      That no matter how much I let go of, I can continue to trust that God will provide. The physical item is only temporary, but greater rewards are eternal❤ So yes, trust wins over fear with my faith❤

      Keep something just because it costs money there's a double loss, the money and the item itself because it will ended up damaging. It selfish not to give it away to someone that can give it a real use.

      We moved from a 250sqm home to a 67sqm condo unit. We did a lot of decluttering to fit into a small space, but now I feel that this smaller unit gives us a more relaxed feeling. We are more focused on doing only what's necessary and keeping only what we needed.

    I've been a minimalist for my whole life. (I'm 67 years old.) I love the ease and freedom it gives me. The one lesson I've been practicing lately is not buying gifts for grandchildren! Making cookies with a grandchild is much more meaningful than buying them a toy.

    The biggest lesson I got from minimalism was decluttering gently and not by impulse. Someone asked you about objects with sentimental value. When I started decluttering and wanting to be a minimalist, I got rid of some stuffed animals that my late mother gave me when I was a child and there are at least three that I deeply regret having got rid of, not specially because of my mother (that too), but because stuffed animals are nowadays the only decorative objects I keep, because they truly bring me joy and those particular animals brought me joy, they reminded me of my lovely childhood. After that I started doing things gently. I think that rushing things may be more harmful than good. I started keeping things in a bag (away from my eyesight) for some days and if I don’t miss them, that’s because they need to go and donate them. I never regretted having given anything away again. Thanks for the lovely video 💙❤️💛💚🖤💗🧡💜♥️

    • @SimpleHappyZen
      @SimpleHappyZen  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi Alexandra, thanks for sharing your experiences! I think being gentle and taking your time is an excellent strategy. And keeping them in a bag out of sight for a while to see if you miss them can be a really handy step in making sure you won't regret giving them up (also to challenge ourselves to really try and be without certain items for a while).

    Congratulations on 10 Years! The biggest lesson I've learned from decluttering is the total cost of an item. The time, energy, and money used to purchase something, the space the item consumes in your home, was the cost per wear/use substantial to you, and then what happens to the item when you dispose or donate it. Donation places are often inundated with stuff, I believe they have to toss out a lot too. One tip I wanted to mention about accumulating beauty items, there are some places that specifically recycle the containers, such as Credo Beauty.

    For those of you struggling with your everyday wardrobe, this may be useful.
    I am semi-retired, so have a casual wardobe, but this also works if you also need smart work wear.
    (I have a separate wardrobe for social/special occassion clothes).
    I have tried ideas such as capsule and 10 item wardrobes but it didn't work for me. As you say, there is always a piece missing.
    Instead, each season, I have 7 everyday outfits - a weeks worth of clothes. This works better for me, as I have enough clothes.
    This consists of 7 tops, a mix of styles, 4 navy bottoms and 2 neutral cardis.
    I decided to stick to one colour for all my bottoms as it makes life so much easier.
    You can have other neutrals if you wish, such as black, grey, camel, khaki but for ease and simplicy, just one.
    My year round navy bottoms include jeans, smarter trousers, a denim skirt and a navy jersey skirt, and for summer denim and navy shorts.
    I have a fresh top every day, wear the bottoms twice and have 2 cardis for warmth.
    If you wish, you could have a dress as one of your outfits, or even all 7, plus the 2 cardis.
    If you work 5 days a week, you could have 5 work outfits and 2 week-end outfits.
    Out of season clothes are stored away.
    The benefits are numerous, but mailnly, my life is so much easier in the morning and I spend less time and money shopping.
    At the begining of each new season, I get my 7 outfits from last year out and review them.
    The 4 navy bottoms are priority , if worn and need replacing, as they are harder to shop for than tops.
    I have been doing this for the last couple of seasons and it is going well. I am now starting to review my 7 outfits for summer.
    If anyone is interested, try it out, simply go to your wardrobe and try to create 7 outfits for the next week/season using this formula. 4 neutral bottoms, 7 matching tops and 2 neutral cardis. You likely already have them, but maybe need to see them in a new way? It feels amazing to know you have enough clothes. You can also your accessories for interest if you wish.
    Shoes are a challenge for me, so for summer I am thinking 3 styles - all navy - an everyday casual flat (waterproof) flat sandals for everyday, and dressier sandals with a heel, if I want a dressier casual look. I have 2/3 so far.

