    Here's a crazy off the wall thought. Could you use theraband as a backer?? It has lots of stretch and contraction....just a thought. Great stuff!!!

      You just made me wonder if the elastic bands use for slingshots might be an option. The wide ones used for physical therapy are pretty much the same and come in varying amounts of tension to stretch.

      SomeOne is a Physical Therapist here. ... You can put it on if there is another backing, as a decoration. But not so good on its own. Yes I tried.

      Adhesion, longevity and susceptibility to heat/cold and determining "pre stretch" are only some of the issues and variables, the best backings have little stretch and high tensile strength.

      From what i have seen first hand yes if done right it will work, use epoxy not wood glue. I didn't build the bow, it was built in Alabama by a professional bow builder.

    The elastic properties of flex tape are in one direction only. Since it does not recompress itself it is only a matter of time till it is stretched out from normal use of the bow. Arguably it will never get past tillering to it's full draw and it will already be spent. As a safety material it will work and likely stop a dangerous explosion, but it won't ever provide performance either.

      My thought is that Kramer uses small overlapping layers of the tape like 6 inch sections.

    Can you make video on how to finish the bow handle

  • @ericsmith1508

    There's a flex tape type product that is essentially fiberglass strip impregnated with a water activated resin compound. You have to soak it in water for a few minutes to get it activated and then apply it to what you intend to repair. It is market as a quick "permanent" repair for tool handles and plumbing. It only has like a 5 or 10 minute working time once fully activated so you'd have to put it on the unfinished stave pretty soon in the process, but I imagine it would still be done in roughly the same time frame that you applied the flex tape in this video. When I saw the title for this video I thought that was what you would be using, as I, myself, have often theorized that stuff would probably make a great bow backing material. I have used it to make the very types of plumbing repairs it is advertised for. In the adds they would show it being used to repair an 8 or 10 pound sledge hammer handle and then using the hammer, or an axe handle and then cutting wood with axe. It's strong stuff! The obstacle I always feared with it, would be that perhaps that strength would make it too stiff to make a proper bow backing. It's made by the same company as the stuff you use in this video but I can't for the life of me remember the exact name of the product. Maybe they don't make it anymore and what you used here is the new version of the product I am talking about. I don't know. If you see this comment, and if you can find the stuff I am referring to, perhaps you could try again with something less stretchy.

    Hi, i am from Serbia and i have been following you on yt ever since you posted first will it bow video, and i am a big fan ever since. Your videos were different from any other videos i have watched at that time. Every video about bow making was the same but yours were different, you used some other materials and you were not afraid to try something different, something new and unusual. And I admire you for that. And i have an idea, or rather i have something new for you to try, a material that i think will work as a bow backing...maybe 😄
    The material is pertinax or fr3 or fr4, its a material used for circuit board. Its a material made from resin and glas fibers just like fiberglass. So maybe for your next will it bow, you can try this one.
    I wish you all the best and just keep going frend. 😉

    Apply the flex tape perpendicular to the way it was applied in this video. If it is mostly flexible one way, it may add the strength and flexibility of need to be a good backer. It will just take much longer to apply, with it being multiple small pieces layered in just right.

    Damn, brother! I'm shocked you even took on that project. Flex tape just comes off to me as glorified jumbo-sized electric tape, basically something that can be used as a pretty covering for something, but not as something that can improve structural integrity. Have you tried using carbon fiber or Kevlar for the backing and something like PVC decking for the body? I think a combo like that might yield some very pleasant results.

    Cactus Jack: Watching you tiller a bow on your tillering rig I wondered how you judge the flex of each arm. It looks like it is somewhat subjective as in ‘by eye’. Do you think a series of horizontal lines drawn on the wall out past the tips of the bows would give you a better measure of the relative flex of one arm compared to the other?

    Flex Tape, a marginal product at a premium price. It stretches, then does not spring back, rendering it useless for a backer and probably most applications where strength is needed. A Gaffers tape would work better (heavy duty duct tape). Not a lot of stretch, therefore better to assist the wood. Fiberglass packing tape has about a 1200 lb rating for strength, that would be nearly ideal. As it's not UV resistant, it'll need some shielding. FYI, anything from Flex company or from Gorilla company are more hype than results. Lots of tests by TH-camrs show that. Project Farm being one of the most extensive testing sites.

    I was just browsing the garden section at my local store for stuff for my bonsai garden and bird feeders when I saw hardwood garden stakes some as long as 6 foot. They are the right kind of wood already have some of the right features and shape to them, but they are a bit thin for a bow. My question for you is, will they bow?

  • @pauljs75
    @pauljs75 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Rayon/nylon or similar fibers pulled from the back side weave of scrap carpet remnants found at some curb. Pull that straight and glue it in line with the length of the bow, and then flex tape over that. Flex tape may have some property nice as a covering or wrap, but too much stretch on its own.

    I bought a bow in a store a few months ago and when i tried to put the string on the upper part of the bow (3 part bow) did split, so there were 2 layers and they split partly...not the whole length but about half of it, can i fix that with glue and clamping it together and if yes, which kind of glue should i use?

