Hey everyone! Thanks a lot for your enthusiasm and kind words! Unfortunately I don't have enough time right now to reply to all of your questions. Hopefully at some point. In any case you can expect a ton more videos from me in the near future! The awesome website Global Domination has a brand new interview where I talk about the Dirk Blast and lots of drum-related stuff: Link is in the video description. Cheers to you all and keep blasting!
This is so metal: a guy ripping a brutal variation of a blast beat, yet clearly the nicest and most soft spoken gentleman you’ll meet all day. Awesome video, dude!
I hope to god Dave writes a song worthy of this beat and he lets Dirk go wild recording the next album. This would sound insane played under a signature Mustaine weird and complex rhythm!
@@JayDillaThaKillaNot quite. Spencer uses a switch blast, which is basically a regular blast beat where he switches his hands every measure. This is a different technique entirely.

All in all, it's not too unreasonable of me to say that they are different techniques.
Thank you so much for the clarity in your explanations Dirk. I am actually a bassist and following technical aspects of how a drummer approaches and picks apart things like this helps me immensely in the deconstruction (no joke intended, sorry) of my right hand fingerstyle.
Because he is playing triplets, and if you don't switch hands you can't play by alternating hands - your right hand has to go to the hihat right after hitting the snare. Try it out and you will see what I mean.
Because you can go faster that way. In a continous roll with one hand you´ll reach your limits rather fast but you can play insane fast three strokes/ four strokes.

I set my kit up with the hi-hats at 12 o' clock using a remote hi-hat pedal, and it really helps to do this beat as well as any other beat requiring the hands have equal access to the hats. A symmetrical setup in general really helps for anything that requires the hands be equidistant to all aspects of the kit. I recommend it to anyone looking for a new configuration for their kit.
Unfortunately, the above sentence is a past tense one (should have set "I had set my kit up" to be more proper). I no longer have my set, I had to get rid of it due to a living situation outside of my control. If you want to see what I mean, though, look up how Bill Bruford sets up his kit. Mine was a lot like that for hi-hat, snare, and tom placement. Danny Carey of Tool also has a 12 o' clock hi hat placement, though his are above his rack toms, and I found that to be too much of a stretch. I didn't even use rack toms by the end of it, just floor toms.
+Ken Klejs I'd Google it. I am going to end up seeing mine up like that, as it is seeming more and more to be the only set up I haven't tried, including going leftie and back. I am most capable of performing the techniques I know when I am not cross sticked for grove, as in your typical right across to hi hat, left under. I want my right exactly like my left. I just haven't bought the remote hat yet...
I don't play drum kit anymore, but that looks so efficient. Regular typical blast beats are so hard to get the right technique for. Once I got into Selkirk a shortly after sold my drums because the two inteuments I really wanted to get good at were Keys and Guitar... 😂 Anyways, nice techniques.
@DirkVerbeurenDrummer you did something similar on Sybreed's Dynamic and you switched up on the cymbals like crazy. I've never seen someone able to do that with a regular blast beat. I've been working on the "Dirk Blast" myself. I'm nowhere near as fast as you yet but I've got the general idea down. thanks for sharing this awesome secret with us dude. and I can't wait to hear what you cooked up with Meshuggah guitarist Fredrik. :D
@allmetaliswelcome I don't think so. The flam accent switches hands which allows time to move to the hi-hat, whereas the swiss triplet doesn't... I haven't tried but it seems nearly impossible to move comfortably from snare to hi-hat (or vice-versa) within two triplets at high speeds.
3 minutes 26 to watch, 2 years to do it perfectly.
At least!
I know that feeling...
You got it down yet?
My brain melted for about 19 months
You don’t come across a drummer that invented his own blast beat every day 😊
the other one I know is Gene Hoglan
So this guy woke up someday and thought "nah these blast beats that already exists it's not good enough, maybe I do one better"

I've drummed Death Metal for years and this is so sick!
Sounds very militant.
Always appreciate creativity and new methods
amazing, a drummer that actually teaches and does so very well

One correction- this is a flam accent, not a flam tap. But sick beat Dirk!!
Not only was that a great way to break things down and explain what’s going, but the final result is epic!
sounds like a train driving off
Who knew this legend is gonna be in a legendary band with other legendary members?
Dirk you are a genius using that rudiment that way!! I think I will apply that to my band's songs. Thanks a bunch!!
Your blast beats are second to none!
Your sensational drummer you explain it so well love to see you play longer
Yeah you're right Luke, None is the best drummer out there. Dirk's great though

@DirkVerbeurenDrummer very cool. that is one hard part to figure out, this makes it so clear, thanks for sharing!
WOW!! This has got to be the coolest blast beat video I have ever seen. Never seen a blast done in such a way. Very inventive. HORNS!
The Dirk Blast was used in Sybreed's Dynamic
One of my fav drummers.
When Jimmy pino did this in Cowards Deathbed, I was mesmerised, now I know where it came from ❤️
favorite drummer ever.
Holy fucking shit, I was searching his videos to know about him and I didn't even knew about his "Dirk Blast". Damn it sounds fantastic.
I've been trying to get the flam accent blast down for years, you make it look so easy! The movement to the hi-hats is definitely the tricky part.

Thank you so much for the clarity in your explanations Dirk. I am actually a bassist and following technical aspects of how a drummer approaches and picks apart things like this helps me immensely in the deconstruction (no joke intended, sorry) of my right hand fingerstyle.
And I thought I made this technique up myself... Well, cool to see that people can come up with such similar ideas!
Honest question: Why is the hand switch necessary, though? Couldn´t I just play a triplet blast and hit the Hi-Hat only with my right hand?
Because he is playing triplets, and if you don't switch hands you can't play by alternating hands - your right hand has to go to the hihat right after hitting the snare. Try it out and you will see what I mean.

It's a variation of this. On Deconstruction, I play 16th note triplets on the kicks, instead of following the snare.