    My lesson was that I am allowed to make my own desicions and let go. My mum often asked me when I was decluttering „are you suuuure you want to let this go?“
    Yep, I don‘t have a whole house of space to store absolutely everything and not everything has good memories attached.

    Dear Vera this was a great video, great tips
    this Christmas my family finally realized so my husband made me a basket with a few gift cards to all my favorite stores, and I loved this, I saved the gift cards and just went spring shopping with them, it came in handy because I donated most of my clothing, thanks to my losing 15 lbs this winter…
    My daughter, son in law gave me gift card ,and a candle, some of the skin care I use. My granddaughter is very artistic and she drew me a portrait of John Lennon who I have loved since I was a teen… she framed it, and I was thrilled, because she drew it, it makes it so special …
    Christmas was so less stressful for me.
    Sentimental is very hard for me….. I’m working on it

    For those like me, that do try to sell some things vs only donating, two tips I got from others has really helped. The first was not to do it for the small things. So picking a dollar amount and just saying it's not worth my time, calls, posting, no shows, etc unless it's x $ item. So all the 'small' stuff went immediately to donate. The second, was setting a predetermined amount of time for it to sell. Otherwise stuff would linger on the off chance that the 'right buyer' was still out there. So for me, it's a month. If it doesn't sell in that month. Gone.

    Thanks for answering my question! :) I think what I've learned from decluttering is that I need to be more intentional about my buying. Getting rid of things I've spent so much money on but don't use is just stupid and I can't believe how much money I've wasted. I've also learned my husband just can't let go of anything and its kinda infuriating. He's recently had to go through his grandparents house after they passed away and they just have so much stuff and its taking forever to go through it all. I really want to lessen that burden on my children. Its such a chore for him mentally and physically to do this. And now WE are taking in so much stuff to our house because my husband cannot let go of the sentimental items on top of all the stuff he can't let go of already (like a broken guitar that he doesn't know how to play). I'd like to prevent that from happening with my children as well so they don't become overwhelmed with the aftermath of death-like they wouldn't have enough to deal with at that time anyway.

    The main lesson that I’ve learned from stuff that I’ve decluttered is that I have less things to clean or store. That’s a huge game changer. Like you say, we’ll be cleaning for the rest of our lives so why not make it as easy and time efficient as possible. I’m always time poor so fine tuning my minimalism is the only way I’m going to make time for the things that I really enjoy like, reading, knitting, swimming and spending time with my family. ❤️🌹🇦🇺

    The biggest thing I’ve learned is that items can really carry emotions and memories, and often negative ones. Another thing that I've noticed aside from ditching the fear & gaining trust in provision is that I'm really OK with empty spaces. I actually think the negative space in a room or on the walls helps to calm my mind. Less visual distraction is a big thing for me since I'm highly sensitive. Now most of my decorations are just plants and/or something functional ( coasters, candle, Scripture cards ) I love having living plants around the house. It's very nurturing and calming as well! I 1st got the idea when I saw your cute little plant baskets hanging on the wall and I thought I loved that she's so peace and calm and I would like that here. I bet your new place will be just as beautiful!!

    I've got an unusual question: I've been decluttering for so long that I have almost nothing to declutter anymore. This frustrates me because I love the feeling decluttering gives me. I should be happy, but in stead I keep looking for things to declutter. How can you get at peace with the result and let it just be?

