    In this historical analysis of “The Foggy Dew,” we'll see that the song is a lot more than Conor McGregor’s walkout song. The history behind this hundred-year-old song is a long and bloody one. To fully understand the Easter Rising and the emotions of the lyrics in “The Foggy Dew,” we first take a very general overview of some of the atrocities that occurred in Ireland under British rule. We then cover the 1916 rebellion for Irish independence, called the Easter Rising, and the song’s sorrowful commentary on the event.
    As always, there’s only so much we can fit in each video, and a lot of interesting information gets left on the cutting room floor. Check out our sources for more info!

    Yes, Conor has also walked out to 50 Cent's "I Get Money," but there's an unfortunate lack of historical scholarship on that song 🤔
    EDIT: At 2:23 the date should be "1169" not "1196." Figured it would be hard for Henry II to launch an invasion after his death in 1189!

    Could you do one on Mick Conlan’s entrance at Madison Square Garden to “Come Out Ye Black and Tans?”

    • @gelliott127
      @gelliott127 4 ปีที่แล้ว +211

      The Black and Tans were a British paramilitary force during the Irish War of Independence. They were sent into Ireland to crush the Irish Republican Army and the fight for Irish freedom using "shock and awe" tactics. Many of them fought in WW1 and saw Ireland as the "wild west" were they were encouraged to do whatever they want. They are the most despised group of British soldiers in the history of Irish/British conflict. The burnt Cork city to the ground, shot numerous innocent civilians (including Eileen Quinn, a 24 year old mother of three who was seven months pregnant at the time). They raped women, tortured prisoners before executing them and got paid for it. They were called the Black and Tans because of their uniforms. They were technically part of the police force: Royal Irish Constabulary, and the British army simultaneously, so the uniforms were black (police) and tan (British army). The song mocks and ridicules them and states no matter how "brave" they were in other wars, the IRA defeated them. "Come out ye Black and Tans, come out and fight me like a man,
      Show your wife how you won medals down in Flanders, Tell her how the IRA made you run like hell away, From the green and lovely lanes of Killashandra." Recently Irish Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Leo Varadkar tried to create a ceremony commemorating the Black and Tans and RUC, in the spirit of "they weren't ALL bad". This has caused such fierce backlash, among other problems in Ireland, that a general election has been called, this resulted in the ceremony being cancelled, and "Come out Ye Black and Tans" by the Wolf Tones became a #1 single in Ireland and the UK!

The full version used to be on TH-cam many years ago but was removed but we do not know why? Was is copyright laws? We learned a lot about the Irish history of our family by watching that movie! That movie tells the story of the separation of the 6 counties in the North of Ireland. Would like to know more about the Penal laws that the British enacted that outlawed the Holy Mass. Uncle Rob

    I'm Polish and grew up in a patriotic family. Before all ye leftist lads and lassies brand me a nationalist, bear in mind to love one's country and countrymen is not nationalism. Nor it is racism of any kind.
    It was really hard to learn the history of my country without all the grief there is. My people were repeatedly slaughtered by Germans and Russians, but as many times we were beaten, we rose up and stood proud again. In Catholic Polish culture there was no place for laws instituted by our oppressors and although our religion is originally peaceful to the point of being radically pacifist, the people were longing for human-made justice out of their hearts. That's why there are so many uprisings in the history of Poland; unfortunately most of them failed due to lack of resources and allies.
    When I learned about the history of Ireland I immediately felt a connection, like if my dead brother was still alive. I started to learn more and became inspired by Irish music, literature and culture. I realised that it compliments Polish culture and it's the other way around as well. I started to translate Irish and Polish patriotic songs (unfortunately English-to-Polish and Polish-to-English, because I couldn't learn an Gaeligh without studying it at the university).
    This is my interpretation of the Foggy Dew; after watching this clip I felt I had to put it out here. Let it be my small contribution to our everlasting friendship, so to speak. Stay safe and free, people of Ireland and Poland.
    Poranna mgła
    Kiedy doliną raz w wielkanocny czas do miłego miasta szedłem w dół,
    Biegły tuż obok mnie uzbrojone tyraliery mężczyzn pośród pól.
    Nie słyszałem dud, ani bębnów huk z dali nie dobiegał mnie,
    Tylko dzwon ponad Liffey, rzeką mą, Anioł Pański bił w porannej mgle.
    Wyżej niż dachów szczyt rozwinięto dziś sztandar wojny w miłym Dublinie;
    Przecież lepiej jest, albo chociaż fest, temu kto w ojczyźnie ginie.
    Zaś od jasnych pól hrabstwa Meath ich sznur ciągnął się jak najsilniejszy wąż,
    Gdy brytyjski Hun śród ognistych łun ciągnął ku nam wraz z poranną mgłą.
    Pognał Anglik precz dzikie gęsi, lecz wolność innym ludom lot ich niósł,
    A od Sulwy [/Suwli] fal aż na Północ w dal, szereg mogił bez ustanku rósł.
    O, czy poległ ten, walcząc pod Pearsem, albo tam gdzie Cathal Brugha,
    Ich imiona są gdzie fenianie śpią, pod opieką mgły wydarte złu.
    Najmężniejszym zgon wieści żalu dzwon, co nad miastem czysto bije,
    Wiosna idzie przez świat i na wiele lat zapamięta ją, kto przeżyje;
    Kiedy niebo znów waliło się w dół na głowy najdzielniejszych jak zły czar,
    Walki podjęli trud, by niewoli chłód razem z mgłą wolności rozdarł żar.
    W górę doliną raz w wielkanocny czas szedłem z sercem pełnym smutku,
    Bo opuścić mi przyszło ludzi tych, dzielnych i których nie ujrzę już.
    Lecz do miasta bram w moich snach wciąż gnam, i za was nadal modlę się,
    By niewolny czas już zostawił nas w tej porannej ukochanej mgle.

