  • Kia Optima Issue with A/C working and then not working. I do believe it is FIXED finally, and I did it myself. Swapped out the Compressor Control Valve. This specific one I purchased from Amazon and all the tools I needed from Harbor Freight ( the vac pump and AC manifold ).

    Pro tip for anyone trying this at home: rub some PAG oil (or whatever the Optima's compressor is supposed to take) on the o-rings before install. This ensures that the o rings won't get pinched or roll during install. Also makes install a little easier. You can find the correct compressor oil at any part store.

      I researched and researched, I found several people locally that had the same issues with their 2011/2012 Models and both of them took it to the dealer and they told both of them the compressor had to be changed and it was major $$$$$$! So with that thought, I decided to replace the pressure valve with a newer style that had larger orifice openings within the valve. It's been over a month now and hot as heck and the system is still working perfect. $28 part..... priceless! Good luck!

      I had a friend pull the refrigerant out and I did use a vac pump to pull vac on the system before I added new refrigerant back. I used a digital scale to measure the correct amount when adding it back.

  • @6atlantis
    @6atlantis ปีที่แล้ว

    Those “auto repair guys” on TH-cam that have done a thousand 2013 sonata videos say you have to take the o ring off the new valve and place it in its groove inside the compressor, they even show themselves doing it. Why do you think that is? I know O-rings get stuck behind and you can double up by accident, but your factory one looks like it was actually placed in that groove, which makes me think they were right.

    • @jmaverick
      @jmaverick  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have no idea why they do that, but you should ALWAYS check your parts you remove to ensure the O-Rings came out with it and put it back just like it came out. I work on hydraulic cylinders and much more that use O-Rings and I stand by the way I did it. Just ensure you never put an O-Ring in dry! Lube it up somehow.

      Kyra, I have found out that there is a “recall” for some AC wiring extension, not sure if that is the actual culprit that ends up causing all of that but I would check into it and possibly get Kia to fix it for free. But probably not since most of them just wanna make a quick $$$

    When adding refrigerant do you need to add oil with it for the compressor?

    • @jmaverick
      @jmaverick  ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't because I only changed that valve and thus all the oil should still be in the system.

  • @Dartheomus
    @Dartheomus 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice fix! I may give this a try. I've got a 2011 that the AC works well sometimes when driving, but not always. It almost never works when the car is stopped. It's very intermittent, but when it works, it works well. Question... Do you just vent the coolant? When you recharge the system, do you need to add any oil back to it?

    • @jmaverick
      @jmaverick  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That sounds like the problem we were having exactly, although when ours decided to work it would work somewhat when stopped. As far as venting, for the environments sake, your supposed to capture the Freon that's in it, but most people at home doing this don't have the ability to capture it and just let it go. And just replacing this valve doesn't require you to add oil back to the system, the compressor is retaining all the oil it already had. Good luck! And if you do the repair, please come back and post your results!

  • @macknumber9
    @macknumber9 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I strongly suspect I have a bad solenoid valve too but I have no way of confirming for sure. I want to be 100% sure it is the valve and not the compressor. Normally I wouldn't mind wasting $40 for the part but in this case it will be much more than that because I will have to evac/recharge the whole system twice

  • @ronswanson6252

    I have a 2013 with AC problems. It started with not blowing cold enough, so it was pressure tested, then drained and refilled. But since then occasionally it just doesn't blow cold air at all, only warm, no matter if I drive it or not. Then I shut down the engine, restart and hope it works. So far, it happened only 3 times in 4 weeks... Could it be a pressure switch only? Or is it the same as in your video?

    • @jmaverick
      @jmaverick  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ron Swanson that’s how my issue started, and it sounds as if it’s the same exact problem. I found forums where people reported the same symptoms from years 2011-2014. Most of not all repair shops will want to change out the entire compressor, and I didn’t want to pay multiple hundreds of $$$. Try the fix I did, it’s easy and saves quite a bit of money. The pressure switch is really cheap. Hope this answer helps.