    • @SimpleHappyZen
      @SimpleHappyZen  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Fabienne! Well, I'd say you've been focusing on the 'less' part of minimalism, making space in your home and in your life by decluttering things that don't hold any value for you, and now you can start focusing more on the 'more' side of minimalism, meaning are there perhaps some things you'd like more of? This doesn't have to be physical items, could also be hobbies, interests, activities, mindfulness, meditation, exercise, social engagements, whatever you find important :)

  • @yuliyaivanova7949

    Something that's been helping me declutter my wardrobe is Christina Mychas's suggestion to think of it as curating. That way your primary focus is on the items you genuinely love, value and want to keep, and there are less negative feelings such as guilt about getting rid of stuff. I tend to always tell myself "even though I don't like this item, it is still in good condition, it's a shame to get rid of it", but because of this I kept many things that just didn't feel good. Now I think, is there a place for this item in a curated wardrobe? When the answer is no, I can let go without guilt (or at least with a lot less guilt... Still working on it 😅)

  • @holyravenification

    The Biggest lesson i learned is decluttering and minimalism are somewhat cultural.
    in my country it's pretty normal to stay the night at a relative's or friend's place so i have too many sheets and pillows under our bad😅 i hate the fact that its taking too much space for its usage but yeah. Also i have plates and stuff just for this hospitality culture 😅 Easterners will understand the struggle 😅

    It’s hard to pick just one benefit lol. I have benefitted in so many big ways even just after a year or so. I think I’ve always been one to periodically purge things, but I never really thought about why or paid much attention to why or making it more of a daily ongoing part of my life. Perhaps the biggest benefit actually is finding more of myself. Getting to know myself better. Having more self acceptance. Defining who I am and who I want to be and where I want to go in life more clearly. It’s almost like my very own unique personality was buried under all that clutter. So much so that I couldn’t see her anymore. So yah. Prob have to say that personal identity clarification is the number one thing for me. My life is no longer about catering and tending to everyone except myself and it is no longer about the “shoulds” either. Even tho questions like who am I really? What do I really want and need? can be really difficult questions to answer at times.

    There is no perfect wardrobe. It's something that grows and changes with you. I've found it helpful to look at it as an experiential thing.
    My biggest lesson is how all of your things send you messages. Wash me, do this, you wasted this money, you can't clean or organize the right way etc. and how much better I feel when I deal with them. For example, several lidded bins when I do better with one or two medium baskets or just putting something right on the shelf.

  • @yuliyaivanova7949
    @yuliyaivanova7949 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think that experiences make much better gifts than material items - for people who would enjoy them, of course! My friend recently got me a voucher for afternoon tea (we live in the UK, so it's the kind of thing we do here 😂), and the two of us and another friend will go together. To me it is a precious and very thoughtful gift. Trips, concerts, theatre, nice lunch/dinner out can all make great gifts for the right person. If you're the recipient, you can think of an experience both you and the gift giver would enjoy and ask for that instead of an object 🙂

    Also in giving, same principle. I got my brother his fav underwear and his wife her fav skin care lotions. My sis I gave two massage certificates. Listen and then go from there! Don’t be afraid to be unconventional. Candles and coffee mugs can quickly become boring clutter.

    I have not had any trouble becoming a minimalist and continually clearing out any extras or unnecessary items in my life. However I have recently decided to get rid of a substantial book collection of 100s of books mostly used on rare occasions for reference. I am trying to sell them with little success so it looks like donating or throwing them away will be the likely outcome. The sunk cost fallacy is hard at work here as I think of all the money spent on getting the books and it is hard to throw them out or donate them.

    • @Deb.-.
      @Deb.-. ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I too donated 100's of books and just thought of them as gifts for others who can not afford them, makes it so much easier that way.

      Some neighborhoods have enclosed ( but w/ a clear front to see in ) " book boxes " - you leave donated books there for anyone coming by to take ( keep or return ) . Both adult & kids books are donated . I've seen some full one day & nearly empty the next . Senior living places , etc. also appreciate books .

    • @zeitgeist888
      @zeitgeist888 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cynthiajohnston424 Thanks. We have one directly across the street in our neighbors front yard. The problem is the books I have are non fiction and fairly career specific that the vast majority of the community would not be interested in and none are child oriented or some not kid friendly. If they don't sell I will try donating them to our local book store/donation place or the library. I would hate to throw them out.

