Alright so here we have Nightmare Before Christmas for the PS2 (it's also on the XBOX). I had high expectations going into this game, not just because it's based on one of the best stopmotion movies of all time and because it was being made by capcom but also because capcom has made quite a few really excellent licence games around that time, before and a few since. The presentation and the optimisation of this game is absolutely top notch. Everything looks and sounds like it's taken straight from the movie except for the framerate which is smooth 60 at all times. The music was actually redone to fit more into the sequences in the game featuring voices of the voicecast from the game to not feel out of place as well as various adjustments to the lyrics (which still doesn't mean it aint copyrighted to hell and back but whatever). And the voice cast for the game sounds incredibly professional considering it's capcom. The writing is also very fitting to the theme and atmosphere of the movie even tho the story's not exactly that strong. Now when it comes to the whole rest of the game... strap up it's a bumpy ride. The genre of choice is fundamentally wrong, I have no idea why anyone at capcom felt the need to make this into a Devil May Cry style game. The movie only had one fight scene which was still mostly dancing. Jack's most recognizable traits are that he's swift and agile and that he can jump... now what genre fits that... maybe a goddamn 3D platformer!? But you know what that would not be so bad on it's own if the gameplay was enjoyable but ... well even the original Xbox has a better DMC style game on it which coincidentally was also based on a movie (It's Van Helsing play that instead). I'm gonna sum up my main gripe points here: -combat is incredibly repettitive as you only have 3-4 attacks and no combos. -the game is excessively grindy forcing you to replay stages dozens of times to afford upgrades. -the weapon upgrade shop is hidden, unless you go left in the witches shop you'll never know it's there and the camera angles in the shop do not give a single hint there is anything more there. -the difficulty is pretty cheap with enemies often sniping you from off screen and throwing projectiles without any audible sound que. -continue system is sadistic as it makes you pay a % of your money to essentially reset the whole stage (very few instances where that's not the case). There is almost no situation where re-loading a save isn't a better solution. -the rhythm minigames are absolute bullshit they use up to 8 different inputs which all come from the same direction, without any distinctive sound cue, not only that the sound mixing makes it nigh impossible to actually hear the tone (I used a cheatcode cause fuck it). -most missions are artificially padded with pointless walking with literally nothing going on and backtracking for health and such which doesn't get replenished upon finishing a mission, which wouldn't be as annoying if not for the fact that there is a strict time bonus on each stage... -the game's simultaniously too bare bones to be enjoyable as a DMC style game and too hard for most non gamer fans of the movie to pick up and enjoy Ok, not that I got that out of my system let's not about the 2 systems this was made for. The game was originally made for the PS2 and then ported to the XBOX. I played both versions and I can say you can't go wrong with any of them. Both versions have pretty much the exact same texture-work and geometry and both run at smooth 60 frames with no dips, there are some minor differences in effects but nothing too spectacular. The Xbox version supports 480p and looks a bit sharper but has some really badly compressed FMV's that try to pretend they're in engine graphics ( a few were re-shot for the xbox version specifically but sadly not most of them). The PS2 version has better looking in engine FMV's (they do look different from in engine graphics here, but I have some of the best processing equipment for this shit) but it uses quite an aggressive motion blur to combat interlacing artifacts (the xbox version also has motion blur but it's toned down allot). BTW this was pretty much a 100% playthrough, I got all the meaningful collectibles like HP, weapon and bottle upgrades and I shown off all the secret chapters and hidden rooms. I didn't bother to collect all the figurines and costumes cause A I ain't S ranking this game and B there is a cheatcode for that.
@@wareforcoin5780 Oh yes they absolutely hold up even today, the use of depth filters and 2D backgrounds is also quite masterful. not to mention even tho the whole thing has a Halloween theme the locations feel really alive with random bugs birds and bats flying around the place some occasional leaves being blown by the wind. It's all so very nicely put together.

