      My Perry Class Frigate had a new diesel engine (about the size of house kitchen) installed to a generator. Upon testing one of the pistons decided it was leaving the crankcase. The piston was about 9 inches in diameter. Big fire, took about 3 hours to put it out and clean it up. So much for a *NEW* engine.

    5:55 that’s actually grounds for a family member to sue. When taking the job of a doctor nurse medic etc you have what’s known as a duty to act where you don’t let jurisdiction rules etc dictate if you render aid or not. Saw a similar case (I’m Florida where I’m an EMT.) where a guy coded (went in to cardiac arrest) in the parking lot of a hospital. The hospital staff was not able to retrieve and work the man because he wasn’t in the facility. Fire rescue had to be called to the scene and bring the man in. The patient died. I can’t confirm or deny it was due to delayed care but during code situations every second is crucial.

      The only situations where location comes into play should be if saving them would put others in the area of danger.
      But these people are on a ramp between a cruise ship and land.
      They should be allowed to try and save them.
      Also the comment about the hospital. They should of tried to save the guy. They get called out to random places to save people, why should the parking lot in front of the hospital be any different.

    I have a few stories of my own. Im an Officer who previously worked on a cruise ferry as a deckhand (might be joining the cruise indistry as an officer sometime in the future).
    First story. We were going to have a fire drill, and had announced this information to passengers. During the drill, the silent alarms on our pagers went off (usual stuff, happens every 2 days or so, 99% of the time its a false alarm, thats why its silent).
    Well it turned out that coincidentally this time there was a small cabin fire. We didnt raise the general alarm as it wasnt deemed neccessary. Passengers just assumed that the firemen in full smokediving gear (including me) were only part of the drill, not an actual fire.
    Second story: this ship had 4 main engines. One of them blew up with such force that a explosion relief valve came flying off with such force it put a dent in the bulkhead. We kept sailing on 3 engines and noone knew a thing.
    Bonus story:
    One of our two rudders had a small malfunction, which required us to come to a stop for 10 minutes so the engineers could fix it. We informed the passengers of this and all went well. 10 minutes later the engineers were finished and we started to continue our voyage, when the local Rescue Coordinarion Centre contacted us and asked what our emergency was. Apparently one of the passengers had made a distress call on the ships behalf.
    Luckily they contacted us first, because else said passenger could have been in a lot of legal toruble.
    A false distress call in the US for example is a felony with up to 6 years in prison along with a $250,000 fine.

      @MoA-Reload... 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Lol had a similar thing on fast craft ferry I worked on. There was an issue with one of the buckets that got jammed hard strbd. We came to a stop so the engineers could center it and cut the hydros so we could get going again an engine down and fix it later. Just as they were finishing the bridge got a radio call from HM Coastguard. They'd received a 999 call from one of our pax saying we were on fire and didn't know what we were doing 😂 Police were waiting to have a nice chat with them when we got in. Still no idea how they thought we were on fire. I was on that same ship when we really did have an engine room fire and it's not exactly a subtle event 😂

    • @SportSoulLife
      @SportSoulLife 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      MoA-Reload... There sure are a lot of funny incidents with passengers. All "normal" work stories are amplified on ships since passengers ofcause have no idea how a ship works and what requirements it has. I mean most people dont have a clue how long it takes for a ship to turn so its understandable.
      My favourite story was when we were cleaning the sundeck (this ship had a large, forward to aft sundeck with the casing seperating it in the middle) and had closed off the port side in order to keep passengers from getting water sprayed on them and slipping on the soap.
      When we were almost done, an older lady stood at the barrier and complained "do you think this is a prison? Because as far as im aware this is a ship".
      I laughed until i realized she was dead serious. Luckily deckhands on that company dont wear nametags nor are they required to keep good customer service. She was fuming at the fact that she couldnt walk out on the soapy painted metal deck, where my coworker was currently rinsing it with a pressure washer.
      The usual stuff is when passengers think its a good idea to skip a barrier, manually force a sliding door open and go for a smoke in an area where a 20L cannister with a corrosive sticker on it is fully visible (glass sliding door), along with an unknown liquid (phosphoric- and oxalic-acid in high concentration, a drop leaves you blind if not immediately treated) dripping from the ceiling, and a deckhand with full protective gear is currently applying the unknown liquid. Like what the hell are people thinking. Also, there is another smoking area on the opposite side of the ship, fully visible from the closed off area. Luckily no passengers ever got it on them. I know from a coworkers experience, getting that stuff in your eyes HURTS.

