hi . I know this is a long shot. but my great grandmother was a pianist ( we still have her piano ) and I grew up listening to tales from my grandfather about how she sang with Carl Hardebeck...have you any information at all about her? her name was Pauline Kirk. I know this is completely random..but any information would be greatly appreciated :)

Hi ? Very interesting. I know that Hardebeck conducted choirs in Belfast, Cork and Dublin. Your grandmother could have been a choir member? Where was she from? Was Kirk her maiden or married name? I can't say I've come across this name but let me know as much as possible about Pauline and I'll see if I can find any information. Can't promise anything though!
      E.

Eugene Dunphy Thank you :) Her maiden name was Kirk . She was born in Belfast on Hallidays Road of Dock Ward which I understand doesn't exist anymore. She subsequently moved to Cavan and died very young. The only stories that we have of her is that she used to sing with Carl Hardebeck and loved the piano and there was some link with Pearse. We have never found anything about Carl Hardebeck until I found this video last night. any info at all would be greatly appreciated . thank you for taking the time to reply :)

    Hi Eugene,
I'm interested in the background of Sean Neeson. I'm fairly familiar with his public life. Do you know much of his family background?
    Martin

Hi Martin. Seán Neeson (1891-1964) was born at
170 Albert Street, Falls Rd, Belfast. As a boy he lived at 153 Mulholland Terrace, Falls Rd.
He received his early education at the following 3 places: St Paul's, Hardinge Street, and St. Mary's. He was a member of Saint Paul’s choir on the Falls Road where his uncle, James McAllister, presided as organist.
When Seán’s father, Owen, a patternmaker at the Harland & Wolff shipyard invented a gold-sifting device in 1898, he travelled to the South African goldfields to seek his fortune but died shortly after in a mining accident in Johannesburg. As a result, his mother, Isabel McAllister, and her sister reared Seán.
Seán matriculated at Queen's in September 1908 and graduated in 1913 but I have no information about the intervening years of study so he may have studied externally in a course run by Queen's.
      Hope this is useful.