    Thank you so so much Vera. I adore your channel and I appreciate the wisdom that you bring. I have been following your channel for a few years now and every video has helped me. I always have a new idea/permission/emotional settling to declutter a something new. Slowly but surely I am winning the fight against clutter and hording. My house is starting to look like a home and I am not filled with anxiety about everything all the time anymore. I wanted to thank you sincerely for your help.

    I feel the same way you do about cleaning. But I have too much stuff. Alot was my parents’ and stuff that was gifted to me by friends and family that have passed away. I can’t bare to part with them.

    I am with you on cleaning, I just wish my husband was on the same page. Yes, I have a cleanfreak for a spouse, lol! At least he will do things I hate (like vacumming) and I do the other things. Just some days I wish I could just do what I want before doing 'chores' because after doing the chores, I lose my inspiration to be creative sometimes. Sentimental items are tough but I have learned you can still have the memory without having the thing. I had Little Kiddles when I was young. I loved to play with them with my friend. I had them even into my teen years and took them with me when I first moved into my own apartment at 18. Somewhere along the line of a few moves, I lost the container I had kept them in. It was sad, but I was pushing 20 years old or more by that time so I didn't need them and still had the memory and they were so well loved they would of had no monetary value to sell as a collection. My older sister found a couple on eBay and gifted them to me one year, but really.....I don't know what to do with them.

    So enjoy your videos. But I gave away my mixer and attachments to a person who helped me with my cleaning. Felt I should have given it to family, but they didn't need it. But too much stress as they live far away and selling it would be too hard.
    Learning not to stress too much...and love minimalism. I'm never too old to learn.
    Great Gramma Wendy in Canada. PPS:
    No regrets! And really helps to take all the clutter and get rid of it,so family won't have a huge chore to get rid of things!

    Biggest lesson: the more I declutter the more stuff I realise I don't really care about or need-but it is a process. Seeing the wood for the trees... Another lesson is that it is a lot easier keeping the house tidy and easier to clean with less stuff.

    Having ADHD can make the implementation of new habits tricky sometimes, whether it's with shopping less or decluttering more mindfully. As of lately, slowing down and using more caution has been helping me a lot! Sometimes, I'll delay a purchase that I know isn't necessary or essential, but it will provide me with a sense of joy or pleasure. I guess the next step for me is to be more patient when trying to sell items... 😅

    I’m one of those that has a lot of stuff but I like my stuff that makes me happy and my space homey but... it’s too much stuff and I’ve had it for years. There are steps I learn from you that have helped me eliminate many items and bring in only useful items now. Awhile later I can go back through and get rid of those things that at that other time I felt I needed to keep but don’t this time.

    Hi Vera thank you for sharing such a wonderful video, I have 2 questions in my mind , just curious (1) You always wear a different outfit for your video, never repeat it , then how can you manage to keep limited clothes in your wardrobe? (2) Do you ever tried DIY projects, best out of waste kind of craft , or recycle old clothes or things to new one ?

    • @SimpleHappyZen
      @SimpleHappyZen  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Meenaxi, glad you enjoyed the video! About your question, I currently have a wardrobe of around 40 items. The shirts I wear in my videos, I repeat very often. :) Most of the things in my closet I've had for 5-10 years or more. So everything you see me wearing in a video, I've worn in several others too. If you're interested, I have a whole video with a wardrobe tour, so you can see everything I own and how I go about creating a minimal wardrobe: th-cam.com/video/rE6Jw-ncCeM/w-d-xo.html

    I'm trying to get to grips with minimalism and at the moment I'm finding it difficult. Recently one of my friends dropped off some things for me such as scented candles, dream catchers etc I tried to let him down gently by explaining that as much as I appreciate the gesture I'm trying to downsize. I didn't want to hurt his feelings so now I'm left with the stuff, any advice about what I can do.

      Ask friends or acquaintances if they would like to share in the generous gifts. Pass the kind intentions onward. Particularly if they are not very well off - explain that you are trying to become minimal and could they help!