      @MoA-Reload... 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@SportSoulLife I always say we see people at their dumbest and weirdest when they travel. Had a family think it was a smart idea to scatter Grandpa's ashes at sea off the back of SeaCat at full pelt. Ship at 35knts creates a hell of a breeze so Grandpa got well scattered. He coated the family, good portion of the port aft quarter and we had to hose bits of him off the vehicle ramp before we could unload when we got in. Not to mention when the cabin crew got the family out of the way whatever they traipsed into the cabin ended up in a Henry hoover.
      Even when shit gets real ppl are mental. The engine room fire I experienced was port side engine room when a fuel pump spewed fuel all over the engine. Co2 fixed fire suppression system failed AND vents and shutters failed to close. We were boundary fighting that fire for 2hrs bobbing around just outside Belfast Lough before it finally ran out of fuel and went out. Pax and crew all with life jackets on literally 5mins from Cpt calling it(although they didn't know that) and the thing that annoyed the pax most after "smoke hurts" is we'd closed the bar! That and we'd closed the aft decks so they couldn't get out for a smoke...while the ship was on fire and belching black smoke out the back. Passenger logic right there.
      Fun fact, no one knew the Co2 had failed to go off until they went to replace the tanks and found they were still full...oops. Company payed for them to be replaced anyway rather than add it to the list of stuff they had to explain to MCA investigators. I have no idea how they got away with that and that ship was back up and running the next season after a winter in dry dock on a different route. Bitch of a thing had a couple of more tries at killing me before my time was done. It has the name HSC Jaume II now so good luck to anyone traveling on that thing. Bloody things a jynx :p
      Marine traffic site shows her in the Caribbean Sea. Bit of a change from the Irish Sea for sure.lmao

    • @SportSoulLife
      @SportSoulLife 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      MoA-Reload... Yeah, and dont get me started on peoples driving as soon as they hit the ramp... I would let a 10 year old drive a car in, it cant get any worse than the others. The regulars however are quite good, and surprisingly, guys in their early 20s with cheap beat up cars as old as themselves. They just follow directions and trust the people who have loaded 100,000s of cars on that ship, to know what they are doing. Also they like to press the gas pedal, which is a gift sent from heaven (45 minute time to unload, load and cast off).
      The ship i talked about was bought from a ceirtain South European company (not wanting to go down that path to mention their name). When it was bought, the smokediving equipment was indeed in mint shape. However, there was one problem. The equipment was never even unboxed. It was all just thrown into the fire stations when they go it and they never even bothered to unpack the equipment during years of service at sea.
      When the captain looked at the life boat certificates, it said "passed inspection by sample". The inspectors never even came onboard to test the equipment, they just had samples of who knows what sent to them. "OS, go cut a piece of brand new wire and send it to the inspectors office will you? Lets say thats what we have on our lifeboats" (they were in poor condition).
      We often have problems with a ship from the same company when navigating.
      One of the captains actually has a standing order to call him to the bridge whenever that vessel is seen on radar. Its that bad. Complete disregards to all safety. They will cross our bow with 0.4 CPA if they gain something from it, the closest the got to us was 0.25 nm by our side when we were head on. If we try to make more space, they cut it and put it back to dangerously close. Relative speed between us two is around 40 knots head on. With 0.25 nm. At open sea.
      I shit you not when i tell you that it took the deckhands there 5 minutes to get a heaving line ashore, from the aft, alongside berth.
      Ive seen worse than that ofcause, especially chinese ships, but still, a passenger ferry at that level is scary. Never setting my foot on one of their vessels, ever. Once a friend of mine got tickets to that ship. Before he could even finnish i told him to sell them if he has a will to live.

    • @SportSoulLife
      @SportSoulLife 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      MoA-Reload... when they bought the ship the bridge was filled with pictures of jesus, crosses and what not. We would joke that whenever something was wrong, instead of fixing it, they just hung up another painting of jesus. Pure hope and faith did keep her afloat for i think half a decade or so so i guess thats actually a good strategy then.

    I worked on a cruise ship when one of the waiters died. We were told to tell the passengers that he had simply been sent home in order to avoid ruining their holiday with the bad news. Dude was only 28.
    Also, in the gift shops we used to run a contest where passengers could leave receipts from their purchases in a box and 5 people would have a chance of having it drawn at the end of the cruise and getting their money back. Thing was, our manager secretly removed all the receipts over $10 before doing the draw. It was just an incentive to get people to make expensive purchases in the naive hope they would get their purchase for free.
    Oh, and 3:30 is totally true. Don't feel bad for the crew members on the cruise. A lot of people seem to think that we never get to set a foot on shore except in home port. In reality, home port is our busiest day, and there are actually beaches and bars on the islands and other spots exclusive for crewmembers of the cruise ships. We get free shots there. Our boss doesn't mind us being a little bit buzzed on duty because it makes us more sociable and better salespeople. Also, you know those $800 shore excursions? We get to do them for free, and we get to go up to those big buffet tables after closing and pig out with whatever is left over on the tables.
    11:23 is also true, but exaggerated, since we are of course capable of phoning our family to get the latest news, and we all know the free wifi spots in each port if we're desperate for a little internet time.

