Cowardly, he holed up there, not committing his desperately needed troops to relieve those besieged in the GPO. His American Citizenship saved him from execution, as Britain needed American aid in WW1.

He coined a joke: Q:- Why is there no road or street in Ireland named after Dev? A - They couldn't find one long enough, narrow enough or crooked enough!