    The film Michael Collins from the 1990s got me originally interested in this topic, it's opening sequence is the Easter rising being quelled and the fallout from it. It's good to get the historical background of the Easter rising. Particularly by using the context of this very cool song. one of the best tours I got to take in Ireland revolved around the 1916 Easter rising. Highly recommended.

    Come out ye Black and Tans, come out and fight me like a man

    Tell them how the IRA made you run like hell away
    From the green and lovely lanes of Killashandra
    Come tell us how you slew them poor Arabs two by two
    Like the Zulus they had spears and bows and arrows
    How you bravely you faced one with your 16-pounder gun
    And you frightened them natives to their marrow
    Come out ye Black and Tans, come out and fight me like a man
    Show your wife how you won medals down in Flanders
    Tell them how the IRA made you run like hell away
    From the green and lovely lanes of Killashandra
    Come let us hear you tell how you slandered great Parnell
    When you thought him well and truly persecuted
    Where are the sneers and jeers that you bravely let us hear
    When our heroes of '16 were executed?

    O'Neill wrote this after attending the first session of the new Irish parliament in 1919. He was struck hard hearing so many times the response "locked up by the English" when the names of each elected official was announced. Soon after, he wrote The Foggy Dew to commemorate the Easter Rising and the sentiments that many now felt, that the Irish soldiers should have stayed to fight for Irish independence rather than join Britain in WWI.

    I believe two flags were raised over the GPO in 1916; one was the tricolour and the other was a green flag with a harp and the words 'Irish Republic' in gold/orange and white lettering on it. This (now tattered) 'Irish Republic' flag was captured by the British and was displayed in the Imperial War Museum in London for many years but was returned to Ireland in 1966 (the 50th anniversary of the uprising) and is now on display in the museum in Collins Barracks Dublin.

      @@etherealhawk Yes, the old education system in the Republic taught a virulent Irish nationalism that was very anti-British in its outlook. This has changed now I believe. The Catholic Irish were oppressed by Britain for many years, but then again the working class in Britain, England, Scotland and Wales were also oppressed and mistreated too by the same powers that ran the Empire. I think the new generation in Ireland have a healthier more confident outlook on life without the need to look for oppressors or someone outside to blame.

The people mad about the Texas dispute still think it rightfully belongs to Mexico.. I can't say that the U.S, with all of it's faults, was responsible for what happened in this instance.

      @@Frosty_tha_Snowman The land rightfully belonged to Mexico. When land-hungry American settlers started settling in Mexican-owned Texas, Mexico let them; with the exception that slavery would be prohibited. As more land-hungry Americans started to fill up the land of Texas, President Polk further took this opportunity to take the land away from Mexico knowing the US was a stronger nation, and that Mexico had just gotten done fighting off it’s war of independence against Spain and another war against France. Mexico was able to defend itself against two gargantuan powers. The US knew it was weak in that moment and took advantage.