Shortly after my interview I received a confirmation that I had gotten the job and they gave me less than a month to obtain an international work visa. Dude, I'm super glad you had so much fun working aboard, but it isn't like that for everyone, or even the majority. I only went to a free excursion once in two years, and anyway you have to work later. It's not like you go to the beach and then sleep because you're tired. So many times the choice is between resting and going out, because you're likely bound to work 6 or more hours more afterwards. For one day of 'going to the beach/monuments etc.' there are like 15 days of never getting off. During embarkation day I used to work 12+ hours in a single day, and may Heaven help you if you're undermanning. You're also supposed to go the drills whenever there is one, even if you are on break.

    I worked for a dinner cruise company for a year. one trip on our way to pick up passengers in a large east coast city we got a high water alarm. This wasn't too unusual due to the slightly rough conditions that evening. I got sent below deck to check it out. Low and behold there was about 18" inches of DIESEL FUEL in the bilge. So one-day my older cousin's go to a little q&a with one of the ships captians and when it was over, my cousin went up the him and asked if anyone has died or fell behind on a cruise the captain has been on and it was revealed that the week before, one of the ships workers had jumped off the boat (we were on) in the middle of the night.
    The reason why wasn't known and the body hasn't been found, they were still searching while we were on the boat.

      I dont know. The hardware is expensive and from all the issues the recent macs have, I'd say it's not that great. I guess theres always running it on a VM, but that's just another thing to add complexity. IMO linux is just the most flexible, as it can be installed to pretty much anything, you pick what software and programs you need, with minimal bloat, and it has the community to support it.

      Or, you know, have IT that knows what it is doing. There's no way any competent IT staff is allowing the computers to update whenever the hell they want or all at the same time. They might be using Windows for very specific reasons that cannot be addressed by another OS but letting the OS dictate maintenance and updates to you is beyond incompetent.

    • @HobkinBoi
      @HobkinBoi 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@animalcookie I get that. But from experience, Windows is pretty fussy that it gets updated. Microsoft doesnt make it too easy to disable automatic restarts in some cases. This is more evident on Windows 10, as you've probably heard about. Not saying its impossible, and yeah, IT should know this, but still.
      Also something I've noticed with Linux, is it usually can update stuff on the fly while the system is running. Sometimes it does need to be rebooted, it'll usually say when you log in an SSH session "SYSTEM RESTART REQUIRED", where you can reboot as it says, or you could leave it as is until a suitable opportunity arises.
      Also personally, I find Linux to be more reliable for running for longer periods of time. You know where sometimes something goes wonky with Windows, where you usually just need to reboot it to correct it? I havent experienced this with Linux yet. Probably depends on what's running on it though.
      One final thing, you can run windows applications in Linux, it does take some setting up but it can be done. Or the program could be rebuilt and rewritten for it.

      Cruises are awesome. My first one was nothing special, made the normal procedure (breakfast, go to the coast and enjoy where we are placed, lunch generally outside, then in the evening go back to the ship, go to the restaurant to eat dinner and then go to the casino/bars/parties/theater).
      The second I befriend one of the musicians that worked in the bar next to the pool and I asked about what they did in their free time. He said they sleep about 3 to 4 hours per day but every day after the passengers go to sleep they party on the bar in deck 13th. He invited me and I went their 3 nights. There were few veteran passengers that love cruises and crew members. I got to know the captain and the vice captain in different nights, the bartenders made different drinks. I drank a wine that only the high crew members drink and was one of the most entertaining people in the place. It was a blast.

    I've been on a LOT of cruises, and from the top of my head I remember at least 2 of them when someone died. One of them a lady had a some sort of terrible accident and had to be air lifted out. And another time while the missus and I were having dinner at the restaurant an elderly lady had a heart attack right in front of us. She lived, thankfully, and we ended up having a chat to her the next day.
    Edit: One of the cruises we were on, the ship was the P&O Pacific Explorer, the seas were super choppy and we were travelling perpendicular to the surf. The ship was hit by a wave that smashed two windows and drenched a bunch of people in the restaurant, children as well. The missus and I were at the bar when it happened and the whole side of the ship shook and stuttered. A lot of the ship was flooded that night and the captain had to turn the engines off and let the current take us back south. The current was so strong that we traveled twice the distance we did through throughout the day by just drifting south over night. It was pretty eventful to say the least.

