A couple of things I know about CA glue. Back when I worked, I did an air quality permit for an MDF plant and CA glue was the adhesive, and I got a good overview of the entire operation. They buy CA in 55 gal drums, (then about $200/drum), mix it with powder fine sawdust and blow it through ducts to a vacuum press. Zap it with steam and bang.... cured. CA glue hardens because of moisture. The plant I worked for was in New Mexico and at altitude for a reason. Cold air is dry by definition, and high altitude is low pressure air is dry. (The plant was at 5 or 6,000 feet.) If you have ever camped in the desert, it gets cold at night. My point being control your environment and you control the set time for CA. So if you want to do more CA bows, get an air conditioner in your shop or do them in Winter. (Cold air is dry air.) Always use kiln dried wood...... (BTW, war story for this mill..... A thunderstorm came through one afternoon and they had a 50 ft. of 4 ft. duct work solidify with the press charge....... Bang-solid)
I'm amazed that the superglue held up. I thought the glue would have been to brittle and started to crake. This is amazing and thank you for trying different bow making material.
I love this series of episodes. Some are completely crazy and just for fun, but some of them give some great options for some of us who are interested in the craft but don’t have the budget to get top of the line materials.
The bow I was currently working on lifted a splinter, if not to say half-way cracked one entire limb. This is the motivation I need to start over again. Way to go, Kramer.
Makes you cry when it happens right . Lol . Had a beauty i finished . Tillered out and all . First full pull to actually shoot it and it exploded. Just stood there for a minute like a bird shat on me . Lol.
Hey Kramer, I love your content especially the ones using oak wood because then I can attempt to do it as well. I love the fiberglass backing I think I will pick some up off of your website so I can try it on my next bow build. I also have a request/suggestion on what you should make next. I think it would be cool if you could use the fiberglass and a oak board and make a reflex deflex with limb tips. I think this would be great because viewers like me can have a new change to try and make your bows with supplies that are easy to get your hands on. Also if you get board sometime I made a bow and DM you on Instagram pictures of it. It was replica of your 15 dollar bow build with the fiberglass drywall tape backing. Thank for all the great content!
About 3 minutes in and I'm reminded of Adam Savage and how he talks about CA glue. My suggestion would've been to use a thick CA glue so it wouldn't dry too fast and it wouldn't soak right into the wood.
I started watching your videos a month ago. Now I have built 3 bows and have 2 more laid out. Next week I will be processing some bamboo for backing and picking up an osage log for making staves.
You can get CA with additives that will both slow drying time AND leave it flexible when it's cured. The thicker gel CA has rubber in the mix, it will do nothing but help.
Crazy that it holds so well . Did used to dangle a man from a crane with one drop lol. . Commented somewhere to use fishing poles. Three one either side (front ro back , brick layer in the handle section and used a a backing . Heck . Saw someone do it with a dang hanger . . Im ready to assemble my limbs now for the take downs . Got the risers down . Thanks dude as always.
I started my first board/laminated hybrid thing bow today, got it to floor tiller stage without a backing and decided to add a 2 layer paper backing. So far everything is looking good and I'm looking forward to shooting a paper backed 72' longbow made from Tasmanian hardwood and Australian white oak.
Hey Kramer, I challenge you to make a double limb Penobscot bow with a twist of your great handles - I think this would be really interesting project :)
Hello Kramer, i've been watching your videos for many moths now and I can't stop to notice that very often the audio levels in your videos seem to be a bit off for me. I have the impression that the levels of the music are louder than your voice tracks - Maybe I'm the only one who has that feeling, I don't know. It leaves me with constantly fiddling the volume of my computer when I watch (& enjoy) your videos. Keep up the good work, you have a very nice presentation style :-) Don't overcomplicate the editing ;-)
Leave more then you want is a great tip, as making a bow too light then one needs to add more layers of fiberglass to build up the bow or use some kind of wood as an extra layer for the bow.
Just a note about superglue exposure to the eyes. You can get past it now, but it will screw you up later. I had to get someone to enter this comment for me, because of this type of exposure to CA 15 years ago.
Have wondered on the types of epoxy and adhesives would be useful for making a bow, the bond and the flexibility of the adhesive could be all over the place depending on the type.
90% of everybody is using smooth on EA -40 epoxy. The stuff is amazing . With strength and flexibility. But works even better if you build a heat box for better curing . Ill take 6 hrs at 180* over 24 hrs then another 5 in the box at 145/150*. Ive never had one come unglued .
Every time I see your tillering tree up against a wall, I keep thinking how much it would help (me, at any rate) to see if the limbs are bending evenly to have a backing (say, 6 x 3 feet, paper, poster board, whatever) with evenly spaced lines. If you do lines in colors, say five colors, black, red, blue, orange, and green (easily obtainable Sharpie marker colors), you could then see almost instantly if the limbs are coming down to the same line on both sides. Or, is there something I'm missing here? Are both limbs going to come down to the same line even if one side is stiffer and still needs wood removed to make it bend evenly?
Have used Crazy glue for fletching (sparingly). One glue that is not good for fletching is Gorilla Glue. It dissolves the quill. E6000 works from Walmart.
Well, it has been two years, Krammer, do you still think the super glue is a viable adhesive? I have the materials and just waiting to start. Also what is a good epoxy to use at room temperature and doesn't require a heat box?
So is a glass backed board bow with the right adhesive a pretty good idea? I mostly only see glad being used on laminates. Someone tell me if that’s an A Okayv
And mine. My experience with CA is that after a few months, it loses strength, presumably because it's chemically unstable or is degraded by sunlight and maybe oxygen.
Well superglue is a fun idea but if you want realy fast I think contact cement would be a good option, dont realy have to worry about it drying but there is no adjusting
I noticed your arrows kick out a bit could you do a tune a bow to arrow vid. I’m sure you have a ton of arrows around and just grabbed one in the shop for quick test shot.
Kramer, I'm new to archery and love it. I am also 63 years old and thought a 30 lb long bow would be my best bet to purchase. However; It seems to be a little heaver for me. My hand starts to shack after a bout 3 seconds after the draw. Is there a way to decrease the draw wright of my bow. It is a 60 inch Black Hunter long bow? Thanks Billy
If you have access to a actual wooden part of the belly you should be able to lighten it up . Just follow Kramer's tillering video. Fiberglass store bought and its a different ball game . You still can . But on those I believe you tiller by thinking the with not the thickness. Ive been doing it for only a year now . Amd made 12 now thanks to him . Only had two explode . Did his deflex-reflex recurve and ended up with a deflex-reflex-corkscrew recurve . Will still shoot straight but looks like a cyclops made it brahahaha . Im better now. Lol
Has anyone tried using PL400 or loctite PL3x construction adhesive? Im backing mine with .040 glass but really dont want to spend 80 bucks for pint of 2 pt epoxy so looking for some info for using something else as a cheaper alternative since it is my first bow. Thanks for any help or tips...😉
Oh I am thinking of for my new Recurve bow to get the weight up to weight for my draw I was going to buy a single piece of fiberglass to glue to the already fiberglass backed bow. Right now I am getting 33 pounds off my Draw but I need to get better with said bow first to see if it is not just me not being quite strong enough for the bow weight.
@@Morrow45105 Yeah I thought since I could shoot my other bow a 36 pound all fiberglass flatbow type longbow all day if I wanted, I could use the recurve bow just fine going up 9-10 pounds in weight.
Kramer: uploads a video that keeps showing the shatterproof archery caps Me: why does he keep showing shots of the caps? Also me: dam I kind of want one
Ok bro. Look, to do a good comparison both must have good arrow flight. Neither did as far as I could tell. You need to try this build by the way you shoot. This means build the riser around your center of your string. At the center of your string should be your pull point. Usually between your index and middle finger. Then your arrow above your index finger with a nock point. This should put your grip slightly higher than normal with a shelf, slightly higher also. The reason for this build is to maintain a equal draw across both limbs. If you are not drawing from the center of a equal tillered limb bow, you will have a unequal force on each limb, giving poor flight. I hope this helps
I really like your videos information, and teaching but if I may, please put the music volume low or no music at all would be great, and your voice higher. Because we want to listen what you say, but always need to put the volume more high when you speak and much more low with the music on, better to listen the tools work😉