Personally, I don't mind the fact it uses a DMC style combat engine (granted, that might be due to the fact that DMC 3 is one of my favorite games of all time), but I hate how poorly used it is. DMC 1 had more combat depth than this game for fuck's sake.
I came to this game to pay respects to the Oogie Boogie man as the voice actor Ken Page passed away unexpectedly yesterday at age 70 R.I.P Mr. Oogie Boogie.
I remember playing this when I was a bit younger. It wasn't scary, but it was hard as hell. I only ever got past the fight with the Doctor on one save file, and that got corrupted. It wasn't the best game I played at the time, and definitely not the best game I've ever played, but it holds a place in my childhood. I'm still mad at myself for getting rid of it.
People crying cause it was a devil may cry look alike cause of the combat and grading system but in all this game deserves a come back, if not remastered at the very least

I still play it! 😁 My least favorite chapter was Chapter 8. Where you have to change out the Dr. Finkelstein's brain. Can't stand that one lol
Jesus Zero barking every three seconds was driving me nuts. Then I just made a drinking game. Took a drink everytime jack says "Soul Robber"... incidentally I'm now dealing with cirrhosis
It's not the best DMC game out there, in fact it's one of the worse ones I've played from that generation that had a budget but it has allot of charm. If you're gonna play it I'd recommend using a cheatcode for the musical segments (has to be inserted during the bossfight), making sure you find the upgrade shop in the right side of witches shop and grind for money by re-trying the first stage over and over (later stages may give you more in terms of money from monsters but none can be completed as quickly as the first stage and getting a good rank at any stage nets you 500 or 1000 moneys which is ALLOT)

I remember playing this game so much as a kid I have beaten it so many times but never got bored of it but sadly my PS2 died and it was time to upgrade to a PS3 but god this was one of my favorites growing up I wish I can play it again or hell I wish it could get a remake and be available on PS4/Xbox1/PC that would be so cool plus they could fix some of the problems that it had back then with the camera and maybe add more attack moves with more combos but sadly I don't think that will happen also hear Disney is making a live version of the movie but I would rather them make this game a movie then a remake live version anyway great video I loved watching this and going down memory lane
I think its too late to comment but my parents gave me a ps2 for my 5th birthday and I vaguely remeber playing this game so i looked it up because i still have the game to this day but no ps2 to play with it.
Okay this is by no means a perfect game, but it's not the worst. I can appreciate the devs actually put effort into this game and the music score. What's more, I feel it added depth to the side characters who never got much screen time in the movie.
I played this game way back in the day. NOw at 51 I still like the game. I wasn't ever good at the music part. My son would do those parts. I liked a lot of this esp. the graveyard and the Christmas parts. I didn't mind doing any of this over and over. My only complain is you don't run , you twirl and flip. At the first I thought you were practicing. Then you did it all the time so I had to stop watching those parts. Having said that I loved the game anyway and I finished this before cheats so I think that was great.
Sorry for that, the dodging makes you go significantly faster and besides i always found it fun to do, especially the last part of each dodge sequence.

English isn't my first language, so I never knew what was going on as a child, I just kept randomly figuring out how to progress through the levels. Never did beat the game, but I have really fond memories of it because of how much time I played it
i wanna get this game so bad, for my ps2 slim , but if a remastered version came out for ps4 or even ps5, i would rather get that1 instead. I made it look less bad than it is cause I practiced. Also I cut out about 50 replays of the first stage when grinding for money and (almost) all fails on stuff like "platforming" and such. It's one of my less favorite DMC clones but at the same time it's one of my favorites to look at and listen to.
Is it weird to say that this game is a better sequel than the movies like The Fox And The Hound 2 or The Jungle Book 2? Granted, The Lion King 2 and The Rescuers Down Under are good sequel movies.

The last video I’ve seen of this game on TH-cam is 14 years old (TH-cam is 15 years old by the way).
This game came out in 2004-2005, so it was more than likely one of the first things that was gonna get uploaded to TH-cam.

I made it look less bad than it is cause I practiced. Also I cut out about 50 replays of the first stage when grinding for money and (almost) all fails on stuff like "platforming" and such. It's one of my less favorite DMC clones but at the same time it's one of my favorites to look at and listen to.