    My Nana told me a story about a cruise she was on. A man had passed away and his family, who were also on the ship, decided he should be buried at sea. The crew hadn’t done this procedure in a while so they had a practice before the funeral. They loaded him on the chute and practiced sending his body off, but they weren’t meant trip the switch to actually let him go. Something went wrong, however, and body slipped down and into the sea. The family later cried over sacks of potatoes in a body bag as it was let down the chute.

Not knowing what it was doing I grabbed the deck phone and contacted the ship to let them know there was a warship off the starboard aft. I was told that it was a cargo ship to which I replied "Cargoships do not normally have a bloody big gun on the foredeck and come armed with missiles!". The Captain then got on the radio and asked what the heck it was doing to which the US navy warship (who else!) said it was using us to train its crew. Skipper said that if it did not leave in the next thirty seconds, he would assume it was a pirate and take appropriate steps
    Ship backed off and none of our passengers even knew about it

This particular boat had this kind of area that had a cut out on the floor, and some rope there (This was long ago, and I only worked at the very top of the 2 floor boat. So I don't know how they did that.)Think of those rope jungle gym climbing things that you use to go to the slide part. That, but on the floor. The rope was neated up and colored white with cushions, so it was very popular. The max of people that could be here was 3. A fourth person came in. The rope was a little stretched... a fifth person came in. They were, um.. Big Smoke basically. And... RIP. It ripped. Everyone was fine. And since you had to book the VIP section, there were little people that wanted to pay the extra million Bolivarés just for especial drinks, the rope lounge, and a sun chair. Anyway, everyone admitted it was their fault and were embarassed a little, especially this girl that told the two other people, including Big Smoke, that they could lay with them. Nobody was allowed to sit there for the rest of the trip. If you see any spelling errors, tell me!

We ended up leaving port about an hour or two later than expected because searches were going on everywhere. He must have been gone at least for a day before passengers found out. After we left port, a police boat came to the side of the ship and stayed for a few minutes before leaving again. Then an ambulance was back at the Florida port after our cruise ended. I hope they found him and he didn't drown at sea...

    I went on a Mediterranean cruise a few years back. I celebrated my birthday in Venice by taking an island tour excursion that afternoon, then going to St. Mark's at night for some gelato. I was exhausted by the time back on board the ship that night, with just enough time to sit down for a very late dinner. This was long after the scheduled dinners had ended, so I could sit anywhere I wanted instead of my usual assigned table. Even before I ordered anything, the waitress was already checking me out, especially my hair. Then she found out it was my birthday. She took every opportunity she could to brush up against me, lightly touched my arm, and ran a hand through my hair a couple of times. There was no mistaking that for some accidental touching or being friendly to the customer. I know that European women are more direct when it comes to flirting and romance, but I was not expecting that. I didn't plan on having a fling on a cruise, so I didn't pack any condoms. I love women and appreciate the gestures and obvious signals, but it *really* wasn't the time! I never saw her again, what a shame.

    Not sure if this counts but...
    I took a cruise to the bahamas a few years ago and found out that our luggage was never actually put onto the boat. Somehow my dad's stuff made it on though. We kept asking about it and at first they tried to play it off like they didn't know what we were talking about, then they said that it was still in a terminal back in Miami (we had to fly to Miami to board the ship) or something like that. Then they kept telling us that it was going to be shipped to the ship then finally they admitted that they didn't know where it was. It took us two days to get to the Bahamas and the ship didn't have any toothpaste or toiletries. It was awful. When we got there, they told my mom and I that we could purchase I believe up to $500 dollars worth of stuff as long as we showed them the receipts. (It could only be stuff that we truly needed like clothes, underwear, sleepwear, swimsuits, etc.) Trust and believe, the first things I bought was a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, soap and lotion and I rushed right back onto the ship to shower and brush my teeth. (we were taking showers but we had to split a tiny hotel bottle of body wash which didn't last us very long) On the morning of the very last day, they slid a letter under our door letting us know that our luggage would be arriving soon. We got it about an hour later.
    There was another instance where everyone started getting sea sick on the last day because we were going through a storm. You couldn't really hear much from inside of the ship so people were looking around wondering what was happening. Thankfully the choppy waters didn't make me sick but the swaying motion made my dad and I drop dead tired. I had to keep forcing myself to get up and move around because if I did so much as sit for more than 10 minutes, I'd fall asleep. What sucked even more was that everything on the cruise was for people 21 and older and I was only 18 at the time so there really wasn't much that I could do.

