's on like the DVDS. I think that was probably the biggest laugh I've ever seen out of TH-cam when Giles walked into the tree after Buffy zinged him
I was in high school when this season of Buffy aired, and others have already commented but this episode was supposed to air literally a week after Columbine. This show became unexpectedly prescient with this ep.
I admit u have to watch buffy season 4 and the first season of angel cuz there is a fair bit of crossover in the first season of angel. But u have to watch it in order so u might have to make it one ep of buffy and one of angel together if u watch two episodes u will get lost and the story will be disjointed and not make sense. In season 5 u can go back to watching double episodes of buffy. BTW love your reaction to one of my favourite shows I’m a massive buffy nerd read the magazine collected the cards traded the cards with friends who also collected I think I spent a lot of my 15 year old pay check on buffy merch 😅
I don’t love the Angel Character in Buffy but Angel the show is sooooo good. Despite loving both I actually like Angel a bit more than Buffy. I’m very excited to see you guys watch that as well.
in Buffy and Angel next season, there are a few episodes you should avoid watching the opening title song, and a few who's titles you shouldn't know until after you watch the episode because of spoilers. There will be people who can help you know witch those episodes are.
Demon trade? Mayor’s ascension plot thickens. Not Faith trying it with Angel 🤦🏽♀️ Love Willow/Buffy pep talks 💚 Not them taking his soul away AGAIN 😭 Okay but Angel punching Xander just because was hilarious 😂 Ahh the double cross! Loved it! “You still my girl?…Always” 🖤 The watcher rivalry continues. The group leaving when Wesley starts talking 😂 Not Buffy getting infected! Oz continues to be the best. “Their spelling’s improved” 😂 And his hair is back to red again. I feel like I should have a counter for every time it changes back & forth. Still find the Wesley/Cordelia thing unsettling. Demon hype sounds like a cool band name. Willow being into basketball 💚 Buffy reading minds! Everyone’s thoughts, Oz, Xander’s 😂 I love Oz’s philosophical thoughts. It would suck to have mind reading thoughts in a high school especially. Love how Cordelia just says what’s on her mind 🙌🏼 Love Angel fight scenes! Buffy finding out about Joyce/Giles! The Xander/Lunch lady stare down tho! Really heavy scene with Jonathan. Glad Buffy talked him down. Curious to see where the story goes from here. Loving the reactions as always! 💚
I would really love it if once you begin reviewing Angel y'all do one episode of Angel and one episode of Buffy per TH-cam video just as it aired way back in the day on the WB and the way the universe intended the content to be consumed ❤
You wondered how close Columbine happened to that episode, it happened the week before. Because of that, this episode didn't air until a while afterwards. Obviously they placed it back where it should be, but it was advertised as a lost episode when they did air it
So excited for you to start Angel. I think, if you want to keep it at 2 episodes a week, just do what you have been doing except go in timeline order of Buffy/Angel episodes. There are a couple different “official” timeline lists but whichever one you pick should be ok. I know doing it this way would mean that some weeks we could have 2 episodes of either show or 1 of each but I think it would work fine this way. ❤️ Also fun fact, I know you guys kind of giggled about it, but the way that Wesley pronounces Angelus is actually correct. The actors on Buffy went a bit rogue with the pronunciation but they do better to say it correctly on Angel.
season 3 ended may 1999 and Buffy and gang are headed toward graduation as class of 1999 so yeah, strange time for national school violence. Some episodes were not aired for several months following Columbine.

Damn that's a great two episode chunk. I'd love it if you dedicated a full video to the season finale.
I respect their format, but them not dedicating whole reactions to restless or the Gift is going to annoy me, no matter how good the reaction is, lol
Two bangers.
Love Buffy speech for Jonathan.
Many funny scenes with her reading minds... Joyce and Giles exposed lmfao.
We also shared it online.
I don't think I've ever seen you two looked so shocked when the big reveal of Angel being himself was revealed. Great reaction.
I yelled Xander's name at exact sametime you guys said his name too with the jello part
Two iconic episodes! I love your reactions to Buffy
"Earshot" is arguably on of the best episodes in an already great series. Can't wait to see you bois react to "Hush"
So glad you guys are doing Angel!
Buffy reading minds priceless
"I just wanted something to love." Another sign of Faith's childhood abuse. She never felt love from anyone.
Unbeatable.
You MUST watch ‘DOLLHOUSE’. It’s another Joss Whedon show starring Eliza Dushku, and it’s so good.