  • @pilz91killerplauze
    @pilz91killerplauze 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Kramer,
    maybe some thoughts on your video, that might help to understand, what is happening from a technical/mechanical point of view.
    Just ignore if you already know these things ;-)
    I just saw the beginning of the video and i was 99% sure this will be an attempt that fails.
    From a mechanical point of view you don't want any plastic yield/plastic deformation on that backing.
    And this tape seems to be nearly just plastic deformation and no elasticity. So this backing would have a very small effect to the strength of the bow anyways. (Since the deformation-energy is transformed into plastic deformation and will not be transformed into kinetic energy of the arrow)
    I think the main reason for some attemps to fail (not only this one) on this series is, that the distribution of stress in the cross-section of the bending arms is not ideal like with the ones with bamboo backing. The IPE wood is good for compression stress and the bamboo is perfect for tension stress. Since these bows are about 50/50 in width-percentage the stress is distributed perfectly and the glue layer in the middle gets nearly no stress - since there is a zero-crossing of the stress-curve. So at this series the backing of the bows is mostly very thin. So the IPE gets not only compression but also tension stress and will break or splinter at the "surface" which is glued on the backing.
    I guess the backing material should simply stand alot of elongation + has about the same resistance to elongation stress as the IPE has to cpmpression + and also has about the same width in the cross-section. So if you want to use some tape for the backing maybe something like "MECRON Elastic Tape", pvc tape or silikon tape which is made out of strong elastomer (not sure how those would be glued since elastomer is not so easy to glue) i guess and then put alot of layers to get to the same width as the IPE.
    I hope this helped - keep up the nice craftsmanship :-)
    all the best,
    Simon

    • @pilz91killerplauze
      @pilz91killerplauze 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think so :-)
      I think he is trying weird stuff that maybe has not been done before, without paying alot attention to technical details. But Kramer knows best why he is chosing what material. Anyways, his creative ideas especially the one with the glass fibre tape thing made me build my own bow! And that is great ;-)

  • @Skandrap
    @Skandrap 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    i think that the flex tape in general is not a good backing. it stretches and that's great, but it doesn't return back to its pre-stretch length. so over time it will just stretches out.

    Sneaky hidden cut at 0:30?
    When he moves across the camera frame he divides the frame with his body vertically, then moves his body across the entire frame right to left. This would be a very easy cut to transition from the shot he took and the final successful trick shot where he hits the ring. There even appears to be some artifacting left of the target that may be left over from this process. This is a technique often used in film. I could be wrong and he legitimately did that shot in one take bit I doubt it.

    I know you've done fiberglass before but what about the fiberglass landscape edging? I tried it on a small bow (first bow attempt after watching one of your videos) out of a 2x4 but my epoxy didn't hold and it delaminated. Probably because I epoxied the side I didn't sand. Haven't had the chance to make a second attempt. I have a feeling it would work pretty well if it's not too thick.

    hello, yes, i was wondering if its possible to take a branch from an "acceptable for bows" tree shaped like a capital Y and make a 3 armed bow? im new here so i thought i would just drop an idea and see if it gets any traction. it would still have a handle because of the singular downward branch ( you would grab it just below where it splits into two branches), but also a naturally centered bowstring beacuse of the y shaped bowstring. it would be like some kind of bow/slingshot hybrid where all three arms flex and shoot arrows. how would you even tiller it?. idk. what do you think?

    Maybe try the flex seal paste in a can. I have to remove this from homeowner roof fixes all the time and it is tough stuff even though it's a terrible roof sealer

    Yeah I'd like to see you try again with flex tape multiple layers and where you clamped it should have probably been replaced

    Could you make a bow with Pistachio shells limbs ? Pistachio shells are extremely hard, my dream is: soaking or boiling the shells to soften them, then press them flat and dry completely. then place them interlaced as good as you can in a limb mold with epoxy, then compress all that to remove as much as you can of excess epoxy, then set that mold in your heat oven.

    Inspired from you bowstring material test, you should try making a bow with paracord as the backing :D

    Kramer, 1st, I love your videos. They are so much fun. But if will it bow wants to be serious (a little more not a lot as the fun would dissappear), then you need to introduce a bit of enginerding. Kinda like Mark Rober but without being so pretentious lol. The two things to consider when looking for good bow materials are elasticity and ultimate tensile strength. In other words, how good is the material at snapping back into its original shape and how far can you bend it before it breaks. If you use these two concepts when selecting materials, then the world's your oyster!

      I'm sure he realizes that, but "will it bow" is also about taking viewer suggestions and seeing what can be done with them, regardless of whether he knows/thinks he knows the outcomes.

    I would like to see you use Flex seal (the spray can one) or Flex seal liquid. A liquid rubber that hardens when dry might work.

    • @joeasher2876
      @joeasher2876 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I bert that's similar to spray on truck bed liners, which from the way they ping small dents back out probably has the tensile strength.