    Edit:Here's one. In 2013 while we were in Mexico, Cozumel, 5 of us went to the local topless bar, on the way back,the only sober guy among us had no driver's licence on him, the rented jeep had issues with the steering system, it started raining, we crashed, but were fine.Cops came, the guy that was driving got arrested and put in the holding cell with 30ish or so people that just got arrested during the armed robbery of local Diamonds international.The police was entering the holding cell from time to time to shout at them and beat them. The hotel director and the staff captain came to negotiate his release. Few hours and 7000$ later he got released. TON of paparazzi were in front of the station trying to get pics and statements regarding the robbery. His confused ass ended up in the newspapers with the robbery story.

    ~1985 i was stationed (USN / USMC Corpsman, and was a ABH before HM) reserves in Seattle area going to college and applied to couple cruise ships for summer work. Was told "Too Qualified". Why would they NOT be interested in a USN Sailor who had been on 2 USN ships and 2 West PACs level of experience? Probably because USN Sailor even Enlisted would see them cutting corners r/t Safety at Sea?

      @@mehoyminoy1326 Too qualified can mean any number of things. It can mean you're too old, or they don't think you'll fit into the team, or even that you really are too qualified and you'd start asking questions about the way things are done instead of following orders blindly (you're right, they don't exactly have old-fashioned military discipline on board these cruise liners when it comes to safety). That might be why he was rejected.

      @@mehoyminoy1326 first Vulpes is correct. Navy personnel are highly trained on ships. Navy vs cruise ships are very different in experience at sea. Navy personnel are trained many basics of seamanship, cruise ships are not. Over the years I have learned Most Navy won't go on cruise ship, not because they are tired of going to Sea, we love that, but just look at the last few years news on cruise ship disasters. Yes USN has had their share also, the difference is how it was handled.
      At that time I had driven a Carrier, and a Supply Ship, paint, sweep and swab, basics of both boilers and Nuclear propulsion, fight fires and bulkhead damage, man overboard situations, anchors, lines for at port and at sea and list goes on. Navy know most shortcuts that can cause harm and or place the ship and people into danger. As Vulpes stated we don't work blindly.
      Too qualified is a oxymoron for hiring people, but it is done often ask a family elder, you will get many stories on employment experiences.
      I started college in my late twenties. The college had a policy that all single freshmen had to live in the Dorms. I was older than the Dorm Mother. She had a problem with that if she ever had to discipline me. (I had been in the USN USMC for about 8 years by then). They moved me to college apartments. In a way i was too qualified to live in the Dorms.

    I don't see anything wrong about dying on a cruise ship that I choose as my retirement home. To look out one last time over the Caribbean waters on my deck cabin with my wife/family by my side doesnt bad at all. Id prefer it. Id leave a big tip for the hazmat team, security and cabin boy/girl, with a small apology/thank you letter. Would just hope I managed to smuggle some type of form of THC onboard so I can go out high af.

    When I went on a cruise with my parents and extended family, my uncle got really drunk one night in his and his wife’s cabin. They started having an argument and because my uncle was drunk he was screaming that he was going to jump overboard and take his wife with him (they were staying in a balcony unit). Security was called and about 15 crew members & security came to their room. They spent 2 hours questioning my uncle and his wife, decided that my uncle was bluffing and cut off his alcoholic drinks package. For the rest of the cruise, almost everyone knew my uncle by name and knew what he had threatened.

    How about cargo ships, etc. tho? My dad worked there before and he said there would be people who would climb and hide inside their ship. Once they found out, they would throw the guy onto the water and gave him a life vest and food as they are not allowed to smuggle people from one place to another. They felt bad for the guy but they have no choice and was already far from the land. Did anyone here have the same experience?

    4:29 oh yeah I remember that. I was 10/11 at the time so I wasn't really interested and don't remember details, but the sinking of the Concordia brought one hell of a shitstorm to Italy. The Captain (I think Schettino was his name) got into A LOT of legal trouble. There was a parody song shittalking him going around, and I remember my entire school (we're still talking elementary) singing it for MONTHS during break and stuff. I don't think a single person living in Italy at that time that was old enough to remember didn't hear about it. It really was a big deal

    There's an entitled parent store floating around where she brought her kid sick with the norovirus and she said because she spend so much money her sick kid should partake in everything the cruise had to offer. The pools, the buffet, etc etc. As you would expect, she caused a huge outbreak and the ship was blocked from entering ports. The poster's family recovered towards the end of the trip and were able to walk around the nearly deserted ship.