    • @ronswanson6252
      @ronswanson6252 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jmaverick From what I see you replaced the valve control. Have you tried replacing just the pressure switch before? (977213K000) They say I don't even need to drain the system to be able to replace that so it seems an even easier attempt... But again, I'm no expert in fixing, just expert in researching :)

    • @jmaverick
      @jmaverick  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ron Swanson I did not replace the switch, just the valve. I don’t remember where I read it, possibly a Kia Optima forum, but I had read where several people tried the switch and did not have success. What I ultimately found was a video or post ( been too long to remember ) and this person who posted had stated that from their opinion the OEM system was built and tested in a climate that didn’t have the extreme humidity present which changes the nature of the system. They had some tech bulletins and other stuff posted as reference material. Log story short, the replacement valve along with the valves that are preloaded in replacement compressors are of a different design and their orifices are slightly larger. I’m not a technician nor an engineer so I took a gamble after all the frustration with a system that works one min and not the next min. And lastly I was tired of paying people to do work like that so I purchased the tools and learned how to do it myself ( for a few $$$ less than paying someone and now I have the tools for future use ).

    Having a similar problem where it will work on and off going down highway will blow ice cold but going through town stopping and what not will be hot .. but I noticed clutch on compressor isn’t kicking off when the ac is turned off .. it’s spinning constantly

      Carter Juarez . I can’t speak to that issue, I never actually looked at my compressor while the AC was off but the car was running. You may be better off in this situation to seek a professional for help. BUT - as I recently did with an older square body S-10 I have, I found a random person in town one day with a similar truck and just approached them and asked them if I could look under the hood and checked a few things to diagnose my issue. The totally random person was a huge help and never hesitated to help. It’s worth a shot to ask a random person with a similar Optima just to see if their compressor clutch keeps spinning.

    Sorry if this seems repetitive, but with my 2012 It blows extremely cold at highway speeds but in town/ stop and go traffic the air feels hot/ humid. I can be driving on the highway for about an hour, turn the car off for maybe a minute and then once I start her up itll be so hot, like it had been sitting for hours.
    I took it to my Pep boys and they said something about a high hose needing to be replaced? Sorry I forgot the right term but If it was torn wouldn't it just blow hot air all the time? They're asking around $600 , I am nervouse to pay and it be another issue.

    • @jmaverick
      @jmaverick  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jaime U well that’s very similar to the issue I had, not exactly. But I will say that the part where it does work and you shut the car off and get back on and it’s not working, that’s exactly what my problem was along with many other people that have messaged me. I did ask my daughter since it’s her car, she did say that it wouldn’t work in the drive way but at highway speed it was cold and stayed that way until she turned the car off. BIG CLUE - According to many Kia forums that I found, the issue a lot of people had In common when it came to AC issues was that they lived in very hot and humid places. The replacement valve I used was designed for more flow In hot temps, and I’m just saying that based on the orifice sizes on both sides of the valves and the manufacture specs of other valves for hotter and humid climates. Maybe I’m crazy, but it makes sense when you consider what the AC system does with the air to make it cold.
      As far as Pep Boys, I’ve never heard of the high hose being bad and yet the system still works at high speeds. I’m not a certified tech, just a guy that will spend 20hrs reading and learning how to do a 5 min repair just so I know how to do it. The valve don’t cost that much compared to what pep boys wants to charge, maybe it’s worth a shot?!?!? And remember that you can rent the tools you need to vac suck the system down, check pressures and recharge it, just study the method and be careful.

My issue was either it was cooling or not, seldom any in between. I would go and have it checked. Or if your handy with tools and can understand and read dials, you can google / TH-cam information on what the low pressure side should be reading and what the high pressure side should be reading and then go to Autozone or a local parts store and rent a set of AC Manifolds to hook up. It’s pretty straight forward for the most part. You can add Freon with those manifolds also if it just needs a little.

    • @jmaverick
      @jmaverick  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      CSorin well obviously you will have to evacuate the system to take the pressure off, but once you do get the pressure off there is a Snap Ring that is holding it in. You can buy snap ring pliers at any auto parts store, they are relatively cheap. Once you get the snap ring out then you may have to pry on it a little to get it moving because it’s been in there under suction and there are O - Ring seals in place that just need a little nudge to get them moving.