Because of your videos I'm currently building my 4th bow... And started archery classes... 1st broke tillering, second broke after 200 arrows, 3rd one still shooting. 4th got fibreglass backing on oak. Used titebond though. Keep the content coming!
He IS a pretty awesome inspire-er . Ive made twelve with only two to explode. And have moved up to fiberglass laminate takedowns. Working on number two and three now . You can say . Yeah . Im hooked .
It may be fun, but it's going to shoot far more slowly than a shorter bow. Sure, you can make it with a heavy pull, but those sorts of bows are just not fun to shoot because after 10-20 shots, you're done for the day. And it really wears hard on the arm and shoulder joints,

Hey bud your becoming my favorite bow maker, great stuff. Where do you get your fiberglass at?
Nice one pal.
Lighter limbs may make it faster than poundage indicates.
Awesome video👍🏻👍🏻
Does fiberglass tape help with speed as well???
Dude this is awesome, can i request a heat treating boards before backing video? I'm experimenting with it my self but id like to your take on it!

Something I liked about his old space was the cinderblock wall, it made it easy to see how the limbs were bending in relation to each other!
Can an older bows be shaver down in width to decrease poundage? Great show
I would have thought it would have been to brittle. Is it still holding up?
Is that frp? The same stuff counter tops are made from ?

Is ca glue the best to use for the oak board and Bearpaw fiberglass backing
I've been looking into oak wine barrel staves. What do you think? Would they bow?
Hi @kramer, After 3 years, how is the Superglue Bow today?
Can I use super glue with fiberglass tabe layers and pine wood or softwood?
Any review on how this bow is holding up?
Think with the ca glue putting some down clamp more clamp and work your way down. But I’m just at gluing now. Let’s see how it goes. Lol
Know what makes a fantastic arrow rest overlay? The fuzzy side of self-adhesive industrial Velcro. Lasts for many years.
Nice video and awesome bow!🏹 By the way quick question, what knot do you use for your tillering string?
You might even include an option of buying a wood veneer to cover the fiber glass up with just to create a stealth speed bow...
Awesome!
what glue is best to use?
Interesting thing about CA: Part of the curing process emits acetic acid. That's why your eyes were burning with all the CA kicking off.
So is a glass backed board bow with the right adhesive a pretty good idea? I mostly only see glad being used on laminates. Someone tell me if that’s an A Okayv
I absolutely love the videos Kramer 🔥🔥👍
My prediction. Yes it will bow today, but it continues to harden and won't in the future.
Good question . But shouldn't he know by the end of the day if full cure is 5 hrs I think he said ?
And mine. My experience with CA is that after a few months, it loses strength, presumably because it's chemically unstable or is degraded by sunlight and maybe oxygen.