Also “Tru Calling”. That’s another good one with Eliza Dushku.
It's nice to see people appreciate "Dollhouse" because the understanding wasn't there when it first aired.
oh man I found that show icky lol even more so now with the Joss stuff.
Giles walking into a tree was ASH own idea.
Omg Sergio I love your hoodie
I would love for y’all to follow the continuity order (there’s guides out there as people have mentioned already) but to give us 3 or 4 episodes per week instead of just 2.
But obviously, that’s only if y’all have the time/energy/womanpower to do 3-4 episodes a week. If it will be 2, just follow the schedule of continuity and react that way, even if it means 2 Angels or 2 Buffys in a row 😊.
Yesssss. Angel. I’m HERE for it ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Two amazing episodes.
Yay! Looking forward to Angel reactions !
Can’t wait to see what y’all have in store store for us once Buffy and charmed are finished
Did you notice the “boy demon” joke?
2 brillant piece of TV at the same time...My god, I love season 3. Can’t wait for S5 and 6
Cody & Sergio, I'd like to see your "Angel" reactions uploaded to TH-cam ( after them being on Patreon first ) so all of can see them and be apart of your Angel journey.
I love buffys speech to johnathan ❤
This is such a good pair of episodes!!❤❤
Enemies is my favourite episode to see reactors react to. That "second best" line 😮
This season is almost over!! I'm sad but can't wait for them to hop into season 4!!
I just wait for season 5 and 6... they are so not ready
@@guilainefeutchine886 Oh definitely, I've been ready for 5 and 6 since they reacted to the first episode of season 1 😂❤
I think that was probably the biggest laugh I've ever seen out of TH-cam when Giles walked into the tree after Buffy zinged him
"Second best"👏🏻👏🏻
Looking forward to these. 😁
I was in high school when this season of Buffy aired, and others have already commented but this episode was supposed to air literally a week after Columbine. This show became unexpectedly prescient with this ep.
My favorite season so great episodes
Yesss please to angel ❤
The power Buffy! got of reading peoples thoughts this episode reminded me of Charmed! when prue got that same power and it was driving her insane.
I lost most of my merch through various moves over my lifetime but I still have my Buffy Official Fanclub membership card in my wallet 😅❤
I don’t love the Angel Character in Buffy but Angel the show is sooooo good. Despite loving both I actually like Angel a bit more than Buffy. I’m very excited to see you guys watch that as well.
Angel on Buffy: 🗿
Angel on Angel: 🥸🤡🤑
in Buffy and Angel next season, there are a few episodes you should avoid watching the opening title song, and a few who's titles you shouldn't know until after you watch the episode because of spoilers. There will be people who can help you know witch those episodes are.
He’s been in charge of Sunnydale for 100 years
Demon trade? Mayor’s ascension plot thickens. Not Faith trying it with Angel 🤦🏽♀️ Love Willow/Buffy pep talks 💚 Not them taking his soul away AGAIN 😭 Okay but Angel punching Xander just because was hilarious 😂 Ahh the double cross! Loved it! “You still my girl?…Always” 🖤 The watcher rivalry continues. The group leaving when Wesley starts talking 😂
Not Buffy getting infected! 💚
Love it 😂
I would really love it if once you begin reviewing Angel y'all do one episode of Angel and one episode of Buffy per TH-cam video just as it aired way back in the day on the WB and the way the universe intended the content to be consumed ❤
You wondered how close Columbine happened to that episode, it happened the week before. Because of that, this episode didn't air until a while afterwards. Obviously they placed it back where it should be, but it was advertised as a lost episode when they did air it
"I introduced him to his wife", I need that story!!! GILES!!!
Damn, I was crazy to watch your reaction to the "was it a boy demon?" joke
So excited for you to start Angel. I think, if you want to keep it at 2 episodes a week, just do what you have been doing except go in timeline order of Buffy/Angel episodes. There are a couple different “official” timeline lists but whichever one you pick should be ok. I know doing it this way would mean that some weeks we could have 2 episodes of either show or 1 of each but I think it would work fine this way. ❤️
Also fun fact, I know you guys kind of giggled about it, but the way that Wesley pronounces Angelus is actually correct.
The lunch lady, one of the most obvious stunt doubles
So excited you will be watching Angel!! It is such a great series.. (I ended up liking Angel over Buffy).
I will be tuning in for sure 🖤🖤
